Converting .docx merges to PDF is very slow.

Hi all first post, so hello!
As the thread question states, I am trying to figure out creating PDFs from docx merges are very very slow to complete. We are using Adobe Acrobat 8, and Microsoft Word 2007 on Windows XP.
Before we upgraded to MS Office 2007 and the docx format, Acrobat 8 created PDF merges in the the 2003 .doc format just fine and was very quick. We can even created PDFs from .doc merges through Office 2007 and it is still works great and is super fast. But once we try a creating a PDF from a .docx merge, it crawls and is very slow, and is starting to be time consuming for the users. I checked out the 3-4 people that perform this function, and they all seem to have the same issue.  So i would guess this would have something to do with the .docx format and the way Adobe 8 interprets the format to create a PDF from it. The documents normally fall within the 1200-1500 page range.
Acrobat 8 has been updated with the latest program updates, but I am a loss as to why .doc's create so fast, but docx's are very very slow.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I tried to include all pertinent info you would need, if I left something out, please let me know.
Thanks!

I solved my problem. I updated the Acrobat pro 9 version several times, then I coppiend the job options according to the last step in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/780318
Now Acrobat gently merges word files to one pdf, independent if it is Doc or Docx.

  • Bookmarking some pdf is very slow

    I found the bookmarking action for some pdf in Sony T1 is very slow. It could take about 30 seconds before the bookmark triangle appears. With epub book it only take about 2 seconds.
    Press back to return to booklist then open the book again may make it looks more responsive.
    The pdf I was reading is a text based pdf with some chinese fonts embeded, no cropped view, just in regular view.

    Hello,
    Thank you for your post.
    PDF files have everything embedded, such as the Text font, pictures, and file structure therefore it takes longer to read the file prior to marking it. this is why you can read a PDF with Chinese fonts, but cannot read an Epub Book with Chinese characters.

  • Converting Outlook mails to PDF is very unreliable

    I recently bought Acrobat XI Pro in order to archive my large Outlook mailbox.
    Problem is, it works alright for single mails or small folders with <200 mails.
    If I try to select all folders I am interested in and set this up using the Selected Folders option in the PDF ribbon, it gives me a message, that these are lots of mails (~6000) and might take a while.
    When I click OK it starts, but after a few minutes either the progress bar simply disappears and nothing has happened, or Outlook restarts.
    Also I noted, that with the progress bar still running there is almost no activity in the task manager, as if nothing is happening.
    Any ideas? Is there a good and a wrong way of doing this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Compressor merging distributed quicktime components VERY SLOW. WHY?

    I've got an 8 core mac pro, quickcluster with services, 4 instances.
    The quickcluster works GREAT. it's super fast, good CPU Utilization. awesome.
    the problem is when all the segments are done and compressor merges the bits together, it goes VERY VERY slowly, in fact it takes much much longer to re-assemble the parts of a 43gb prores file than it does to actually compress it. Activity monitor shows disk transfer speeds of 20mb/s max, and CPU utilization drops to zero. batch monitor says that is has no time remaining.. yet this process takes an hour or more.
    I have compressor set up to NOT copy source to cluster since the cluster is in fact my local machine.
    rendering to "this computer" only uses maybe 30% of my CPU.
    ***? why is is so slow? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? for one thing, It seems like the QT segments could be rendered to another drive, and there might be a bit less thrashing that way. but this slowness really is remakably silly for such a powerful system. I mean REALLY silly.

    Somoflange,
    Yes, the "overhead" to which you are referring is something I have experienced as well. One of the Apple Pro Apps guys said to be aware of this problem; that at a certain point, depending on input file size and number of instances you have set the rejoining of the segmented AV clips may start to take longer than it takes to render / compress them.
    We experience a major problem with this "overhead" while encoding lots of 1-hour blocks of programming into MPEG-2 transport streams, across 4 Xserves and 1 Mac Pro (the Mac Pro set as cluster controller). Eventhough your setup is all local being a QuickCluster, it sounds like the same problem. We were crunching 1 hour files in under 10 minutes, but the rejoining was taking much longer.
    The fix, for us, was dialing down the number of instances in your Qmaster prefs. We did some benchmark tests with the same input file for all 8 dif't instance numbers. For longer files, it actually was faster to only use 2 instances.

  • Creating macro converting docx files into pdf

  • Building PDF file very slow when pmd file contains many eps files

    I have a 64 page publication which contains a placed .eps file on each page.  (The .eps files are the output of a music notation program and average about 60KB).   I have a new computer with a fast quad pentium processor.  It takes 10 minutes to export a pdf file (It took 45 minutes on my old computer!).
    The time is spent in the first phase, where the little window says "Sending page 1,2...etc.  The pages crawl by. PageMaker is CPU bound.
    PDF export option or distiller settings appear to have little affect on this.
    It was my understanding that eps files, ps files, and pdf files are all similar in structure.  What is taking so long here?
    10 minutes is not a lot in the scheme of things right now but this is part of a much bigger book and I am concerend about how much time this process is going to take when we are up to 600 pages.

    Well if you don't know, I doubly don't know.
    I looked at that lon g list of possible reasons for the Courier substitution, and most or all of them don't seem to apply.  I have no PostScript printer, just an inkjet for drafts.  We NEVER print from PageMaker for any of our work. We make PDFs.  We either print the PDFs here for draft work, or send them out to the printer when we are done.   All the fonts involved are TT fonts.  Whe n I make a .ps file I use PrinterStyles->Acrobat, and actually I've only been doing that to investigate this performance problem to isola te what phase of the process is slow.   Normally I just use the PageMaker Export PDF function and it has worked fine with many customers, many publications, over 10 years.
    I'm going to try to fiddle with some of these embedding options to see what arises.
    It is suspicious that posting this problem in the Sibelius forum elicits no response.  This cannot be an uncommon workflow in music publishing - use PageMaker for the book framework and place Sibelius scores when needed.   Any kind of music textbook would have this flow.
    Do you by any chance know the algorithm for locating fonts when some are referenced and/or imbedded in placed .eps files, and others, possible duplicates, are referenced by the PageMaker document.  Understanding that would be the key to unlocking this puzzle.
    Also Jay Chevako asked for the .pdf files.  I will get around to that when I can, I'm not sure what you will infer - the first one will be correct but slow to export and the second will be fast but with the Courier substitution.
    Thanks

  • Export to PDF is very slow

    Hi all,
    I am using the following script to export an indd document to PDF file. But the process takes long time. Is there any configurations that can be made to reduce the processing time.
    app.documents.item(0).exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType,File(<pdfFileName>),app.pdfExportPre sets.item("[Press Quality]"));
    Please provide me some way to reduce the processing time taken for exporting PDF.
    Thanks,
    Anitha

    Tiago,
    For exporting Discoverer has to bring all the data into memory, format it and then export it to the client. It does not use the data cache, so possibly you are running low on memory and your swap/disk is being used -- something to check
    For Discoverer 10g Desktop, the aggregation registry keys are not there by default so that could also cause a slow export and cpu utilization if you have aggregation. See MetaLink document 313444.1 -- it may apply to 9.0.4 as well
    SS,
    You have not provided which component you are exporting from (Desktop, Plus, Viewer) and the versions. There could be several possibilities depending upon the component and the version. The above also applies.
    I also recall and issue with spanish office 2003 in some prior versions -- not sure if that applies to your situation(s)

  • Print to PDF is very slow showing "save as" dialog when printing from Outlook 2013

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem with one of my users.  The problem is intermittent.  At first when I was looking at the issue, here is what I saw:
    In Outlook 2013, I opened an e-mail.  I then selected Print, selected the Adobe PDF printer, and hit the print button.  There was over a 1 minute delay before the "save as" dialog appeared to ask me where to save the document and what to name it.  I did this for several different e-mails with and without attachments and the problem was consistent.  I saved the e-mail to a local e-mail file and the problem was the same.  This process was over 30 or 40 minutes.  I was pulled away for another issue and now the "save as" dialog pops up within seconds.  The user is complaining that this happens regularly.  I tried a repair, cleared temp files, and was going to try printing from other apps, but then it started temporarily behaving itself, so I can't tell you if the same delay existed in other apps.  I didn't see anything obvious in the event viewer logs.
    Has anyone else seen this?  Anyone have an idea on how to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks,
    Jeffery Smith

    Thank for your help Bill, but changing settings in the distiller did not seem to work. As my application prints directly to the default application without using anything specific to Acrobat, I was hoping there was a simple way forward. A colleague suggested copying registry entries from the account I logged on as to the S-1-5-18 entry, then rebooting. This had no effect as the prompt still comes up.
    Aandi, I don't have the Acrobat SDK or any experience of it.
    Also I'm not sure where any code/script would sit since the application is stable and so I would rather not change it.
    If it amounts to a few lines of javascript sitting outside the application then that would be of interest.

  • Converting a ResultSet to XML (mysql) - very slow - need some criticism

    Preface:
    I have some data being inserting into a mySQL table every 5 minutes. Currently, there are about 275 rows. Each row has 26 (TEXT) columns, the data in those columns is no longer than 10-15 characters.
    I am using the following code to turn this data into XML which is then, through a servlet, output on a webserver. With 275 rows, this is taking around 3-4 minutes to generate the XML file. I am worried that in a week from now when the data is over 2,000 rows it will exponentially decrease in speed. Can someone give me a better route so this will run faster?
             String xml = "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?>\n\n";
           String SQLCommand = "select * from "+getDataId()+";";
           try{
                Statement stmt;
                ResultSet rs;
               String url = "jdbc:mysql://"+getIBoxIp()+":"+getDbPort()+"/"+getDbName();
               Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(url,getDbUsername(), getDbPassword());
                    stmt = con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE, ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);
                    rs = stmt.executeQuery(SQLCommand);
                    while(rs.next()){
                      xml += "\n<row>";
                      ResultSetMetaData md = rs.getMetaData();
                      for(int i = 1; i < md.getColumnCount() + 1; i++){
                           xml += "\n\t<" + md.getColumnName(i) + ">" + rs.getString(i) + "</" + md.getColumnName(i) + ">";
                      xml += "\n</row>\n";
                    System.out.println("@@mysql> XMLSQLCommand > " + SQLCommand);
               con.close();
               return xml;
           }catch(Exception ex)
                System.out.println("@@mysql> SQLCommand Failed > " + SQLCommand + "\n@@mysql> Exception > " + ex.getMessage() + "");
                return xml;
           }Again, with 275 rows, I'm getting about 250 KB of data in the resulting XML file with a 3-5 minute parsing/generation time.
    Thanks in advance!!!

    No, it's a good question. The page I linked to does say
    "Instead of XMLWriter, this driver uses David Megginsons other public domain writer program, DataWriter..."
    So yeah, trying to track down Megginson's code might not be such a good idea. But the sentence quoted does suggest what should be used instead: XMLWriter. Which implies that XMLWriter was mentioned somewhere earlier in the book.
    So, following the "Prev" links to previous pages, eventually I found XMLWriter discussed a couple of pages earlier, where it says
    "More specifically, Im going to use David Megginsons public domain com.megginson.sax.XMLWriter class."
    I don't really find this very satisfactory as advice for beginners, so I somewhat regret doing that. It's a long time since I looked at that page myself. But it does have a link pointing to http://www.megginson.com/downloads/, where it is possible to download the Java version of XMLWriter. I'm not sure if the OP is comfortable with using downloaded software, but that download is the simplest possible Java download so it might be a good place to start.
    You could recommend using a DOM strategy, and JDOM might be a good choice, but if you can just generate the XML straight from your input, it's a better strategy to do that rather than building a DOM tree in memory and then serializing it, in my opinion.

  • Cad converted to PDF, very slow rendering upon opening Document.

    The Rendering when opening the document is very slow.
    It takes about 45 seconds to open, then it freezes for another 10 seconds before one can view it.
    iv'e read alot and tried different suggestions, but no solution so far.
    Testet on Adobe Reader 10.1 and 9.2, and Acrobat 9.1. All the same.
    The Document it self has been coverted form Cad to PDF, and has a very large resolution, it is 1.8MB, upon opening Reader uses about half a gig ram.
    I've read that on opening, it has to rescale the image to fit ones resolution, and this is what takes time?
    Simply wondering if anyone has any solution or explanation to why.
    Thanks.

    Drive A is 60 GB with 3.66GB free.
    Running OSX from that drive should really slow it to a Crawl, and is getting to the dangerous point... you need at least 12GB fre, 30 GB would be better.
    Nt certain why the other is so slow... did you open Activity Monitor & observe CPU, Memory & such while it is slow?
    If you can free some space on the Internal, Might give a try with Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
    Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
    At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
    The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
    Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Converting a large word file to pdf - very slow

    I have a 150 page word document that I'm trying to turn into a pdf and it is taking over an hour. What is normal time? Any way to speed it up?

    In SharePoint 2010 (not in Foundation) you can use word automation services application to convert doc files to pdf. It allows conversion from all word versions (starting from 97). There is a great article on this feature here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff742315.aspx I'll just provide a short snippet of word to pdf conversion:
    using System;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.Linq;
    using System.Text;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint;
    using Microsoft.Office.Word.Server.Conversions;
    class Program
    static void Main(string[] args)
    string siteUrl = "http://localhost";
    // If you manually installed Word automation services, then replace the name
    // in the following line with the name that you assigned to the service when
    // you installed it.
    string wordAutomationServiceName = "Word Automation Services";
    using (SPSite spSite = new SPSite(siteUrl))
    ConversionJob job = new ConversionJob(wordAutomationServiceName);
    job.UserToken = spSite.UserToken;
    job.Settings.UpdateFields = true;
    job.Settings.OutputFormat = SaveFormat.PDF;
    job.AddFile(siteUrl + "/Shared%20Documents/Test.docx",
    siteUrl + "/Shared%20Documents/Test.pdf");
    job.Start();
    If you are using SharePoint Foundation 2010, you should consider using some 3rd part library like
    Aspose or
    SyncFusion
