10.6.8 to Mavericks FireWire fail, need write lock off

It's MacBook Pro, late 2007, I think.  It installed with the App Store.  The computer has known FireWire issues, so the IOFireWire* extension were deleted, and it has worked fine this way since FireWire issues would cause a hang (bad FireWire hardware).  The installation of Mavericks was targeted to a USB flash drive however, the installation has tainted the hard disk of the MBP now.  Booting in single user mode, I wish to delete the /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWire* extensions from the install disk that Mavericks has created on the hard disk, so it can proceed with the boot and complete onto the flash drive.  However, the disk is write locked.  How can I get to write to this partition now to delete these extensions and then regain the original Snow Leopard that is actually on the MBP?

Sorry I forgot to say that I'm booting into single user mode to try to delete the extensions, and that's where I run into the write lock issue.  I have already issued the mount -uw / command, but it still has a write-lock issue, and I don't know how this works with Mac OS X.

i dont even know what shall i do to fix this problem
all i wanna do is to update my mac to mavericks but that isnt happening even after downloading mavericks several times
in each time it reach half way and finish downloading
when it starts to install it fails
anyone knows what shall i do?
    am running mac osx 10.6.8

Check your download speed here > Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Less than 10Mbps, the file may be timing out before it can finish the installation.
Be aware, with Mavericks installed, if you need to repair the startup disk or restore OS X that requires using OS X Recovery which requires a high speed broadband connection as noted here.
Mavericks requires 8GB of disk space.
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop or open the Finder, right or control click startup disk in the Sidebar on the left then click Get Info.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

After I upgrade maverick my display will suddenly shut off but my sounds is still working. Need help on this? Thank you

    Hello rodamitjr,
It sounds like your iMac display will turn off unexpectedly, but you can tell the computer is still on because you hear audio.
I found an article with steps to troubleshoot issues with displays.  This article is for internal and external displays, so you can skip any steps referring to an external display.  I recommend reviewing the full article, but this step specifically stands out to me for the issue you described:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
You can find the full article here:

  • Cannot create new folders on desktop. Cannot drag new items onto desktop. Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal. Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas. Thank you.

I can no longer create new folders on my desktop. The option to do that is now light gray on the drop down menu and can't be selected.
I cannot drag new items onto desktop any longer either.
The Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal.
Folders and items on Desktop open and work normally.
Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas.
    Thank you.

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

After I install OS X Mavericks, My display will intermittent shut off. Do I need to update my video card?

Check your settings for display sleep in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
And be careful if you contemplate changing your video card- Mavericks may not be compatible with a different video card.

Since installing Mavericks, my screen periodically becomes pixelated, forcing me to reboot to resolve the problem.  I've tried reinstalling Mavericks which failed to resolve the problem.  Any suggestions?

You may have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.

What you can do to use it is download gfxstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel.

  • Installing Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, Install failed and HD write-locked

I recently downloaded the mountain lion installer from the App Store and I ran the installer. Stupid person as I am, I did not have any backups for my file and I naively assumed that an apple OS installer would be without flaws. Boy, was I wrong. I need every bytes of my data (or close to every bytes) but the installer failed.
Mid installation, the installer stopped and said that the installation failed and that I need to repair my disk. So I restarted the computer and I ran disk utilities (my start up disk was the OS installer and the installer allows me to run several programs, including terminal, disk utilities, and by the way, when I held option while starting up to see which start up disks I have, I only had the OS installer as the start up disk. Also, the installer allows me to run a program called "Startup Disk" when I click on the apple logo on the top left corner, but it doesn't allow me to startup my computer using Macintosh HD) and noticed that when I highlighted Macintosh HD, my "Repair Disk" button was grayed out. So first things first, I ran the "Verify Disk" button but after a minute or so, Disk Utilities said that verification failed and that Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. But the "repair disk" button is grayed out! So I went to the Mountain Lion installer again and ran it. Of course, it failed again so I restarted the computer.
So I tried to first back up all files in Macintosh HD to an external hard drive using Disk Utilities, and I used features such as "New Image" and "Restore" but they both ended up in "Input/Output error". I tried many methods with Disk Utilities but they resulted in errors.
After some research, I noticed that some people's computers worked after they reset their PRAM. So that's what I did. I held command+option+P+R when computer started up and I reset the PRAM. When the start up disk (which is the OS installer, not the normal operating system) loaded, I was greeted with choose languages option and then I was back in the Mountain Lion installer state. I again ran the installer again, hoping something would be different, but then it was different. But not in a good way. When I was told to choose where I would like to install Mountain Lion, I noticed that Macintosh HD was grayed out. Last time, I was at least able to run the installer but this time, Macintosh HD was grayed out. The installer said that my Macintosh HD was locked. After some research, I learned that apparently, the Mountain Lion installer write-locks Macintosh HD mid installation.
So now I am stuck and I am thinking of two things (plus some questions)
    1. I am wondering if there is a way to unlock Macintosh HD. But even if I can unlock Macintosh HD, there is no guarantee that the installer will successfully install Mountain Lion, am I right?
    a. so how can I un-write-lock Macintosh HD?
    2. More realistically, I am thinking of borrowing someone else's macintosh computer and use it as the backup center. I have a firewire cable and a terrabyte external hard drive. So what I'm thinking is that I'll hook my computer in target mode to my friend's computer and I will also plug in my external hard drive to my friend's computer and then I can download and run Carbon Copy Cloner from my friend's computer to copy all data from my Macintosh HD to my external hard drive. And then I will erase my Macintosh HD, freshly install Mountain Lion onto it and then copy all data back from my external hard drive. But I am not sure about few things.
    a. it looks like my Macintosh HD is write-locked. Can I still use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy all data from Macintosh HD (in target mode) to my external hard drive?
    b. will my computer allow me to erase (or format) Macintosh HD?
    c. will my erased/formatted Macintosh HD able to install + be installed Mountain Lion OS?
If you are here, then you have read my long long problem. Thank you very much and I would really really really appreciate your answers and opinions. Thanks

I'm not sure where you read that about the disk being "write-locked." That doesn't make much sense, given that the major task an installer like this must achieve is writing a whole bunch of files to the hard drive. I think your source was mistaken.
As to what happened, it sounds like your hard drive was badly corrupt to start with, or possibly was on the edge of failing and is now in the process of dying entirely. If you don't have backups of your data, that does not bode well for you, unfortunately. If you can manage to use target mode to copy your data, do that.
Once you're sure you've got all your data, you need to start up from your Snow Leopard install disk and repair the hard drive. (Since it sounds like the Mountain Lion installer didn't work, I wouldn't trust the recovery partition that Mountain Lion installs.) Or, even better, just erase the hard drive entirely and reinstall Snow Leopard. Then, once you're back up and running, with all your data back on the system and with Snow Leopard updated to the most recent version, try installing Mountain Lion again. If any of that fails again, the problem is likely to be a dying hard drive, and you'll need to replace it.

We have an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with maximum of 4G bytes of SDRAM, with OX X 10.9.4 Mavericks.  It is routinely locking-up with the rainbow wheel.  Especially with iTunes and Safari.
I'm wondering it it that Mavericks simply uses more RA that the machine allows when also running application, but I don't see the RAM is being maxed out per se' when in Activity Monitor either.  I've also ran the Disk Utility and have run scans wit Sophos, looking for malware, but have found no issues.
Any ideas?  Any better Malware/Spyware applications?

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

Modern kobo books should just use regular Adobe DRM and be readable on compatible ereaders that are authorized to the correct Adobe ID.
I understand older kobo book had different DRM: but I wouldn't expect those to
When Adobe DRM book information say 'no copying', that generally means no copying outside those Adobe DRM limitations.
You should be able to copy within the restrictions.  You can double-check that with the sellers (Kobo).
    Just double-checking
the pocket book is Adobe DRM compatible?
that you have authorized your pocket book with your current Adobe ID?
menu/Help/Authorize Device when plugged into ADE:  Library/Authorize Device if using the older more reliable ADE 1.7.2
If the pocket book is already authorized but to a different ID, you will need to deauthorize it first, ctrl-shift-E to ADE with device plugged in (or cmd-shift-E on Mac).
Be aware that will lose the ability to read DRM books authorized with the previous ID.

Hi Ahmad, I have the same problem, I have a server windows server 2008 R2 standard. While
doing an Enterprise to Standard downgrade, I have removed enterprise edition of SQL Server 2008, rebooted and while installing standard edition, I get the below error saying "You SQL server 2008 installation completed with failures. Some or all identity
    references could not be translated"
Bit of background. This server has another express instance of SQL Server 2008. I have
used local system account, network service as well as our general SQL service account, but I get the error towards the end of the installation and it fails saying “Some or all identity references could not be translated.”
I am installing a named instance with the same name as before but fails. I have tried
creating a new test instance that fails too. Any ideas? I have uninstalled SQL enterprise edition from

  • Do i need to turn off ups

I have a ups system that lasts 15 mins but there is a power outage schedulded for 4 hours but I will have all my servers powered off so do i need to power off my ups sys?

You should not power off the UPS system unless its battery is close to failing during the outage; even when turned off, a Mac will draw a small amount of power to preserve certain settings. In the event the computer can't draw power from outside, it will use its own battery on most models to remember the contents of the PRAM. Turning off the UPS unnecessarily increases the demand on the computer's built-in battery.
