Photo Books - turning off default cropping?

I am in the middle of putting a photo book together and I am using the "Picture Book" theme. So let's say that on one page I have selected to have ONE photo which is oriented vertically (potrait). It places the photo in the center of the page and fills the page top to bottom with the pic, and there is white space on the sides.
So WHY in the heck would it crop the top & bottom of my photo? And change it's proportions? Why not just use the original full frame and just have more white at the sides?
Is there any way to fix this or change a setting somewhere? So far I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks!

You are welcome - I'm not sure where that is documented - or if it is

  • Photo Stream turns off with restart

Ever since I turned on Photo Stream, I've had this problem where every time I restart my computer, Photo Stream turns off in iPhoto.  If I quit iPhoto and re-open it without restarting my computer, Photo Stream keeps running just fine.  I only have the issue when I actually shut my computer off.  I'm running iPhoto 9.3 and OSX 10.7.4.
I've been doing some research to try and find a solution, and I keep coming up with two tips.  The first is to go into Library-->Application Support and delete the iLifeAssetManagement folder.  The second is to to into Library-->Preferences and delete the files.  I've tried both, and so far neither has solved the problem.
Does anyone have any other suggestions about how I could fix this issue?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file,, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/ folder.
3 - launch iPhoto, reset the preferences including PhotoStream and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • HT201317 I can't get photostreaming to stop downloading even tho I deleted photos and turned off. It's using my data minutes and I'm over my usage because its always downloading mode

I can't get photostreaming to stop downloading even tho I deleted all photos and turned off. It is always in downloading mode. It's using my data minutes

    Okay, I figured it out.
I would clear the cache while the page was still being viewed in a window, and for some reason that didn't actually clear the cache. So that's the browser's being a good little browser, but it's annoying because it should clear everything.
iWeb also has a problem in that is tells pages to cache forever, so the browsers are only doing what they're told.
Close the window, clear the cache, good to go.

In Elements 13, how do I turn off default setting that sends my usage info to Adobe?
Vendors of proprietary software want to track everything you do.  Adobe says that it is possible to turn off sending info to them, but doesn't include any info on how to do it.

Go to the main page of and sign in if you aren't already signed in, then click Manage Account>Sign In again>Security & Privacy>Desktop App Usage Information.

  • IPhoto 9.3.1  Photo Stream Turns off

Why is Photo Stream always turned off when I close iPhoto? This forces me to turn it back on again...anyone have a clue?
    Thanks in advance!

I get the same but not every time I close and reopen iPhoto.  You could the following:
1 - make a backup copy of your library if you don't already have one.
2 - delete the iPhoto preference file,, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
3 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/ folder.
4 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • How to create photo book from Album without cropping

I just came from vocation and try to make a cool photo book out of my "best pictures" selection. Most images are "as is" from camera, so have "standard" aspect ratio: H/W.
I also happy about composition and would like to keep all or most of it.
I tried several "cool" templates, but can not get results I want: iPhoto randomly place my images on random template, but the painful issue is that it is also randomly crops my images to fit these random layout. It probably try to make it look "cool", but it does not make any sense and does not look cool.
I can do it all manually and select template for every page, also, changing mask for every image (for some minimum of mask still crops more then half of image, so page layout have to be changed). I have about 200 pictures I picked for album and I am not happy about doing it 200 times.
It may work for me if iPhoto just flow images without cropping for fit? Extra bonus would be if I can select images I want "big", "medium" or "small"
Can iPhoto automatically create a simple PhotoBook for printing without killing most images with random and some times more than 50% cropping?

Canon S90 - it is Advanced P&S. When I say crop I does not mean a little bit on sides I mean iPhoto 11 some times crop 50% of image, some times try to zoom on faces. At any rate, most images just rendered useless. Say you have normal landscape picture of person holding some thing in his hands. iPhoto made super wide strip out of it to fit in 1+2 kind of layout, so what you see is upper half with face, object in hands completely out and you can not change mask as at minimal settings it is still cuts more than half of image out.
I tried many Themes, but I can not find one that would not destroy my images, that are very typical, hobbits images, with margin usually big enough for small fit crop, but as it is my trip record I would like to keep (naturally, no?) all details in.
Zoom of face may be cool, but when the rest of image lost, what the point?
I can go one by one, but this is time consuming for 200 images. It just make sense to have "preserve image" settings or "simple" photo book template some where... but I can no find it: all settings in iPhoto are kept to minimum , Apple style

  • Can't turn off default alarm. Aggrivating!

I have my iCal set up to sync with Google Calendar because of my Droid. I have 6 calendars, and by default iCal adds new events to my Google "personal" calendar. This is fine.
What is not fine is that any time I create a new event I find myself stuck with a blasted Email Alert and Message Alert. I do not want them!
I've gone into preferences, I've checked the box next to "turn off all alarms"... if I create an event and I create it under, say my "Work" calendar, then the alerts don't show up - they don't exist. That's what I want! Just for some reason I cannot set up my stupid default "Personal" calendar to create an event without setting up alerts.

Ok, this can be ignored now. When I made my post I found a similar topic and it linked me here: 5
It wasn't an iCal issue at all, it was Google. All fixed! No more blasted alerts that I don't want/need!

  • After editing a photo and turning off edit the photo changes

So I am doing some extreme editing of some of my photos to get drastic, surrealistic effects....when I get it where i like it and turn off edit, the photo is ok for a moment and then changes to something completely different.....  any way to make the effects I see when in edit mode stay once edit mode is clicked off...

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

How about more info so a diagnosis and help can be formulated? Mac model (size), RAM, OS version, age, battery status? What are you doing when it happens? How often? And if you want to be really abundant, pertinent logfiles?

  • Color tone of photo book is off

I recently ordered a photo book from iPhoto and the flesh tones are way off. Everyone looks very pink compared to what I see on my screen, and I don't have any weird color calibrations set up or anything like that. I've already filed a complaint with Apple, but does anyone know what the cause of this might be? Just a bad book, or is this par for the course?

I too just recently received my 100 page book from iPhoto which also had some colour quality issues. I know that the true colour quality is magnificent, as these images have been printed before, both at home on an Epson Stylus Photo R300 6 colour ink system, and in photo labs for larger prints. They are also vivid and vibrant on my computer in iPhoto. When I complained to Apple, I learned from Apple that they are using a 4 colour ink system for their prints. My opinion is that this cannot accurately reproduce the true colours in an image, especially skin tones.
From my experience, 4 colour ink combinations were outdated long ago, and most printers now use at least 6 colours. I remember when I used a 4 colour printer, and flesh tones IN PARTICULAR were never accurate! Since upgrading my own printers, that problem is gone. I have advised Apple of my concern with the colour in their prints, in a feedback to iPhoto. I recommend that you do the same, as the more of us who bring this issue to light may eventually result in better overall prints.

Hope this helps. We all want the best possible prints in our books, especially when they are beautiful images to begin with.

  • Address book -- turn off phonetic sorting?

In order to make better use of the iPhone 3GS voice control dialing feature, I have add phonetic representations for some of my contacts. However, when I do this I noticed that the address app sorts these contacts by their phonetic spelling. (For instance the name 'Zhou' is pronounced 'Jo', and is sorted under the letter J).
This seems kind of weird default behavior and should at least be configurable. Anyone know some way to do this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I know that this is of little consolation to you, but the Tiger version of Address Book no longer has that annoying interface.
I know of no way to turn it off in Panther.

  • Mac Book turning off at will

Hey I have a problem . My Mac (It doesn't have a year yet) is acting really strange recently . I installed Windows XP on it and it was working fine until February - it turned itself off when I was using Windows , after working for only 3 hours . Since then it turns itself off randomly before I reach the log on screen or when it's on for a long time (on Windows) . I thought that it's something wrong with XP , but it did that a few times while on Mac OS X too . Can anyone help me ? (sorry if I made any mistakes , but my english isn't perfect) Thanks in advance for any help

  • IPhone loses photos when turned off

Every time I turn my iphone off, I lose all the photos I've taken. Is there a setting I can change to fix this?

Photos taken with the camera on the iPhone should not delete themselves when you turn the phone off. This is not normal. If this happened to you with a new phone, it leads me to believe there is something in the software backup that you did when you set up the new phone. I would first try a reset, holding the home and power button together until you see the Apple logo and then releasing, ignoring the slide to power off screen. See if that changes it. If you take a picture and then turn the phone off and the picture is deleted, then you need to try and do a restore. I would recommend a restore as a new phone. Do not install anything on the phone after that and try to take a picture, turn the phone off then on and see if the picture is deleted. If it is, then something is still wrong.

  • IPhoto Photo Stream turns off on launch

Every second or third time I open iPhoto and click on the photo stream tab there are no pictures there.  I then have to enable photostream (again) and the pictures download.
How can I keep the photo stream enabled so I don't have to repeatedly download my pictures?

Are we the only ones who have this annoying problem?
And did you ever hear from anyone at Apple?
