I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought iPad (today). What hardware do I need to set up wireless LAN so iPad can be used anywhere in house? Will Linksys work with Apple?

I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought an iPad2 and need to know what hardware do I need to add wireless LAN so I can use iPad anywhere in the house. Will a Linksys router work with Apple? Can Mac be "hardwired" and iPad wireless? Probably stupid questions but I need to learn. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. You are correct. I was speaking in general terms here based on my experience with the two devices in day to day use, and not in terms of exact specifications.
A better choice would have been to say that the "coverage" is about the same with the edge going to the Extreme....due to the newer mutliple antenna design.
We sure could use more help on the forums. Hope that you will become a regular.
Hi Bob
RF is a minefield, but one that I have worked in for ages, the most critical factor in my experience is location, location, location!
Better routers have more intelligently designed antenna systems, output power as I said is the same, radiation pattern (coverage) is dependent on antennas and physical location more than all other factors.

It should be much easier to re-link in the Pagemaker file, as, with any luck, you can get the filenames from the Graphics Manager.  After conversion to InDesign, any out-of-date linked images get their names converted to something like "image 123.jpg", and are themselves converted to an embedded low res representation of the image.  Even vectored art.  Pretty hard to figure them out, unless you are VERY familiar with the file, which you may be.
It may be that any cropping gets lost, too?  I do prepress work, we do some set up for our customers, but most comes in pretty much ready to go, so I don't often have to did too deep into fixing such issues. On the other hand, any problem that can happen has probably crossed my desk, or it seems that way some days!

  • Can a 256K download speed /64K Upload speed work with Apple TV?

My connection speed is 256K/64K, does it work with Apple TV?

I'm sure it will work, just very slowly for accessing itunes Store content such as rentals.
I'm on a relatively slow connection of 1Mbps and I'd say a standard def 100 min movie might take 4 hours to download so you could at least quadruple that. A HD movie rental is larger and I have to download over say 10-12 hours (eg overnight for following day viewing or whilst at work), so again you could probably quadruple that.
Once a purchase/rebtal had downloaded fully it will playback normally regardless of connection speed.
Also your home network is likely to be much faster than your internet connection so anything compatible you play back via your iTunes should work fine.
Where you may see problems will be with movie trailers, YouTube and online photo access - they will work to some degree but you'd probably get a video start playing then stop/start having to rebuffer all the time (this happens to me with trailers). Online photos (eg Flickr/MobileMe) will undoubtedly work, just more slowly.
So, for compatible music/video you own and resides in itunes, playback should be fine. Rentals may take a day or a couple of days to fully download so you'd need to plan ahead - if your video store is round the corner you'd probably stick with it!
Also remember that if you are downloading a large file like a movie/movie rental it will hog your internet bandwidth and slow other internet access from your computer. You may also want to check if your ISP has download caps in place or charges per GB downloaded for example.

  • Can anyone recommend a printer which will actually work with mac 10.4.11 ?

Hi all! I have had problems getting a printer which will actually work with my macbook 10.4.11. I've tried HP deskjet f4180 (supposed to be compatible) and various lexmarks (no compatible software). Apple and hp, and my local curry's have not been able to assure me which printer will DEFINATELY work. I just wanted to hear from other Mac users with 10.4.11, if they had actually been able to find a printer which works properly. Would be greatful for any recommendations of printer's which are actually compatible with the updated tiger 10.4.11
    Many thanks.
    Crazynow!!

I read your previous posts, but had just upgraded to 10.4.11 & hadn't check my printers. All 3 of these work: Apple laserwriter 360, Brother HL 1440, and Brother MFC 7820N. I print to all of these wirelessly via airport.

  • Will this work with Apple TV?

    Hi guys,
Sorry I'm a bit confused on the apple tv requirements, and found this TV for a good deal: http://www4.shopping.com/xPF-Sony-KV-20FS100
Hoping it will work with an apple tv ...
    Thanks!

I see it has 1x component input, so assuming it'll handle the AppleTV's component out which can go from 480/576i upwards you should get a picture.
The downside is that AppleTv is really designed for widescreen 16:9 TVs and it has no user adjustements to make the picture look correct on a 4:3 set. You migt be able to get the Tv to display the 16:9 signal with black bars above and below (check the manual), but to be honest it's not going to give you the best viewing experience compared to a 16:9 TV.

  • Airport Express: can't connect to internet via adsl modem

I have an old Airport Express which has worked fine in the past and a new ADSL internet account which works fine when I connect to it via PPoE Built-in-Ethernet. But despite following all the instructions in the Airport Setup Assistant I can't get Airport to work with the new modem (it works fine for AirTunes though). The thing is I don't really get how it could work with the new modem seeing as the Airport Setup Assistant doesn't ask me at any point what the username or password is for the new account.
I guess I'm missing something obvious here. Does anyone have any ideas what it is?

Thanks again, I tried that but it didn't work either. Going back to basics, it might help if I tried to set out what I'm trying to take in a bit more detail:
    1. Having just moved house I have a new ADSL line and modem installed by the phone company and a new ISP that has provided me with a username and a password. Using those I have no trouble getting internet via an ethernet cable connecting my iBook and the Modem.
    2. I plug the ethernet cable into my AX and then plug the AX into the wall.
    3. Then I follow the AX set up assistant guide for setting up a new base station.
    4. I click the box for DSL or Cable Modem. I don't click the box for Router
    5. This is the step I'm most unsure about. Because it is the default option I click the box for DSL or Cable modem ... or over Ethernet with an IP address assigned automatically using DHCP." I do not tick "I do not use DHCP". But I don't really know what that means.
    6. AX tells me that it is configured as follows: TCP/IP: using DHCP and IP Address: Provided automatically.
    7. When I open Safari it tells me that I'm not connected to the internet. Clicking the network diagnistics box gives me green lights for everything up to and including ISP but not for the internet.
Someone here mentioned that I might have to reconfigure my modem as a router. Is there anything to that?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Can't connect to internet via DSL

    Hi,
I have recently signed up to a new ISP with a DSL broadband connection. The ISP supplied me with a DSL modem which i connect to my iMac G5 via an ethernet cable.
My ISP advised me that I need to connect using DHCP. When I try to connect in the Network settings in System Preferences it picks up a self assigned IP address (169.XXX...)
I contacted my ISP and they said that the problem is on my end as they were able to ping various addresses from my modem.
I ran Network Diagnostics and got to the stage where it asked me to restart my external modem. I did this but it could not detect the modem. My ISP has advised me that my DSL modem is compatible with Macs.
Please can somebody help me to overcome this problem.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Open Network preferences, select the Ethernet port and click on the Configure button. Click on the TCP/IP tab in the window and set the Configure IPv4 drop down menu for DHCP. Click the Apply button.
Now shut down the modem, router (if you use one,) and the computer. As a brody has suggested wait at least one minute. Then in sequence, first, turn on the modem and wait until the status lights indicate communication with the ISP; second, turn on the router and wait until the status light indicates communication with the modem; lastly, turn on the computer. Open Network preferences again, go to the TCP/IP window per above instructions and verify you have a valid IP address (should not be 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.)

Try Safari > Preferences > Advanced and down the botton tick Show Develop Menu In Menu Bar. Now you will see Develop in the top menu in Safari, click on it to open the drop down window, go to User Agent and select Internet Explorer and see if this allows you to open the page. Otherwise, as Deggie said, it's up to a Windows Install on your Mac through Bootcamp or Paralells or the like to run IE within Windows.

  • Remotes will not work with Apple TV

I am so very frustrated with my Apple TV right now. It has worked flawlessly for over a year, using both the Apple TV remote and the Apple remote on my iPhone.
A couple of weeks ago, my ATV Remote stopped working, but I figured it was the battery. I happily continued with the iPhone Remote, but then yesterday that also stopped working. I replaced the ATV Remote, but still no luck. I have tried re-pairing the ATV and ATV Remote, but get no flashes of confirmation.
I finally hooked up the ATV to my PC via Firewire and restored it to original. I hooked it back up to my TV and it came on with all of channels that I am used to seeing. However, STILL no communication between either of the remotes.
If I had not recently purchased a great speaker set for the ATV television (main room), I would just chuck it and get another Roku, but I would miss my iTunes music soooo much.
    Can anyone help???

    Thanks, Vazndrew, for the reply.
As a last resort, today I deleted the remote app from my 5S, reinstalled it, but I am still getting the message: "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account XXXXX.com"
Since the beginning of this fiasco, I have turned Home Sharing on and off and on again in iTunes on my computer, and verified it is also turned on on my 5S. I have no idea how to turn it on in the ATV since I cannot get a remote to work. Hooking it up to the PC does not seem to give that option either.
Not sure if I should see it or not, but hooked up to the the PC, in iTunes the ATV does not show as a device.

  • Lost the ability to connect to Internet via DSL

I am running Boot Camp and on the PC side right now because I cannot connect to the Internet on the Mac side!
When I attempt to connect, I get an error message that led me to investigate the Network Connections setup within System Preferences.
However, when I opened up the Network Connections box, a drop-down window appeared immediately to tell me that "another application changed my network settings." I was given only one box to click, titled "okay." Even, though I wasn't okay with that, what else could I click, so I clicked it. The drop-down box disappeared for only an instant, just to reappear. Again and again. I could not check any settings or adjust a thing because when this box drops down, all other areas of the Network Connections box are rendered inoperable. The only way to get rid of the drop-down box is to Force Quit Network Settings.
So, does anyone have an idea 1) why I am getting the drop-down box?; 2) how to STOP getting it?; and, most importantly, how to diagnose the inability to connect to the Internet on the Mac?

    UPDATE!!!
Okay, here is what I have (finally) discovered. In the PPPoE settings, for some reason, an incorrect password was stored. When I changed the password to the correct one, everything works as expected and I instantly am logged on to the Internet!
However, trying to get my correct password to be stored there is not happening! I enter it and then click the lock and accept the change. But, as soon as I do, the password reverts back to the shorter, incorrect one!!!
So, as a temporary fix, I have disabled the SAVE PASSWORD button, which (I think) means I will have to manually enter the password each time I logon. Heck, at this point, I don't care!
Why I cannot seem to get the correct password to stay saved is beyond my comprehension right now.
