Numbers-Auto Generating a numbered list in a column of cells

Having trouble creating an auto-generating numbered list in a single column. In text inspector I choose bullets>numbers>start at 1. The first cell is filled in with a "1", but when I hit return or down arrow the 1 disappears. If I go back and type a "1" again, two "1's" appear in the same cell. I'm trying to make a table with 250 rows. Not sure what I'm missing, as I'm new to iWork.

Numbers can fill a column or row of cells with a pattern. Type the first two numbers in the first two cells, select both cells, then click on the small circle at the lower right of the second cells & drag down to fill however many cells you want. You can see in this picture that it works for other patterns, not just consecutive numbers. I've also used it to fill across month names or dates.

    re Numbers...
    I have a single column, 10 cells long. I want to consecutive number the cells 1 thru 10. How do I do this?

    There are a couple different ways:
    1) in cell A1 type "1", in cell A2 type "2", A3 type "3", ... cell A10 type "10":
    2) A1: "1", A2: "2"
    this notation means in cell A1 enter the text between double quotes.  Then select cells A1 and A2, then grab (click and hold) on the little circle at the bottom right of the selection, and drag straight down to auto fill with increment
    3) enter the formula
    A1: "=row()"
    select A1 and and fill down as need
    There are other ways too

  • Regarding auto generating the numbers

    I have five tables
    vendor -> (vendor_no, vendor_name, address, city, state, zip, ph no)
    bid -> (bid_no, bid_desc, date_of_open)
    contact -> (contact_no, contact_name, email_addrs)
    vendor_contact -> (vendor_contact_no, contact_no, vendor_no)
    vendor_bid -> (vcbauto, vendor_conatct_no, bid_no,sets)
    of these five tables, vendor_no, conatct_no, vendor_conatct_no and vcbauto should be auto generated i.e. when the users enter any new info like take for example contact details (users will be asked only contact_name, email_addrs) contact_no should be auto generated once submit button is clicked, similarly for vendor details vendor_no should be auto-generated. Once we get any new contact_no or vendor_no, vendor_contact table should be updated automatically which in turn should update the vendor_bid table.
    can any one tell me how this can be done...

    Thanks for the quick reply gus.
    that's what i have right now GUS... When the end-user clicks on create for the FILLED text-boxes, then the number is created.
    but the client wants the number to appear on the CELL everytime, before they even fill in the rest of the cells...
    i wanted to know if there's a way to have that box with the auto-generated number already there even before they are ready to submit the filled info.
    i'll post a link to a snapshot next time if possible..

  • Auto-generate table or list from other data

    Hello,
    I'm trying to figure out how to get Numbers (if it can) to generate and display a list. I'm not sure how to explain it well, so let me just give you an example.
    I have a table that looks like this:
    A 0
    B 1
    C 0
    D 0
    E 1
    F 1
    Where A through F are strings, and the 0 and 1s are determined by a formula based on other data in the spreadsheet. The point of the second column is to indicate if the corresponding item in the first column is "available" and can be chosen by the user, 1 meaning yes, 0 meaning no. So, for the example, all the requirements for "E" are met, and it can be chosen by the user; not so for "A." There are about 200 rows of data, so I'd rather have a formula or function than do it all manually.
    I would like all the items (and only those items) in the first column that are available (as indicated by the second column) to be displayed in a table on a different sheet that the user is expected to interface with.
    Hence, ideally that table would look like this:
    B
    E
    F
    and not like this:
    (blank)
    B
    (blank)
    (blank)
    E
    F
    The goal is to then allow the user to select some or all of those available options (using check boxes in the next column). For what its worth, there's actually already a column before the string column that is a simple enumeration of rows; it's occurred to me that multiplying the "available" column by the enumeration will give a unique number for each available option and the same number, 0, for each unavailable option.
    I really appreciate any advice you could give me!
    Thanks!

    Tstedman,
    You have to remember that checkboxes are just a pretty way of stating TRUE or FALSE. There is no mechanism other than to click on them to change them. They are not controlled by formula.
    Knowing nothing about how you are using the checkbox in you tables, the following is offered as a possible workaround. In this scenario you may change the checkbox setting in table 1 and the change will be reflected in Table 2. But the down side is that the reverse will not work and that a check "mark",not a check "box", appears in Table 2. Column B of Table 2 contains the formula:
    =IF(ISBLANK(A2),"",IF(LOOKUP(ROW()-1,Table 1 :: C,Table 1 :: D),"√",""))
    If this works for you, Great! If not, others may come up with a different workaround. The checkbox can be useful in cases where formulas in other cells refer to it ... but, it cannot refer to other cells.

  • ADD Auto Generate column to table

    Hi All,
    I drag my table from dataview , what I want is add new column to it ? I have tried but i couldnt , and add script to that column so
    it come auto generate int numbers?
    thanks

    Hi,
    try to create a new table with the wizard, under the toolbar -> table -> insert table -> create table using assistant.
    Set the body layout, with fixed dimensions or depending or data.
    Then choose if you need a footer and a header.
    Divide the new table in sections if needed.
    Optionally, you even can add row shading to the table.
    Finally, you need to create the correspoding binding between the context and the new created table.
    I hope this solves your problem.

  • Auto generate employee/applicant number

    Hi All
    I want to auto generate the employee and applicant number as follows:
    ABCW0000001
    ABCS00000001
    Where first 3 characters i.e., ABC stands for the company name and fourth characters i.e., W stands for Workers and followed by the employee number.
    The category of employee i.e., Staff or Worker is captured in the People Group segment in assignments.
    I can write a fast formula to auto generate the employee numbers, but as employee number has to be generated first before updating the assignments.
    How to auto generate the numbers before updating the assignments?
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Regards
    Rahman

    Hi
    Do you have multiple assignments over there?There are no multiple assignments.
    If not, can you move the people group segment to the people screen?How can I move this to People Screen?
    What should be the empl number if the people group changes anyway?If the employee gets promoted, say from worker to staff, then a new number should be generated from the date of new assignment. Also the old number should not be used in future.
    Thanks for the help.

  • How to strip out leading numbers in auto-generated bookmarks?

    For years now my team has used an Acrobat plug-in called Compose, which lets us strip out the leading numbers from bookmarks in PDFs generated from FrameMaker 7.2. (The tool works after the fact, so that all bookmark creation occurs after the PDF is created.)
    For example, these document headings:
    1.1 Intro to Happy Fun Ball
    1.1.1. System Requirements
    1.1.2. Cautionary Information (WARNING)
    are translated to the bookmarks:
    Intro to Happy Fun Ball
    System Requirements
    Cautionary Information (WARNING)
    After evaluating the new Adobe Tech Comm Suite, it seems that Acrobat 9 Extended Pro isn't compatible with the Compose plug-in (or at least, the version we've been using for years).
    Does anyone know if there's a method -- built into either FrameMaker 8 or Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, or in an SDK -- that allows you to auto-generate bookmarks but strip out leading numbers? It seems this is a no-brainer of a feature, yet I can't find it listed anywhere in the Acrobat documentation.
    Other names for this feature might be "wild card" or "text masking," not to mention "strip leading numbers."
    Thanks very much for your help.

    The following code can be run from the JavaScript console, but since you're new to this, it might be easier to create a button, paste the code shown below into the Mouse Up event of the button, select the Hand tool and click the button to execute the code, and then delete the button if everything is OK.
    If you need to do this a lot, you should consider setting up a custom menu item or toolbar button that executes this code:
    function removeBookmarkPrefix(bookmark) {
        // Resursive function to remove bookmark prefix
        // Rename bookmark without prefix
        bookmark.name = bookmark.name.replace(/^\S+\s+/, "");
        if (bookmark.children != null) {
            for (var i = 0; i < bookmark.children.length; i++) {
                removeBookmarkPrefix(bookmark.children[i]);
    // Remove all bookmark prefixes, recursively
    removeBookmarkPrefix(bookmarkRoot);
    The code uses what's called a regular expression, which in this case is fairly simple: /^\S+\s+/
    This regular expression means to search the bookmark name for the beginning of the string (^), followed by one or more non-whitespace characters (\S+), followed by one or more white space characters (\s+), and replace all that with an empty string (""), thus removing it. This should work with the bookmark name prefixes you describe.
    The function is called recursively, which is an efficient way to handle the hierarchical structure that the bookmark tree can have.
    If you get stuck, post again.

  • How do I generate random numbers from a list of numbers without repeating any number

    I am trying to generate a list of random numbers without any repeating numbers.  For example say the list is from 1 to 15, how do I randomly generate a list of numbers using each number only once?

    pb,
    You can build a randomizer by making a 2-column table with 15 rows. In Column A, Fill with the numbers 1 to 15. In column B Fill with RAND(). Then sort on Column B. There will now be a randomized list of the numbers from 1 to 15 in Column A. You can copy this random list and use it in your application.

  • Need An Algorithm That Generates Random Numbers

    Hi, I understand that there is a built-in random number generator. But, I need an algorithm that generator random numbers. Is there one available? Thanks.

    Hi, is the "Seminumerical Algorithms" a book?What
    the numbers 3141592621 and 907633385 stand for?The first is PI without a decimal... the second I
    don't know, it may as well be randomly picked.As far as I know the numbers aren't randomly picked. You want the distribution to be good, and the length of the serie should also be long. Some numbers causes the cycle to be short, or the distribution to be bad. I think there are articles that lists 'good' numbers.

    I've been using numbers for iPad and I accidentally deleted a column. And the auto-save feature saved that and now I can't undo it. Does iCloud storage have backups of saved files from like 10 minutes ago? I have numbers synced to iCloud.
    I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
    I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere.

    No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule.It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

  • How do i edit numbers in the recent call list?

    I'm using iOS 5.0.1 on the 4s currently
    Can anyone tell me how to edit the contact numbers in the recent call list? Eg. I would need to add a certain prefix in front of the number to return an overseas call in my recent call list. I tried to copy n paste the number after adding the prefix manually via keypad, but this method erases the prefix. Is there any other way to do this besides saving a different number in my contact list?

    As it happens, I use my "Recent Applications" menu as a list of "favourite" apps more than as a way to access recent apps. I won't go into too many details of "why", but I do have the "Finder" in there.
    I am using "Panther" so I don't know if this still works, but try opening "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering this command:<pre>defaults write com.apple.recentitems apps -array-add '/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app'</pre>It may be necessary to log out and back in again for the change to take effect, or the change at least may only be active in apps launched after modification of the file. There may also be issues related to the number of items in the list - it may be necessary to increase the "Number of recent Applications" through "System Preferences", or else clearing the list before entering the above command.
    I also keep my "com.apple.recentitems.plist" file "locked" - this prevents items from being dropped through non-use. Despite being "locked", the menu does update during a login session so I still get some "recent item" functionality from the menu. Everything does of course revert to the saved state for the next login, however.
    Regarding the "Dock", in "Panther", after "hiding" the "Dock", it is relatively easy to "pause" or restart it, repectively, using:<pre>killall -STOP Dock
    killall -CONT Dock</pre>Perhaps these commands could be incorporated into an "AppleScript" application and added to "Recent Applications". However, you will also lose the use of ⌘-Tab application switching, Exposé, widgets, and the ability to minimize windows while the "Dock" is paused. Alternatively, there are a number of preference settings that can be applied to the Dock's ".plist" file to minimize its obtrusiveness without affecting other "Dock.app" functions. However, it will be more difficult to toggle between the two states than simply pausing the whole app...

  • Auto updating in Numbers

    Can any one say if its possible to set "auto updating" in Numbers 09" ?
    I've recently imported a document from appleworks which had this facility but cannot find it in the new
    app.
    If it can be done -How?
    Alan

    Hi Alan,
    I don't recall having used this option in an AppleWorks spreadsheet document (or data base document).
    I know that AppleWorks supported inserting a fixed or auto-updating date into a word processing document or into a text frame in a spreadsheet, but that menu item was not available in the AW spreadsheet's Edit menu.
    You can insert the current date into any cell in a Numbers table using Edit > Insert Date and Time, or by pressing shift-option-command-D. Despite what the menu item implies, this inserts the current date, but with the time set to 0:00 (midnight). This is a Fixed date entry; trhe value will not change until you replace it.
    AppleWorks spreadsheets and Numbers tables both support the NOW() function, which returns the current date and time value. This will display the current date if the cell is formatted to show a date (AppleWorks) or to show Date and Time, with the Time format set to None, in Numbers. The values will update each time the table is recalculated (ie. every time a value is changed in any cell).
    And, as Jerry notes, auto-updating dates update as soon as the document is opened, without waiting for the user to check the previous value. You may find inserting a fixed date more useful.

    Barry

  • Sequence numbers not generated sequentially?

    Our situation: We have encountered an issue with our database, where it appears that a sequence has generated a number out of sequence, that is, to fill in a gap left previously. That is, in the affected table, we have records like:
    Seq No Date (DD/MM/YY)
    1 29/12/08
    2 29/12/08
    3 4/1/09
    4 29/12/08
    The code that actually updates the database is from a third party, so I am unable to prove the following, but the vendor assures me that:
    1. The sequence numbers are generated using "select message_number.nextval from dual".
    2. The Date column is not modified after the record is created. ( Nor is it supposed to be )
    The sequence is created by "CREATE SEQUENCE MESSAGE_NUMBER START WITH 10000000 INCREMENT BY 1 MINVALUE 10000000 CACHE 20 NOCYCLE NOORDER"
    This was detected only yesterday, after the event, and is very uncommon ( I have not found another instance, but there are over 7,000,000 records, so I haven't performed an exhaustive search). We are relying on the sequence numbers always being generated sequentially, as in each message_number.nextval is greater than the previous one.
    I don't think that the date change was due to a user accidentaly changing the date. Related records to '3' are also dated 4/1/09, there is no facility for a user to change the date outside of accessing the database directly, and even the developers do not have write access to this database.
    My questions:
    1. Is this normal behaviour for a sequence? To go back and fill in a gap like this? If so we'll have to change one of the assumptions of one of our modules.
    2. Should the sequence be defined with 'ORDER' rather than 'NOORDER' to stop this?
    3. Could this be a bug in the sequence number generation? We are using Oracle 9.2.0.1.0.
    4. Is this situation "impossible", and therefore there is a bug in the vendor library that we need to track down.
    Thanks for your help,
    Wayne.

    maybe some user prepared a new record. Then went to some new years eve party and when he came back at the begining of next year he commited the data (record send to database, database is adding date column by some trigger...).

  • How to generate unique numbers

    hi all,
    I want to generate unique numbers always starting from 1 using a single sql query and I dont want to use a sequence and i dont think rownum will be helpful for generating unique numbers in all cases . how to do this ?
    thanks & regards,
    kumar.

    If two users get the MAX from temp, they would be updating with the same value for two different rows.If TEMP is a genuine temporary table, this is not an issue, because the data in a temporary table is only visible within a session.
    The big problem with this approach is the mutating table one: we cannot issue the requisite select statement from a BEFORE INSERT trigger. So this solution is only going to work with a view and an INSTEAD OF INSERT trigger.
    Another, more workable, solution is to use a code control table. This can be (should be) another temporary table, with one row holding one column - next value for TEMP.ID. Normally we would rule out such a solution because it serializes access to the inserted table, but as this is only on a per session basis, it doesn't matter.
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER tmp_bir BEFORE INSERT ON temp1 FOR EACH ROW
    DECLARE
      ln NUMBER;
    BEGIN
      SELECT nvl(code1.next_id,1) INTO ln
      FROM code1;
      :NEW.id := ln;
      UPDATE code1
      SET    next_id := ln+1;
    END;Beware: coded freehand, so may need debugging.
    Cheers, APC
