[SOLVED] Font glitches in Firefox
I'm using Firefox, infinality-bundle, xf86-video-ati for a Radeon HD 7770 card, and the i3 window manager.
I have an odd problem where some letters in a web page will be displayed as junk. The glitches are uncommon. It may be 1/10 pages I visit, and one character glitch per page. If I change focus from Firefox it will correct the glitches, which is why I can't post a screen capture.
I haven't tried to reproduce in Chromium yet.
Any ideas?

Had the same problem and I solved it with creating a Xorg config file for the Radeon graphics card. The problem appears to be in the EXAPixmaps option, turning it off solved my problem. Paste the following text into a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf as root, using your favorite text editor:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" #valid options are XAA, EXA and Glamor. EXA is the default.
Option "EnablePageFlip" "on" #supported on all R/RV/RS4xx and older hardware and set off by default
Option "EXAVSync" "on" #default is off, otherwise on. Only works if EXA activated
Option "EXAPixmaps" "off" #when on icreases 2D performance, but may also cause artifacts on some old cards. Only works if EXA activated
Option "ColorTiling" "on" #enabled by default on RV300 and later radeon cards.
Option "AccelDFS" "on" #default is off, read the radeon manpage for more information
Option "RenderAccel" "on" #enabled by default on all radeon hardware
EndSection
Afterwards, exit i3 and make sure you exit from the Xorg server and end up in the shell command line, then start i3 (startx). Or log out and log in using your display manager (lightdm etc.) The problem should be solved.

[SOLVED] Fonts different in Chromium and Firefox
I've installed all the microsoft fonts by copying over the TTF files from a windows installation, and as you can see, the fonts work in Firefox but not Chromium.
How can I configure Chromium to use the MS fonts correctly? In Chromium settings I have Arial set as my default Sans-serif font but it doesn't seem to work correctly. Clearly the font is installed because Firefox is using it and I can select it as my default font in Chromium
Last edited by Tom B (2014-10-16 12:31:45)I finally worked out what the issue is. When I pasted the fonts in /usr/share/fonts and ran fc-cache -vf I pasted as root (because /usr/share/fonts isn't writeable by other users) but I never set the permissions on the files themselves! running chmod * 755 on in the /microsoft/ directory I created then fc-cache -vf solved the issue!

Windows 7 Aero glitching with firefox 29.0.1
Windows 7s aero theme is glitching with firefox only. When I hover over the firefox icon on the taskbar, it doesnt display the firefox windows as the miniatures. if I click on an empty space and THEN hover, it will display the windows available as miniatures. if I click on one of them it flashes for an instant and then minimizes. I cant alt+Tab into any windows that become minimized also. if I click on the firefox icon to select a window it flashes for a split second then goes away and I cant click on anything.
basically the aero functions for firefox arent working. and it only seems to be affecting firefox.
steps taken so far:
system restore to a previous point. this helped for about 5 minutes then it went back to the problem.
closing firefox, restarting it, closing it, restarting computer, opening, closing rinse repeat.
manually selecting the window I need from the task manager and selecting "switch to" works to bring it up but thats the only way ive found to open the windows once theyve been minimized.
also cleared the registry and backed it up but the problem happened before that.
removed/unpinned it from taskbar and repinning it. didnt help.
what else can I try?
specs:
windows 7 x64 ultimate
core i3-2100
24GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB
firefox version: 29.0.1Firefox has hardware acceleration set to "on" by default, but it's still young, which means some video cards or drivers might have problems with it. You can try to disable hardware acceleration to see if that alleviates your problems.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps for Firefox version 29.0 and above:
*Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select Options for Windows or Preferences on Mac or Linux. For Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]

With CSS, what font does Ubuntu Firefox substitute for Palatino?
Hello,
I am using the following declaration in my CSS:
.serif {
font-family : Palatino;
I do not have Palatino installed on Ubuntu. I like the font that Ubuntu Firefox is substiuting for Palatino. How do I find out the name of the font that is being substituted for Palatino?
Regards,
PhaseMasterYou can right-click text with that font and use "Inspect Element" to open the Inspector (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) and check the font on the Fonts tab.

How do i solve fonts/display/encoding issue?
This problem only appears on Firefox and no other browsers. When i go into some website the letters will not appear correctly. You may see an example on the link below which contains a screenshot
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/3134/20152698.jpgThis issue can be caused by the Helvetica or Geneva bitmap font or another (bitmap) font that can't be displayed by Firefox in that font size.
Firefox can't display that font in the specified size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or find a True type version of that font that works better. -
I installed Armenian fonts in my computer (Foreign font) and now firefox displays these fonts instead of English fonts
You can try to clear the font cache(s).

[Solved] Font looks terrible in FireFox--need to install better one
Some forums, for example MobileRead and Unix.com, look terrible in FireFox on my new installation of Arch. Or more specifically, the main font used looks terrible.
I had the exact same problem on Fedora a few years ago when I did a new installation. I thought I rememberered that the solution there was to install some Lucida font. But running the command "xlsfonts | grep lucida" gives me the same results on my Fedora and Arch systems.
I installed several font packages with pacman which improved other things but not this.
Any ideas? Is anyone similarly afflicted?
Last edited by KenJackson (2011-06-04 16:41:07)Excellent! I used Kyansaa's solution:
sudo pacman -R xorg-fonts-{75,100}dpi
Now everything looks nice!
Thank you. -

I bet my credits the fault is within the Calibri font.
You can do a font substitution for Calibri. I made the change for all users. Before anyone does this they might check, from the command line, what font is being used for Calibri: 'fc-match Calibri'
In /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ I added the file, 39-no-calibri.conf:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<!-- Replace Calibri with generic fonts
bad ligatures in Calibri -->
<match target="pattern" name="family">
<test name="family" qual="any">
<string>Calibri</string>
</test>
<edit mode="assign" name="family">
<string>Arial</string>
<string>Liberation Sans</string>
<string>sans-serif</string>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
Then I symlinked to it from /etc/fonts/conf.d/:
# pwd
/etc/fonts/conf.d
# ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/39-no-calibri.conf
Finally, I updated the font cache with 'fc-cache -vf'.
