10.4.9 Killed al my apps

Did the update in the "proper" way. Repaired prefs etc...
Used the combo update - even though I didn't really need to. The only apps that now work are the Microsoft Office ones.
Looks like I am gonna have to clean install.
The machine that it is on is a iMac G3 500MHz, that was very happily running 10.4.8. I will write more detail when I have tried a clean install.

Have your tried creating a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Kill opened IE, when killing Swing Java App

    I am creating menu items which fire off an IE window to a URL. However, when app is closed the Java process that runs the app blocks waiting for the executed browser to terminate before its shuts itself down. This has potential repercussions as the Java VM hangs around in the mean time, holding resources. Can anyone point me in the direction of how to kill the opened IE window when I kill the java app? I would greatly appreciate any help. :-)
    This is the code in question:
    userManualMenuItem.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
         try
         String url = System.getProperty("EASEUserManualURL");
         Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
         Process p = r.exec("iexplore " + url);
         catch(Exception exception)
              Logger.getLogger().logError("Error opening Intenet Explorer to show EASE user manual.\nCause: " + exception.getMessage());
         });

    Wouldn't it solve the problem if you made the exec() call on a daemon
    thread? I wouldn't advise making exec() calls on the EDT in any case. 1 - You can't call exec() on a Daemon thread. You can call Runtime.exec() inside of a spawned thread that has been marked as a Daemon. This would be preferably rather than launching off of the EventDispatcherThread as itchystratchy stated because....

    I'm sure there's a way you can just launch the user's default browser isn't there?2. - I use http://browserlaunch2.sourceforge.net/ in my current app, it launches whatever application you have associated for that file type to view that file. Also supposedly cross platform. You will not get Process reference to the launched app though. I've tested successfully on Win 2000 and XP up to now but it will allow you to close your Java application and leave any launched browsers open if that is what you are looking for or as you asked for earlier keep a collection of launched Process references and destory them when your user is closing your app.

  • Is there anyway to kill the email app. without rebooting the phone?

    I get emails, but I can't do anything on the screen.  It is totally unresponsive to touch. In addition, my sleep button is broken, so I can't reboot the phone.  (ordered new one, but not getting it for weeks).  Is there anyway to kill the email application without rebooting the phone?

    Thanks, I figured as much. Will I be able to save all my apps and content by importing them to my computer and then uploading them back to my iPad after I upgrade the iOS? If so, do you happen to know if a gen 1 iPad running an iOS 4.2.1 is able to upgrade to an iOS 5? I did read online that the iOS 6 is NOT compatible with it so I want to be sure the iOS 5 is before I go through the trouble...

  • Sharing a physical machine / without killing all my apps

    I've created a user account for a friend who occasionally uses my laptop to surf the web. OS X is telling me that for a second user to login, I need to logout, kill all my open apps, close all files, etc.
    Seems to me I ought to be able to suspend my login session - then allow my friend to login and surf the web - and then resume my session with apps and files open as I last worked on them. How/can I access "suspend login session" and "resume login session" functionality?
    Thanks.

  • New Mac user: how do I kill a fishing app in safari?

    I have a pop-up in Safari. It appears to be a fishing app. I can't kill the window. Closing Safari and rebooting doesn't help. When Safari is reopened, the pop-up is still active.

    Quit Safari (by force if necessary.) Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. That will stop the page from reloading automatically. Select Safari > Preferences > Privacy > "Remove all website data" to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • IPod Touch killed by an app!

    I downloaded a free alarm last night, from App Miner. To test it I set it to ring a minute away from the time. At that exact time my iPod totally crashed and has been continuously trying to half reboot since. The icons, when I get to see them, are scattered around the screen, and I only get the second and third screen, not the one where I could get the settings.
    I left the battery to drain, no change.
    I've tried to sync on my computer, but since it half reboots all the time, it stops the sync. It's heating up quite badly too.
    Help!!!
    Thank you

    Thanks, I tried everything with varying levels of success.
    In the end I managed somehow to get the red slide screen and rebooted on iTunes roughly 15 times before there were enough bits of a sync to start contemplating a restore.
    I did the restore which took a couple of hours of crashing and restarting and have been slowly reinstalling the stuff I had before. Although my notes, calendar, some apps I paid for and contacts went "poooooof", never to be seen or synced again, I'm pleased the blasted thing is still alive.
    I'm a bit worried about what crash is going to come next. I was just trying to set up an alarm for the morning! App Miner won't load now, maybe that's the app that caused the issue and not the alarm. In any case Alar me is the only decent free one that allows your own MP3.
    One thing is for sure, my other half got a few years' worth of "Apple is rubbish" ammunition, that would be the most peeving thing of all! lol! As if PCs didn't die, ever!

  • Does killing the AppStore app stops automatic app updates?

    I stopped the AppStore app on my iPhone, removed it from the recents list and haven't opened it for a while. During this time, no app updates came in. Then yesterday I opened up AppStore again and it found 37 updates. I thought that stopping and removing the app from the recent apps list does not interfere the updates from coming, am I wrong?

    It is not necessary to have the App Store open for updates. It appears this is an anomaly on your phone. You can try to just power the phone off/on and see if that helps. Your last step might be to perform a reset, holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. This will make the phone reboot. The only way to tell then if it makes any difference is if you receive an app update.

  • How to kill autostart of apps

    The phone has certain apps that start automatically when the phone is switched on and even after exiting the apps, they remain working. How to amend the settings of these apps so that they dont start automatically??these include some games and some apps that came installed with the phone.
    oceanspray

    Whenever you exit an app use the Back key instead of home, also stay away from taskillers, task managers as this will close those apps BUT it will drain your battery and it will create other issues.

  • Mail app:  copy and past in draft folder kills the mail app every time

    Create an email and save it (instead of sending it), the go to the draft folder, copy that draft (command,c) and try to paste it (command v) to create multiple versions of that email and the mail app dies every time. I do this to create multiple copies for mass emails which brings me to problem 2, the Mail app cannot send to multiple email addresses.

    This has been really bothering me. I came up with this solution and have tested it. I hope it works for you too.
    Create your first e-mail
    Save it to your Drafts folder, in the usual way (in whichever account you're going to send from)
    Left-drag this e-mail FROM your drafts folder on to your DESKTOP
    Double click the icon it makes
    When it opens, from the Mail.app menu bar click Message > Copy to > click on the Drafts folder you want your e-mail to be saved in
    The e-mail that you double clicked from the desktop should still be open
    Now use this key-combination alt-⌘-T and you'll copy another version of the same draft e-mail to your drafts folder
    Repeat the key-combination for as many versions of the e-mail you need - you can work at some speed, it keeps up - no crashes. They will all go to your Drafts folder in the same way the Copy/Paste feature used to work
    Once you have as many copies in there as you need, double click each one from your drafts folder, add the recipient address and any customisation and SEND!
    This problem appears in quite a few threads on the Apple forum, so I will cross post.
    I've not seen this solution anywhere else, or anything similar.
    I'm happy for you to share this, once you've tested it, and you can follow on http://twitter.com/philipchapman

  • How to unload/kill rmiRegistry if app was terminated abnormally

    Hello,
    I use the following method in coding to [1] launch the RMIRegistry to listen on port PORT, [2] Exports the remote object to make it available to receive incoming calls, [3] Bind the service name to the Registry
          int PORT = 1101;

    Thanks in advance!

    I would like to know what's the difference between
    LocateRegistry.getRegistry(PORT) and
    LocateRegistry.createRegistry(PORT)
    It's all there in the Javadoc.
    Can the "Registry"-type object be passed-to
    UnicastRemoteObjecdt.unexportObject()?As it says in the Javadoc, Registry extends Remote.
    'application terminated abnormally" means the
    application was terminated by CTRL-C, or any
    exceptions raised casuing the application to
    terminate itself.I can only assume that you are catching some application exception and trying to restart the whole thing including the Registry from within the same JVM. If you are doing this and starting the Registry gives you 'ObjID in use' then obviously you don't have to start it.
    If on the other hand the JVM containing the Registry and your application has completely exited, you can't get 'ObjID in use'.

  • 8.02 killed all my apps, DONT UPGRADE!!!

    Go I don't know what the hell has happened. I upgraded to
    8.02 of Dreamweaver and now any for with a update or insert record
    item on it is destroyed. If I open a page that container a form to
    insert into a database, make any edit and save it, it tries (and a
    emphasize "TRIES") to rewrite the code for the insert record
    behaviour. But somehow it remove all line breaks so the code is in
    one big paragraph and I have to go through and break it up
    manually.
    Then if there is a "File Field" in the form, it just does not
    insert at all any more. It gives the error :
    Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e57'
    [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]Invalid string or
    buffer length
    /admin/photos.asp, line 63
    or simply does not work or insert anything.
    I have now removed Dreamweaver 8.02 completly and am
    reinstalling 8.0 and all my extensions again.
    Anyone know what happened ???

    Does any one know how to fix problem with MS Access Driver & SQL Server 2005?
    Hi,
    I am trying to design registration form for my web site but it is not working for me. Why do I have problem with ODBC Microsoft Access Driver? I always end up on the following error page when I try my registration form.
    The error pages information:
    Technical Information (for support personnel)
    Error Type:
    Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80040E57)
    [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Invalid string or buffer length
    /brigma/SearchApps/registration.asp, line 40.
    And I always end up on the following error page when I try my registration form using SQL.
    Technical Information (for support personnel)
    Error Type:
    Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80040E09)
    [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server] The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'tbl_SignUp', database 'SearchAdbase', schema 'dbo'.

  • 10.4.9 killed my DVD app

    After the update, DVD 4.6 has mysterously vanished. Upon insert the DVD will appear on the desktop, but will not launch. CD's play fine.
    System preferences>CD/DVD shows a setting of "IGNORE" on insert. I know this was not the choice before 10.4.9, because it would always launch. The only option to change "ignore", is "run script" or "choose another application." Unfortuantely, DVD 4.6 is not even listed. Via spotlight, no DVD program exists.
    OK, so I downloaded DVD 4.6 from Apple. But the installer tells me that "a newer version already exsists" and I cannot continue. WHAT?!
    What are my options now? Are there any files I can dump so the installer will continue with a DVD 4.6 load?
    Thanks.

    What does “DVD 4.6 has mysterously vanished” mean? Has DVD Player disappeared from the /Applications/ folder, or do you mean something else?
    Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
    Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
    The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
    After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the update using the combo installer:

  • I am the only one having problems with private browsing. When I go from private browsing to regular it gets stuck and I have to get out and kill the safari app so safari can work again

  • Do I need to use an app killer on my new iPhone4s?

    Hi there
    I have just moved f rom an android phone where you had to use an app killer to stop apps constantly running and draining your battery and your web usage, do I need it on the iPhone?

    colby85 wrote:
    Nope, on your home screen of the iphone, double tap the home button and you will find the apps running in the backround.
    That's not correct. Unless the app is specifically designed to run in the background(very few are), NONE of the apps shown there are actually running.

  • Killing Java app from C

    Ive seen this question posted before, but never found a good answer. I am invoking a JVM from a legacy C app (via JNI_CreateJavaVM) and I want to be able to end the JVM and have the C app continue. The problem is that a call to System.exit() from inside the java app causes the entire native process (not just the JVM) to be killed. A call to DestroyJavaVM() does not unload the
    JVM (as it claims it does in the API documentation).
    Currently, the Java code calls dispose and System.gc (for good measure) on exiting, although this doesnt completely kill the java app. If the user wishes to invoke another Java app, the C code uses JNI_GetCreatedVMs to see if one already exists, and if so uses AttachThread (or GetEnv) to hook to the existing JVM to run the new Java app. The problem with this is with complicated GUI apps, the machine soon hits a wall, I guess because of un-gc'd stuff laying around.
    Is there a way to kill the app from java without using System.exit or is there a way to unload the JVM from the C app?

    Unfortunately I am running into the same issues using JDK1.4 on Win32. Basically the call to jvm->DestroyJavaVM() is NEVER returning. This seems to mainly be a problem when you use classes which require a native class loader to load native libraries. EX: classes which use System.loadLibrary("some native library"). Has anyone found a workaround to allow us to stop the jvm from the native side when these are present?
    Also if anyone in interested - this is the exact c++ code I am currently using:
        if(vm != NULL) {
             * Detach the current thread from the vm so that it appears to have
             * exited when the process has detatched from the dll.
            if (vm->DetachCurrentThread() != 0) {
                MessageBox(NULL,"Could not detatch the Java Virtual Machine","DEBUG Info",MB_OK+MB_ICONEXCLAMATION);
            MessageBox(NULL,"Try to destroy the VM","DEBUG Info",MB_OK+MB_ICONEXCLAMATION);
            vm->DestroyJavaVM();
            vm = NULL;
        MessageBox(NULL,"JVM destroyed successfully","DEBUG Info",MB_OK+MB_ICONEXCLAMATION);Basically all the calls succeed except the vm->DestroyJavaVM(); including the call to detatch the current thread from the VM! Am I missing something obvious? Is this a known bug? Anyone know any workarounds? Aany and all constructive comments are welcome.
