10.4.5 killed my PowerBook.  Anyone else?

Installed update, now I have blank screen on startup, no ability to use firewire target disk mode, can't boot off of disk, apple care says 'send it in'.
Powerbook was A-OK until the update, restarted after the update and now it's dead.
Anyone else have this experience?

10.4.5 did not kill it. It appears it merely reinforced an underlying condition in your machine you had not seen before that was tenuous.
A blank screen at startup sometimes though can be something as simple as a power manager issue which can be fixed with this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
10.4.5 will normally not have any bad side effects. Though a good idea prior to any update is to backup your data:

  • 10 device iTunes account limit is killing me! Anyone else having issuies?

Everybody in my family has an iPhone and iPad and we have a MacBook Pro.  The five of us share one iTunes account, but Apples has implemented an artificially limits of up to 10 devices per id meaning one of devices has to be disabled.  Additionally, my wife plans to add a iPad mini later this year (waiting for retina display).  However it appears Apple doesn't want anyone owning more than 10 apple devices, should I start buying Samsung products as there no further benefit to owning more apple products?

One more bit of information (this is from Apple's support site).
When you turn on iTunes Match or Automatic Downloads, or when you download past purchases on an iOS device or computer, that device or computer becomes associated with your Apple ID. This article describes how to manage these associations.
So, if want to have a device that syncs its content from a computer but does not count against the 10 device limit, you need to avoid:
         - turning on iTunes Match
         - turning on Automatic Downloads
         - download apps from the App Store directly from the device

  • Anyone else killed all Print functionality in 10.4.8?

Installed a new HP Laserjet 4250 in a lab full of various Macs running 10.4.8. Used bonjour to auto setup on all of them and it works fine on all but two. On those two computers (one an iBook and the other a Powerbook) the Print button in the print dialog is now dead. It looks normal but is unclickable. Same goes for the Preview button. Absolutley nothing happens, and the scary part is this doesn't just apply to the new printer it does this when trying to print to all previously installed printers and all newly created printers!
Various usual troubleshooting steps, throwing out prefs, deleting and re-creating printers, (both with the 4250 ppd and the generic ppd) up to and including a full printing system reset, make no difference. The Print button is dead... Long live the Print button!
The workaround is to choose a Preset from the preset menu. When the dialog opens it says "Standard" but it seems the "Standard" preset has not actually been applied, now it must be chosen to be activated. Doesn't matter what preset you choose, you just have to choose something and the buttons will become active again. Not difficult but annoying.
Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone know how to reset the Preset? I've thrown out all the prefs files I can find.
    Thanks.

Too Macs many to choose from...   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I think you left out some details-
The Photosmart 3310 is a USB printer, so to make it a network printer you are sharing it? From a Mac?
I solved the problem, following the tips of greg sahil (thanks a lot!).
After Reset Printing System Print Button is alive again.
Here are some generic troubleshooting steps to try:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for (File>Find) files that start with com.apple.print and delete them all and reboot.
Reset Printing System (new in Tiger) - In Printer Setup, click this menu item found just above Quit Printer Setup.
If there is a downloadable Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X.
Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.
Use a Disk Utility like Disk Warrior to repair the HD, or start from the Install DVD to use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive.

  • Data migration killed my mac. Anyone else?

Please let me know if this has happened to you or anyone else. Started data migration from my DualG5 to my new 8 core, and it fried the hard drive on the G5 after 1/2 hour of connection. Gone. Dead. Kaput. Cofirmed by Apple techs. Un-reformattable. Thanks.

Drives fail, I would be it was a simple coincidence. I would make sure they check the power supply, could have been surge that killed the drive.

  • So my iPhone 5 has now killed my third set of earbud headphones (different manufacturers) is anyone else having this issue?

So my iPhone 5 has now killed my third set of earbud headphones (different manufacturers).
Thank goodness I have been getting the Best Buy product replacement plan each time. The headphones have each lasted about 5 months.
The first set, was the Apple in-ear headphones ($80), and they lasted 3 months. Got a new set as replacment from the Genius Bar and then sold them so I could get a name brand.
Second set was the Logitech - Ultimate Ears 350vi Earbud Headphones ($65) from Best Buy. Broke after 5 months and had the replacement plan.
So next was the Klipsch - Image Earset Model S4i ($100) also from Best Buy. Glad that I also got replacement plan on these too because they just died after 5 months as well.
The right side earbud goes out, and even using the accessability feature in the iPhone to change the balance, I cannot hear the volume.
Anyone else heard of such a thing?
BTW, I have an Otterbox case which covers the earphone port, so I highly doubt that there is any debris in there causing this.
And the headphones are in perfect condition otherwise.

Have you tried restoring your iPad (back uit all up, first!!!) and then adding apps one by one to see which one is the culprit?
Apps crashing on an iOS device could be the result of an app that is hogging memory.  There is only 256 MB of working memory space in an iPad, and an app that demands a lot of memory can cause itself, or other apps, to unexpectedly quit.
The process of finding out which app may have introduced the instability may be a long and tiring process, but once you find the app that starts the trouble, you can contact its developer for assistance, and maybe send feedback on the problems you are having.
Apps can also crash due to corrupted preferences or other user data (probably due to the initial crash).  Restoring your iPad from scratch can assist in resetting such data (but make sure you have backed up your data or moved it via iTunes to somewhere on your Mac or PC so that you can upload them back when your iPad has restored).
Lastly, although unlikely, your iPad may be suffering from a hardware malfunction (eg., bad RAM or flash storage).  Doesn't hurt to take your unit to an Apple service provider for a diagnostic.

  • I am having a problem with Adobe Presenter Video Express locking up my PC.  It requires a complete reboot to kill the program.  Anyone else?

I recently installed Presenter 10 and the Presenter Video Express locks up my PC.  I can't even end with the task manager.  I must force my PC to shut down.  Anyone else having a problem with Video Express?

Hm, that was my silver bullet. Other than doing an uninsall and then installing Presenter again, you may need to reach out to Adobe and see if they can identify what could be causing this.

  • Not in love w/ the new iPhone 3G & thinking of returning it. Anyone else?

Here is my narrative of the iPhone 3G 16gb White… This is focuses on the negative aspects of the phone I have experienced in 24 hours of owning it… I am debating to Return it. Wonder if anyone else has had similar issues or thoughts…
    Disclaimer:
I have had a lot of phones w/ different carriers - the majority being PDA style phones. For the most part the 1st generation iPhone has been fantastic. Realistically every phone is going to have its issues/quarks and not be perfect. But Apple did a good job w/ the iPhone 1st generation (at least in my opinion) and so I am more than eager to see their “improved” version and reward them w/ my continued loyalty.
    Background:
With that said… I walked into an AT&T store and willingly renewed my contract for another 2-yrs. Coming from Verizon after many years – this is quite a sacrifice (AT&T is horrible). When buying the phone from AT&T store I had to go through strict scrutiny to make the purchase (i.e. I had to prove I was the primary account holder, have a credit card, have a driver’s license with picture, and confirm my SS#). In addition, since it was backordered I had to pay in advance w/ knowledge if I were to decide now to return it (even before receiving it) that I would be subject to a 10% restocking fee. So fast forward 7 days of waiting and I finally got the call to pick up the phone…
    *Negative Issues:*
1)While walking in the sun w/ the phone “off” (standby mode)… the sun really exposed the screen LCD traits… I am not sure how to explain this… but you can see the outline of the LCD which is dark, a lighter colored perimeter about .5mm thick around the screen that was lighter colored and inactive when on, and even can clearly see the 3 sensors on the top of the black border near the ear speaker… I don’t recall the 1st iPhone looking like this at all. It looks cheap as a result.
2)Going with what I said before, now I can’t get my eyes off the .5mm thick dead border of screen that is obvious around the iPhone… its distracting and not sure why Apple left it around the screen and did not hide it or put it under the real black border of the phone.
3)Going with the above again, this iPhone is slightly wider than the previous iPhone and has a bigger black border. In essence it makes the screen look smaller when compared to the previous iPhone – although I doubt it is the actual case but rather just an optical illusion.
4)They say the plastic backing made for better grip, feel, and supposed better reception. I however don’t necessarily like the feel, its slightly wider size, and the rounded edges make its feel odd/awkward. However, perhaps I am just too use to the older iPhone and it will take some time.
5)After fully charging the iPhone, I went to a friend’s house (45mins away)… went to eat (90mins)… then to see a movie – Batman (maybe 180mins)… at this point I still had never made an actual call from the iPhone yet and sent (4) texts and did some limited playing around on the web/email and etc… (Remember I had the iPhone 1st generation so I know enough to turn Bluetooth off, WiFi off, even Push off, kept fetch on every 15mins)… so anyway… the iPhone had been on standby majority of time (I even made sure to return to home screen to stop anything from running in background) and the phone was at about 30% battery life. I checked my email for 1 minute and the I got the warning that 20% battery was remaining!
6)Upon careful look at the iPhone I noticed that I had a dead pixel on the upper right of the phone - must have been there but just noticed it now (below the battery icon and to the right of the top icon). This is not unusual I guess in manufacturing and I have complete faith Apple will swap it out for a new iPhone… no big deal… just inconvenient.
7)While home I charged the iPhone again for several hours to full charge. Still have never made a phone call on it. For about 40mins I played around w/ the menus and features… played with a few applications feature (i.e. facebook, AIM, myspace)… went on the web… looked at the GPS map feature… went back to home screen then put the phone in Standby mode… Watched TV for a few hours… looked back at phone to see the batter was 50% dead? Played with phone for 10 mins with music/photo/etc features – put it back to standby mode and watched more TV for 1 hr than looked at the phone to see it at 30% battery level. I fell asleep for a few hours and woke up to see the iPhone had died.
8)One thing I must point out… that throughout my narration/events above… whenever the phone was in standby mode I noticed it was warm to touch. It was not too hot to burn and be unable to use… but noticeably warm as if it were overheating? I thought standby was supposed turn the iPhone basically off (at least a very low power consumption level).
9)Another thing I noticed – perhaps it’s just me… but the screen seems to smudge a lot more – if not easier. The other screen was not perfect but the smudging was manageable. This leads me to believe that there is something different with this screen. Perhaps a different material or so… just something doesn’t seem the same.
10)I have had to fully charge the phone 3 times in 24hours and still have yet to make a single phone call. It would seem that just simply roaming on the 3G network is killing the battery life. Many 3rd party applications also drain the battery. For whatever reason something is running in the background that Apple has designed (maybe just the nature of 3G) that keeps it running even in standby.
*Apple Customer Service told me the following:*
1)If I return the phone for any reason (even if it is defective and etc) I will have to bay 10% restocking fee.
2)The iPhone running on 3G severely limits the phones use… they state it runs 50% less than the 1st generation of iPhone… so 5hrs talk time at most and that they recommend to people to turn off 3G and keep it in Edge. Even in Edge mode –they say the 1st generation iPhone lasts longer.
3)They tell me the weather is another feature that affects the phone – if it’s a hot day than it will be less battery life???
4)They say there has been many reports of iPhone running hot – but it’s a result of the 3G and normal…
5)They say a huge majority of the iPhones 3G have dead pixels and hardware issues...
6)I can swap out the iPhone for a new one under warranty (especially for the dead pixel)… but this will probably make it impossible for me to return to AT&T since the serial numbers would be different… so I would have to live w/ the iPhone 3G at that point...
    Summary:
I am starting to think the iPhone 1st generation wasn't that bad after all. Perhaps I should just wait till much later or possible software improvements before taking advantage of an upgrade... I can always repurchase it later. Overall I am very disappointed by this whole experience due to my high expectations.

I agree... I am trying not to whine... but be helpful to others if they experience the same while get input before I make the decision to return (which I am leaning towards)… It’s still a great phone – but I expected something different. I also have been coming the internet and forums to see what other people think as well to make sure I am not being oversensitive about it. $300 for a 16gb is not buyers remorse kicking in… it’s just I am not sure if I see much of a difference from my perfectly good (8month old) iPhone 1st generation…
But yes… if all iPhone 3G were problematic it would be in the news… so I err on the side that I may be a unique situation or simply did not make a well informed decision when going to 3G.
Still… the idea of turning 3G off to get a full day of use out of an iPhone… even moderate use that most of us would expect w/o charging midway or multiple times is a bit much to swallow.
I don’t want to bash and just looking for peoples reaction. I still really like Apple and the iPhone in general.

  • Is anyone else having conflict with 10.8.2 update and audio files?

I recently updated from 10.8.1 to 10.8.2 (big mistake).  Now my digital interface has all of these random clicks and pops.  Worse yet, when I try and play my audio files (Digital Performer) or ITUNES that music stops, starts, stutters and is basically unlistenable.  Before the update everything ran smoothly.  I talked with the tech support for my digital music application (Digital Performer) and he thinks there is a conflict with the latest Apple update too.  Is anyone else having these problems?
To get back to 10.8.1 do I have to wipe the hard drive and re-install everything?  I use my Mac for music production so this is killing me.  Any ideas?

I once again reloaded 10.8.2, all of the current firewire, USB, and printer drivers (why not make sure those are up to date too, what have I got to lose?).  Checked the cables, the Mac firewire ports etc.  No change.
So I bought a cheap back up firewire drive (Western Digital, My Passport Studio-about $100).  That worked perfectly on the firewire port of my Mac Pro.
I hooked up my MOTU 828 firewire audio interface into the Western Digital's second firewire port, and everything works perfectly.
I wish I had known that daisey chaining devices would solve my problem before I spent $500 on a new firewire interface.
If you are having similar problems with firewire connection, then try daisey chaining through a device that has no problems.  Who knew a solution could be so simple?

  • Has anyone else out there experienced this?

    Hello All,
I was just wandering if anyone else has experienced this.
Day one of owning my new 20" iMac Core Duo everything is
going just fine, I am really liking it. Then I notice something strange.
When scrolling though my start page right dead center of the screen,
the text looks as if it is going though water. I said to myself
your eyes must be tired. But no, I am I seeing it.
I called Apple, Suport has not heard of this one as of yet.
He has me reset the pram that did not work. He recomended
that I bring it in to be looked at. So I brought
it back to where I purchased it because they are an Apple
service center. The service guy told me it would be better
to just get an another one, rather than be out a
computer for maybe three weeks or so. I agreed, because
at that point I had not done much other than set up my
mail accounts. So I took my second new 20" iMac Core Duo
home and set it up. You guessed it, the same thing is happening.
Except this time I notice that when I scroll using the long scroll
bar it happens, but when using the arrows and or the scroll
on the mouse it does not. I think this is a bug, but I can not be sure.
Does anyone know of this and have a fix or opinion?
    TIA,
    Kes

  • E:\ error message.  Has anyone else had this error?

I get the following error as soon as I plug in my Shuffle. I have had this problem almost a year and I've taken my suffle into the store, had it restored several times. It works fine at the Apple store but when I get it home this is what I get. I cant use my shuffle and it's killing me. Even calling Apple tech support was useless... after waiiting on hold for an hour the guy basically said he didn't have any idea how to fix this.
"E:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location."
Has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve this? I appreciate any and all suggestions. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes several times as well.
    Thanks!

You could be having a drive collision with another device on your computer. Connect your Shuffle to a rear port on your computer, then connect your keyboard and mouse. Disconnect ALL other USB devices including printers, thumb drives, scanners, modems, digital cameras, external hard drives, infinite improbability drives, etc. If you are on a network, disconnect from the network.
Now change the drive letter on your iPod. Use something much higher like M or P or Z, unless you have another device that uses this letter:

  • Anyone else having problems with group messages in iOS 7?

Upgrade to iOS7 went fine. Everything worked smoothly up until about 6:30pm Central time. Can't send/receive group messages in iMessage. Anyone else?
Not sure if this is a problem with my phone or iMessage.

It has failed to work on two of my iOS devices. I am using air 2.6.
    This is my code:
    Bookmark = SharedObject.getLocal("bookmarkData", "/");
    if (Bookmark.data == undefined){
         Bookmark.data['lessonIndex'] = 0;

LessonIndex is always 0 at the start of the program. This is a product killing problem. If I cannot resolve this 3 years of work has just been flushed down the toilet.

  • Has anyone else experienced a glitch when making cuts? Many of my cuts slip a frame or two when moved from source monitor to sequence and it started with the latest update

Once I updated to the latest version of Premiere 2014.2 I started experiencing a glitch when my cuts would slip a frame or two. At first it was randomly. Then I had footage I was using that was an .avi file that I converted to .m4v using vlc and now in my Premiere project, are having the greatest difficulty keeping my original cut that I create in my source monitor. When I bring it into my timeline, the new frames are added. When I double click the clip into my source monitor, I see that my original cuts remain, not shifted. Looking back in my timeline, unwanted frames are still there. I have to bring it into my source monitor to guess where the right frame would be to compensate for this. It happens more often with the converted files but still happens to .mp4s as well. I am using a Mac Pro 15-in from Early 2011. Thanks for the advice in advance!

I downloaded and installed the latest iTunes 11.2.1 (1) update yesterday. It appears to have corrected this issue to a large extent: plugging in an iThing to sync no longer seems to cause explosive growth in memory footprint. leaks reports a much slower growth in dead memory:
leaks -nocontext -nostacks iTunes | grep total
Process 27307: 353 leaks for 726488 total leaked bytes.
    20 minutes later:
leaks -nocontext -nostacks iTunes | grep total
Process 27307: 364 leaks for 1256056 total leaked bytes.
20 minutes later, after DLing updated apps and doing another sync:
leaks -nocontext -nostacks iTunes | grep total
Process 27307: 364 leaks for 1256056 total leaked bytes.
Memory allocation started at 70Mb, grew to 200Mb, and appears to have stabilized there.
I'm going to keep an eye on it overnight, but it looks as if this may not be a complete system killer as it was before, at least in my case. In any case, I can highly recommend this latest iTunes update for anyone else experiencing this specific issue. Updating bug 16772016 with this new information.

This happens with both text that are links and graphics that are links. Luckily this problem is easy to fix -- just reload the page and it's fine -- but it is a bit annoying. This happens to me about 2 or 3 times a day. I'm just wondering if anyone else ever has this problem and if anyone knows of a way to fix it?
