Camera RAW - How to...

Please can anyone help...I recently acquired Photoshop CS3 and last night downloaded from Adobe the Camera RAW file, I followed the detailed instructions carefully, so thought all was well...but when I went to open a file I had an error message saying that it could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document...?
So I am completely perplexed and wondering where I went wrong inbetween the download stage. I have also purged the cache in Bridge, but this isn't helping, so any of you know what the answer to my (hopefully 'small') problem might be????
I use Window's Vista.

Hi Pieter,
For your query, I am at a loss really on how Camera RAW is still giving you the error message.
It was a fluke really that going onto it again last night resulted in all being well for me on Camera RAW - only because I went through it a second time on advice and making sure certain elements was correctly installed (i.e. on Adobe Bridge) - which it was.
So like you initially when it didn't work and I had the error messages come up, it was very frustrating.
You seem to have done all that was required, (as the download instructions stipulated, which is very important that you do this to the letter) and that you 'purge the cache' which I found in the Adobe Bridge program.
Maybe posting a new post on the forum will hopefully yield some definitive answers for your query.
Sorry I can't be of much further help to you.
Kind regards, Sheree

Actually, not entirely true. In the case of Fuji DSLR's you would do better to double the rez in Camera Raw as that matches the interpolation that the Fuji software does in their higher quoted "effective resolutions"(it ain't real resolution mind you but it can benefit certain image types).
If you know for an absolute fact you need more resolution than the native file has, you really might want to test upsampling in Camera Raw as it has a newly tuned upsample (put in in ACR 5.2) that is an adaptive Bicubic algorithm that is either the normal Bicubic or Bicubic Smoother depending on the size–and that's something even Photoshop can't do.
But in general unless you know for a fact you need the image bigger (or have a Fuji camera) processing at the file's native size is the most efficient.

If you mean you are opening jpeg files that have already been edited in camera raw, that is normal.
Otherwise, that's very strange. There are many users who would like to be able to open in camera raw by default or from the Organizer  and complain not to be able to do so!
Which Elements versin? From the editor or the Organizer?

  • Open with External Editor Adobe Camera Raw = HOW?

When I export a RAW file to the External Editor (I've chosen Photoshop CS3) I would like for it to open in Adobe Camera Raw, just like any RAW file that I open in Photoshop outside of Aperture.
However it bypasses Adobe Camera Raw and opens directly in Photoshop.
I have the "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files" and "for Supported RAW files" boxes checked in the Photoshop Prefs.
I see some chatter about Hot folders and Automator around here, but no definitive answer/workaround.
If Aperture doesn't support exporting to Adobe Camera Raw, it is a HUGE leg-up for Lightroom in the RAW workflow department.
Please tell me I'm missing a checkbox somewhere... Thanks.

You're not missing a checkbox, you're missing a fundamental issue of how Aperture (and LightRoom for that matter) work.
When you use the Open in External Editor command, Aperture will convert the RAW file, apply any adjustments you have made, and send the resulting PSD or TIFF file to the external editor.
The original file is NOT sent and there is no option to do so. Why not? Because Aperture Versions do not exist as discrete image files - the adjustments are shown on-the-fly each time you view it, saving on the space taken up by multiple TIFF/PSD/JPEG files for each Version. As ACR uses a totally different RAW conversion & adjustment engine from Aperture, Aperture wouldn't be able to display any changes made in ACR without including the entire conversion engine of ACR, which Adobe might not be too happy about...
In other words, if you want to use a different RAW convertor you will have to export the Master, convert it in the other app, and then import the resulting 'normal' image file back into Aperture. The same is true for LightRoom.

  • Photoshop cs6 opens some jpg always in camera raw , how can i avoid it?

    Hi
photoshop opens some jpg files 3 (i have a folder with 60 pics raw and jpg ) and it opens always via camera raw
    i don't know why
but is there a way to avoid it?
i mean i want to open these 3 files like other jpg files , directly in photoshop
    thanks
    cheers

There is a setting that you can change that affects whether Camera Raw is the preferred method for opening JPEGs...
In Photoshop, go to the Preferences - Camera Raw configuration entry, and look here:
When set to the middle entry ("Automatically open JPEGs with settings") it will use Camera Raw again by default if you've used it before to open the JPEG.  Personally I prefer the Disable setting.

  • Help render the raw files edited with camera raw how?

    Hi
    i have a problem
i use  bridge cs5 (updated) to browse my raw files
often i open my raw files with camera raw inside bridge cs5 and make some corrections like exposure , saturation , contrast and so on
but after bridge doesn't re-render the files
i mean the thumbs ,previews , the slideshow still are in default setting
when i click and open with camera raw inside bridge or with photoshop cs5 ,the raw files look with corretions
but again bridge show me not with the corrections
    i run under w7 32bit
    what could be the problem?
    thanks

    mantralightroom wrote:
i see previews and thumbs with the edits but with a big delay
    thanks
If you are using HQ On Demand you will get fast thumbnails, but there will be a delay in generating the preview as Bridge builds it.
The Always HQ takes more space, but faster as the data is already in cache.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I get Camera Raw for Pentax PEF file to open in Photoshop CS4?

How do I get Camera Raw in CS4 to recognize Pentax PEF files? I have downloaded and installed the Camera Raw Plug Ins but I still cannot open the file.  I have done this on my older computer but can't seem to get it to work on my new one.

I just looked that up. You need at least Adobe Camera Raw 8.3 which only Photoshop CS6 and above has.
Adobe Camera RAW 8.3 include Pentax K-3 support - PentaxForums.com
So in order to read it in ACR 5.7, you will need to use the free Adobe DNG Converter and convert those Pentax raw files to DNG.

I have a Fuji X-Pro1 camera. I use Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5  I have Photoshop CS5.  How do I open its RAW files?

Since photoshop cs5 can't use past the camera raw 6.7 plugin and that camera requires at least the camera raw 7.1 plugin, you could use the 8.7.1 dng converter
to convert the files to dng copies, which then photoshop cs5 should be able to open.

  • How do you bypass camera raw when opening a jpeg into photoshop?

I am finding that when I right click on a jpg image in a folder in finder, the jpg is being opened in camera raw rather than directly into photoshop even though I am selecting photoshop. Help!
Another issue is the shortcut for save is "command s" and when I hit that it is pulling up the save as feature.  What gives?  Is my version a lemon?
Thanks in advance for any help!

You must have used Lightroom or Camera Raw to apply metadata to those JPEGs.
Do you have Bridge? You'd use Edit > Develop Settings > Clear Settings on selected JPEGs. They should then directly open in Photoshop.

  • Camera Raw Preferences greyed out in Bridge 4.05.11

I have recently downloaded an update for Adobe Camera Raw / PS CS5 via automatic updates and now I cannot open raw files via Adobe Bridge (V4.05.011). When I double click the NEF file In Bridge it tries to open in PS but I get "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".  Camera Raw Preferences in Bridge is grayed out and Camera Raw plug-in does not appear in PS Help/About Plug-ins.
I have checked that Camera Raw Plug In is still in the program files: common files>adobe>plug-ins>cs5>file formats.
I have tried updating via the Updates in both Adobe Bridge and PS CS5 and it tells me there are no updates.
I am using Windows XP 32 bit, PS CS5 V12.0.4
I have been trying to fix this problem for days and would really appreciate some help.

Bridge: Apply all CS3 updates in order, bottom to top.
Photoshop Version CS3 (not CS3 International), Start from the bottom with Buffering Extensions, 10.0.1 update, and you can go all the way to Adobe Camera Raw 4.6
If you have a camera models beyond what's supported in 4.6 and your OSX is 10.7 or later, download the 8.7.1 DNG converter.

  • RAW (NEF) photos from my new Nikon D750 will not open with Photoshop Elements11 Camera RAW.

  • Camera Raw 6.7 Update Stalls at 6.5%

I've tried downloading the update via photoshop, but the progress bar gets to 6.5% and then stalls. My computer also runs incredibly slow and I can't navigate to anything without a long wait time. After a while I've just shut my computer down the hard way using the power button. I've tried this about 10 times with the same outcome. I tried to manually intall from Adobe.com but it gave me an error message that my applications manager is corrupted and I must download a new version, which I've already done.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. 64 bit
    CS5

Unfortunately, there is no adobe camera raw plugin that works in cs5 that will allow you to open your Canon Digital Rebel SL1 EOS 100D EOS Kiss X7 files directly in to photoshop cs5.
(camera raw 6.7 is the newest version that works in cs5 and you need at least camera raw 7.4)
Besides updating to a newer version of photoshop, you could use the 8.6 DNG Converter to convert the SL1 files to dng copies, which should then open in photoshop cs5.
