Full HD AVCHD Transocde

I've just used panasonic SD5 AVCHD camcorder to shoot some 1920x1080 Full HD footage and import to FCP. After I transcoded to ProRes 422, the picture size becomes 2560 x 1080 in square pixel.
Is FCP can only support 1440x1080 AVCHD transcode?

Looks like this issue is know since it also existed in iMovie 7 and Apple just correct the problem with teh iMovie 7.1 update. The issue still exists in FCP but hopefully they also release the fix to FCP.

    I don't think Imovie'09 solve that problem, but if it does, please tell me !
    Otherwise, You can convert the video with VIDEOPIER HD or MOVIECONVERTER, and then import your video in Imovie'08.

  • JVC GZ-HD30 importing AVCHD

    I want to buy the JVC GZ-H30 camcorder but the only thing that is stopping me is the comment on the iMovie 08 compatible list stating "iMovie does not support MPEG-2 from this camcorder"
    However if I record all my footage in Full HD (AVCHD) will iMovie 08 play nice and let me import? or should I be looking at a different camcorder?

  • Can I Import AVCHD to produce Standard DVDs in PE7?

    I am in the process of evaluating new digital cameras, probably the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX700 which records 1920x 1080 Full HD movies in AVCHD format. I am using PE7 and after reading several of the Adobe forums, I still have some compatibility questions, as follows:
    (FYI: I'm using Vista Home Premium with an Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz. and 6GB RAM)
    - Please answer each of my questions, if possible. - Thanks!
    1. Can I bring the 1920x 1080 Full HD AVCHD format into PE7 AND PS7 as easily as with my MPEG and MJPEG formats?
    2. I have read that the AVCHD videos experienced "jitter" when used in PE7.
    a. Is this to be expected with PE7 and AVCHD?
    b. If a problem can be avoided, which NTSC presets do I use?
    3. I want to create a project containing still photos and movies mixed together; then burn to a standard DVD; play the DVD with jitter free, movie quality comparable to that obtained with my MPEG and MJPEG movies on a non-BlueRay player and view the project on a 50" plasma TV. I am NOT interested in burning a BlueRay or an AVCHD formatted DVD.

    Actually, AVCHDs load into Premiere Elements EASIER THAN mjpegs because the program is designed to use them (as long as you set up your project with a project preset that matches your AVCHD source specs).
    Version 9 will even edit AVCHDs natively. That means that you don't have to render them before you edit them, as you did in earlier versions (including version 9). If you're going to edit AVCHDs, you really should get version 9. It handles them much more effciently.
    But regardless, you won't see jitter related to the source files. Not with AVCHDs, if your project is set up properly.
    You WILL however, need a powerful computer. At least a quad core or i7 computer. Otherwise the program will work very slowly.
    The best advice for creating a DVD is to output your finished AVCHD video first using Share/To Computer/AVI using the DV settings. Then open a new project set up for DV, load the AVI to your timeline and output your DVD from there (using Share/To Disc). This will give you a sharper final video and will save you hours of rendering time.

    CPU Introduction
    I tested my cpu and pushed it at maximum speed to understand where is the limit, can I reach this limit and I've logged precisely all result in graph (See pictures 1).
    Intro : I tested my E5-XEON 2687W (8 Cores Hyperthread - 16 threads) to know if programs can use the maximum of it.  I used Prime 95 to get the result.  // I know this seem to be ordinary, but you will understand soon...
    The result : Yes, I can get 100% of my CPU with 1 program using 20 threads in parallel.  The CPU gives everything it can !
    Comment : I put 3 IO (cpu, disk, ram) on the graph of my computer during the test...

    I rendered the sequence (H.264) using Adobe Media Encoder.
    The result :
    My CPU is not used at 100%, the turn around 50%
    My Disk is totally idle !
    All the process usage are idle except process of (Adobe Media Encoder)
    The transfert rate seem to be a wave (up and down).  Probably caused by (Encrypt time....  write.... Encrypt time.... write...)  // It's ok, ~5Mb/sec during transfert rate !
    CPU Power management give 100% of clock to CPU during the encoding process (it's ok, the clock is stable during process).
    RAM, more than enough !  39 Go RAM free after the test !  // Excellent
    ~65 thread opened by Adobe Media Encoder (Good, thread is the sign that program try to using many cores !)
    GPU Load on card seem to be a wave also ! (up and down)  ~40% usage of GPU during the process of encoding.
    GPU Ram get 1.2Go of RAM (But with GTX 680, no problem and Quadro 6000 with 6 GB RAM, no problem !)
    Comment/Question : CPU is free (50%), disks are free (99%), GPU is free (60%), RAM is free (62%), my computer is not pushed at limit during the encoding process.  Why ????  Is there some time delay in the encoding process ?

    Comment/Question : Look at the transfert rate under (picture 5).  It's exactly the same speed than with my RAID 0 LSI controller.  Impossible !  Look in the same picture the transfert rate I can reach with the ramdrive (> 3.0 Gb/sec steady) and I don't go under 30% of disk usage.  CPU is idle (70%), Disk is idle (100%), GPU is idle (100%) and RAM is free (63%).  // This kind of results let me REALLY confused.  It's smell bug and big problem with hardware and IO usage in CS6 !

    Other : Quadro 6000 is slower than GTX 680 for this kind of encoding (~20 s slower than GTX).

    Conclusion
    There is nothing you can do (I thing) with CS6 to get better performance actually.  GTX 680 is the best (Consumer grade card) and the Quadro 6000 is the best (Profressional card).  Both of card give really similar result (I will probably return my GTX 680 since I not really get any better performance).  I not used Tesla card with my Quadro, but actually, both, Premiere Pro & After Effects doesn't use multi GPU.  I tried to used both card together (GTX & Quadro), but After Effects gives priority to the slower card (In this case, the GTX 680)
    Premiere Pro, I'm speechless !  Premiere Pro is not able to get max performance of my computer.  Not just 10% or 20%, but average 60%.  I'm a programmor, multi-threadling apps are difficult to manage and I can understand Adobe's programmor.  But actually, if anybody have comment about this post, tricks or any kind of solution, you can comment this post.  It's seem to be a bug...

    I can't explain everything, but let me give you some background as I understand it.
    The first issue is that CS6 has a far less efficient internal buffering or caching system than CS5/5.5. That is why the MPEG encoding in CS6 is roughly 2-3 times slower than the same test with CS5. There is some 'under-the-hood' processing going on that causes this significant performance loss.
    The second issue is that AME does not handle regular memory and inter-process memory very well. I have described this here: Latest News
    As to your test results, there are some other noteworthy things to mention. 3D Ray tracing in AE is not very good in using all CUDA cores. In fact it is lousy, it only uses very few cores and the threading is pretty bad and does not use the video card's capabilities effectively. Whether that is a driver issue with nVidia or an Adobe issue, I don't know, but whichever way you turn it, the end result is disappointing.
    The overhead AME carries in our tests is something we are looking into and the next test will only use direct export and no longer the AME queue, to avoid some of the problems you saw. That entails other problems for us, since we lose the capability to check encoding logs, but a solution is in the works.
    You see very low GPU usage during the H.264 test, since there are only very few accelerated parts in the timeline, in contrast to the MPEG2-DVD test, where there is rescaling going on and that is CUDA accelerated. The disk I/O test suffers from the problems mentioned above and is the reason that my own Disk I/O results are only 33 seconds with the current test, but when I extend the duration of that timeline to 3 hours, the direct export method gives me 22 seconds, although the amount of data to be written, 37,092 MB has increased threefold. An effective write speed of 1,686 MB/s.
    There are a number of performance issues with CS6 that Adobe is aware of, but whether they can be solved and in what time, I haven't the faintest idea.

  • Can's see my events saved on my NAS

    After the upgrade my external hard drive which contains all my events movies have the yellow triangle sign next to it with ! mark. It use to work fine with imove 08. what should I do to be able to see my movies. Alternatively can i downgrade.

    Thanks for the response. The WD HDD has both FW400 and 800. Problem is my iMac only has FW400. The drive is shared through the iMac via an ethernet connection to a Gigabit Cisco modem/router. I am accessing the WD 1TB from my new 15" MBP over the network through ethernet. I think the bottlenecks are in the iMac since it is limited to FW400 and it doesn't have Gigabit ethernet. The event files are full HD/AVCHD so I think they need both fast FW and ethernet. As someone suggested in an earlier post, I'll try to add the WD 1TB HDD to the "privacy" box in spotlight to stop it from searching and indexing it. I hope it works. It's a real pain to have to physically connect the HDD to the MBP FW every time.

    I just changed over my PE9 to an i7 2600 on a Gigabyte motherboard Z86 UD 3R with 8g ram . 64bit Windows7
    The improvement is trully amazing compared with my old Core duo
    I am using my 2 year old Radeon HD4350. It plays full HD AVCHD in full screen flawlessly in Windows Media Player.on my 1900x1200 monitor
    Everything I shoot is in full HD 1900x1080i 25 frames
    Preview is perfectly smooth when rendered. No crashes yet!
    Preview of clip areas with red lines is mostly OK but a bit jerky at times. If I pause and restart preview it fixes the jerk
    My question is would there be any improvement in previewing smoothness of unrendered material if I went to a faster graphics card?.

    I agree with Neale. When using PrE, the biggest requirement for a video card will be the updated drivers. So long as ATI/AMD supports the card, and issues new drivers for it constantly, a newer, faster video card will not provide much of an improvement with the exception of the very few GPU Effects.
    Now, with PrPro, as of CS 5, things are greatly different, in that with certain nVidia cards, much processing is handed off to the GPU through the Mercury Playback Engine (MPE) and the card's CUDA function. MPE has not made its way into PrE yet.
    With most HD material, the biggest BFTB ("Bang For the Buck") is upgrading the CPU, such as you did. Next and in about a tie, will be RAM (with a 64-bit OS and 64-bit program) and additional HDD's.

  • Does someone use FCE together with Sony SR10, SR11 or SR12?

    I've tried to get a YES or NO in some discussions here and since I'm not alone with the FCE/AVCHD rendering issue, I'm kind of hoping that someone using Final Cut Express (or any other good Mac software) have got this to work. I've just tried FCE together with my camcorder once in a Mac store and the person working in the store, who showed me the new Macbook Pro didn't know anything about this either. The problem I noticed was that after import of the media from camera everything looked just fine but once I dragged one clip down on the timeline FCE had to render the clip before I could watch the project. This is not news but I wonder what settings one should use in FCE together with the Sony SR12 camcorder. Is there a way to setup the project so that FCE doesn't have to render all the time using full quality AVCHD clips? If it's not possible, is there any other Mac program that will work with AVCHD natively? Maybe the solution is to switch the camera to SD instead? What happens if I do that? If I shoot in highest MPG quality, does FCE handle those clips on the timeline without rendering the clips after every change I do?
    My thoughts about this is to get a howto/check-list from someone who know and then visit this Mac store once more with my camera and try it out.

    When you say import, did you mean the Import command in the menus? You don't use Import with AVCHD, you use the Log and Transfer command in the File Menu. That bring up another window which looks for your camera which it calls No Name and thn begins logging in each clip. From there you have to select the clips you want to load into the editor. Each of those clips must then be "rendered" by a HD Apple Intermdiate Codec, which is the rendering you see. Once "rendered" in Final Cut, when you drag them in the timeline, they are ready to go. There is no Mac Program that natively uses AVHCD, but Sony makes a product called Vegas for Windows that edits native AVCHD, though as I understand, it isn't as powerful as Final Cut.

    I'm new to video editing.  I've had limited success with making DVDs (without editing) from bundled programs that came with my PC.   I have a library of Sony Hi-8 and Mini-DV tapes, plus recent full HD AVCHD digital from a new JVC video camera.  Is ADOBE Premiere CS3, 4, or 5 suitable for a novice and will it handle the aforementioned video formats?  Should I instead be looking at ADOBE Premiere Elements or something similar?  I've watch an aquaintence use Elements 7 and it seemed to have all the tools I'd be interested in, yet I don't know if it would handle and integrate my three different formats.  My PC has a Core 2 Quad processor Q6600, NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT graphics, and 3 GB ram. Any recommendations?

    For Video Editing, you will want the Premiere fora. Note: CS5 PrPro is the current "pro" version, and PrElements is the "consumer" version. Also, for DVD authoring, the Encore Forum is for that Adobe product.

    is Encore CS5 capable of burning BD5/9 discs on DVD-+r discs?
    i mostly burn FULL HD AVCHD music videos which are only 3-5 minutes.
    i don't want to waste BD media for only 3-4 minutes.
    if Encore does do BD5/9 discs, is there a preset for it
    or do you just burn the Blu-ray project onto a DVD-+r disc?
    Any help / advice is appreciated

  • What is the best application for backing up my HD movies?

    I have a Sony HDR-CX105 which outputs in Full HD (AVCHD Format) and all I want to do is import it into my iMac (Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz) and output say an H.264 MP4 so I can distribute the file to friends.
    If I try to use iMovie (08) it says it willl take about a week to encode a half hour movie!
    I'm sure others have gone through this chain of thought so I was hoping somone may be able to help me...  PLEASE!
    I have been considering;
         Roxio Toast at £85
         Roxio Popcorn at £35
         iMove '11 at £10
    but none offer a trial to establish if it will actually work.

    My answer does not have the black Apple logo but the hardearned black belt of (bad) experience.
    There is one problem with TimeMachine. It can get corrupted out of the blue with no warning and it will not want to restore correctly (as an added "bonus" you get to find this out the "hard" way, when you need it most). Plus it takes ages for the data to be copied back, sometimes days. Haven't tried my 600gb backup on Mavericks but Mountain Lion had this knack of breaking Timemachine after a couple of months.
    To back up my entire server is use SuperDuper. It mirrors the drive to an external one (usb for example) The cool thing is you can use that usb drive and start the OS X from it (by holding Alt when you hear the boot chime).
    This way you have a working copy of your entire machine. You can even go to another mac and boot it from there. I literally ran the OS X Server in my company from a usb drive on an old MacBook Pro until i got around to fix the problems with the actual server machine.
    This has saved me twice already as the Hitachi drives Apple uses, tend to die like clockwork after 4000-5000 hours of use with no warning.

    PS. As a sidenote... SSDs are more reliable than a normal HDD (not to mention faster) I can't stress this enough, my Server is on two SSDs now. I can't tell you how stress free the setup is, it doesn't feel like a computer but more like a router, it just works... forever. After two years with SSDs my server has had two days of downtime and their health is at 97%, they will literally last 100 years with normal use. I'd go so far as to recommend you buy an SSD and move your old HDD to an external enclosure and use that as a usb backup. (for SSDs i use Plextor / Lite-On M3s (older) or the M6s (newer))

    11 clips with no cuts or transitions for a total sequence lenght of 10 minutes
    Clips are in full hd (Avchd from a sony consumer cameras)
    I send to encore to create a blu ray disk.
    5.52 encoding time = 3.33 minutes
    6.01 encoding time = 7.25 minutes
    recording on blu ray disk on bd-rw (2x) about 4 minutes for both
    I saw some posts that certified cs6 is slower than cs 5.5.
    Are my results correct?
    May I have a problem with my setup?

    Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

    24 gb ddr3 cl 9 1600 mhz

    My system is quite similar and I do see a slight difference in H.264 encoding performance on my PPBM5.5 benchmarks using both CS5.and CS6.  But our workflows are quite different in PPBM5.5 and in real life I encode either as a direct export from Premiere or in PPBM5 via AME as opposed to doing it in Encore.  Looking at my results (BillG) I see CS 5.5 a score of 43 seconds with a GTX580 and CS6 a score of 59 seconds.  Both scores at a clock of 4.2 GHZ and the much higher (in my case) project disk array.
    If you want to try a direct export from the timeline it would be interesting to see how that compares to the dynamic linking from Premiere to Encore.  I do not think that ADdobe changed the encoder, it is possible that there now is just more code in between applications for many new features that CS6 has.

  • How to Fix quality issues with video in Premiere Elements?

    I am uning Premiere Elements 10 on a HP computer with sufficient RAM and an i5 processor.  When I upload footage from my Canon Vixia HF r20, it looks fine using Windows media player to play it back, but after putting it into premiere elements 10 using Full HD AVCHD presets (NTSC), it appears grainly and vertival lines are pixelated.  This has not been a problem in the past when I have used the same camera and presets.  What am I doing wrong?

    You don't say how you're judging the quality -- if you've output the video, if you're watching a DVD or if you're just viewing it in the Monitor.
    Use Share/Computer/Windows Media WMV to ouput a WMV file. How does it look at 100% (not full screen)? Can you post this WMV to Vimeo so we can see it?

    Apple needs to get with the times! Sorry, but it's the truth. I'm not denigrating Apple, but they are living in a false reality if they think that AVCHD/Blu Ray is not the standard now, or that it's just going to go away because they refuse to acknowledge it or incorporate it into their products.
    The assumption for many years has been that if you had a video camera, you should buy a Mac and it will be able to edit your videos right out of the box and burn them to a disc for playback on your computer. But it's simply not the case anymore.
    I have customers come to my store and purchase AVCHD camcorders, and I got really tired of having to explain to people who came back with patches of hair missing where they pulled it out, that, "Sorry the Mac does not support the current HD standard."
    "Huh? What?"
    "That's right, it does not support AVCHD playback nor does it support Blu Ray."
    "Really? Why?"
    "I don't know."
    "OK, well, what am I supposed to do? I just want to copy HD files to my Mac from off my camcorder and watch them."
    "Sorry, not possible. Well, you could try VLC... but it will be choppy and horrific, unless you can somehow decipher its arcane preferences and get it to play those files back smooth, but I've been doing this for 20 years and I have no clue how to make VLC work for smooth AVCHD playback on a newer model iMac."
    "OK.. well, how do I get them burned to disc?"
    "Well, you could import them into iMovie, which requires transcoding the video into a much, much larger format, that takes a lot of time --"
    "-- but wait, I bought a flash memory camcorder because I wanted to avoid the long camera to computer transfer times that plagued my life with a tape-based camcorder. But you're telling me now I have to wait hours and hours to capture my 120gb hard drive full of AVCHD video to my Mac in HD?"
    "Yes, that's correct. Oh, and if you want to burn it to AVCHD/Blu Ray, you'll have to buy Toast and an external Blu Ray burner. That'll run you about.. $400. Oh, and when you do this, it will have to re-encode the video back into AVCHD, which will take *at least as long* as when you captured it in iMovie in the first place. And that 120GB of video is going to require... a LOT more than 120GB to store on your computer."
    "$400?! I thought Mac came with the latest technology and supported the latest standards! More than 120GB? What the heck, why?"
    "I'm sorry, but Apple transcodes it out of its native format, into some intermediary codec that eats up exponentially more space."
    "Why the heck do they do that?"
    "I don't know. Adobe Premiere Elements is the only consumer editing package that supports AVCHD natively, yet it only runs on PC. You could buy Premiere Pro CS4 but .. don't ask the price of that. Look, I don't know what to tell you. Buy Windows, install it, buy Premiere Elements, install that, and then buy Roxio Creator 2010 Pro, to burn your Blu Rays, and buy an external Blu Ray burner."
    "Or just buy a PC that ships with Blu Ray?"
    "**** no. Just wait.. until some undetermined future time.. when Apple finally decides to get with the times... <<sigh>>"
    Anyway look. Currently Mac doesn't support the latest standards. I frequently have customers come to my camera shop, which is in the same mall as an Apple store, and I've had this conversation over, and over, and over again.
    Anyone who disagrees that AVCHD is the standard needs to consider the fact that they are totally wrong.

  • Which software?

    I'm a novice regarding video editing.  I have a collection of old Sony Hi-8 and Mini-DV tapes which I want to edit and save as DVDs.  I also have a recent Full HD(AVCHD) digital video camera that I want to do the same thing with.  Regarding Premiere Elements 8; will it allow me to import and edit all three of the formats I've mentions here?  I'm confident the the full HD isn't an issue, my main concern being the older Hi-8 and Mini DV tapes that I want to convert to digital before the tapes deteriorate.  Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Well, yes. And no.
    Yes, you can use each of those formats. HDV and miniDV will go right in, since they're digital formats. Just don't put them in the same project, since they require different project specs. (You can downsample HDV using DV Lock to capture it as miniDV. In that case, you can use both miniDV and that format in the same project.)
    Capturing your hi-8 analog video will require a DV bridge, per the FAQS to the right of this forum, unless you know someone with a Digital8 camcorder that can capture hi8 and 8mm as DV.

    But if all you want to do is turn your footage into DVDs without doing any major editing, Premiere Elements is not the most efficient way to go. In that case, you may just want to use a Plextor ConvertX -- and save yourselves the hassles, system demands and expense of working with a video editing app.
