Determine if commenting is allowed in PDF?

Is there a way in Workbench to determine if a PDF allows commenting, short of trying to add a comment and catching the exception? I know I could test the properties of a PDF to see if it's a fillable form, but that is not the only case where commenting is not allowed: security/password protection is at least one other case.
Thanks!

That depends on what you mean be "allows commenting" (e.g., the usage right has been applied) and under what conditions you need to determine it.

  • Commenting not allowed after emailing pdfs

I am fairly new to acrobat.  I am trying to save illustrator files as pdfs in order for clients to comment with stickies on the file.  No matter what security settings I use after emailing the files my document settings change.... comments not allowed....???

The option to allow commenting is checked and the document is saved replacing the first exported doc.
I guess that part of your terminology is confusing. What do you mean by "checked".
To be sure we're on the same page, by "checked" you mean after opening in Acrobat you went to Comments>Enable for commenting and analysis in Adobe Reader, correct?
The reason I ask is because if you open it in Acrobat and go to File>Properties and see that commenting is "allowed", that still doesn't mean that it is enabled for Reader users.

  • Commenting Not allowed, even in docs I create  Reader 8.1.1

I cannot comment or bring up the comment menu in any document in Reader 8.1.
I do not know what happened. And this is true for at least 2 computers in my house. We have Acrobat 6 installed as a PDF Creator. But even in documents I create and have no security enabled, the Reader 8.1 tells me the document has "commenting" - "not allowed." I have tried everything I can think of, even un-installing reader and then installing a fresh copy, but the reader still does not allow me to make comments,
    Any ideas?

    Good morning all,
I believe the following information may be helpful, I came across this issue this morning and found that this works:
Once you have completed your file in Acrobat Professional you need to open the "Comments" tab menu and choose "Enable for commenting and analysis in Reader" option.
This will save your file again and once opened in Reader the commenting functions will be enabled.
Why this is so when all security options in the Professional File are show 'allowed' is beyond my comprehension.
    Hope it helps.
    Cheers.

  • Comments Not allowed?

    Hello freinds,
I have installed Adobe LiveCycle designer 8.2 in my windows 7 machine, i opened a brand new pdf and entered contact details, then am trying to write comments, but, when i saw its peoperties, i noticed that COMMENTS: NOT ALLOWED under security tab!! Pls. let me know how i can enable and so that i can write comments.
    Thank you

    Hi Srinivas,
Just to add my bit to the discussion, which is the same as what George and Chuck are saying.
The issue is that the form is opening in the free Adobe Reader (even if opening in a browser, the Reader is still being used). As a result certain functionality is not available.
For example, if the form is not Reader Enabled, then users with Reader will not be able to add comments to the form.
Even if the form is Reader Enabled, if the form was originally saved as a Dynamic XML Form (in the LiveCycle Designer save-as dialog), then you will not be able to add comments.
When working with forms that are created in LiveCycle Designer, you can only add comments where the form was originally saved as a Static PDF Form in the save-as dialog.
Here is a summary. I suspect that your form is in Option 2, that is the form is not Reader Enabled and is opened in Reader.

    Hi luggyguy,
You might need to follow the steps mentioned below:
Sign in to " https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf" using your registered Adobe ID credentials.
After signing in, click 'Select PDF Files to Export' and choose the desired PDF file from your computer or simply drag them.
A new window will appear in which you have to choose 'Word' under 'Convert to' label.
Then, you can download the converted file on your computer or locate them under 'Files' tab.
Follow these steps and let me know if you still face any issue.

  • How do I NOT allow a PDF Fillable form I've created to be saved?

I just got XI Pro ... I've never had a pro version before.  A co-worker who has used pro for ages (but has an older version) showed me how to make it so that a PDF filled form could be saved by another user.  However, in the version I have it seems that the ability for another user to save a PDF filled form is automatic ... I can't figure out how to shut it off.
Our PDF fillable forms will be on our website, but we DO NOT WANT a user to be able to save the filled or the blank form.  Looking for a PRINT-ONLY option once it's been filled out.
    Anyone have any ideas??
    Thanks!

This was recent;y discussed here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5881211
There was a major change made with Reader 11 that allows it to save filled-in forms, add all sorts of comments/markups, and some other things without the document needing to be Reader-enabled, unlike all previous versions. This is what you're noticing. So the best you can do is attempt to clear the fields when the document is saved and/or when it's opened.

  • Commenting Not Allowed

I have converted several scanned checklists to form fillable PDF's using Designer. After converting them to form fillable I have inserted several check box objects so that our employees (who all have Adobe Standard) can fill out the check lists and save them and insert the filled out checklists into work binders. On occassion they need the ability to add comments to a section of the checklist and they all know how to use the commenting features. On most of the forms I created commenting is alllowed however on the last two that I created "Commenting Allowed" is marked as no in the security settings and I can't get this to change.
The only thing that I can think of that I changed on these is that I might have selected "Preserve Appearance" instead of "Maintain Editablity" in step two of the New Form Assistant.
Is there any way to enable the commenting on these files? One of them is 90 pages long and took a long time to add all the checkboxes to.
    Thanks

Try to save it as a static form. Here's the email from our tech team:
"If he did just have him save it as a static form. The issue becomes one of how do we know where to put the comments if the page/section doesnt exist."

  • How can i see, on which page my client commented in a shared PDF file via CC?

    Hello,
i want to use the share function of CC to share a multipage PDF document with my client. Everytime he comments this PDF, the comments are not shown on the single pages, they are shown in a summary for the whole file. It is really hard to find the specific page for a single comment. Is there another way?
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

I don't know if you solved this issue yet. But we have the same issue in the pass, and clean the log files under "\Synchronizer\resources\" folder seems to be a solution. Here is the thread talking about it.

  • Disappearing Sticky Note Comments in Acrobat 9 PDF Reviews

I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro (version 9.3.2) and the reviewers are using Reader 9, and all of us are on Windows XP SP3. I'm distributing PDFs for online review using a SharePoint site (SharePoint Server 2007).
We've observed the following behaviour if you Show Comments List and enter comments for a sticky note using the comment field in this list:
If your cursor is still in the comment field when you publish, you'll get a message saying that a new comment was published, but the contents of the sticky note are missing from the other reviewers' views. They can accept the new comment and the metadata for the sticky note will appear, but the comment will be missing.
If you publish again, you'll get a message saying that a comment was updated, and then the other reviewers will see the contents of the sticky note.
If you enter comments in another sticky note (and leave the cursor in the comment field) before you publish for the 2nd time, you get a message saying 1 comment has been updated and 3 new comments have been added when you hit Publish. Why 3 new instead of 1?
If your cursor is in the comment field, and you haven't published yet, and you do any other activity (such as sorting, filtering, collapsing the discussion), then whatever you had typed in the comment field disappears.
This same behaviour has been observed for replies to sticky notes.
Comments do not go missing if you type in the sticky note pop-up, or reply in the pop-up.
The obvious workarounds are to enter sticky notes in the pop-ups instead of the Comments List, or click elsewhere on the List before doing anything else, or hit Publish twice. However, I don't think we should have to work around this. So, before I ask Adobe to fix this behaviour, has anyone else seen it? Or is there something about how to use the interface that I'm missing?
