  • [SOLVED] Wireless Connection Problems - Broadcom Corporation BCM4318

Attempting to troubleshoot wifi connectivity issues on a fresh install on an old dell Inspiron 2200. This laptop uses the Broadcom b43 driver:
    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
I read that page top to bottom, installed b43-fwcutter firmware extraction tool, installed the b43 driver. lsmod confirms b43 is installed. lspci shows the drivers are installed, but I can't get the interface to show with ip link or ip addr.
    lspci -vnn | grep 14e4:
    02:03.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02)
I'm confused by dmesg below because it first tells me that "b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found" then a few lines down says driver not found.

Got it running, was missing "b43-firmware" from the AUR, which is different than b43-fwcutter. Instructions kind of unclear there, but hey it's running.

  • Broadband/internet and wireless connection problem...

Towards the end of 2101 I received an email informing me that BT would be upgrading my local line and I could expect a much improved service. Whether this 'upgrade' has been the cause of my problems or is merely coincidental I cannot say. Prior to my experience since this time I could count lost broadband in hours per year (I never had internet or wireless connection problems).
Since the end of 2010 I now regularly lose my broadband completely every six to eight weeks. 'Home Hub cannot connect to broadband.' There is a worsening loss of speed? over a period of two to four days at the end of which I need to phone BT three/four/five, etc. times until they manage to locate the problem and fix it. It is always some problem they find on the line or with their equipment.
I always mention that this is an ongoing problem. Never do they take any action to escalate the issue.
This week things have become considerably worse.
I have started to lose my internet connection now. 'Safari cannot connect to the internet'.
There are now two issues which arise concurrently.
I phoned BT, finally the operative in India (through a very poor BT wireless phone connection) changed the channel of my router for me. He mentioned something about changing the address and password. This seriously exacerbated the situation. My password is not recognised now when I am asked to reconnect by selecting a network.
The next occasion on which I lost my INTERNET connection and tried to reconnect I got the message 'Airport has the self-assigned IP address (...........) and is unable to connect to the internet.
I phoned BT to report this and was told that this indicated an adapter problem and the problem was now out of BT's hands. I Should contact Apple.
I did so. Apple said I should contact BT to change channels. I explained this had caused the problem and they were now refusing to assist me. Apple tried everything that they could think of to resolve the issue (despite not being required to do so). Eventually the only suggestion they could make as BT had refused to help was to reinstall my operating system. Extremely drastic. But I can now connect wirelessly again.
Service is still intermittent requiring constant restarts to regain connections.
BT's response to a formal complaint was more of the usual banal questions, the usual tests, the usual promises of 'something would be done'.
Their systems are not set up to make any sort of accurate diagnosis of customers' issues. They seem to have a set number of 'fixes' into which they try to fit all problems - one would assume simply to save costs - their cost saving exercises are now costing me money.
    That's all for starters.
    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem, since BT "upgraded my broardband" my home hub looses internet connection at least twice a day and I have to power reset it. the broadband shows as connected but the internet connection is lost, if I try reconnecting it fails and only a power resetr will work. I have a temp solution by fitting a time switch to the mains adaptor and reseting it at 0200 each day. but before the upgrade the home hub had worked for years and no problems. i have also replaced the origonal home hub 1 with a home hub 2 to see if that improves the situation.

This subject has been marked as solved by the originator and you will get more response if you start your own subject rather than continue here.
if you start your own subject just cut and paste your post and then in order to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • I am experiencing wireless connection problem on 4s after ios 8.1 upgrade. The wireless icon appears showing that it's connected but webpages do not load. I have checked my internet connection with other devices and seems to be alright. what to do?

    Hi
I am experiencing wireless connection problem on 4s after ios 8.1 upgrade. The wireless icon appears showing that it's connected but webpages do not load. I have checked my internet connection with other devices and seems to be alright. what to do?
I have tried reseting the network settings and forgetting my wireless connection and re-connecting to it. I even backed up my phone on itunes and restored it, factory reseted it. Nothing seems to work.
Also after my upgrade to ios 8.1 my personal hotspot option under cellular data has disappeared.
Would you please help me out? I would really appreciate it.

    Hi..
Restart your router then restart the iPhone to test.
If that doesn't help, try this support article >   iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

  • Wireless connectivity problems using IOS 6.0.2?

After installing IOS 6.0.2 on my iPhone 5 I can no longer connect to known wireless sites.  I've been through troubleshooting with both Apple and my ISP and no luck.  I'm thinking there's wireless connectivity problems with this latest update (my iPad 3 is still running 6.0.1 and is fine on my wireless network). Are others having this issue as well?

I am not guaranteeing this fix , but it worked for me , so far. I have an iphone 5 and it had ios 6.0.1 . Worked fine. Upgraded to 6.0.2 and it wouldn't connect with home router most of the time. My son in law an IT guy for the Government came up with a solution. The problem seemed most likely with routers that are bought and not configured and retain the original factory settings. Therefore my phone considers my home network a generic one and I have to manually connect to it. To distinguish the network we did the following.
    1) went to settings on my iphone
    2) choose "my home network" by pushing the arrow on the right
    3) This brought up the network info page. (it says "forget this network " at the top)
    4)DHCP will probably be highlighted.
    5) touch "static"
    6) This will bring up the manual settings
    7) We entered the following.
    For Ip Address 192.168.1.15
    Subnet Mask  255.255.255.0
    Router 192.168.1.1
    DNS 4.2.2.1,4.2.2.2,8.8.8.8
Leave the HTTP Proxy to off
This will assign a static Ip address not a dynamic one and should work.
If it doesn't , go back to step 3 and select DHCP and return to the dynamic state .

  • Fix for Airport Wireless Connection Problem stating Self-Assigned IP and not wanting to connect in Lion OSX.

Fix for Airport Wireless Connection Problem stating Self-Assigned IP and not wanting to connect in Lion OSX.
Bought my girlfriend the newest Macbook Pro 13" and began experiencing problems with my wifi the moment we got home. Her Macbook would not connect to our home Wi-Fi while my old Macbook Late 2008 running Snow Leopard connected without a problem. Airport would say that it had a Self-Assigned IP address (168.x.x.x). Did not realize it was a Lion problem until after using her Macbook Pro and becoming jealous of the new OSX, I upgraded. Soon after I was unable to go online. Luckily I had my iPad 2 and I began to scoure the net for help. Ran into allot of suggestions but it was not until I tried the following all together was I able to share the good new, from my Macbook. Hope this works:
First go to Preferences > Network and click on the cog next to the + and - on the sidebar and click Set Service Order
         - Move Wi-Fi to the top and click ok.
         - Set location to Automatic
         - Click Apply
         - Click Advanced
         - Click the "-" on the selected Wi-Fi router you wish to connect to
         - Click Apply
         - Click Lock to Prevent Further Changes
Go to your Mac's harddrive, (Macintosh)
         - Go to Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration >
         - Delete "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" file
    Turn off your computer
         - push and hold Option+Command+R+P
         - turn on computer
         - when the grey screen turns on you will hear the OS X "ON" sound (for lack of a proper term) and it will momentarily restart.
         - you will once again hear the "ON" sound, let go of all keys.
         - this resets your PRAM
Go to Preferences > Network > Advanced > + sign
         - click Choose a Network
         - Select your network and enter password
Viola!!! I tried this on my Macbook Late 2008 and my girlfriends new Macbook Pro 2010

No you are clearly mistaken. The Self-Assigned IP address problem exists on many Macbook Pro models, including the current model, which I mentioned as being the original computer with the problem. While my 2008 Macbook is older it was working perfectly on Snow Leopard and didn't suffer issues until switching to Lion. So clearly the problem exists on the operating system and not so much the hardware.
I called Apple Support  and they had no fix for the problem and told me that this would hopefully be addressed in a subsequent update. It wasn't until I came accross the answer after trying many different methods that I got both of the Macbooks to connect to my router. Otherwise I wouldn't or could not have been surfing the internet for the last 4 months.
    Cheers.

  • Macbook Pro Wireless Connection Problems

I bought my 13 inch macbook pro 1 week ago and I've had wireless connection problems from day 2 (I think after the updates).
    Problems include:
    - Safari cannot connect to the internet for 5~10 minutes after I turn it on, whether it be from sleep mode or completely off or restart (the fastest connection I got after turning it on was about 40 seconds)
    - Loading takes ridiculously long and eventually Safari cannot find the server
    - Airport signal (on the top right hand corner) is always full when it is not working
    - Sometimes internet works but it is ridiculously slow
However, when the wireless connection stabilizes, Airport Signal is 2~3 bars full and internet works SOOO well and I love it so much when it does. But the problem is that it stabilizes like 30 minutes to never after I turn it on and it makes me so mad I want to explode this piece of crap in the microwave.
So I've called apple support, and they made me try four things:
    1. Reset modem, router, and computer
    2. Delete caches, reset Safari
    3. Putting Airport first on the Service Order and resetting DHCP Lease
    4. Connecting with Ethernet Cable then resetting the computer
None of these worked, and I'm suspecting that the cause of the problem is the hardware (not the aluminum body that's just bs) because my router and modem are working fine (my other samsung laptop is working perfectly). I don't think the problem lies in my network settings either because I did exactly what the Apple technicians told me to do. So after Appleguy made me try all 4 of those diagnostics, he told me to contact my router company NETGEAR because he thinks nothing is wrong with the mac hardware, so I did. The NETGEAR lady told me if one laptop is working and another isn't, there is nothing wrong with the router. So if nothing is wrong with my hardware, software, router, modem, ISP... Why do I have wireless issues????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I'm going to return this <edited by host> or get another one with my warranty

    Same thing here.
I've got a Macbook Pro 15" bought 6 weeks ago, airport express bought about a year ago. All updated with latest software/firmware, etc. Problems include:
-Sometimes when i pull down the network list, my network isn't even there, yet i'm still connected to it. My airport is appx 10 feet away in an open area.
-usually after opening safari or firefox for the first time upon sleep, restart, or just opening the program after i had quit it, it is miserably slow. it takes about 2 minutes for pages like msn.com to load. finally when they do, its faster than you can imagine. that lasts for about a minute. then its slow again.
-when logged into ichat and i send messages, i would sometimes get a "connection timeout" message. my buddy would end up getting the message about 5 minutes later.
My iphone and dell laptop work fine. i haven't tried running parallels, but if bootcamp works, so should prlls.
I've reset the modem about 20 times. i've reset the airport about 20 times. i even re-installed my OS on the mac and nothing has done it.
Weird thing is that i've had my mac for 6 weeks, and this problem surfaced only 3 days ago.
Clearly its not an issue of any of our ISP's. Due to the fact that this only started for me 3 dyas ago, i'm hopeful that its only a software problem and not something else. Hopefully apple will a) ADMIT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM HERE and b) FIX IT.

  • A Fix for Wireless Connection Problems

I’ve been struggling with connection problems for a week. Thankfully, I found a fix. Your mileage may vary, but this may be your answer:
Fix for Wireless Connection Problems on MacBook Pro

Yeah BR, please tell me what your cure is. I have the same setup as you, Vista with the same wireless card you have. Cannot stay connected to the internet. Have spent hours on the phone with tech support and they can't fix it. I hate this f....ing computer, will never buy another one. Please let me know what you did. Once I get it running right I'm selling it and will buy a cheap Dell, never have any problems with them. I have keyboard problems, capital letter problems, connection problems, and download can take 1 to 2 days. Pure BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wireless Connection Problems for Home Hub 3 and Vi...

We have upgraded from BT Home Hub 2 to version 3 and had a BT man (engineer) visit to set it up. He did so with no problems on our PC (wired, runnning XP) and installed all relevant software on the PC and this is connected which so far has been fast (enough - as expected) and reliable. Once the 'main' computer in the house was connected we then tried to connect other things to the internet using this BT Hub 3.
However when attempting to connect our family laptop (running Vista) we hit trouble. Initially I tried to use the icon in the tray (bottom right of the screen) by clicking on connect to a network, then selecting our hub, then inputting the wireless key and going through the menus correctly. It would only connect 'locally' and not recognise the hub. It says identifying then says unidentified (public network BT Hub 3) and only 'local' access which I then change to private network. With my preivious internet I was able to set it up as Home network - now I can only choose between public or private BUT NOT Home, Work or Public.
So I then tried the BT disc that comes with the hub into the laptop. I go through the menus - it asks is the broadband light steady blue? Yes. Click next to continue wireless set up. So I press continue. It then asks for the wireless network/SSID BTHub3- numbers and letters and the wireless key. So I put that in correctly (double checking) and click next. It then says Connecting to your Hub which then gets ticked but then the checking wireless key doesn't tick - it crosses, and says failed. It asks me to check I typed the numbers and letters correctly (I am sure of that) and It goes to Manuel set up. Where I select my hub and again type in the wireless key and click next. But the same thing happens - connecting to your hub gets ticked but checking wireless key fails.
I then get a message that says i should do a wired set up, which I can do and works but on the laptop wired solutions is just not satisfactory - laptops need wireless connectivity. Is this a problem with my laptop, Vista or the hub/modem or a combination.
I also have been able to connect other things to the internet such as a netbook (running Windows 7) and a games console. Please comment if anthing needs explaining or more detail. Your help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

John46: I uninstalled the Hub programmes you said to. I then tried to connect to a network (wirelessly - accessed either by going to Start - Connect to or from the icon in the tray (bottom right). I selected my hub and clicked connect. It does its thing and says 'successfully connected to...' I close that and go onto Network and Sharing Center and it shows its trying to identify the network and wait a few seconds it then shows 'unidentified network (public network)...' and that I have only got local access and so cannot surf the web.
As I mentioned in my earlier post:
With my previous Internet I was able to set it up as Home network - now I can only choose between public or private BUT not got the choice between Home, Work or Public.
    Hope I've explained myself.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Wireless Connection Problems

Started having problems scanning. Then problems printing from my desktop - Unable to find printer. Uninstalled / Re-installed HP Software / Drivers; Desktop is still unable to find the printer - During setup: The IP Address is either incorrect or it is from a different wireless network that has the same name as your network.
    I have verified the following:
The IP Address of my Desktop and Printer are the same except the last number
The HP Scan and Print doctor sees the printer and indicates all is functioning normally
I can see the printer via web browser and the printer's IP address on my desktop
I can print to the printer via wireless from my iPad and laptop
The only issue is configuring the printer on my desktop and actually printing from it.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Hello NorseGuy ,
Please let me take a moment to say "Welcome" to the HP Forums.
I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see that you are having an issue with staying connected on the wireless network.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
I would also suggest going through the following document for troubleshooting  the Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection
Please feel free to write me back if you have any other questions or concerns.
    Thank you.

  • OfficeJet wireless connection problems

I am hoping someone can help me as I have exhausted every option I can find.
I bought an OfficeJet 6830 All in one printer. I have several devices that need access to it.
My desktop Dell uses a USB cable to connect to the printer and it works well.
I have three laptops that I would like to connect wirelessly to the printer, but I can't get any of them to identify the printer.
I can install the printer using a USB cable, so I know the software and drivers will install.
When I set up the printer, I set up the wireless connection. The printer attaches to my Actiontec router (FiOS) and I can log into the router to see the device. It shows it as active. The blue light on the front panel of the printer is on and solid. I can check the settings in the printer and it shows the correct SSID and correct format for an IP address. I have set it up as a static address in the router and manually set it in the printer.
The problem occurs when I try to install the software on the laptops. I get to the point wher I specify the connection as Wireless and the software attempts to find the printer, but it never finds it. I have tried manually typing in the address for the printer, but this does not help with discovery.
I even tried installing the drivers and software using the USB cable which was successful. I then tried to convert the connection from USB to Wireless, but I don't think the software was waiting long enough for the printer to establish an IP address, because it would show a panel that stated the printer was connected to the network but waiting on an IP address. I would select Wait for the printer to establish an IP address, but even after the printer's blue light stopped flashing and stayed solid, the software still cannot find the printer.
Anyone have further suggestions I might try to get it connected to my laptop?
I would hate to ship back the printer, but if I can't print wirelessly, then I need to find a better printer
    Thanks.
    Update:
I found the Actiontec article and reread it twice before noticing that AES encryption was needed rather than the TKIP/AES I was using. I changed it to AES and I was able to install the software and get the printer to communicate with the laptop over the wireless connection.
Unfortunately, it didn't last very long as it is again refusing to communicate between the laptop and printer.
Does anyone have a clue what's going wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi blbower,
Well, by the sounds of things we may have our work cut out for us.
Let's start off right frm square one.
Please remove the usb cable from the Windows XP computer and from the printer and leave it disconnected until further notice.
If you have already attempted to install the software and drivers on the Windows 7 computers, please click on the following link for Uninstalling the Printer Software.  I suggest you do this for each computer so that we are starting off clean.
Once the uninstall is complete, please restart each computer so that the changes take affect.
If you have any firewalls or anti virus protection running, disable it on each and every computer.
This next link is the HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers .Please save this file on each computer to the Desktop so that it creates its own icon.
Double click the new icon and follow the instructions for the installation.
These steps will need to be done on each system.
On the printers main display, we are going to need to reset the Network Defaults so that it starts off fresh.
On the front touch panel, scroll to the right to the Setup option, go to Network set up and then to Restore Network Defaults. Press YES to make the changes.
Once it has been reset, go to the Network Setup option once again and this time select Wireless Set up Wizard.  Once this is complete you will then see an IP address that you can add to each computer on the portion where it asks for a connection option in the installation.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
Thanks once again for your time.
    Cheers,

    hey andrew5s,
try uninstalling the wireless driver for your unit, let windows install its generic driver.
test your wireless with the generic driver.

  • Weird Laptop Wireless Connection Problem

I have an HP DV6 6C16NR i7-2670QM laptop and am having a very annoying wireless internet connection problem.
I'll connect fine to my home network, but if I restart and try to connect again, it won't. The only way to fix it, is if I change the channel on my router. And then it'll repeat itself.
Any idea what's going on here? Must be some sort of proxy/memory type problem?
Using Netgear WNDR3700 with only 2.4ghz enabled. Lots of other wireless devices in our home connects without any issues at all. ie. cellphones (4), wireless alarm clock, IP cams (2) and a netbook.
Is this a hardware issue that I should warranty?

    Hello ThaiM69,
I'm not sure if you have Windows 7 or 8.  Please take a look at this page and let me know if the troubleshooting steps help to resolve your connection issue.
    Good luck!

  • 2Wire wireless connection problem

    Hi everyone,
I've just installed an airport card into my IBook G3 running OSX 10.2.8. I'm connected to a 2WIRE wireless 2701HG-B wireless modem. We have G4 laptop that's connecting with no problems.
The IBook G3 is able to establish a connection to the wireless modem but is experiencing the following problems:
*In Entourage, I can receive emails but not send them. Error message is Mail Error. Server busy. Try again later. Error 5421. Could this be a problem with the SMTP override default number? Mine is currently set at 587.
*In Safari, I can access some websites but not others (cnn.com, google.com - yes; mapquest, yahoo.com, gmail.com -- no).
*In Firefox and Explorer, I cannot connect to webpages at all. It tries for 60 secs and then says it couldn't connect.
I have connected with this Airport card to a NETGEAR network at my office with no problems. On the 2WIRE network, the airport connection icon shows full bars.
I would appreciate any help that you might offer. I would love to make this G3 work wirelessly at home.
    Thanks in advance.

    Let me know the results.
    and you replied:
Wait! I just tried it again. Cleared my cache, turned on my wireless connection, and typed this in the browser. Took me to Google.
So he has established that you have a good connection, but DNS isn't working. DNS is the service which allows you to type in a meaningful name like www.google.com instead of 72.14.207.99. How this works is that your machine has a process called a resolver (lookupd for OSX) which queries servers out in the world. BDAqua gave you the addresses of two servers. If you entered them in System Preferences they should stay there. Did you remember to click the Apply button?
I really think BDAqua has solved this. We can look further, but it seems to clearly be a DNS problem.

  • Old MSI all-in-one wireless connectivity problem

    Hi folks,
Hope someone can help - if only by sending me somewhere else!
I have a reasonably old MSI all-in-one model MS-6633 (NetON AP 1900) which I bought new perhaps 6 or 7 years ago.
I'm running it wirelessly, connected via a TP-Link Powerline Ethernet Adaptor.  My main PC is wired to a TalkTalk modem.
For some reason it's recently been disconnecting itself from the internet, although, by going to 'connect to' I can usually fairly quickly regain the internet connection.
I've spoken to TalkTalk and their tech guy ran 20 minutes of tests - at the end of which he said that there was nothing wrong with my internet connection or any other equipment leading to my PC......so the problem must be in the MSI unit.
Mind you, I don't entirely trust him - would he tell me if I was getting brief disconnections caused by a fault at their end?
He gave me the MSI number (0870 8200 009) - which always comes up with a "we're busy" automated answer - and I don't know what else to do.
Can anyone help; tell me what I need to do, or redirect me to somewhere useful.
    Thank you

Hi there - glad someone cares!!!
Yep - definitely in the UK - whether I like it or not!
Right - O/S is Windows XP Home edition
Automated updates are always turned on....
Connection to the phone line is by router
I considered removing and re-installing the drivers, but thought I'd ask around first.....
Actually, yesterday I did a clean-up which hadn't been done for ages.
The computer concerned is my spare/back-up, which my wife uses at present and I do tend to forget to do any housekeeping on it though, but  ever since I worked it over, (cookies, temp files, etc removed) there's been no problem with the internet connection.
I'm not taking the kudos - I just thought I'd do it and just perhaps, it's solved the problem.
However, if anyone knows of a better way to ensure that the computer remains connected, I'd love to hear from you.
