External Hard Drive shows up as a CD?

Oboy! Just when I thought everything was cool! Just purchased a (1.0TB Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 'Jupiter' 7200RPM SATA I/II HD with 32MB Cache. Energy Efficient Performance Serial ATA 3.5" Hard Drive) and installed in a Mercury Elite-AL Pro enclosure and formatted it with 3 partitions.
I duplicated my hard drives for off premise back up (by dropping HD icons in window). Everything was working well and *now only one partition shows up*.
I ran Disk Warrior and Utilities-as all the partitions show up-and rebuilt the directories. Going to: Finder>Prefs>Show these items on desk top- I found that unclicking the "CD" box makes the External HD's icon disappear.
I think my computer recognizes this sata drive as a "CD". Can anyone tell me how to get the other 2 partitions back on my desk top?
Thank you-j

But the 3rd partition is still invisible. All 3 partitions show up in Utilities but the 3rd is not "Available".

Hi Dansyacht, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Open Terminal & paste this in, spaces are important...
chmod 777 /Volumes/
then right after the last /, carefully type the name of that external volume, & if it has spaces in it enclose the name in quote marks.

  • External hard drive showing up in iTunes but tracks are not...

    Hi,
I've read a bunch of the posts about running iTunes off an external hard drive but haven't had any luck getting my set up to work... I have an LG netbook, Western Digital 2 TB ethernet hard drive, the latest version of iTunes (updated yesterday)... Ideally I'd like to keep all of my iTunes stuff on the hard drive and access it through my netbook, iTouch, phone etc...
I followed Apple's instructions for moving iTunes to another drive - I consolidated the files, checked the box for keeping the files organized, changed the location for iTunes Media folder location to my external hard drive (when I 'Get Info' for the tracks iTunes it shows them in the external hard drive), then deleted the original iTunes Media folder... My Book Live shows up in iTunes, but does not list any tracks... I moved all of my iTunes (tv, music, ringtones, etc) to a folder I created in the external hard drive called iTunes... I did move the music from the iTunes folder to the Shared Music folder on the external hard drive, but neither location shows the tracks in iTunes...
Am I missing a step? I'm not great with computers in case that wasn't obvious But the instructions were clear and I had no problems going through them so I'm not sure what the problem could be...
Thanks for any help or tips you can offer

Okay, I run off my Ext HD all the time... I have had a couple minor problems trying to get multiple machines to use the same ext HD & iTunes library... but that's another story. LOL Maybe I just want too much. giggle Greedy me... I want my music everywhere and not always on my iPod. <g>
I'll keep working on that... Anyhooo... I can address YOUR problem at least. Cuz, I think I know what you may have done wrong. Although the library of music (i.e. all the music files) are stored on the external hard drive, iTunes will still use the iTunes LIBRARY files (i.e. the files that list what is stored where and data and junk) that are on your computer's main hard drive. So, if you deleted those files in your iTunes folder when you say you deleted the iTunes media files on your main hard drive... you may have killed its ability to find, identify and play all those files out on your external hard drive.
You should still have a number of files like:
    Sentinel
    PPTThumbs
    ITunesMusicLibrary
    ITunesLibraryGenius
    ITunesLibraryExtras
ITunesLibrary <-key one... tells it names of all your music & where files are
ITunesPreferences <-key one... tells it where you told it you stored your library
    lots of weird .tmp files
    Hope this helps

  • Hi, Question about secure empty trash. I moved some Time Machine backup files to the trash from an external hard drive. Now I can't secure empty trash. It starts, finds 74,003 files, and does nothing. The external hard drive shows it's empty, but it isn't

I moved some time machine backup files from an external USB hard drive to the trash. Tried secure empty trash. It counts 74,003 items, then just sits there. The external hard drive window shows it's empty, but the info pane says it only has 50G of memory left. I left the secure empty trash on over night. It did nothing. Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ron

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
    Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash.

  • External hard drive shows up under internal hard drive volume?

    History:
Purchased new Macbook Pro and Lightroom 2.
Migrated old Macbook to new Macbook Pro, including Lightroom 1.
Installed Lightroom 2 and updated to Lightroom 2.2.
Had Lightroom 1 images on multiple external hard drives. Moved all images to new 1tb and 1.5tb Lacie external drives.
Imported old catalog into Lightroom 2.2 and now one of the external (1.5tb) shows up under my internal hard drive in Lightroom.
internal hard drive>Volumes>external hard drive>empty image folders
A partial part of this external hard drive (some image folders) also shows up as it's own volume.
I started by selecting missing image folders and using the locate missing folder method. the folders then show up on: internal hard drive>Volumes>external hard drive>image folders
Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?
    thank you, Shawn

This is reparable, but an Adobe Tech did it. I had this problem some time ago and they fixed it. Dan Tull, one of the Adobe Techs, was accepting Catalogs for investigation and repair. Not sure if he still is.
I have not heard of such problems for a while.

  • External Hard Drive showing as Read Only

I have an external hard drive I've been using on Windows XP for the longest time. I never set any permission settings on it, and I even made it a freely shared network drive on XP. Any other Windows computer I plug the drive into, I can freely read and write. I can't write to it in Mac. I used to not even be able to view the drive at all under Tiger, but now in Leopard I can read but I can't write.
How can I change the permissions? If I try it through Windows XP there's nothing to change since there's no permission settings on it, it's freely readable and writable to all.

  • Why won't my external hard drive show up in the hard drive list in final cut pro x?

I can't figure out how to get my external hard drive to show up in the list of available drives in final cut pro x. It works just fine in iMovie 11 and every where else on my MacBook pro. The external hard drive I am trying to get to appear is an iomega 1 TB hard drive. Please help as I have a ton of footage on it and don't have the room to move it to my internal drive on the MacBook.

I have the same problem with internal drives. Only the one with the largest free space shows up. The others ”blink” in the Event viewer, and then disappear. Sounds like a bug...

From reading similar threads, and from my own experiences, the prevailing wisdom seems to be that:
    * the drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journal), not FAT32, NTFS or other
    * the drive must not be currently used as a time machine disk
    * (theory) the drive must not have previously been used a time machine disk
From my own experiences, I had 3 externals that worked w/ iMovie 11 but not w/ FCP X.  With some experimentation, I was able to confirm the above items.
    - one drive was a TM disk, and just wasn't ever going to work.  Annoying, but at least an identified issue (or bug)
    - one drive was once a TM disk but I'd stopped using it as such.  I'd manually deleted the backups on it, but suspect that TM likely leaves invisble files around to identify meta on file lists, exclusions, etc.  Showing invisibles in finder listed a plethora of files that I wasn't willing to research.  Went into disk utility, formatted as Extended Journaled, and the disk started to appear in project and event windows in FCP X.
    - one drive was formatted as NTFS.  I use Tuxera to read/write NTFS and this seemingly caused no problems in iMovie.  With numerous threads discussing FAT32/NTFS incompatability, I opted to format this disk and then restore my old iMovie events and projects.  Again, this resulted in the drive being visible in FCP X.
One note, as mentioned above, in the case of the disk wehere I restored old iMovie events/projects, the disk didn't immediately show in the events window (but did show projects immediately).  The solution was to insure that the events window was grouping events by disk.  The default layout hid away my external disk until I did this--and once grouped properly, I was able to then import my iMovie events into FCP X successfully.
Good luck...the support for exernal drives (and likely NAS) seems really poorly documented.  I lost at least two days to this.

  • External hard drives show up as empty

I've got five external hard drives, including one acting as Time Machine, connected to my Airport Extreme via a USB hub. I used to be able to connect to them easily wirelessly via Finder, but recently I haven't been able to. I can open my Airport via Finder and see the connected drives, but when I open them, I get a new Finder window that is empty.
If I unplug the USB hub from Airport and connect it to my MBP, all of the drives function as normal.
    Any suggestions most appreciated.

There are no ways that I can think of that would just cause this behaviour to happen out of nowhere, can you think of any changes recently? Any new apps or updates? Have you edited /etc/fstab (do you know what that means? ).
Does the same thing happen in another user account? Create a new user if you need to do so in System Preferences > Users & groups, login as that user & see if it is the same, a reboot would be wise too.
I suspect you should also try a safe boot
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
Many things will be slow, 'laggy' or may not work at all in safe mode - just test as much as possible, try both users too.
Reboot before you begin this. Disconnect all the disks & try them one by one. I can't see how a cable could cause the inability to mount, but it may be worth trying to isolate the disks from each other. Also try each disk in several ports - are you using a hub? Isolate that too.
Also open /Applications/Utilities/Console and look at the all messages section as you connect the cable & power on the disk.
Copy any suspicious messages, also look at /var/log/diskarbitrationd.log if you can see that (expand the sidebar & dig into the logs)
Try to avoid posting thousands of log lines, just post a few that happen around the time of the connecting.

  • Why is my external hard drive showing up twice on Time Machine?

This is the first time I am using Time Machine because somebody recently gave me an external hard drive.
The external hard drive is appearing twice on Time Machine preferences. One of them is currently backing up and the other one says "Waiting to back up" but I don't want it to back up twice on the same disk.
    Here's a screenshot:
Does anyone know why it is doing this?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil destinationinfo
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • External hard drive shows up in the shell, but not in the Finder

I have an external had drive which, until two days ago, behaved fine. At that time, it began mounting in a way such that it showed up in a shell and was responsive to shell commands, but does not appear in the Finder and does not seem responsive to Mac OS X commands.
Disk Utility says there's nothing wrong with the drive, but mounting and unmounting seem to do nothing to the Finder. Those operations affect things in the shell environment as they intuitively should.
The output of df suggests that the disk is automounted reasonably.

  • Why won't my external hard drive show up in iMovie 11?

My external USB drive - formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) shows up fine on my desktop, and worked fine with iMovie in the past.  Now, it won't show up in the event library, or in the "Save to:" menu when I try to import video.  I can see my iMovie projects and events on the drive in Finder, but iMovie just doesn't recognize the drive.  Argh!!!  Any ideas??  Thanks in advance!

  • ExFat External Hard Drive showing up as RAW on Server 2008

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Server 2008 support ExFat? I plugged an external HD to a 2008 box and it can't read it and it shows up as RAW on disk
management. I plugged it into a Server 2008 R2 and it was readable. The size of the external HD is 3TB.

    Hi Gary_Leung1,
Both Windows Vista with SP1 or later and Windows Server 2008 support exFAT with removable storage devices. Please try to assigned a drive letter to your disk if it now come
online please run  the chkdsk /f on this disk then monitor this issue again.
