How do I stop i-tunes from changing the genres for my songs without my consent?

Lately, itunes has been taking the genres I've set for my songs and changing them without my consent or say so. I change them back to what I want, i-tunes changes it back to what it wants, etc..
For example, I might list something as "Rock", but i-tunes decides it's "Pop" or "Alternate Rock" and edits my file's meta-data unilaterally. I might decide I want a category called "Christmas Music", but i-tunes decides the genre is "Holiday Music". I even have a few songs labeled "Urban", and i-tunes tries to change them to "Hip-Hop/Rap" or "Rap/Hip-hope". I took a lot of time with my large music collection to get this stuff exactly the way I wanted it- simplified. I-tunes is screwing it up.
This is *my* music. I even bought it all legally on a limited budget. I get to decide what genre I want it listed as.
Is there a setting or something I can change to get i-tunes to stop messing my music genre data? Or do I have to find a new music player?
I've got a long suffering ipod classic I was thinking of replacing at some point, but I may leave the i-tunes ecosystem entirely over this instead. To make things worse, my ipod with it's troubled syncing and broken buttons now has to deal with constantly recopying files with new genres every time I sync and itunes or I have changed something in our constant man versus machine battle- just try have hundreds of songs recopied each time without an error on something that barely can handle normal syncing after reconnecting 10 times or so every sync because it doesn't take the first 9 times.
I don't want to fight my music player. I just want the thing to work and do what I instruct it to do. Either that or I'm going to have to rename it "HAL" and start calling myself "Dave" ala 2001: A Space Odessy. Because this thing seems to be turning on me.

Ugh. I thought I was exagerating when I said song name changes were next. Apparently, I was literally correct. I haven't seen it yet personally, but Tooltomus says he has.
I thought the genre changes had stopped, only to see that they'd started up again a few minutes ago. This is getting really old really fast.
Again, why does Apple seem to think it can do whatever it wants to our bought and paid for music without our permission? This isn't about interface changes or whatever, which are all well within their rights, but to actually alter our files themselves without asking or even notifying us. They've got to be kidding... Isn't there some way to turn this off?
Why are they doing this? What's the point of it? Is it intentional or some kind of bug? Is anyone from Apple going to bother to even tell us?
I feel like I had some great music software and a great music player. I've used them for hours every day for years. I really love smart playlists and a whole bunch of features. It's very upsetting to see them go in this direction.
You know, record companies and music sellers have been pushing the idea of legally purchased files for years, saying it's just the same as CDs or whatever. And I've been dutifully buying my files this whole time from various legal sellers instead of pirating them. And now they're basically doing the equivalent of breaking into my home and messing around with my CDs- scrobbling all over the covers and album booklets, etc..

Anyone know how to turn this off? Would going back to itunes 10 help or is this coming from the server to every version of itunes? Is there other music player software that will leave my music alone that will preserve my playcounts, ratings, playlists, last played, and so on and so forth, and support syncing to my ipod? Can I somehow cut itunes off from contacting apple's servers to look up information and make these changes?

No, an external drive will not always be mounted. If the drive goes to sleep, it can unmount, or it may unmount for other reasons. As Chris said, confim that the drive is mounted and active before launching iTunes.

Put a passcode on the account. That way, he will have to know the passcode to change the plan. If he doesn't know the passcode, he can't change the account.

you may find that WMP is doing this for you.
There is a setting is WMP that means that it checks the info held in the file (and shown by itunes) against that held at Gracenote and 'updates' the info where there is any disagreement. On my copy its under the 'media library' tab.
Turn this off if its on.

If you stick to one thread, perhaps you may find a solution. ed2345 is the fourth person to offer help, and yet you respond each time by creating a new thread instead of explaining (in the first thread) why the previous solution hasn't worked for you.
But why exactly are you concerned about the genre anyway? A song can be in as many playlists as you wish, it has nothing to do with genre, unless you are creating Smart Playlists that use Genre as a rule of the list. If so, you have already been offered two solutions:
create a second copy of the song and edit that second copy to the second Genre.
use Grouping to cause the only copy of the song to be added to two separate Playlists.
By the way, creating new threads and thereby ignoring those who have offered help in existing threads is impolite.

You should be able to edit any of a song's metadata elements (including title and genre) using right-click > Get Info. In the new iTunes 12 dialog, the Genre field should allow you to type in a genre or select from a dropdown (which offers a combination of iTunes' built-in genres + those you've defined yourself):
If you SHIFT right-click > Get Info you can also access the "old style" dialog and enter the genre there.
Are you unable to enter the genre, or having done so is the value held by iTunes not being updated? If the latter, then you may have an issue with the permissions on your media files or the files may be set to read-only.

I am trying to change the genre on my Christmas songs to Christmas instead of Holiday and it will not change. Have done this in the past so I'm confused as to why it won't work now. I had to reinstall all my music from a external hard drive after having to reset my computer, did I do something wrong?

Highlight all the songs in your library (ctrl+a, edit-->select all, etc.)
Now right click one of the songs, making sure that all remain highlighted, and go to get info. Click Yes to the message that pops up. You should be able to adjust the volume in that window. Click OK when you are done. The volume should now be adjusted for all songs.

You have to disable it on the tracks themselves too. The 'main' flex button only turns on and off Flex view, and not flex itself.

The separate grups of songs from same album add to the album contents. i-Tunes didn´t use to do this until when the format was "improved" a few months ago.
No good news. It is very difficult to manage and sync the albums, not the songs.

How do I stop I-Tunes from losing my album art?

I-Tunes is losing the album art that I pasted into the song files. Sometimes it loses it for the entire album, sometimes for a few songs of the album and sometimes for none of the songs.
I can't figure out what is going on, but I spent a great deal of time to copy art to my files only to keep losing them. The only common thread I can find is that when my art is lost, I get a string of numbers in the comment section.

Looking at my files, I noticed a few trends on the songs that lose the album art vs the songs that keep the album art.
1) I only seem to have problems with losing the art on songs that have an ID3 tag of 2.3.
2) An ID3 tag of 2.2 seems to work with the album art. In fact, when I have some songs in 2.2 and some in 2.3, the art is only lost on those with the 2.3 tag.
3) If you have two different tags, you can remove the ID3 tag, then go back and edit it to be 2.2. Then add the art, so far that has worked to keep the art.
4) If I can't change the id3 tag, then I just convert the file to MP3 again and it saves it with a 2.2 tag
5) Losing the album art is not an issue with the 6.01.05 version, since I have the 6.01.03 version and had that issue.
6) Not sure if this works in keeping the second number of the track info, since I was not keeping that data.
I'm going to try this on a couple of hundred songs or so, then see what happens over the next week or so. If it sticks, then I'll go back to saving the album art.
