10.5.3 incompatible with Macally IceKey driver
I updated to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2 but there were serious problems, including the Menubar disappearing after watching a full-screen movie. I rebooted into Single User Mode in an attempt to see if there was some problem, and I was presented with screens of error messages. There was no way to run fsck, because every key press resulted in many lines of error messages -- including one about the power manager kernel. Ugh!
The first thing that occurred to me was the possibility of a problem with the only kext I had installed, the Macally IceKey driver. Yup - removing it resolved all the problems. Re-downloading it and reinstalling reintroduced the conflicts, and removing it once again results in a nicely functioning system.
The date of the installer .pkg that causes the problem is 10/29/2007 - the latest they have on their website as of today.
Moral of the story: all kernel extensions from third party vendors could be a source of trouble in system updates. I'll miss having access to the volume up and volume down keys, but I think I'd rather learn to like controlling the volume from the Menu bar than fooling with kernel extensions again.
Oh, and be prepared for Time Machine to spend a very long time backing up your system after such a large update - your machine may not shut down for more than 30 minutes if you haven't allowed Time Machine to do its thing before you try to shut down. The "frozen" screen is a bit scary, as there are no indications that this is what is occurring. Now I appreciate the nose from my backup drive that clued me in to what was happening.
Thanks for the heads up. However it's much easier to just blame Apple when something goes bad don't you know.

The Macally Icekey driver has a serious problem.
It was evidently built with some debugging code, because it floods the console log with multiple lines of debug messages for every keystroke.
This not only makes it hard to find things in the console log, it makes it very difficult to use the console because of the messages. For example, booting to single user mode you cannot see the command line because of the spew.
The messages look like this:
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel test handlereport
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 0 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 1 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 2 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 3 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 4 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 5 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 6 position is 0, len = 8
5/1/09 03:47:43 kernel the 7 position is 0, len = 8
That's what a single keystroke generates in the console log.
It also makes the machine sluggish at times, or can cause missed keystrokes.
Macally seems to have no interest in fixing this and from what I have read tells users who email them "Sorry, we have no plans to fix this."
However, some users in a thread last year reported that the older Icekey drivers did not have this problem and worked much better.
Does anyone know how to get one of those old drivers or where they might be stored?
Again, Macally is no help, and this is a pretty serious issue. I paid $50 for this keyboard and I like it, but if I can solve this problem I'll end up having to toss it.
Thanks.
Message was edited by: cshappleI really don't like laptop keyboards as much as full travel mechanical anyway, and rubber-dome keyboards hurt my hands except for the very best of them.
I did try the new Apple keyboards, and I think they are far too light and small, and the key shapes and layout is pretty terrible. I realize a lot of people like them, but I don't like them.
Also, when I played with the new Apple keyboards, they did require drivers and the drivers were buggy, so I'm not sure what you mean about no driver issues.
I have heard that the Logitech Dinovo series has a little more key travel, but is otherwise a mechanical scissor setup, so I might try one of those eventually.
It's pretty silly for a keyboard to need a driver in 2009. All of the keys can be added to a standard decoded matrix without a driver.
I would like to see Apple make their aluminum keyboards heavier, larger, and with a more standard key shape and layout, and add another 1-2mm of key travel. That would sell me and a lot of other people.
Oh and please, no drivers... -
. . . was wondering: Would you happen to know if, < Adobe CS5 Design Premium > in compatible or incompatible with MS WIN8.1? I bought a new Dell XPS 9530 -- with NO CD drive. I copied my CS5 install disk to a Flash Drive, then ran the "install" on my new computer. I had the ownership S/N, so-o-o-o, CS5 installed and "seems" to respond well. PROBLEM: PhotoShop. The Menu Bar, the Commands, the Tool Bar, the Color Palettes, and etc., etc., are all real small on my display -- I would estimate they are about 1/3 of the normal size. Same problem with Illustrator. I've made all the Screen Resolution and Print-Size settings and nothing remedies the small display. (My working page is fine; it's just the display that is REAL tiny!!) Can you help me? Do you have any suggestions for me to try? Should I re-install from the internet? Am I forced to upgrade my application? I appreciate any comments you might have. Thanks. -- Dennis

or this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902330 -
Configuration:
Local Client: Macbook Pro 8,1 (Dual boot 10.8.2 & Windows 7 x64)
Local WLAN AP: WiFi dual band access points (I do not have admin access to)
ISP: TWC Road Runner
External VPN Server: Poptop PPTPD server v1.3.4 (I do have admin access to)
Problem:
There is a Macbook BCM4331 driver incompatibility that spans across both OS X and Windows 7 when connecting to a PPTP VPN through a local dual band access point.
The same Macbook (booted into either OS X 10.8 or Windows 7) cannot maintain a ping/connection to the PPTP server when connected to a local dual band (2.4GHZ/5GHZ) WiFi access point.
Macbook connects and remains connected to the PPTP server (as shown in connection status,) but no traffic will pass through VPN once the connection has "dropped" internet traffic. Flood ping to the VPN server initially replies with expected <30ms ping time. Once internet traffic is passed across VPN, ping fails and traffic stops completely.
• Any other wifi client machines & OS using same dual band AP can connect to VPN and maintain flood ping to PPTP server and pass all traffic or even split tunnel. I've tested different computers using Windows XP, Windows 7, Android 4.1, iOS 6.0.1 etc. No problems at all.
• Macbook can maintain flood ping and pass traffic to PPTP server when connected to a different standard 2.4GHZ access point.
• Macbook can maintain flood ping and pass traffic to PPTP server when connected via Ethernet on same LAN as dual band AP's.
• Macbook can maintain connection/ping by disabiling MPPE encryption on the PPTP server. Running an unencrypted VPN is not an option for me however.
• Macbook can maintain connection/ping whenn booted into Windows 7 natively and disabling 2.4 band through Device Manager > Advanced tab > Disable bands > "Disable 802.11g/b".
To fix this problem, I would propose that Apple allow OS X users to disable 2.4GHZ in OS X. Doing so should allow PPTP + MPPE when connected via dual band routers as it does in Windows 7. I think asking them to rewrite the driver for OS X & Windows 7 is asking too much.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2197122?start=0&tstart=0I haven't heard anything back yet. I will update if I do.
Being that Apple takes pride in selling their own computers and writing their own drivers & software to match, the Macbook with OS X 10.8 should be a super polished, finely tuned machine. It's aggravating when I can't do relatively simple things which I can do on any other device & OS:
If you've read the first post, you know it's not possible to pass PPTP + MPPE on the Macbook Pro 8,1 with OS X 10.6+ or Windows 7 when connected to a dual band AP.
OS X also imposes a 130mbps limit on the 2.4Ghz band. I have no problems connecting @ 450mbps on 2.4Ghz with Windows 7. The range is much better than 5Ghz as expected when there aren't any neighboring AP's for interference. I've also never received interference with Bluetooth devices.
There have been a couple times where some things don't plain work right and the flexibility to fix them as an "Apple knows better than the user" policy is restricted. In most cases, perhaps Apple does know better. In this case, there is definitely a problem with the BCM4331 driver. If it "just worked" this topic wouldn't have been created. -
When I try to open Mail from the launchbar it won't open and comes up with a window saying it may be incompatible with this version of OS X.
What is the answer to fix this?!Backup for safety on at least two reliable drives.
Reinstall using the combo update at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1746
You would be wise to quit all apps, disconnect all peripherals and preferably delete all email accounts before upgrading. -
Time Machine no longer working with External Hard drive
Hello
I have an iMac 24 and an Iomega 500Gb drive. TimeMachine was working fine when I first set it up over Firewire. I then bought a MacBook and tried to use a the same drive to run separate Time Machine backups. I aborted it when I ran out of time as I was going away.
The iMac and the MacBook no longer recognise the Iomega drive as valid. I get an error about the drive being read only.
How can I resolve or reset this to get the iMac backups working? I'll probably buy a portable drive for the MacBook backups.
Thanksmosey,
Unfortunately, your going to have to reformat the drive. There is no fix for the "Read Only" issue at this time.
*_How Should a Time Machine Hard Disk be Prepared?_*
For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve at least double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
Procedure
Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
Launch Disk Utility.
It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
Select the "Partition" tab.
For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Chose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups.)
Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
Click "OK".
Click "Apply".
Now chose the level of secure erase you desire. (More passes means more time)
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups.
Let us know if this was helpful.
Cheers! -
XBMC freezes with free Radeon driver and VDPAU (Mesa 3D 9.2)
Hello!
I am currently setting up a HTPC with AMD A4-5300 with the integrated Radeon HD 7480D. To avoid the trouble with the fglrx driver, I would like to use the free xf86-video-ati driver.
I thought this would be no problem since the update to Mesa 3D 9.2 (Package version 9.2.0-1) yesterday. This should have brought support for the UVD in the GPU when at least kernel 3.10 is installed (3.10.9-1 is).
According to this Gentoo Wiki page, the Aruba GPU should use TAHITI_uvd.bin as the UVD firmware, the file exists in /usr/lib/firmware/radeon.
But now to the problems with XBMC (12.2-5). When I boot up the system, select a for example x264 encoded video file it plays fine most of the time. Low CPU load indicates that hardware decoding actually is used. When I then stop the video and simply select it again in the file list, XBMC freezes. Restarting works most of the time to workaround the problem, so after a reboot XBMC manages to play the video most of the time.
Sometimes it even freezes on the first attempt to start the movie. After just restarting X11, XBMC was never able to play a video file.
Here is a portion of the logfile where a film is played, then stopped and then selected again, causing a freeze:

With Hardware Acceleration disabled in XBMC none of the problems described above occurs.
So does anybody here know how to approach this problem? I'd really like to use Arch on the HTPC. Is this a problem with Arch or shall I look for the cause more on the XBMC side?
Last edited by And1G (2013-08-29 18:05:38)And1G wrote:OK, for everyone who is interested, this problem is most likely caused by XBMC relying on the OpenGL extension GL_NV_vdpau_interop which is not available with the Radeon driver.
I'll go over to the XBMC forums with the issue, I hope they can help.
I followed your from the heise newsticker to here, as you have some fully wrong information.
xbmc implements as the first at all the GL vdpau interop. Which is used to use surfaces in both the decoder, vdpau and the presenter OpenGL. But - we still have all the "pixmap code" in place. So on Radeon vdpau, where this interop is not supported, we render into a pixmap and transfer that result afterwards back to OpenGL.
This works perfectly fine with e.g. mplayer - as the pixmap is the finished result, no need to transfer it any further. Xbmc is something special, cause we are fully 3D - radeon driver (be it GL part or whatever) is damn slow here, cause performance currently just sucks when rendering to pixmap and from there back to OpenGL.
We are in contact with all the AMD OSS devs to find a solution here.
Btw. nvidia ION-2 is fast enough for 1080p50 _with_ the pixmap approach, so you can imagine, that we currently search the issue somewhere else - especially in the AMD drivers.
Edit: On my current radeon vdpau oss tests with xbmc - mesa fills up with memory, leaks and dies after 20 minutes .... not a good situation to start anything.

Create PDF 1.1 is "incompatible with Firefox 35.0"
Hi all,
I'm using Acrobat Pro X and Firefox on Windows 7 x64. The Create PDF plugin (version 1.1) has been very useful, and has been working fine for a good while, even when Firefox recently upgraded itself to version 35.0.
But recently my main hard drive started to fail, so I've replaced it and reinstalled all my apps. But now in Firefox the Create PDF plugin is greyed out, with a note that it's incompatible with this latest version of the browser. I've tried uninstalling Firefox and rolling back to a previous version where I knew the plugin was working, but it's still greyed out. I don't know why, nor how to fix it. (I groan at the thought of having to reinstall my OS and applications all over again.)
I may have missed it, but I can't find any option on the Adobe site to download an update to the plugin -- assuming one exists that still functions with Firefox, and is available for download.
Can anyone help resolve this issue, please?Yes, Acrobat X is updated to the latest version (10.1.13), but unfortunately the Create PDF plugin isn't actually updated. It's still version 1.1.
If other people have a more recent version of the plugin while running Acrobat Pro X, I'd really appreciate hearing how they got it. -

I can enter a DE through the login just fine after a clean startup or a reboot. It's just that after I logout using Ctrl Alt Backspace, it just keeps crashing and won't bring me to the login screen again.

tried to update 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 get un expected error at cleanup....have tried several times with no success..after failed try mail will not open because the mail is now incompatible with 10.7.4......HELP
2009 MacBook Pro eh? It looks like your hard drive has failed. Three years is pretty standard. Often, then only hint you have is catastrophic failure.
If you put the old hard drive into an external enclosure or similar device, you may still be able to migrate your data from it. Just because it won't boot doesn't mean you can't still read from it. Still, I wouldn't keep trying it. As long as you are buying a new hard drive, may as well get sometime to use with Time Machine too. -
I have paid and downloaded LION and want to update my IMAC, can i just run install and it keep photos settings etc from Snow Leopard or is a full reinstall with wiped hard drive, anyone have any experience of this and do i need to run a backup beforehand?
Always backup your important data before upgrading to a new Mac OS X.
Lion doesn't erase the drive but better to be safe than sorry.
And run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Verify and if necessary repair the startup disk before upgrading.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Before upgrading read here > Lion upgrade questions and answers: Apple Support Communities

Vista SP1 clash with Intel display driver (lgdkmd32.sys)
The ThinkPad X61s and various versions of the T series come with a version of the Intel display driver (lgdkmd32.sys) that is incompatible with Vista SP1. If we have that driver, Windows Update won't give us SP1. And no newer driver for the X61s seems available. Any news on when we can expect a fix for this problem?
Message Edited by O_Govinda on 03-26-2008 03:13 AMYes, same problem with my T61 because the version of display driver (lgdkmd32.sys) is 7.14.10.1329, which falls in the following range of Intel Display drivers that Microsoft would not offer Vista SP1 to systems with such device drivers.
Display drivers
Intel Display
• For x86-based computers: Igdkmd32.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403
• For x64-based computers: Igdkmd64.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403
Please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343 cause 5 and method for cause 5 for more details.
Hope this problem will be solved soon. -

Diane,
I have added very few apps to my G5. The majority of my time is spent editing photos with PhotoshopCS3. I have software updates set to run weekly and have always kept them up to date. I really believe it's a disk permissions issue...but repairing them doesn't help.
*+Upon installation, I used Archive and Install.+* While I agree that Erase and Install may sound like a good idea, it makes me nervous. I do have everything backed up on a bootable CMS drive, but I'm a photographer and was hoping to not have to erase the G5.
Yes, as I mentioned in the original post, I've downloaded and installed the Airport firmware update. And all software is up to date.
All was working just dandy before the upgrade. Unfortunately now it's sounding like I may have to erase my hard drive and install fresh.
If I do that, is it just a matter then of dragging my photos from the backup disk to the G5? And documents? Etc?? The thought of getting all my photos and important information back on the G5 seems a bit staggering. -
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 is incompatible with windows 10 upgrade message
My system is incompatible with the new windows 10 upgrade. Get the following message "NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 , The display manufacturer hasn't amde your display compatible with windows. check with the manufacturer for support
It's true that card isn't compatible with Windows 10 and from my research it will never be compatitble. You can still upgrade to Windows 10 though Microsofts website though and follow my work around below. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Once you upgrade you'll notice your screens resolution will be screwed up atleast it was for me. Thats because it's using the generic Windows display driver since the driver for the graphics card isn't compatible. There is a way to get around it though. I will warn you now it's not perfect since the driver I'm linking is for Windows 8.1. Your icons on your desktop and in the taskbar will refresh every couple minutes. But you will be able to set your computer to the correct resolution. So it's kind of a tradeoff. Here's the link to the driver you'll need http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/56378 So far so good besides the refreshing icons. Edit: The icons stopped refreshing and no other issues.

How long should Loading Installation Information take with a formatted Drive?
The OS was corrupted when installed over an incompatible 10.6 version of Centrify. It should have been uninstalled prior to installing Lion, so I was hoping to do a fresh install without restoring anything related to older applications to sort out network hang conditions. Restoring from Time Machine does not appear to offer selective restore in terms of Apps and Users.
I am now waiting for more than hour at a window over the prompt "To set up the installation of Mac OS X 10.7, click Continue" that says:
To download and restore Mac OS X, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple. This just has a throbber spinning in front of the message
Loading Installation Information... " I have about 16mbit/sec Internet connectivity, how long should this phase of the reinstall operation take?
When I first installed Lion, a bootable image of the initial version of Lion was made that was able to restore Lion to an erased drive in about 28 minutes. It seems that image has been disabled by changes the MacBook boot flash. Is there a way to be better prepared, and how long should this process take starting with an erased drive?Sorry to hear that saga. This time download another Lion installer from MAS by going to purchases and holding the option key. When downloaded it will appear in /Applications. Save it off to several different places on your disk and off.
Also, consider keeping bootable clones with SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
That way if you have a problem, just boot up from the clone and keep on working until you're ready to fix.
