How can I copy my OLD personal music library to a NEW computer setup/iTunes?

If you are getting a new Mac, then there is the migration assistant, I've never used it but it may move iTunes too, it should say in the manual.

Making backup copy of my music library

what's the most efficient way of making a backup copy of my music library? i have a rather extensive library and i want to use as little cds as possible. also, i'm not interested in being able to play the cds on other cd players, i just want a backup copy.

I use an external HD. I had an iMac crash, and fortunately had my iTunes library on an iPod. I used a third party utility to restore the songs from the iPod to the computer, so no harm was done. I plan on using a fire-wire external HD as a backup in the future, however.

Another persons music library shows up in my iTunes

I am using iTunes 8 and I have suddenly had someone elses library show up under my shared list. I had a Macbook stolen from me about 6 months ago, and I am wondering if this user could be the thief, as I am using the same login for iTunes.

If it is, he's one of yoru neighbors now hitching onto yoru wifi/local network.
as I am using the same login for iTunes.
iTunes login is not required for Sharing.
Go to iTunes prefs -> Sharing and turn off *Look for shared libraries* and *Share my libraries*.
Also, check your router and wifi and make sure your firewalls are turned on.

Ipod wants to copy entire music library

My Ipod wants to copy the entire music library (30GB) instead of just the selected songs (2GB).. what gives?

Transferring iTunes music library from a mac to a PC

Hi
Does anyone know how i can transfer all the songs on my mac iTunes to my new windows iTunes? I followed the instructions on the msn support website but these instructions must only be for transferring the iTunes library from a mac to a mac, or from a pc to another pc, and not from a mac to pc or vice versa.
I`ve just bought a laptop to take to university and i want to bring my music library with me.
When i loaded up my itunes from mac onto the pc it just keeps saying windows does not recognise the type of file. Is there a way of changing the settings so that windows will recognise and run a mac file?

The music files will transfer and play without a problem.
You will need to download a Windows version of iTunes and the iPod Updater in order to use the PC. The Mac versions will not work.

There may be some problem with the Windows version of iTunes reading the Mac's iTunes Library file. This may prevent you from completely moving over some of the music meta-data from the Mac to the PC.
There have been some posts on this, but I'll need to search for them.

EDIT: Based on an old post I had copied into my "iPod Hints" file, here is how one contributer gave a high-level process:
i 1) copy the iTunes Music folder to your Windows machine, replacing the existing folder (back up the existing one first)
i 2) copy the iTunes Music Library.xml file to your Windows machine, and change the name to e.g. iTunesMac.xml so iTunes won't write over it.
i 3) delete any "iTunes Library.itl" file (back up the existing one)
i 4) run iTunes, and do File > Import... and pick iTunesMac.xml

How big is the flash drive? How big is the iTunes folder? If there is enough room it should just be a case of copying the folder from <User's Music> to the flash drive.

How to copy backup of iTunes library onto another computer?

My primary laptop with my music library just crashed. I have a older laptop that I plan to use while I get the other repaired. I have a complete backup of my music library on external drive. After installing iTunes on the spare laptop I copied the backup music library to the iTunes music folder. However, when I start itunes, nothing shows up in iTunes. This has probably been discussed but several searches have not found how to recover this. Does anyone know what the process is?

Itunes music library got corrupted

all my music in my iTunes are gone, is there a way to copy back the entire library on my iPod to my iTunes on my computer? RIght now, the only thing I could use the iTunes for is syncing the pics and and the apps with my iPhone, where can I find the copy of my music library to install back to iTunes? Thank you.

Importing Music Library

I have a music library that I have saved on a seperate partition on my hard drive.
I used windows media player to rip all the music to MP3 format. I recently purchased a 2g Nano and installed iTunes.
I dragged & dropped the music library into iTunes, which worked great - that is - until I realized it made a 2nd copy of my music library under the iTunes folder in "My Music".
This wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't 42g worth of space. How can I get iTunes to use my original music collection. And is there a way I can import the whole collection? It's literally 10,000 songs.

I am completely re-adding my entire library for other various reasons, but when running iTunes @ the bottom it says I'm 800 files short of what my actual iTunes folder displays.
I do have a lot of non playable playlist files, could this be the difference in files?
See the thing is I'm starting to think some of my MP3's aren't updating.

Why is my personal music downloading to my work computer?

I recently started a new job with a Mac running 10.7.5. I logged into my Apple account to listen to iTunes Radio and install apps. I did not authorize the computer to access my personal music files, but they are downloading to my work computer (presumably from iCloud?).
I tried to deauthorize the work Mac, but it says it is not authorized. I'm not comfortable having my personal music library on my work computer at this point. How do I make it stop downloading my music and delete the songs it's already downloaded?

Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
Then restart the iPod.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Now try downloading an app.

2 Macs, 2 iPods, 1 iTunes Music library

I have copied all my/our Cds into my G5iMac Music Library (iTunes 6.0.3) - I have over 3000 tracks - approx. 14Gb of music. I have a 30Gb 5th Gen. iPod and have all the tracks on my iPod.
However, my husband would like to copy my iTunes Music Library to his Mac mini so he can 'pick and choose' which tracks he wants to download to his iPod mini (6Gb). I started to copy various albums using a USB 2.0 flash drive but it will take forever so I've given up on that idea.
He has updated his iPod using my iMac but I've discovered that he's gone through my playlists and unchecked many, many, tracks that he doesn't want (but I do). Of course, now they don't download onto my iPod either.
Is there a simple way I can transfer a copy of my entire iTunes Music Library to his mac Mini so he can use his own computer to sync his iPod and leave mine to me? ;-(
I have a lan set up using Airport Express but only so he can share my ADSL2+ connection wirelessly - i.e. we don't share files between our computers (I also have a VAIO XP Pro SP2 notebook on the lan, too - I don't want any music on it at all).
If it is possible, would it be best to do this via firewire?

I would do this via firewire - airporting would take all day.
go to network prefs, choose network port configurations, then click "new". select the built-in firewire option.
Once you have set up this on both machines (and connnected them with a firewire cable!), you should be able to connect by choosing "connect to server" from the Go menu in the finder.
if you have problems, try creating an new network location called "firewire" with only the firewire connection box checked.
if you have purchased music on iTunes you may not be able to share these files, but on that opic i am not 100% sure.

Yes. As long as all your songs you lost have been Matched or Uploaded to iTunes Match you can download your entire library from the cloud.
It might take some time though

One person, one iPhone, one laptop. Two homes in two states, two external drives, two identical copies of my music library. Many headaches.

I feel like this question is asked endlessly on these boards, but somehow I still can't find a relevant answer... So, apologies for rehashing a variant of the same question!
I have one (ancient) MacBook Pro, and one (ancient) iPhone. I carry both back and forth between two states: the state where I work and the state where I live the rest of the time. My ancient MBP and my ancient iPhone are too small to carry my whole music collection (which is quite large—larger than a new phone or laptop would reasonably support, anyway). My mobile apps and my podcasts live on my laptop, but my music library lives on an external drive. I have two external drives now, one in each state where I live/work. I also have a copy of everything on my desktop machine at work, but I've given up long ago trying to sync to multiple computers. I'll settle for now for syncing to one computer (my MBP), which sometimes is connected to one copy of my library, and sometimes is connected to another copy of my library.
I know that I can make multiple iTunes libraries, with duplicate copies of my podcast subscriptions, my apps, and my playlists and music, and keep switching which one my phone is set to sync to (wiping it each time, and possibly losing some settings in the process?) But that's a pain in the neck. Plus, it's hard to keep my podcasts active in both libraries, because iTunes podcast subscriptions are like frail little tamagotchi critters that need constant love, nurturing, and encouragement, or else they wither and die.
Is there any way to have a single library, with my apps and podcasts on the laptop, which just happens to make use of the "local" copies of my music on whichever external drive happens to be attached?
Or do I need the google cloud + android if I want to unify my listening and syncing life?

There are several reasons which may cause the backup to be full instead of incremental, such as source volume snapshot is deleted, from which the last backup was taken.
