IPod on my computer

First of all im using vista os & not using mac os
is it at all possible, for the itouch to show up in 'my computer' & act as a normal storage device (i.e. drag & drop files into the device folder & it comes up on the device itself).
i asked this previously & got answers such as impossible
However the last time i plugged my ipod in, a rectangular window appeared (titled AutoPlay) with options about what i should do e.g. import pictures/ view pictures etc. This window only comes up when a peripheral storage device has been plugged in. I even checked on my computer & it was there. The problem was when i checked its contents- i only saw an image of a game that is installed on my ipod (the crash bandicoot game).
i unplugged & plugged it in again but the window did not appear this time

Hi,
The Touch cannot be used as a "removable disk" in the normal sense but because of it's ability to take "screen shots" it can appear as a camera/imaging device and allow the transfer of certain image files.
Normal "drag and drop" abilities are not available.

This is a very common problem for those of us who belived that iPods were easy to connect to computers. The first iPod was, so why can't I just connect another?
Well...you can. It just takes HOURS. Last night, I spent over 4 hours trying to get my windows computer to recognize both my mini and my sister's nano. Apple claims that using two iPods on one computer is "easy." It is, you just have to go through the grueling process of connecting them both first!
Maybe there is a faster way than I know about, but I have probably read EVERY POST about "How to connect 2 iPods to the same computer." I even called Apple and they GAVE UP on me! They told me it was a hardware problem and I should send my iPod in for repair.
What Apple needs to realize, is the fact that most people are NOT trying to steal music. All of the crazy restrictions that Apple has placed on iTunes (1 download per song, can't burn videos to dvd, can't play other music software on iPods...) are just to make sure no one steals $0.99 from Apple? WHAT?!?
My suggestion to Apple is that you make a new version of iTunes where a user can register MANY iPods to a single computer, and let them all be on at the same time. The way Apple has it now, only one iPod can be connected at a time. This is, of course, to insure that no one steals music.
The easy solution is to throuw out your Windows computer and buy a Mac. Or just one iPod.
I hope that this clears up any confusion you were having about your own iPods. I'm sorry if you aren't technically savvy and won't be able to figure out how to connect your two iPods, it literally took me hours.

Just blow itunes out and use RealPlayer. Just as easy to load from CD type playlists but not sure about downloads from web - yet. Had to do this as Itunes took out my CD and DVD drives in one go and couldnt have both. Cost me a fortune to get pc unstuck and windows completely re installed and guess what? Went to load Itunes again and there went the drives. Gave up and using RealPlayer now.

Multiple iPods on one computer question

I know this question has been asked already and I've read all the help topics about multiple iPods.
I've tried twice to use two iPods on one computer and it was not as easy as described. I'm just wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
The first time I tried was on a PC running XP with two iPod minis. I had seperate user accounts and it kept erasing all the songs in one account.
The other situation was on a different PC running XP Pro with a shuffle and a 30gig photo.
I had my 30gig for about a year and as soon as I plugged in my shuffle it didn't recognize it and the next time I plugged in my 30 gig photo it froze and I had to end up doing the hard reset for it.
Tomorrow I am about to try a PC running XP with a shuffle, nano, and a video iPod.
I've read the two ways to do it and am going to try the specific playlist option.
I'm worried that as soon as I plug in the second iPod it will freeze and I won't be able to even get to the "iPod Option" Button in iTunes.
The computer is not mine nor are the music devices. I'm doing it for a friend who doesn't understand computers that well. All devices are new, never used.
Is it as easy as the process sounds?
Also the last time I tried multiple iPods was at least two iTunes updates ago.

Let me explain this in detail for you:
The Do Not Disconnect screen
It is normal for your iPod to say this message to you when you connect it to your computer.
When you need to disconnect it from your computer, you'll first need to eject it.
There are a few ways to eject your iPod; through iTunes, the Safely Remove Hardware program, and "My Computer".
Through iTunes
Ejecting your iPod via iTunes depends on what setting your iPod is on for.
Connect your iPod. Go into Edit> preferences> iPod. See what setting your iPod is on; "automatic" or "manual".
Automatic
If you aren't restoring, or updating your iPod, iTunes should automatically eject your iPod from iTunes. If it doesn't, then right-click the name of your iPod in iTunes, and make sure that the "enable for disk use" is un-checked.
Manual
If you need to eject your iPod from iTunes if the setting is "manual", click the little arrow that's next to the name of your iPod in the left source list in iTunes.
Through the "Safely Remove Hardware" program
Look at the bottom-right corner of your screen, and there's the system tray icons there. If the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is there, click on it, select your iPod, and click "stop".
Through "My Computer"
Go to "My Computer".
Find your iPod's listing there (it's typically "E:" or "F:").
Right-click it, click on "eject".

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually
If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. i will soon have two different ipods syncing to the same computer. how can i keep libraries separate so that my brother's music doesn't show up on my ipod and my music doesn't get synced to his?

There are basically two methods for managing multiple iPods on one computer. See here:
Method 1 - Create different Windows users accounts for each iPod on this computer.
Method 2 - Create a playlist in iTunes for each iPod.
To make Method 2 work, connect one of your iPods, and click on it in the left-source panel.
Under the "Music" tab, and set your option for a specific playlist(s) under the "Sync Music" option.
Do the same with your other iPod; not connected at the same time as the other one, though.

I need to put photos from my iPod to my computer

My daughter's iPod touch has this very large block of "other" taking up more than 2gb of space of her device. I've exhausted all options and now we can't seem to get it to sync to wifi properly anymore. I want to do a complete reset on her iPod. Restore completely to factory settings. Erase it all. HOWEVER, we have some very special pictures on it of family members that are no longer with us, and I need to get them OFF the iPod before I can just delete everything. I can't figure out how. I've synced it. I've tried to search for it. I just cannot find the pictures anywhere on my computer. And I cannot figure out how to even view them. I even ran a back up from the iPod to my computer and I can't even find the file that happens to. And my cloud doesn't show the pictures either.

Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?

Old hard drive damaged; how to upload from iPod to new computer

The hard drive on my old computer was damaged. I had not backed up all of my iTunes library to either a DVD or external drive. My iPod classic has about 6,300 songs. I just purchased a new computer. Is it possible to upload all of the songs on my iPod to the new iTunes library on the new computer? I assume I will get a message telling me that the computer is not authorized. I am not all that tech savvy, so I don't want to hit "sync" and lose all my non-Apple purchased music. Thanks.

Hey there again, here's another answer.
Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library.There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

that is odd! that should not be happening.
Are you syncing your songs right off of itunes itself? because it should be syncing over to the ipod however it is listed in itunes.

How does the computer know which IPOD to account goes with which IPOD. It did not ask us for any additional info.

The iPod nor the computer keeps track of which iPod goes to which account. However, once you have synced the iPod with the different library, you will be prompted with a message that begins with, "This iPod is linked to a different library do you want to sync it now..."
Did you copy the iTunes folder for both accounts.

Try transfering the move to your computer:

If it transfers, see if it plays on the computer.
Try resetting your iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
