.motn file crashing FCP

I created a Motion project and imported it into FCP 6.0.6 placed it on the timeline and began to render it. I have tried this a few times and all I get is spinning beachball so I have to force quit everytime.
The sequence settings are the same. The .motn project does have quite a lot of information and does need a big render even when RAM previewing in Motion.

Save the project file for Motion.
Export the project file with settings consistent with your FCP sequence settings.
import.
Then you don't have these issues and don't to need to render each time things change in FCP.

  • Not able to import .motn files into FCP

For some reason I'm not able to import .motn files into FCP. While in FCP, I use "send to motion" and uncheck the embed box. After motion opens and I add my motion content, I get the following error when trying to import the .motn file back into FCP "File Error: 1 files(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown". What is strange is that I'm able to create another test FCP project with different media, and everything works fine. All tests and media are done on the same drive.
I'm using the latest updates of everything FCP 5.0.4 and motion 2.0.1
    Any ideas anybody?
    Thanks!

  • File Crashing FCP - Can import from different tape brand be at fault?

I always use Sony Premium mini DV tapes and import my video through my Sony DSR-11 miniDV deck into FCP.
I was recently handed a Fujifilm miniDV tape. The video imported fine. But once I dragged it to the timeline, rendering any transitions or filters caused big gray boxes to appear on the video. Sound also fell. I was able to make it work - but the exported file retained the boxes at different places each time I exported.
Now the file doesn't open at all and it crashes FCP. All other files on my system still open and export fine except for this one.
My question is 1. whether the change of tape brand can cause the import to go haywire.
and 2. Is there any way I can open this file? I trashed preferences and restarted with no luck.
Any suggestions ar emuch appreciated. Thanks!
    Dual 1.8 GHz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 4 GB DDR SDRAM

I've never had the same experience, so this is purely speculation.
Changing brands used in the same camcorder has been reported as the cause of recording & playback problems. But, since the playback from the DSR was okay, I'm guessing the brand isn't the problem.
Could be the camcorder settings don't match your FCP settings?
What if you copied the Fuji tape to Sony tape in your camcorder. That way you would have control of both the tape and the camcorder settings.

  • AVCHD files crashing FCP using Perian

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone can help with a rather hard to pin down issue.
AVCHD files on a SD card recorded on a Panasonic broadcast camera have started crashing FCP on random file transfers (log and transfer window), say I have 30 clips to transfer, it'll freeze then crash the system on clip 22 but the other clips will be fine.
I have had a look at the report window and it says' Perian has unexpectedly quit' (why the **** are apple using third party software to do the job) and the log is just code to me.
I first suspected the camera an AG HMC151 (150) because I have two so it was easy to just test the other one, but it does it on both.
Then I suspected the cards, it does it on all of them.
So I can only assume it's the macs, of which I have two, both have 10.6.6 and I'm running FCP 6.0.6. they are both about a year old.
Because this is a random problem it's actually rather stressful as this is my living.
If anyone has any good ideas or has experienced this please let me know, I think I have mentioned everything I know and apologise if I have left out some piece of vital info.
    Thanks

I've been having the same issue with importing AVCHCD footage from my Sony NXCAM. Through some major digging, I discovered someone else in another forum recommend the program Clip Wrap 2 (which I see someone also recommended above). I downloaded it just now and it works GREAT for creating useable clips. Highlight recommend.

  • Cinematize 2 files crashing FCP

I recently purchased Cinematize 2.06. The self-contained QT files of about 10 minutes play perfectly in QT 7.4.1 but crash (with or without the spinning beach ball) my computer when I edit in FCP 5.1.4. I've used Cinematize's recommended settings for FCP export and tried uncompressed, DVcPro and DVCpro50, same results. The crashes are so bad that I have to power off since com/option/esc doesn't work. I've re-installed OS 10.4.11 and FCP 5.1.4, same results. I've used FCP and this computer for years with no freezes but all my editing has been from captured footage from the cam. I've got 4GB ram and no other programs are running. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Henrik

  • *** Trying to re-connect files crashes FCP

I have a FCP project that my editor has given me on an external HD with all the music on it. The songs need to be re-connected (showing up in the project in white) but when I either try to re-connect them on the timeline or in the browser, FCP crashes. I can't seem to find anyway to re-connect these tracks without FCP crashing. Has anyone had this problem and how did you solve it?
    Thanks in advance!

Give us exact specs of the audio files and where they originated.

Good idea.  Once they are imported to either FCP 7 or FCP 10, they are not editable anyway, so what's the difference. Thanks for that.
I am unable to import IMovie projects in editable form as well.  That would be the file extension .rcproject.
    Have you experienced this?

  • Compressord crashes when converting .motn files

    Hi All -
SO I frequently pass Compressor render jobs via the command line to convert .motn files (Motion) to Animation Codec. There are about 10 templates, all very simple, the only thing that ever changes is the text.
This will work many times in a row, with all the templates, until compressord crashes even once, then it will crash again and again until the machine is restarted.
Anybody else seeing anything like this, or crashlogs like this one?

  • Motn file transparent in fcp but same clip exp to mov file is black in fcp

This is not a problem per se as I have a fix but my question relates to understanding the why?
I have a short 4 second clip I made in Motion that is simply white text in a semi-transparent box that comes down from the top into the frame and then fades away. The background of the motion project is set to transparent, render is set to high quality. If I place the .motn file in a track in my FPC project and it is placed so that it is the track in the foreground of the frame, I get the usual red bar asking for a render. Composite mode on this track is set to Normal. I do a render and all looks fine. My text box comes down and fades away. My video in the background blends through fine and life is good. If, however, I render in Motion using Export, settings set to Animation Codec (http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/motion_text_in_fcpspencer.html) and then replace the .motn file with the .mov file that was exported, my sequence is totally black from the overlay file. If, however, I then select this .mov in the track and set the Composite mode to Screen, it looks just like what my sequence looked like with the .motn file.
I know what is going on, but I don't know why. What is confusing is the .motn file is transparent in the foreground with Composite Mode set to normal but the .mov clip must be set to Screen to accomplish the same thing.
Inquiring minds would like to know why?

You need to make sure that
    1) Motion is actually exporting an alpha and that
    2) FCP is correctly interpreting that alpha
Just choosing the Animation codec when you export from Motion is not enough. You need to go to the Output tab Color is set to "Color + Alpha".
If you have done so and still don't get transparency (without changing the composite mode) in FCP, then select the project file, right-click and choose item properties, and check the alpha interpretation - if it says none, change it to premultiplied with black.

  • FCP interprets .ipr & .motn files (correctly) with Black alpha. Since when?

For the first time in a long time, I imported .ipr and .motn files into an FCP project on Monday and was shocked to see that Alpha was interpreted (correctly!) as Black. (They were interpreted as Straight for as long as you could import those files types directly into FCP, since version 4.5)
The question in all of this: does anyone know when this all changed?
I'm pretty sure this is a recent change but I've been schooled frequently on this forum (not a bad thing at all) so this might just be another case of me getting sloppy.
Edit: I am on all the most recent stuff - FCP 6.0.3, QT 7.4.5, OS 10.5.2, etc

So, I just ran across this little gem of the interaction between Livetype project files in a FCP timeline, QT 7.4.5 AND Aja Kona driver 5.1 NDD, all of which I have an operate. I've not removed my Kona card to see if that is my issue but perhaps I will tomorrow.

  • Using .motn and .mov files in FCP

I am starting to use Motion much more in FCP Projects and I was just wondering if I should using .motn files in my FCP timeline in most circumstances or is there a time when actually having the .mov file is better?  Other then render time is there much advatange or disadvantage from one to the other?

Better depends on the project and what you need.  I look at it this way:
    Use .motn
-If I think I will have many revisions to the effect.
    Use .mov
-When I have to send the result to some who doesn't have Final Cut
-When I'm sure things are not going to change.

  • .motn file stays black in fcp timeline.

.motn file stays black in fcp timeline when I saved it in motion it automatically makes the changes in the timeline. The only thing is, I can't see it , it's just black, the only thing i can hear is the audio. What am I doing wrong?

(edit: I discovered i can see it in my viewer when i doubleclick on the file in the browser, although it doesn't play smoothly)
Message was edited by: ward geerts

So it works i you need to click on modify and then set alpha to black. There's just one more thing that doesn't work well, when i set in view the render to best the imported movie file goes black, any idea how that happens?

  • Substandard renders and .motn projects that crash FCP.

On rendering out video from Motion (first version) I am warned that almost every object on my timeline is 'too large to render and will be cropped'. I'm working on anamorphic D1 projects and some of the objects it is telling me are too large are things like 720x576 video clips and even 16 pixel high caveats with no effects. I can get a render using the 'export' command in Motion but for some reason these are exceptionally jagged and have no sub-pixel supersampling (I've got anti-aliasing turned on but this doesn't help a great deal and the jagged edge are far too obvious to use for broadcast purposes). I'm rendering Uncompressed 4:2:2 and both project and render settings are upper-field first.
I have tried simply importing the .motn projects into FCP which for some reason manages to render objects much smoother than Motion's native renderer - but unfortunately all of the projects contain particle effects which seem to crash FCP every time it comes across them. Going back to Motion to render these sections is no good as it seems to render particle effects with random jumps and missing frames in them.
Any tips for getting decent quality smooth anti-aliased renders from Motion into Final Cut Pro as I'm not having any luck so far and I've got nine television commercials due for delivery Monday morning - yikes!
    Any suggestions most welcome!
    Cheers,
    Tom

Though I realize Motion 2 isn't available as a separate item anymore, it is absolutely worth getting as far as speed and performance.
I remember thinking that on the same hardware it felt like it was 2x as fast.
Definitely check out the linked Motion Smarts article - it's a great explanation or introduction to the specific problems you can have working with a GPU-based FX program like Motion. This stuff matters - if you can master optimizing your projects by design Motion will be a nice addition to your toolbox.
