IMac (July 2011) to external monitor (VGA)

I have a new iMac (July 2011) and I need to hook it up to an external monitor that has a VGA output. Is this possible? If so, what adapter do I need?
On the back of my iMac I see 1 thunderbolt port, 1 firewire port, 1 ethernet port, 4 usb ports, and audio lines in and out. On the side are the slots for CD/DVD and SDXC cards. The tech specs page on the Apple webpage claim there is "Mini DisplayPort output with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately)", but I don't see a DisplayPort. Unless one of the other ports is meant to serve that purpose. In that case which adapter would I need to make this work?

Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

IMAC 27 inch as external monitor for PC issue

I'm not able to use the iMAC 27 inch as external monitor with my PC which has ATI 5870 graphic card. I use DP (displayport)-> miniDP cable. Any help?

It appears that none of the ATI HD 5XXX series cards are compatible with the iMac unless they have a mini displayport connector (ie eyefinity models and the $700 HD 5970). The ATI HD 4xxx models with the full size display port do seem to work also. I am curious as to whether this incompatibility carried over into the new iMac models....

Can I use my iMac 2009 as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro

I will soon be getting a new MacBook Pro with Retina display. It has an HDMI port.
My current iMac 21.5" late 2009 model seems to have a port with what looks like a little monitor symbol, next to the firewire port. And the specs say:
Graphics and video support
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Built-in iSight camera
Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI (adapters sold separately).
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display
Does this mean that port is just for video output to an external monitor? Or is is possible to also do video in?
On the one hand it feels like a waste to use a perfectly good iMac as a monitor. But the MacBook Pro actually has better specs, and so I was wondering if it is possible anyway.

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.

Mini DVI to external monitor (VGA) problem/firmware update does nothing

Hi,
Four months ago I bought a new white 13-inch Macbook (2006 model I believe) along with a handy mini-DVI - VGA adapter. I used a Hanns-G HU196D external monitor which worked fine for a couple of months but then stopped, and had the same problem with a (much cheaper) 'LiteView' monitor. I find it bizarre how they work absolutely fine and then stop, with no damage to the adapter, cable or ports. I've since bought a new adapter and cables + trying out a different monitor and still the same problem...
I've installed a firmware update that describes the exact symptoms, but it's done nothing. Can anyone help me resolve my issue?? It's still under warranty so is it an unusual problem that'll need to be fixed by Apple?

Are you using the mini DVI to DVI followed by a DVI to VGA adapter? That may not work if the mini DVI to DVI adapter does not pass analog video. If that is the case, you need the mini DVI to VGA adapter:

IMac does not recognize external monitor using Mini Display Port to HDMI

Hello,
I have been trying to get an external monitor (HDTV) set up for use with my iMac using a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable I just got. However, when I connect it to my iMac's mini display port, the imac's screen goes black for about a second, then returns, but it does not detect the external display. The other display is just showing a "no signal" message on the screen.
I have restarted, reset PRAM, connected and disconnected the cable several times, tried changing the resolution on the imac, plugged in/out the other display, and clicked the "detect displays" button using the option key in display preferences, but nothing has worked.
I am using an early 2009 iMac running Mavericks.
I've been using the AirParrot app, but it's horrible for video and a little slow.
Can anyone please help sort the issue here? I feel like ive exhausted everything that I know to do.

I've seen this post at least a hundred times. Has
anyone actually had the gusto to try this idea?
I don't remember where the page was. But, I posted it's link several months ago in the forums during another discussion.
But, the guy who had done it to his iMac G3 had very poorly documented his conversion.
Basically, he took and wired signal to same signal on the monitor, and adapted his power supply and other items to work properly in the modified setup.
So, it is possible. You just need to sit down with the schematics and wire signal to same signal, and make sure you account for all the variables. It may take some resistors, etc. to get the adaptation just right.
I don't have any reason to do it myself, so I'm not going to tinker with it.
If I remembered the link, I'd post it. But, it wouldn't do much good anyway since his HTML formatting was severely messed-up. The end-result was accurate information that was scrambled around on the screen in such a way that you couldn't decipher it anyway. If he had done the HTML work properly, it would be in a formatted table. But, instead the information was scattered all over the screen in an illogical format. So, it wasn't of much real use.

27 inch iMac (April 2011) - Two external displays - how?

I've just got a new 27" iMac and have connected two external displays via the mini display port. I can only get one to work, what am I doing wrong?

Sorry that was a dumb typo on my behalf. Here is the setup:
Apple 27inch iMac only bought today, so it's the newest version with the two Thunderbolt ports.
Two seperate external monitors each connected to a seperate port via a DVI cable and Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
So that's:
iMac x 1.
Thunderbolt port x 2.
External Monitor x 2.
Mini DisplayPort Adapter x 2.
3 displays in total. But when I turn on both displays only one will show up.

I have external keyboard and mouse but need to know how to and what to buy in order to achieve this.....havent found anything straight forward on apple site, like a vga dual monitor splitter, so am in need of some advice on how to do this please!

Thanks for the reply. Haven't gotten anything as yet. Just that I burned out my older PowerBook using it as a primary screen w/ a secondary 20" monitor. Would be nice if the MacBooks could be used as a CPU only, connect 2 different monitors, and use the LCD screen when portability is needed. But I suppose that is why Apple makes different types of computers. I know I can rig the video SCSI cable to bypass to LCD screen and use the other built-in monitor. But there goes the warentee and any kind of AppleCare... not that I have ever used it, (until a day after it has expired!)

Being that I am a mercenary graphic designer and need to be able to work whenever, and where-ever I need to, the MacPro is not my hardware of choice. As well, I don't have $4000 in my budget. But man do those machines rock! Just think of what NASA could have done with one of those in 1969 when we were going to the moon! But now that the U.S. has decided that manned space travel and even scientific space exploration is not worthy of having a budget, the MacPros are religated to creating new episodes of Jersey Shores!

IMac Boot to an External Monitor Instead of Main Screen

I have an external monitor connected to my iMac. I am currently mirroring my desktop. However, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to have the iMac use the external lcd monitor as the primary display? Also, is there a way to tell the iMac to boot to the external and dim the original display?

Just to elaborate on the post above, click open display preferences, select arrangement tab, now in the pane that shows the 2 displays, you will see the actual (white) title bar in one of the displays, simply drag this over to the other display that you want to use as the main monitor. Now you will have the option of using what resolution you want to use, what screensaver and wallpaper you want for each display! Good luck!

To use an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) or iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

Late 2009 imac with dead LCD; external monitor?

Hello, all
I need some help. The LCD on my late 2009 iMac has failed. I took it into the Apple Store and they told me it was dead and it would be $500+ to replace it, which I do not have.
The machine is intact, however, other than that! The Apple Store rep even told me that they tried it with an external monitor, to validate that the video card is working, and it worked fine. Great news!
My question, however, is how do I get it to boot to an external monitor?
I have booted the mac in target disk mode, booted from that target disk on another mac, and changed the settings so that the display is mirrored onto a second monitor. When I boot into the iMac, however, I get the Apple Logo and the "white screen of death" and the machine never finishes loading using the external monitor. I need to know if there is some way to force it to use that monitor for the primary display.

I'm wondering if boting from it's drive on the oother Mac didn't write some of the other Mac's Monitor info to it?
Instead of Mirroring, what if you make the external monitor the main one by dragging the Dock to it?

Imac doesn't recognize external monitor but was working

i had my HP monitor (HP 2011x) connected to my imac for about three months and when i went to move my monitors and imac to clean my desk, my imac no longer recognizes the monitor. all i did was shift the monitors to the left w/out unplugging any cables.
i've seen multiple threads about the same issue where the external monitor is no longer recognized and the majority of no solutions.
has anyone come up with a solution to this?
i restarted in safe mode to try and connect - no joy
i cleared the pram - no joy
any ideas?

thanks man ... i might just do that. it is just aggravating b/c this problem seems to have been around for a long time (based on all the support forums threads started about it).
i went to the apple store this afternoon and verified my thunderbolt to hdmi was working and sure enough it was. i talked to two staff members there and they were equally as clueless why the external monitor is not being recognized via the cable.

MacBook Pro 2011 Dual External Monitors/Displays.

Is it possible to connect and run two external monitors (non-Apple - with DVI input) from a MacBook Pro 15 or 17". (ie, close the lid on the MBP and have two monitors running). Do you need extra hardware?

needs, as of this date, a thunderbolt display, as you will not be able to daisy chain anything other then thunderbolt displays. So you would get a thunderbolt display and then can use that to connect a second display to it with a dongle of your choice.
But it will work, and is natively supported.
There are alternatives to this like DisplayLink which is used to make a usb hardware be able to connect DVI to usb and usb to your computer.
but they've been having some issues with Lion however it's only with earlier MBP models so you might be good. This would be a cheaper solution.
Google usb to dvi I have the Arkview adapter but they're all the same because they use the same drivers. Again, your best bet is a thunderbolt display or waiting for someone to make an adapter that lets you connect multiple display with minidisplay port/thunderbolt.

My imac will not detect external monitor after recent update. Is there a way to fix this?

I have a VGA monitor plugged in to my imac using the VGA adapter to the mini-DVI. All was working well. Since I updated over the weekend, the computer will not detect the monitor.
Any ideas how to fix this?

I didn't think about the adaptor, but you should at least visually inspect both the adaptor and the cable at both ends. If one or more pins got bent even slightly the connection might fail. The cables can also fail internally. Replacing the adaptor and cable may be the quickest thing to do initially. If you want to try to save money, first replace the adaptor, and if the problem persists, then go replace the cable (or vice versa).
