Spanish accent characters are not displayed proper in excel file

Hi
I have written a program which displays one report file (.xls file ) on the browser.
This report file is in spanish language and contains few accent characters like
(" "). These characters are not displyed properly in that excel file which is opened in the browser. I have used utf-8 encoding method. I tried with some other encoding methods available. But still this problem continues.
Kindly provide me help as soon as possible.
Thanks and
Regards,
Deval

File is generated through a java bean at runtime and it is not stored pgysically.
If I copy these characters from somewhere to new xls file then it will be displayed properly.
Sample code which is used for setting headers is as below:
protected void setContentType (
HttpServletResponse     p_response
,     InstanceData          p_instancedata
p_response.setHeader ("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
p_response.setHeader ("Cache-Control", "max-age=0");
p_response.setHeader (
"Content-Disposition", "inline; filename="
+      p_instancedata.userId
+      "_"
+      System.currentTimeMillis ()
+     ".csv"
System.out.println("Content generator = ");
p_response.setHeader("charset","utf-8");
p_response.setContentType (EXCEL_CONTENT_TYPE);
For generating this xls file, format of data is XML. Means both request and response data will be in XML format.
Hope this information help in suggesting any solution for this problem.

• Chinese characters are not displayed in the Firefox bookmarks

Chinese characters are not displayed in the Firefox bookmarks. The name looks like e.g. "??????? ???? cn.nytimes.com"
Chinese character of the site name is displayed ok in the head of the browser window and there is no problem reading chinese web content. I use Firefox Portable 11 /English from portableapps.com in Windows XP.
I googled and got some tips:
1) Set your browser to recognise Chinese language internet sites.
Windows users: Under "Tools - Options" on your browser's menu-bar add Chinese to the languages list.
- I did this.
2) Set your browser's "Character Set" or "Encoding" to UTF-8 (sometimes also called Universal Alphabet or Unicode).
Encoding settings can be changed under the "View" option in your browser's menu-bar.
- It was already set to UTF-8.
3) Windows users: If Chinese text still does not display correctly, East Asian language support may need to be enabled.
- This has been done when I installed Windows.
I still don't get any Chinese fonts in the bookmark names. I can edit the bookmark name with chinese characters and then save the bookmark, it works fine. But why does not Firefox recognize the characters when saving bookmarks? Help is appreciated.

No I didn't change anything deep beneath the hood. My problem didn't apply to the URL, but to the name of the link or bookmark header or whatever you would like to call it. (When hitting Ctrl + D there is a Name field). I only got ???????? instead of chinese characters in the name. Also for e.g. www.cntv.cn ...but maybe all China is not in the whitelist either. ;-) But anyway, this was not the real problem for me.
Apparently I was wrong as after a reboot of the computer it worked. The solution seemed to be to add Chinese to the language list. I don't know why it was not enough to restart Firefox?
Now I only have problems to show chinese characters in the name field of my external link manager... But I guess it is not an issue for Mozilla.

• Smartforms - Chinees characters are not displayed properly

Hi,
The chineese characters are not displayed propery when logged in EN in the logon screen, but we are able to see Chineese characters when logged in with ZH - chineese in the logon screen. This is happening for Sales order and Purchase order and for Japan also we fee see the same issue.

Hi,
It is a printer issue. The printer needs to be configured to support the Chinese chanracter set.
Normally when we are able to view the chinese characters properly in the print preview but not properly displayed on the output it is surely a printer problem.
This kind of problem we faced many times.

• Leading zeros are not displaying in the excel

Hi Experts,
Leading zeros are not displaying in the excel
Here is the situation:
I have developed one report, which will create the file in Application server with TAB deleimeted. After that I am sending that file via email in the excel format using Email functionality FM.
Normally our material numbers will start with zeros.
But when I check the email excel file , leading zeros are not displaying.
Even I checked the application server (AL11) file, zeros are there.
I thought program FM was wrong and I tried it manually by downloading the file into excel. Eventhough it is suppressing zeros.
Could you please advise, how to display leading zeros to the material number in excel file.
Thanks in advance
Raghu

Application server file showing zeros infront of the material number.
1200#  0012401387# XXXXXXXX
Once file created in app server, I am using one custom FM to send that output in excel format / txt format via email.
when I send txt file via email, I am getting leading zeros. But when I send xls file via email, I am not getting zeros.
I checked custom FUNCTION MODULE . No mistakes in that.
===
Sudhir,
As you said, I passed ( ' ) single quote infront of the material number. When I check the excel file, single quote also displaying like this '0000100.
Application server file showing like below
1200#  '0012401387# XXXXXXXX
===
Could you please advise anyone how can we acheive this.
Thanks

• Infotypes special characters are not displayed correctly

hi experts,
While entering names with special characters in infotypes it happens that some of them are not correctly displayed .
can you please help me out as soon as possible
thnx
harish

Thank you for your fast reply :)
The site is not online available unfortunately.
The character encoding used by Firefox is UTF-8 (automatically detected) which is correct. I even tried manually switching to other Chinese standards, but none of them brought a satisfieable result.
The site itself does not specify a font (the css only contains "font-family: Arial,Tahoma,Verdana;"), and the site does not provide a custom font either.
I noticed that if i copy and paste the text into word, the characters are wrongly displayed too using the font MS Mincho (so I assume Firefox automatically selects this font to display the characters which would explain why they are displayed incorrectly)
Ah, I now included the font "SimSun" in the css (which is installed on in windows and using this font the characters are displayed correctly in word) - and this solved he problem!
Thanks for your help!!

• Chinese simple characters are not displayed correctly (Old (TW? HK?) style instead of modern characters)

We a currently trying to translate our software into Chinese and we noted that some of the chinese characters are displayed incorrectly (it seems the Taiwanese/Hongkong version is displayed instead of the modern simple character)
The problem exists in both Firefox 3.6 as well as 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 (we did not try with other versions yet)
The characters are displayed correctly in IE 9.x and Google Chrome 13.0.782.220 m and we are positive it is not a problem with the website itself.
I copied part of a screenshot on: http://stuff.schoellhammer.at/bsp.png
The bottom part is the character from the input scheme (correctly displayed) but once it is entered in firefox (top part), the left character is displayed in incorrectly.

Thank you for your fast reply :)

• Accented characters do not display correctly

Hello,
I created a report in CR with an Oracle8i ODBC connection (version 8.01.74.00). The strange thing is that accented characters are displayed weird in the report although the characters are just fine when I look at them via sqlplus. At first I thought it was a CR problem but I got the same results in Access.
Eg. in sqlplus I see this:
user comment :"Veuillez faire réparer dès que possible la photocopieuse
But in the report I see this:
user comment :"Veuillez faire réparer dès que possible la photocopieuse
I already played around with the NLS_LANG setting in the registry but this didn't help.
Does anybody has an idea how I can solve this?
Thx,
Geert

One possibility is that the Windows regional settings on your machine may be conflicting with your NLS settings. Access and Crystal Reports probably look there exclusively, recent versions of Oracle ODBC driver and SQL*Plus will look exclusively to your NLS settings, while the 7.3 era ODBC driver probably looks to the Windows regional sessings.

• Accented characters do not display correctly if there is a variable beside it

Hello,
We are experiencing a problem when we have text with accented characters an a variable beside it within the same text box.
The problem is that the accented characters in the text do not display correctly in the preview or publised course to Flash9
These characters display correctly in Captivate in edit mode.
This is the process we have followed:
Export to XML
Translated
Import XML
Publish to Flash9
Captivate version:  4
OS: Windows Vista SP2
We have tried to work with locale in Spanish with no luck, the only solution we have found is to put the text and the variable in different text boxes
I have pasted an image of the preview and also of the text in Captivate edit mode.
Any help will be very welcomed !
Tess

Hi there
I agree with Lilybiri that you should definitely file a Bug Report.
However, a thought occurs here. Have you tried placing the accented text in a User Defined variable?
Assuming this is a workaround, my thought is that you could then just have a caption with two variables. The User Defined variable containing the accented text followed immediately by the system variable providing the Project Name.
Cheers... Rick

• Japanese and Russian characters are not displayed properly

• [solved] Emacs in X windows - Characters are not displayed

Emacs works fine when run with -nw.
But when I run it without, in X Windows, emacs does not display characters properly. It just displays those whites boxes with the black borders. The ones you see when you're trying to view characters for which you don't have the right font.
I installed XEmacs, and that worked fine. I don't understand why the normal Emacs doesn't.
I'll post a screenshot when I'm home from work, but you should get the gist of the problem.
Last edited by Weeks (2007-05-05 23:18:59)

Yeah I figured that out when I got back home. It was my own fault for running emacs from Run Program in xfce instead of from the Terminal.
However, I've installed that package along with the 75dpi one and it still doesn't work. I even ran fc-cache again just to be sure. Weird.
The error is "Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct" So perhaps it's a fontconfig problem. Both fontconfig and freetype2 as up-to-date. Hmm.
[EDIT] I restared X and everything worked. Thanks. I've updated the wiki with the information. I'll send a diff to the maintainer at some point; the PKGBUILD should really tell the user that he/she needs to install these fonts if using X windows

• Specific characters are not displayed

Hi I'm encountering the following problem:
Although I managed to display Greek characters in my wap application some characters are displayed
as a square followed by ?.Can you help me.I can't figure out what the problem might be.
Thanks in advance.

If the display is using a java GUI (I dont know much about WAP apps), you can determine what characters are supported by a font using 'Font.canDisplayUpTo (String)'. For example:
Font font = somethingToGetYourFont ();
String charlist="\u0391\u0392\u0393..."; // Greek character set as unicode escapes
int index = font.canDisplayUpTo (charlist);
if (index==-1)
// can display all characters in the string
else
// fails on character #index
}

• Why after exporting PDF to Word some characters are not displaying accurately.

I exported a PDF to Word and it changed the case of some of the characters from upper case to lower case and even changed the font. In some areas the kerning is wonky too. What do I need to do differently?

Very likely you are not needing to change anything. Some variation in output can be found depending on the data structure of the file involved.
Will Adobe ExportPDF convert both text and formatting information?Adobe ExportPDF is capable of exporting high quality information, but the quality of your Word document depends on the quality of the PDF file you start with. For instance, if your PDF file was originally authored in Microsoft Word and converted to PDF using the PDF Maker functionality in Adobe Acrobat® software, your PDF file contains a rich set of information that can be captured by Adobe ExportPDF. This includes relative positioning of tables, images, and even multicolumn text, as well as page, paragraph, and font attributes. If your PDF file was originally authored using simpler PDF generation methods, such as “print to PDF” or “scan to PDF” options, Adobe ExportPDF will convert any recognizable text and then use sophisticated conversion intelligence to preserve as much of the page layout as possible.

• Japanese characters are not displayed properly - Crystal Report XI

Hello,
We are upgrading reports from CR8 to CR11.
When I preview the CR8 report I can see the Japanese Characters (Coming from Database).
After saving the CR8 report as CR11 report, When I preview the report I cannot see the Japanese Character which I was able to see in CR8.
Why I am seeing unknown characters in CR11? When CR8 displays Japanese, then CR11 should display right?
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in Advance

Hi Mani,
< is a special HTML character and obviously it may not me displayed correctly.
Here is a reference of all HTML special characters: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_entities.asp
In your case you can replace < with its special symbol representation - *< or <*
I also advice you to do so for all special HTML characters.
You can use this Java library for that purpose : http://commons.apache.org/lang/api/org/apache/commons/lang3/StringEscapeUtils.html
