10.5.4 and ARD 3.2

Ever since I updated to 10.5.4, i am having a GANG of issues with ARD.
Anyone else experiencing any problems?!
A couple of quick examples:
It's takes FOREVER to launch!
When I try to "Observe" more than one computer, all I get is a blank grey screen with the ball of death.
I've deleted ever preference i can find. I've even reset the entire application.
Nothing seems to work.
Is ARD even compatible with 10.5.4?
Any help would be nice.
Thanks!

ARD 3.2 works fine for me with 10.5.4 on my admin system (I don't at this time have a significant number of Leopard client systems). You might try removing ARD using the instructions here and then reinstalling.
Hope this helps.

  • ARD 3 and ARD 2.x and an 87 year old mother!

Here is the deal. My 87 year old mother has an eMac and a DSL connection, no router. Before we moved her to a new city and different DSL provider, I could control her Mac with my G5 and ARD 2.2. Now, I have a new G5 and a MacBook Pro with ARD 3.0 and mom still has her eMac. I can see her name, and get the ip address, but that is it. We have all the settings on both machines on (but would like to have a checklist to be sure we are accurate), and the ARD timesout and won't connect. I know this has to be something very simple, but I have no idea and my mom isn't getting any younger! We are about to buy two more Macs, one for each of her sisters (ages 70 and 90) so they can all iChat. But guess who gets to watchover all three?
We are all at the end of our ropes with this problem as I have tried since spring to get this fixed. Certainly appreciate any step-by-step advice.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Just out of curiosity, does no one have an answer to this issue? I can't believe out of this entire forum of experts nobody has a suggetion.

  • ARD 3.1 and ARD Not Active on Clients

I have ARD 3.1 installed on a PPX X-serve running 10.4.8. The client I am managing are core duo minis also running version 3.1 and 10.4.8.
Lately when ever I try to see the clients throuh ARD I get the message that ARD isn't active on the client or the client is offline.
I tesetd this on site and ADR is enabled on all the clients and all had working ip connections.
    Any ideas where to start?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Yea same here....our machines (250) can be sitting at the login windows and ARD is running and I can do pretty much anything with them that I want using ARD on them. Thats on a local network though....not using wireless, not that should matter though. Also using ARD 3.1.
When you have users logging off at the clients ARD Agent or something with ARD shutsdown for a moment until the machine gets back to the login window and then the Agent should restart and be waiting for ARD like normal again.
    Thanks,

  • ARD 3.2 and ARD 1.2 Mac OS 9.22

Hi I have got an Intel iMac running ARD 3.2 and want to remote control an old iMac G3 running Mac OS 9.22 and ARD 1.2. It recognises the G3 and when I try to authenticate it says the password is invalid when it should work. Is it just not possible to connect the two or is there some other way of controlling my G3 from my intel iMac?
    Nick

It sounds so complicated. I'll try it later and let you know how it went.
Dealing with networks from outside (whether from the Internet or dealing with wireless) often is indeed complicated. If you are indeed trying to connect to this system from the Internet (and hence from some other location and having to connect through a router), take a look at this web page:
    http://www.starkpr.com/ard.htm
    It may help.
If I'd posted a new topic, someone would've told me I should've searched for previous threads/posts before I posted!
Suggesting that you search for previous posts doesn't mean that you have to, or should, tag your question onto another thread. You're free to start a new topic, and in fact it's recommended that you do so rather than tagging a new issue/question onto another poster's topic. What people mean by such recommendations is that you try and see if the question has already been addressed before you post. In probably the vast majority of the issues that arise, the subject has already been addressed, so if you can find a previous thread, you save yourself time waiting for an answer and others from going over the same ground yet again. It's not always possible - sometime your issue is different, and sometimes it's just not easy to find previous posts - but it's always worth trying (and if you say you tried when you do post, it should keep people off your back). In any case, posting to a thread that's so old (as this one is) often won't get your post seen at all, and we don't want your issue to go unaddressed just because no one sees it.
    Regards.

  • 10.6.8, ARD admin 3.5 and ARD 3.5.1 REPORTING BROKEN

    Dear all,
Have just upgraded to ARD admin 3.5 on our admin machines (10.6.8) and ARD 3.5.1 on our client machines (10.6.8).
We are able to control and observe all client computers, send Unix commands but none of the reporting (software versions, file search) methods are working - the report for the client computer never gets past 'Transferring report'.
This was all working just fine using ARD admin 3.4 and 3.4 client.
Have tried deleting plist files (server and client), rebuilding prefs, re-adding client computers but nothing has resolved the issue we are having (same on a number of admin machines).
It looks like Apple haven't done enough testing with this version of Apple Remote Desktop.
    Jason

    Hi Dave,
While I appreciate your response, it is thoroughly unhelpful to the people like myself who are having this problem. It almost sounds like you're a salesman for other products. I know that's not the case (considering how many "points" you have). However, I'm under the impression that ARD does get updates, and even if a single developer is working on the product, that doesn't change the fact that apple advertises the ability to Generate Reports.
If Apple advertises the ability, then I don't suggest anyone give up on the issue by throwing up your hands, as you suggest.
Let me first say that I've been using ARD to generate reports for ~40 computers without problems for quite a long time. It has become an integral part of my workflow.
Anyway, enough of me taking out my frustration on you, here is what I've tried (to no avail... yet. I'm going to solve this if it kills me or I have to reformat my computer) :
    1. Repairing permissions on the clients and the server using diskutilty. This would have been a solution since I could have rolled it out via the command line. But no dice.
    2. Uninstalling & reinstalling ARD admin (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577). I'm unable to fully install , however, since my user list is automatically repopulated.
    3. Restarting the service on clients using kickstart (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370). This changes nothing.
I've checked the console, and I did (before removing ARD via KBHT2577) get the error "Encryption key not found for client." I no longer get that error. I've got clients on 10.6, 10.5, and 10.4. So I've tried generating reports for each to see if it affects only certain versions. When connecting to 10.5 and below, I get the error "legacy packet not allowed 111 from 127.0.0.1."
The weird thing is that prior to uninstalling the ARD Admin program, clients were hanging on "transferring report" and I was seeing "Encryption key not found for client." in the console.
Now, after reinstalling, clients are hanging on "generating report." There is no error in the console.
Just giving my input of what I've tried, and what I'm seeing. Sorry if I came off as rude to you, Dave.

  • Screen Sharing and ARD broken

    Hi,
I have 10.9.4. I had remote management switched on and it was working fine.
I installed ARD 3.7 and started it up fine and it was running fine allowing me to do all what I needed.
I also need to remote to this Mac and so set the preference in ARD to allow control whilst the app was running. Thats when it went pear shaped.
It suddenly stopped allowing remote access to the machine.
I now have to be physically at the unit. I have removed ARD and all the files it has added and switched off all screen sharing and Remote Management in Sys Pref. Restarted and switched on Remote Management again.
I can still not access the machine remotely (i.e. screen sharing).
When trying to use screen sharing on the Mac itself to remote onto another machine I get the following in Console.
20/08/2014 15:08:23.459 Screen Sharing[1422]: unable to get server port

I can ssh to the machine fine, just not screen share (VNC).
Any help to fix allowing VNC to the machine would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Keith

    Further,
I have run a port scan and confirmed that port 5900 is open.
When using COTVNC it sort of sits there trying to connect but doesn't show the screen. If whilst it is trying I switch off Remote Management then COTVNC instantly throws up the error that screen sharing is not enabled.
Thus I am deducing that the actual VNC server of the os is goosed.

  • New iMac and ARD 2

I just received my brand new iMac in my classroom. I used a copy of Remote Desktop that I had from my previous machine. I installed ARD 2 and now the computer will no longer boot up. I am stuck at a white (grayish) screen and can't do anything. Any advice?

Ok I am now able to start the machine but when I try to run Remote Desktop I get an error that tells me to run Software Update cause my software is out of date. I have done this but it finds no updates. Any ideas or is ARD 2 just not going to work for me?

  • Using both ARD 3.1 admin and ARD 2.2 admin - troublesome issue

I have searched and found various posts on this, but no comprehensive thread. Many who have used ARD 3 have encountered the "This Task Will Fail - Old Remote Desktop Client Software" when trying to perform tasks on clients with old (pre-3.0) software. It seems a simple task to upgrade to the latest client software, and it is quite easy.
But doesn't anybody else find it odd that if you use ARD Admin 2.2, you can perform all those tasks on computers with the 2.x client software, including copying files, etc. What logical sense does it make that the latest version 3.x admin cannot perform those tasks on a 2.2 client that its predecessor could? You can't even send a simple Unix task such as to repair permissions.
If you put those two together, you may just come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter, because you can just upgrade the client software with a click, and I thought the same thing, at first. But there is a situation I find myself in that is extremely annoying.
I have used ARD 2.2 in my own consulting business for several years with small clients, home offices, etc. But now I was issued a MBP with ARD 3.1 at my day job, so I was able to get rid of my Powerbook G4 I used in my consulting and transfer the ARD 2.2 to my iMac G5 at home. I keep all my personal files on that iMac, because with my router conifigured properly, I can access it from the MacBook Pro from almost anywhere. The iMac retrieves and stores all my personal e-mail, photos, etc.
Without even thinking, I updated the iMac to version 3 client as soon as I got the first "task will fail" error. I then, however, found out that ARD 2.2 Admin will not launch if the same computer has ARD 3 client software-- completely unusable. I had to uninstall the 3.1 client files from the iMac and reinstall 2.2 admin, which puts the 2.2 client on it. So now when I am home at night or connecting from elsewhere, I am limited to only controlling/viewing the iMac. Well, I paid good money for 2.2 admin shortly before version 3.0 came out, and I could not get any upgrade pricing. I don't need anything more than the features 2.2 offers for my side work, so another $299 would be wasted money for the 10-user version. I just think it's unbelievable that the 3.x client disables 2.x admin, and 3.x admin cannot do anything other than control the screen of 2.x clients, not even send a message or lock screen-- again, these are things that 2.2 admin can do with no trouble at all. A 3.x version unable to do things a 2.x version was able to easily do? Does that make sense other than to force an upgrade?
I like 3.1, I use some of the advanced features that 2.2 doesn't have, but this has become quite annoying. More annoying, in fact, than all the failed attempts to upgrade the client software of some of the older Macs at work - no error message, no warning it would fail because the Macs were using 10.3.8 or lower-- just a never-ending task running. I finally figured out that they were not running 10.3.9 and that was the trouble. 3.1 admin couldn't tell me that? Yes, that was pretty annoying.
OK, this has ended up kind of a rant, and I apologize. But if anyone knows a workaround to the above mentioned annoyance managing a Mac with 2.2 Admin on it, please let me know.
    Thanks--

Thanks for the info--I did not realize that so much had changed.
It seems to me, then, that at a minimum, Apple could make a version 3.x client which would not interfere with an ARD 2.x admin running on the same machine. It's not reasonable to assume that their customers would need to or have the budget to upgrade all their ARD admins when Apple offers no upgrade options at all. A 2.x Admin machine will often still need to be managed on a network for updates, etc.
If I had paid upgrade pricing for 3.x, I would not feel so strongly about this, I would then feel that I got a deal so that the 2.x client should be retired. But having to buy the 3.x at full price instead makes me feel the need to use the 2.x as long as I can - 3.x is then not an upgrade, it's a separate product. I understand that the Admin app changed a lot, but it would not seem to me such a big deal to make a "universal" ARDclient which could respond properly to whichever version of the Admin was directing it. Apple has a long history of having to do such creative software development.
OK, I'm out. I mark it question answered, but I am going to keep harping on Apple to release a universal client.

  • ARD asking for Serial Number after Upgrade to OSX 10.9 and ARD 3.7?

    Hello All,
I bought ARD 3.6.1 back in 2012 from MAC Store. Yesterday, I decided to upgrade to OSX Mavericks and the upgrade forced ARD to update to 3.7 from 3.6.1 and now ARD is asking for serial number...  Never had a Serial Number since I bought it from Mac Store. Anyone with same problem?
    Many Thanks in Advance!
App Store Update says I have 3.7 already installed.

Not sure how that would happen but you should be able to revert to the Mac App Store version with the following steps:
    1. Launch the App Store app
    2. Go to the Purchases secton and verify that Apple Remote Desktop is showing in your list
    3. Assuming it's in your list, delete Remote Desktop.app from /Applications
    4. Verify that Remote Desktop.app is not installed on any other mounted volumes using Spotlight
    5. If it is installed then either unmount those volumes or delete the app from those other locations
    6. Go back to the Purchases section of the App Store app
    7. If Apple Remote Desktop is shown as "Installed" then select "Reload Page" from the "Store" menu
    8. The entry for Apple Remote Desktop should now give you the option to "Install"
    9. Click "Install"
After installation you should have the correct Mac App Store version that does not prompt for a serial number.

  • Hidden User and ARD and Lion not a good mix

    Hi,
We have a hidden user that we use to monitor students in school. If we upgrade to Lion on the client, the hidden user account will not work anymore with ARD authentication. I can login as the hidden user, but ARD will not accept the credentials for the hidden user. Has anyone else seen this or know how we can still maintain a hidden user and use ARD?

This will get rid or your ant problem. This stuff really works. You put a few drops of the liquid on a little piece of paper and you will see TONS of them come and eat it. They take it back to their colony and it kills them all. The next day they are all gone. It's that quick.

  • Leopard and ARD 2.X

Of course I did... I installed a fresh copy of Leopard on my MacBook Pro, and then installed ARD from the ARD 2.0 CD and it installed both the Admin and Client, and needless to say the ARD Admin will not run. I did update the 2.0 version to 2.2. Every time I try to launch the ARD admin, it ask for my password, then a window pop up saying "Remote Desktop is installing required software components", and then in the same window it say "A newer version of this package is already installed". The only option I have to to click "Done". And then nothing happens, it I try to launch again, the same thing happens...
    Any comments?

I got ARD 2.2 to run on Leopard. From the finder, navigate to:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteMangement
From the folder, delete (or move) the ARDAgent v3.X file. You can now run Remote Desktop 2.2 in 10.5
This is the same work-around apple provided for ARD 2.2 on intel macs
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303128
Hope it works for you like it did for me.

  • AFP and ARD not working at all

I have a mac running latest version of 10.6 and it crashed the other day. It restarted fine but since then I have not been able to connect to it from other macs. It doesnt appear in the network list and I cant connect to it on ARD. Even if you manually connect to it in the "connect to server" option. It has Filemaker Server on it which is working fine and it has a web sharing enabled and that works fine. I can also ssh to it with no problems. I have tried repairing permissions, unticking file sharing and re-enabling. I cant think what else to try.

  • 1 Mac, 1 PC, and ARD

Hey, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to use ARD 3 with a PC and a Mac. I have a Mac, a PC, and a wireless network, and I sometimes need to help the PC user in the house or do updates or something and it would be nice not to leave my iBook. :-D So, is it possible to get all of the functionality with the PC as if it were some other Mac on the network?
12" 1.07 GHz iBook G4 768MB RAM, AirPort Extreme Card   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   iPod [w/video], iSight, Leo Laporte Mousepad, iLife and iWork 2006

If you already have ARD, you could install a VNC host ont he PC and control or observe it that way. However, if all you need to do is remote control a PC, spending $300 for ARD is overkill. Just use VNC on the Mac also, which is free, or buy Timbuktu, which for two computers is a lot cheaper then ARD.
