"I wish I knew then what I know now" - tips from Zen Xtra Veterans to Newb

I've just purchased a 60 GB Zen Xtra and very much looking forward to building a library... I've been perusing the forum here and was hoping that some Zen Xtra veterans might offer their top 5 tips to a newbie
While this is my first Mp3 player, I've been downloading and burning concerts to CDs for years, so I'm sure I'll be able to figure out the basics on my own... really looking for those tips that "they don't tell you about" that often make a big difference in a positi've experience
FYI - for what its worth, the majority of what I'll be putting on my Zen Xtra will be free and legal concerts available at www.archi've.org -
While it seems like many of these shows are "tagged" with song title, artist and date of show, it seems that many simply retain only the file and track number designation
for example, the 5th track from a 2-25-990 Grateful Dead concert will probably appear as gd90-02-25dt05_vbr.mp3
So rather than "renaming" each track I think I'm just going to have to accept the fact that the name of the song itself will not appear - and I can deal with that as I expect to have my player set to a random shuffle for the most part anyway, or will otherwise listen to any concert straight through
So if there are any other helpfulf hints from Zen Xtra vets who have a lot of jambands downloaded, I'd appreciate your input and advice...
For example - as with burning a show to CD, in listening to a concert I'd prefer not to endure a 2 second delay from song to song within a sho - is there a setting so that there is no "gap" between songs in a concert, as the tunes often run together?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback - I'll look into this and at least learn how to properly tag, determine how much time and effort it takes (I'm somewhat lazy)
From a practical standpoint however, the jamband concerts I will listen to will have songs that are played on numerous nights (the draw for fans is that no two versions are ever the same, and in fact are often quite different)
As such the same song will appear many many times in my library - I don't expect to go "looking" for a particular song and and although I might consider bookmarking some better performances, ultimately I imagine I'll cue up a show and simply skip ahead past any songs I don't like
In that sense I think I'm different from a lot of users who use the Zen Xtra - and with the file names already reflecting band name, and the date of the concert - I expect that should be good enough for me as I would likely be inclined to listen to an entire show
Really appreciate the feedback though - thanks... and still am wondering whether or not there are going to be "gaps" between songs and if there's any way around that

  • Wish iTunes would display what's playing now on all your radio stations

Can't somebody write a script to do this? I've written one that will make it play each of the stations in turn and record the track to the Description column. But there must be some way to retrieve the currently playing track and artist from each station without having to actually play them.
Ideally, they would update themselves as aeach new track was played. So if a song/artist came up that you really wanted to hear you could just call up that station...

If you have an iPod Touch, you could use the Remote application. I believe that it then shows you what's playing in iTunes on the Touch screen.

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

    Hi
I have just joined itunes match and want to know what I do now.  Do I delete all the music on my iphone and ipad and if so how?  Once I've done that how do I find the music on the cloud on my phone/ipad?

Go to Settings > General > Usage, select Music, then Edit. There will be a delete option there. It may take a few minutes to delete if you have a large collection on your iPhone.

I have no clue what you mean by "all the different methods."  Here are my suggestions.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • What does knowing the number of "views" tell us about a thread.

10 Points to the person who can give a cogent, rational, non-apologetic answer to the questions posed below, which are based on the premiss set forth just before it. (Please feel free, if you see fit, to dispute the premiss).
    PREMISS:
People might "look" at a thread for a whole host of reasons -- whether it be to read the thread and contribute, or just to lurk, or because the thread's title was ambiguous, or funny, or in some other way remarkable apart from any substantive value it may have, or, even, just by accident, because the person clicked on the wrong button and inadvertently "looked" at the thread for a nanosecond before exiting. And probably for other reasons as well.....
    QUESTION:
In light of the foregoing, what does knowing the number of "views" tell us other than what it says, i.e., does it tell us anything apart from the number of people that have for whatever reason literally just taken a look at the thread?
If the answer to the above question is nothing -- i.e., the number of "views" tells us just that, the number of "views" and nothing more -- then why is this information so prominently featured, instead of, say, the information that used to be present under the old Discussions system, such as the number of unread posts in a particular thread, which is data that actually has a value as something other than a statistic. Knowing the number of unread posts indicates to someone following a particular thread, whether there has been additional contributions to the thread that should be reviewed if one is to remain current on the substance of that particular discussion. The extent of the additional contributions (if any) are readily apparent from the count).
The little, difficult-to-discern-on-my-PowerBook's-screen tiny blue dot can hardly be said to take the place of the unread post count, as it shows the same indicator for one new post as it does for ten or even a hundred.
Thanks for your help with this.

    Hi Scott --
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. It did help, and I've even marked it "helpful" under the new, bizarre point system to evidence this fact. (BTW, my "offer" of a point award was more a misplaced attempt at sardonic humor aimed at deriding the new point system, with which I have a number of strong disagreements, than it was an effort to bribe thoughtful replies like yours. Please know that I really do appreciate the time and effort you took to get back to me on this and meant no disrespect by the "reward" point bounty).
That said, I do have one follow up. You write that "the idea behind this [use of "views" rather than number of posts unread] is that even discounting curiosity, boredom, funny title, et al., the number of folks that have looked at a thread should bear some relation to the number of folks who are having that issue."
I just don't think that that's the case. I don't think it sufficently discounts curiosity, boredom, funny title, et al. Those are some pretty powerful motivations for people to peruse this site. And there are many, many others as well.
Of course I can only speak with certainty of my own personal experience with the Discussions, but based on that, I know have "viewed" numerous threads on subject matters that not only wasn't I experiencing, but on subject matters that I couldn't possibly experience, because it concerned Mac hardware or software that I don't own or have never used.
In some cases, I looked at threads where the subject line sounded interesting, or amusing, or provocative, in other cases I looked at threads that concerned hardware or software that I once owned (and so I thought I might be able to help with the problem at issue), in still other cases the thread concerned software and/or hardware that I was considering purchasing (and wanted to know what I might be getting into). With regard to the former of those two reasons, I know there were many, many instances where, based on the title of the post, I knew that I could help and I viewed the post as a form of oversight (so to speak) to make sure that the responses being left were providing accurate and complete information.
In my "view," though clearly not in the "view" of the Mods, et al. for reasons (thanks to your post) that I can at least better articulate (if not understand or agree with), a thread's number of "views" is susceptible to just too many possible meanings to make it of any real use. The number of unread posts (and by this I refer to the old numeric value of posts not yet read and not that illegible little blue dot used in the new system) may not be perfect information, but it is certainly more useful in my "view" than the number of "views." (I apologize for those poor puns on the word "view," but in my "view" they were unavoidable, sort of. See what I mean
Anyway. I really do thank you for your reply and the time and effort you took to make it. But, alas, with each hour I use these New Discussions, the more convinced I become that my continued time on here is fading. With no more hope of leveling up, with even less hope of ever receiving any tangible sign of "thanks for your help" in the form of + votes (insignificant as they were, at least they were something, everyone like to feel appreciated), with the posts much more difficult to read on my PowerBook's screen and even more difficult to keep track of, and for a bunch of other reasons (some admittedly petty, and some that strike at the core of why and how I use this site), I fear that I will soon be saying farewell.
But till then, thanks once again for your thoughtful reply.

Good day, tell me what to do iphone 4s bought preowned raised to 7.2 firmware but it requires aktivatsyi apple id but I do not know it because they do not buy a new one. and contact the seller lost in what to do now tell me?

There is no way around the activation lock. You apparently decided to use the phone with someone else's ID set up for an iCloud (and find my iPhone) account before updating. Since Find My iPhone was active, updating to iOS 7 has automatically turned on the activation lock. If you do not have the Apple ID and password that were previously used, then the phone is now useless. You can't activate it without that informaion.
Talk to whoever you bought the phone from if you can. If you can't, buy a new phone.

  • Lost a 2 hard drives, have 7 k photos on a touch that I need to load on IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it.  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!

Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

  • Does Adobe Reader for iOS have the ability to open inbedded links to additional PDF docs?  If not, then what would be the best way to use these already created PDF's?

Does Adobe Reader for iOS have the ability to open inbedded links created with Acrobat Standard to additional PDF docs?  If not, then what would be the best way to use these already created PDF's on an I Pad?

    driddy61,
As of June 2014, none of the Adobe Reader mobile products support the hyperlink action for opening a separate PDF document.
    Adobe Reader for iOS
    Adobe Reader for Android
Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8
In addition, the Reader mobile products do not open multiple windows/documents simultaneously, which would make the navigation between PDF documents nearly impossible. (Once a hyperlink takes you to a different PDF document, you have no way to go back to the original PDF document.)
The only Adobe Reader product that fulfills your department's requirements is Adobe Reader XI (mostly for Windows/Mac desktop/laptop computers).  Acrobat Pro and Standard are paid products.
Because you are in search of a less expensive device for your department, you could get a Windows tablet instead of a Windows desktop/laptop computer. Microsoft Surface Pro (that you've mentioned in your previous reply) is just one example.  You can also find other less expensive Windows tablets.
    Tablets
However, please keep in mind that there are two different types of Windows tablets running two different operating systems.
    (a) A Windows tablet with an Intel-based processor running Windows 8.1 Pro
    Example: Surface Pro 3
You can install and run traditional desktop apps (e.g. Adobe Reader XI) and new Windows Store apps ("Modern" or "Metro-style" apps).
    (b) A Windows tablet with an ARM-based processor running Windows RT 8.1
    Example: Surface 2
You can only install and run Windows Store apps (e.g. Adobe Reader Touch) but not traditional desktop apps like Adobe Reader XI.
In general, type (b) tablets are more affordable than type (a) tablets.  However, if you want to run Adobe Reader XI, you do need to check the technical specification of each tablet and make sure the following conditions are met.
    Processor: Intel
Operating system:  Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 8/8.1 Pro, not RT
Hope this helps you choose the right device for your department.  Please let us know if you have any questions about system requirements or supported features in the Adobe Reader products.

  • Bought the new MBP today, but don't know what to do now! Imperfect machine

Ok. I ran down to my campus computer store today and bought a base model MacBook Pro. Then, I returned home with lots of excitement. But after I opened up the laptop, all my excitement disappear shortly after I found 3 imperfections on the new MBP.
1.there is a dent on the edge of the front end (see pictures please). I'm so so disappointed and continued setting up the machine.
2.After all the noisy installation from an external hard drive. I realized that the fan is making a unpleasant noise which can only be heard in a quite environment. (I assume they have no way to hear it in store)
3.The speakers' wholes look very strange and looks like it's been used and covered with dust. -see in pictures
So I'm wondering what are my options. Is it possible to get a exchange or refund at the store or through Apple support?
Please help... I'm so screwed and don't know what to do now....
    see pictures here:

    Thanks for any input

Hmmm, someone's "right" to be upset - and - the content over which they are upset, are two different things. I never questioned the Op's right to be upset - he/she can be as upset as they want to be, that is their right.
I'm just saying that my perspective of aesthetic complaints around here has shifted - and they no longer cause me to call into question Apple's quality standards. I can understand wanting something to be perfect - but implicit in the complaint was the statement that Apple committed some harsh violation, which now I think they did not.
So again, I was reading the board and getting quite upset (internally) with Apple - because I love them as a company and I want them to do well - because it's not often that you get "truly" innovative corporate entities in this world - most corporations just want to "homogenize" existence - distilling it down to a few basic variations which are easy to reproduce; all for the sake of the bottom line. The fact that Apple is forcing innovation into the market - causes a corporate strata that doesn't tolerate vanilla design ethics - and I think that is a good thing.
I don't want to live in a neighborhood where the only choices I have for food are, McDonalds, Starbucks, Olive Garden, etc. anymore than I want to use the same old square black laptop with Windows on it.
So now I see that there are imperfections in the manufacturing - but they aren't indicative of serious neglect on Apple's part, which is why said "whew..."

  • RAW files are often unnecessary, but then, you never know.

I've decided to use both Raw and SQH (Olympus jpeg) when I take a shot because RAW files are often unnecessary, but then, you never know. Anyway, Aperture imports both versions as one would expect, and I can switch between versions by using a right click pull down and select either the JPEG or the RAW as original but my problem is that I can't see both at once, anywhere. I can't remove only one and it appears that if I trash either one they will both be gone.
What settings am I missing to import both version of the file as separate and visible and selectable images?

Read this page in the User Manual:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=4%26sec tion=6%26tasks=true
To import the RAW and JPEG image files as separate masters: Choose “Both (Separate Masters).”
Note that you can import just JPGs, and then later go back and get the RAWs (assuming you save them).
My advice is to switch to RAW only (unless you work on stringent deadlines).

  • If it wasn't a virus, then what was it?

A couple days ago I posted my first message asking for help solving what seemed like a virus problem to me. I was pleased with the responses and finally fixed the problem.
Apparently it was not a virus as several of you pointed out, but if so then what was it? Since getting my administrative powers back, I've been fiddling with the operating system to see if I could have accidentally reduced the permissions as administrator, but can find no way to do that through the finder.
When you open Accounts in System Preferences, you can there set limitations for all but the administrator.
I'm sure this can be done with the right UNIX code, but I am a UNIX neophyte and would appreciate someone replying with just such UNIX code, which I assume if it was a "virus" or other form of "malware", would be the code they'd use.
Could anyone just messing around experimenting with UNIX have accidentally entered the wrong character to cause this? I seriously doubt anyone here was doing this (I know I wasn't) though my son had access to my Mac for a few days while I was gone. I actually thought he might have done something to play a joke on me as I used to "crow" about being the "almighty administrator", but he tells me no, all he did was download BitTorrent … which, after a quick Google search, I found was notorious for spreading viruses.
And I believe him (my son) since I know he's not a hacker and doubt seriously that he could have done this. He's shown no interesting in programming of any kind to date so that would be a stretch. But that's why I ask above if someone could accidentally enter the code, not really knowing what they were doing.
At this point I believe that if it wasn't malware of some sort, or something my son could have unwittingly entered, then about all that's left that I can think of is cosmic rays. Yeah. Really. I've heard they can sometimes cause a bit to flip. Is this a possibility? Could the flipping of single bit have caused me to lose my administrator level of permissions. (I was essentially reduced to the lowest level of permissions until the problem was solved yesterday with only a Simple Finder and with over half the icons in the System Preferences panel grayed out, including the Accounts pane).
The "solution" that seemed to have worked was simply starting in Safe Mode.
    Any ideas?

I am still hoping someone can give me the UNIX code that might have been used to cause the problem.
I'm no UNIX guru, but I do know that you can do a LOT of damage from the command line. You can do anything from the Terminal (or booting directly to a command line interface) you want as long as you have an administrator's password. Including deleting every single file and folder from the drive, while your booted to it!
Also, would anti-virus software be of any help in finding any remaining malware that might still be on my Mac?
There's Norton Anti Virus for Mac, along with a few other commercial products. A good one that's free is ClamX. For the most part, all anti virus for Mac is used to find Windows malware attached to emails and other ways of transporting them. There's no known viruses that work in OS X at this point. But there are a few Trojan horse programs and a couple of spyware apps. All of which need you to run them and blithely enter your password in order for them to work. So unless you're being unusually careless, it's hard to get infected with anything that actually works in OS X yet.
