1.4.2 and 1.5 serialization portability
Hello,
I came across the problem of reading class previously serialized w/ jdk 1.4.2_02 using jdk 1.5.
I have embedded object database and everything works fine with the jdk1.4. The problem is happening when I am trying to run the program with jre 1.5 . (the program is compiled with jdk 1.4.2)
OS is Windows2000.
Any suggestions? Did anybody encounter this type of the problem?

It is not a Bean; I am using internal object database that is based in RandomAccessFile and serialization of the objects.
I am a bit confused with the statement that serialization is not portable between versions - is there more detailed analysis of that somethere...? this is a major problem for me. It was my understanding that as long as one uses Externilizable or/and putting serialVersionUID, there should not be any problem and backwards compatibility is supported. If this is not true - all Object databases have a problem
If anybody has experiense with this or can direct me information related to this problem I would much appreciate your help.

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it. I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB. Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully? I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible. Is this correct?
Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization. -
my laptop will not boot up from the storage hard drive but if i remove it from the laptop and connect it as portable hard drive my laptop boot up normal?
Do you have a compatible OSX installed on this 'storage' HDD? If not, it will not boot your MBP.

you can control serialization on a service-by-service basis. You can specify which serializer to use for the service with the <serializer> element in the service-scheme element corresponding to the service in the scache configuration file.
Be aware, though, that if you use Coherence*Extend, and the service serializer configuration for the proxy service does not match the serializer configuration of the service which you are proxying to the extend client then the proxy node has to de- and reserialize the data which it moves between the service and the client.

Problem with writing and reading using serialization
I am having a problem with writing and reading an object that has another object in it. The purpose of the class is to write a order that has multiple items in it. And there will be several orders. This is for an IB project, where one of the requirements is to utilize a hierarchical composite data structure. That is, it is "one that contains more than one element and at least one of the elements is a composite data structure. Examples are, an array or linked list of records, a record that has one field that is another record, or an array". The code is shown below:

Kilik07ok i got reading to work to a certain extent... but the prob is i cnt seem to save my innerCustOrdObj proprly...when ever i look for a record using the gotorecordbtn, the outerobject, which is the orderDetails, seems to change but the innerCustOrdObj remains the same... heres the new code..

Running OSX and apps on a portable drive
Hi all, I share an iMac with my family and I do heavy photo editing and takes tons of pictures for a website I'm doing in iWeb.
My question is how to save hard drive space? I cannot figure a way to make iWeb only use pictures from a portable drive and be able to work with them via iPhoto (and videos via iDVD).
Is it possible to buy a new external drive, load OSX onto it and run my programs on that portable drive -- and have the files also remain on that drive?
That way, I wouldn't suck up all the HD space on what is still our family computerYou can run a separate copy of OSX on the external drive (just use the OSX install disc that came with the computer), but it would be simpler and easier to just store your iPhoto library on the external drive.
I'm assuming you're using your own user account on the computer that's separate from your other family members. If not, this procedure will move the other family members' photos as well as yours, so you might want to make a separate account if you don't already have one (System Preferences -> Accounts -> click the plus sign to add an account).
1) Drag the iPhoto Library file (inside your Pictures folder) onto the external drive to copy it.
2) Open up iPhoto while holding the Option key
3) In the resulting dialog box, choose the iPhoto Library on the external drive. If it isn't in the list, choose Other Library and find the file on the external drive.
All your apps that work from the iPhoto library (iWeb, iDVD, etc) should now use the copy on the external drive. -
Using Overdrive to download WP3 audiobook, then wanted to transfer to itunes (as I have done for years) and Overdrive couldn't find portable player. Don't want it to go to portable player, want it to go to itunes/music. Can I change "player"? When I "transferred" to iPod, I couldn't find the book. Have updated iTunes and Overdrive.

I got too brave and I transfered music and I-Tunes to portable drive
I thought it would be better to have all my itunes stuff on a portable harddrive (H) instead of tied to one specific computer. I moved my shared file and all it's music and downloaded Itunes 9.0.1.8 onto the (H). Now Itunes doesn't recognize any songs. I have to locate each song for it from the shared file. If that's not bad enough, the "locate" button automatically goes into the C drive shared, I have to select my way into the H drive shared, then select the songs. We're talking over 1000 songs. Is there a better way. Also, I've done this with about a hundred songs so far but when I sync'd my Ipod, less than half of the checked songs that I've manually "located" end up on my Ipod. What can I do?

It doesn't consolidate anything unless you tell it to. Consolidate copies everyhting you see in iTunes, into the iTunes music (or iTunes Media) folder.
It simply opened the library you selected. -

Why won't AdBlock Plus save my blocked URLs and images in Firefox Portable?
I am running Firefox Portable from my flash drive. I can block images and URLs just fine using AdBlock Plus, but it never saves them between sessions and I have t block them all over again each time I start FF. I've looked through the settings, but I can't seem to find a place to save a file and reopen it again.

No "use passphrase" option in X220 BIOS, and no HDD Password portability
My goal is to set an HDD password to an Intel SSD drive, that can be unlocked both on the X220, and also on another computer, so the data on the drive are not tied to a particular machine in case of hardware failure.
I found on the forum that the "use passphrase" option in some older thinkpad BIOSes allows exactly this HDD password portability. When this option is disabled on a T60, I can set a HDD password, that can unlock the drive both on the T60 itself (that's expected!), and also on another Dell desktop. So far so good...
The problem is that this option is not available in the X220 BIOS (version 1.26), and as a consequence, there's is no way to set an HDD password on the X220 that is recognized on the T60 and/or the Dell desktop. So I assume the option just got removed to avoid confusion, and the default behaviour is now to always "use passphrase".
I found a reference about a password length of 7 characters in the x220 user manual, page 92 : "If you set a hard disk password of over seven characters, the hard disk drive can be used only with a computer that can recognize a hard disk password of over seven characters." I tried to set a single letter HDD password, but even in this case the HDD password cannot be unlocked on another machine. So in my experience, there's no difference based on the HDD password length.
so my question is : is there a way to set an HDD password so the drive can be unlocked not just on the X220, but on another box.Well, then ideally, it would be great if the "use passphrase" option could be added in a future BIOS update for the X220, just like this option seems to exist on another recent thinkpad model (for example the W510,https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Can-t-remove-HDD-password/td-p/241538), so the user has the two choices:
- use the more-secure-because-hashed-in-an-undocumented-way passphrase as HDD password (with the consequence that a drive locked this way can only be unlocked on the same model of thinkpad)
or
- use the less-secure-because-passed-unmodified-to-the-drive HDD password (but compatible with BIOS from other manufacturers). -
I hope someone can help me with the above question about using a porable speaker for awhile and then being unable to have sound on my computer after I remove the speaker. I don't know how to recover the sound unless I turn off the computer...and this is frustrating when I'm receiving a Skype call ( we live overseas and receive callls fairly often). Thanks for any help on this problem. It just started a week or so ago though I've been streming TV with this speaker for several months without the problem.

Tony A. Smith,III.Try looking for a sliding switch on the flash drive. Some flash drives have this switch to provide write protection for the contents and it can be easy to accidentally enable it.
In the image below you can see a slider on the side of the drive that can move between a lock symbol and an unlocked symbol.

Trying to use portable hard drive on both my Mac and PC...
I just purchased a Toshiba Canvio Plus 1TB portable hard drive for my three Macs. Out of the box, I need to format the drive for Mac, which is fine, but I just found out that my fiance would also like to use it for her work computer, which is a PC running Windows XP. I need your help in finding out how to read and write to this portable drive from both a Mac and PC.
I thought about partitioning the drive but that wouldn't work because we want both systems to access the same data. After doing a few Google searches, I thought formatting the drive to a FAT32 would be the answer but I read that file sizes can't exceed 4GB. Since I purchased this specifically to complement my new HD camcorder, a 4GB file size limit will not work for us.
One last thing, since she has a company-issued PC, I'm pretty sure she's unable to install third party software and/or drivers. So please factor that in.
What would be our best solution? Thank you so much for all your help.

(a) format the drive for Mac and install MacDrive on the winsloth machine(s)
(b) format the drive NTFS and install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver on the Mac(s)
