10.6 Release Buggy

Having switched from PC's to Macs back in the Tiger days I'm rather saddened to see 10.6 drifting the way Windows went ... getting slower and buggier...
1. Bluetooth is flaky. My Mighty Mouse takes 30-40 seconds to be seen by the MacBook when it wakes from sleep. Sometimes it vanishes totally, and I have to reset BT to get it to appear at all.
2. After waking from sleep, my MBP fails to reconnect to my preferred (home) WiFi network. It's visible in the list, working fine, but is ignored until i manually choose the network from the list.
3. Sometimes Finder loses it's mind and the right-click menu on a folder is reduced a a few generic operations, with items like "Open", "Move to Trash" etc missing.
4. Safari 4 is s-l-o-w despite cleaning cache and defragging drive. Safari beach-balls all the time, even just after opening.
These are all things that worked just fine in Leopard, but are now broken in SL. I find that sad, and really hope that Apple are not drifting into the Microsoft model of hacked OS releases.

OK, so I'm willing to try a clean reinstall of SL to see if this cleans out the cruft (echoes of Windows .. sigh)
First things first. It seems like you are too willing to dump the OS without finding out if the problems are with your user account. They are two different things, not like windows. If the problems you are having are in your user account because they were brought over from an earlier system, then re-installing the OS will not fix the problems. All of your user preferences for programs and settings are in the User account and each user account can have different settings. A new user account get's the default settings and they are usually not incompatible or corrupt. If the problems continue in the new User account, then the problems are with the OS, which can be reinstalled without removing the existing accounts (that's the default installation on the DVD).
You could go to System Preferences/Accounts/ - click on the padlock (lower left corner), provide your admin password, then click on the + sign and add a new Admin User account. Now logout and login to the new user account and see if the problems you are having are gone. If they are then we either fix the problems in the user account, move files into the new user account, or you'll have to start fresh with a format and install which is always the last choice in my book.
You don't have to install anything to run this test, and can remove the temporary account when you are done.
Of course, you could just reinstall the whole shebang like Windows needs every year or so. I'm still using my user account that I've migrated from 3 or 4 cats and several machines ago. Just about any problems in a user account can be fixed and the System is pretty easy to install.

  • VZW Release of OS MR Refresh to fix Known 2.2 Froyo bugs?

    I have looked through several pages of posts and Do Not see any solutions for possible problems that users are experiencing. The following is provided from the Motorola Users forum;
If you have already upgraded to 2.2 for Droid X, you have certainly found some great new capabilities. Most owners appear to be having untroubled operation, but  a few owners also found new issues. While the incidence of these these issues is low, we want to provide some positive news for those who might be experiencing them.
Here are some of the known issues raised by forums members, with some information about each. It is not intended to be a complete list at this time -- there are many more improvements in the works. I’ll update this list as information becomes available.
Stuck on Moto logo after reboot – this was tough on a very few owners. Sorry about that. A fix has been developed for this and should eliminate the problem. It will be distributed in a future software release. If you are still experiencing this issue, click here.
Random rebooting – while there always seem to be new conditions that can cause an electronic device to panic, we do have improvements coming that address and eliminate identified panic states. They will be distributed in a future software release.
WiFi connection and stability – improvements in WiFi have been developed, to address several problem areas. They will be distributed in a future software release.
Battery Manager “force close” errors – under some circumstances, pressing the battery icon under Menu > Settings > Battery Manager results in a forced close error. A fix has been developed for this and should eliminate the problem. It will be distributed in a future software release.
Media won’t play – includes “sorry the player does not support this type of audio file," custom ringtone stop working, video won’t play, etc. A reboot will restore full media function, but not permanently. We believe we have identified the cause of these errors. A fix has been developed for this and should eliminate the problem. It will be distributed in a future software release.
Music files cutting off the final four seconds or so – a solution has been developed. It will be distributed in a future software release.
I would also like to add that my HDMI out has a documented, repeatable bug.  There are several other issues that appear to have a work around, and some that do not, but lets start here.
It does not appear that VZW offers any support on its online forum for the DroidX for known customer issues.
Where is VZW at in the testing process? Are they aware of these issues? What kind of time line am I looking at for receiving these fixes so that my phone can be returned to an opperational status? Meaning; when will the Media player work, when will the wifi work? the HDMI out? I don't want my Facebook contacts in my regular contacts.
I realize all these fixs come from Moto, but VZW tests, approves, and releases these OS's. Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response.
    - A concerned 14 year VZW customer.

The excuse that VZW releases buggy OS's just like every other cell company because they are the end-user vendor is ok? It leads me to believe that the issue is Exclusive to the cell companies, and not the manufacturers as I am sure the manufacturer would not release a phone with ANY bugs.
I realize VZW doesn't make the Devices, they just sell them and offer service.  That Service being Communication over cell network, and technical support to include the Operating System which is ONLY released by VZW. If its a hardware issue then yes its straight to Moto. If I have an OS/Communication problem with my phone I don't call Moto, I call VZW. When my phone gets its fixs it will be released by VZW, not Moto.
Android 2.2 Did hit the DroidX two months ago and I have had these bugs for two months now. I am not going to wait around for basic fixs for my phone like I did for the Blackberry Storm. That was two years of pain and I don't feel like doing again.
I am not looking for gingerbread.  I am not looking for icecream.  I am looking for a working DroidX on Froyo. 2.3 can wait till next christmas for all I care, unless it is a fixed Froyo.  It would be hard for me to believe that a company would leave an entire OS version unfixed, and just move on to the next.
I have no open source user created content on my device, unless you mean Blur or the end-user vendor Bloatware Crap that VZW puts on, and what compatibility issues between Android OS updates are you refering to? Android version don't have compatibility issues, its the UI that manufacturers put on their phones that have the compatibility issues. If this was a concern of VZW they could easily tell the manufactures to only use Vanillay Android.  Problems solved. They lock down everything else...

  • ITunes 12.1.0.71 data corruption (TV show release date)

As many of you know, one of the many bugs in the last release of iTunes was that the "Release date" field for TV shows showed a date in 1905 and was not editable.
I just updated to version 12.1.0.71 on my Windows 7 and OS X Yosemite systems and the field is now editable. But, the dates I had set in version 11 all still seem to be lost.
To some this may not seem like a big issue but it's an issue of Apple corrupting my data. This time it's a field that isn't too big of an issue but next time it could be something worse like the actual video file!
Given how often Apple has been releasing buggy software on so many platforms I'm starting to wonder if I can trust them. Is it time for me to dump my Mac and go strictly Windows?
I've submitted this to Apple via their "Feedback" page but I have serious doubts if anyone from Apple reads the submitted feedback.
Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas if my data is actually lost or if this is yet another bug that's just not displaying my data?
    Larry.

  • Adobe has lost a customer for life....

So, here is a run down of what lead to the situation I am letting the forums know about:
Several weeks ago, my mother was using one of the websites she uses that requries Flash and was told she needed to update Flash, which she had done countless times before. Doing what she normally did, she followed the normal steps to install the newest Flash. Somewhere during the upgrade process, the Flash Player Installer failed to complete the upgrade process.
Fast forward several weeks to when I actually have time to try and fix this problem. Before I explain what steps I took to try and resolve this issue, let me provide some quick background about my self. I have a degree in Computer Science, I program for Windows (including the registry) and Linux (both CLI and GUI apps). As such, I know what I'm doing when I try to fix this issue.
So, onward to what made Adobe lose a customer!
I called in to the support desk at 800-833-6687 on 06/30/2010. I don't have the name of who I spoke with, but it was an Indian man who actually spoke English well enough for me to not have to guess at what he was saying. I wish all Indians spoke that well, it might make the customer service experience easier. I explained to him what my situation was, and he proceeded to tell me that there woud be a $39 charge for any help because Flash Player is a free product. I told him to put his supervisor on because I wasn't going to pay for support when this is clearly not the customers fault. He said he would but that his supervisor would say the same thing. Bluntly, I told him I didn't give a **** and to put his supervisor on. (Ok, that may have been out of line, but I wasn't interested in talking with a peon who would argue with me. I'm the customer, and arguing with me is a good way to piss me off.)
I then spoke with a man who sounded southern British, or at least had a British accent. It was enough I couldn't fully understand his name. I explained to him, agian, what the problem was, and in more detail. I explained that the issue was with the registry, and that the only way it could have happened is if the installer or uninstaller had caused the issue. He gave me the same speech about there being a $39 charge, to which I flat out said it wasn't happening.
After getting pissed at both peons, I hung up the phone more annoyed and frustrated than before. So, much like the attempts before, I went back to trying to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it. I basically had two options. 1) Re-install Windows...not happening. 2) Code up some cowboy code and jack with the registry old school style to get rid of the offending entries. I'm crazy, but I'm not insane...jacking with the registry?!? Yikes!
So, after rebooting into safe mode and using all the standard tricks to get rid of the offending registry entries, even some not-so-common ones. I tried everything from regedit to CLI reg. All of them came up with "Access denied." After trying everything except option 1 and 2 above, I called the support desk number back and kept mashing zero until I got through to a person in the US.
I first spoke with a lady by the name of Nancy. She listened as I explained my problem and finally said "You are correct, there is normally a $39 charge for support requests related to Flash Player, but in this case, it's clear to me that this isn't a normal issue. Let me see if I can get my senior on the line to help you with this issue." Yay for Nancy! This is so far beyond anything a regular user would be capable of doing on their own, which is the entire reason I refuse to pay for support even on a free product. (More on this later.)
Nancy transferred me to her senior, a man by the name of Angel. I explained to him in great detail and at length what the issue is, what I had done to try and fix it, and why I wasn't going to pay for support. He tried having me install Revo Uninstaller, but that was a useless move. I had already ran the Flash Uninstaller, so technically speaking there wasn't anything for Revo to uninstall. And it apparently couldn't be used to force remove registry entries (which I doubt would have worked anyways seeing as how the Administrator account couldn't even remove them using the CLI tool.) He suggested using System Restore to fix the problem. Sadly, thanks to another useless feature from MS, the last system restore point appears to have been made after this bug appeared. Eventually even Angel gave me the over-reguritated excuse of "go online to the forums and hope for the best" followed by "you might have to reinstall your OS." Let me just say this about the second aformention item... The Flash Installer is directly responsibly for the state of its registry keys. Any corruption or improper settings on those registry keys ultimately lies first and foremost with the Flash Installer. In this case, those registry entries appeared to be corrupted to the point where even the Administrator account could not remove them. If it truely is the case that the Flash Installer has corrupted the registry and the only way to fix it is to either use option 2 that I listed above or reinstall the OS, that make Adobe liable for the time and expense of either case. It was the faulty installer that created the situation to begin with, which is published (albeit freely) by Adobe. EULA or not, you can't release buggy software and expect people to pay for your mistakes. I made sure that Angel understood the gravity of such a prospect. I think he did, but I also think he had the mentality of "good luck getting us to pay for it." Oh well if he did.
I expressed my dis-satisfaction with his reponses, and made it plainly clear that Adobe's position is utter garbage. Seriously, Adobe makes millions off of Flash and its related products. The only reason Flash Player is free is so that consumers will want the eye candy on their websites and so that Adobe can keep selling their (overpriced) Flash based "solutions" to rake in the money. Is Adobe so big and bad that they can casually release beta software that impacts a customers computer adversely that they don't have to care? I don't even have to answer that do I?
I understand that Flash Player is free software, but lets face it, open source software is free, and it more often than not has excellent support. What makes Adobe think they are so great that they can offer a free product and then make extra cash off it when it seriously breaks a customers computer? I'm not some customer calling in who has no clue what a computer is let alone how to run it who can't figure out how to even install Flash Player. I'm a power user who does systems level programming on multiple OSes. Do you really think I'm so stupid I need to pay you to tell me "try this, then this, then that, oh hell, there's a major problem here"?
So, ranting aside, I figured out what the issue was after hanging up with Angel. It was the one final thing that hadn't occured to me to check. Let's face it, there is a process to go through when troubleshooting, and I had come to the end of it. I must say, it surprises me that the Adobe techs had not mentioned this fix, but then again, not so much.
Rather than be a kind person, I'm going to screw all of Adobe and it's customers like Adobe tried to screw me out of $39. Yes, that's how much my tech tip is really worth. A lousy $39. It's a simple fix to a serious problem, but Adobe obviously views me as little $ symbols rather than a customer worth taking care of. So here you go Adobe, take your screwing that you will never care about.

P.S. I plan to read the responses to this post just for the sheer laughs it will generate. Call me what you will, poke fun at me, agree with me, I really don't care. I've stated my case, and that's all I came to do.

Funny that this thread would be revived after so long...
I'm bored, so what the heck.
eidnolb wrote: I don't question your degree. However, since you weren't able to "figure out how to even install Flash Player" then that I must disagree with. I was able to figure it out without calling Adobe support or asking for help on the Flash Player Forum. I didn't even know either one existed back in July of 2009. And no, I don't have a degree as you do.
I didn't call to seek support becase I didn't know how to fix it. I called because their product was crap and wanted *them* to fix it, as a decent company should.
You sir, slammed Microsoft, your own Employer which I find shameful. I am just a Volunteer here on the Flash Player Forum, but I have great respect for Adobe and all of their products as I do Microsoft and the other Tech Companies.
You seem to think I work for Microshaft when I said "I program for Windows." Rather than taking it literally, you could have taken it as I write programs that run *on* Winblows.
In case anyone is interested, Adobe finally fixed the issue with their updater/installer, which would have rendered this thread useless anyways. Aside from that, if Adobe was the great company they want people to think they are, they wouldn't charge for support that would most likely have not resulted in the problem being fixed anyways.
The lesson? Do what I did and think for your self. The fix was simple, but I still refuse to give details on it. Oh, and yes, I use Adobe products only when I must. I've replaced as many of them as possible with open source alternatives.
    Enjoy.

  • Combining common aspects of all Adobe Apps and their core functions

I use Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Lightroom daily. So do most of you.
I've noticed that aside from the bizarre UI differences between say InDesign and Photoshop, there are other changes that make little sense - and I'd like to know why, and hear how you think we could change this.
Companies today are under the assumption that if they throw more fluffy features at us, we'll not notice the underlying core functionalities are suffering from lack of attention.
For instance - sure, geotaging in lightroom is useful - if you have a GPS attachment for your camera (or if it's built in) so having that as an option is nice, but having it load all the time and run "in the background" while I'm using lightroom doesn't work for "me". Facial recognition, it's coming eventually, but really, when would the pro photographer "daily" use this feature to search 20k + images? We already tag our things, and it's far faster to search a text string than it is to scan pixels.
So awesome fun feature, I'm sure the kids will love it, so include it sure, but don't have it eat up my resources. Let me turn it off.
    So here's the point.
Adobe has created, and is still creating, a macrocosm of software that is supposed to interlink, allowing us to be productive from photo/drawing to publishing, and connect and share and so on, but the core features of our software do not do all of these things well - they only do them adequately.
We have Photoshop.com / Creative Cloud / Revel and other storage areas for our stuff - and none really link and all over lap, and all need another's feature, or improvement.
Why not merge them and have one awesome experience. But too, the "kids" already have tumblr, and instagram and facebook and drop box and on and on.
Why why have so many Adobe forums (on different sites) - why not merge them?
None of Adobe's offerings are "revolutionary" - just more clutter and more of the same, and more logins and profiles and links.
Like why have so many Adobe forums (on different sites) - why not merge them?
Can you name one Adobe product that is "new" and a "must have" over the last 5 years that you cannot already use as freeware?
Adobe for Linux would be so very awesome - but oh wait, they already have it for Macs - that's unix - isn't that the "same"? So where is it then? Collusion with apple?
Why did it take so long to have 64bit apps, why are some apps still not 64bit? Why are some both?! - and that I'd have to install them both?! o_0
Open and Save dialogues in the UI's don't match between programs - XP styles vs Win7 styles. Some programs are "new" others "old" - huh?
Dictionary's don't match. Why not have one and load that between programs?
UI scaling doesn't match - different icon sizing, and font sizing (no we aren't talking retina support - just basic enlargement).
Tool layouts/options don't match. Fireworks / Illustrator. You bought Macromedia almost a Decade ago, may want to upate that?
Why are "quick" icons removed from the UI (like arrange all) and stuffed into a menu structure, but available in other programs?
Processor and Ram and GPU user settings/options don't match. - and yes I know it's application specific, but really? Illustrator couldn't use allocation options?
Limitations on artboard sizes that corel for instance doesn't have (Illustrator bogs down - with a lot of effects - at 100" and can't go larger than 220"? really?)
isn't illustrator basically math based? Corel doesn't have this issue?
Limitations on printing/layout and other options that Corel doesn't have (man they have an awesome print layout preview screenthat indesign and illustrator could use).
Scalable anchor points based on zoom level. Those things are frightfully small.
Options to actually disable (not simply hide) add-on features/modules/tools not being used. *cough* lightroom.
Network access capabilities for some programs (lightroom cannot read it's database over a network)
The Adobe Application Manager - a simple "verify and download" tool is embarrassingly lacking in options pertaining just to its function.
Why is Lightroom such a bother to install through AAM/Creative Cloud Subscription?
Why do the installers take hours and hours to complete? Since Vista, I can install a full computer and its updates by the time I'm done getting Creative Suite Master installed and updated.
I'd like to hear about more common sense "core functions" that should be addressed - so Adobe can have a simple list - in one place that "highlights" where they are really dropping the ball.
Searching Adobe forums is fun - and you can search all of the above and find long threads on all of them - years old and un-addressed. Maybe because they are spread out?
Adobe seems to be resting on its laurels of decades of being the defacto design suite, and it's been apparent for years that the core software is late to release, buggy, bloated, and although more appealing to the eye, and now with fancy schmancy cloud features, our core operations are just overwhelmed due to all the fluff.
We have too much "left hand doesn't give a sh*t about what the right hand is doing" and that needs to change.
So I'd like to see your lists of "when I use this feature in this program, I'd have expected it to be in this other program and it's not".
or "Why doesn't this work like it used to?"
or "this free program here has this awesome thing, why don't we have it here?"
I'm not talking about a list of glitches, I'm not talking about cloud dosiewhatsits and the fluffy crap.
We'll all assume you have the appropriate computer gear to run it adequately.
I'm taking about core features we spend thousands on.
I'm taking about you having a think about the core reason you bought "this" Adobe Program.
Does your Adobe software do what was advertised correctly, "quickly" and well.
Can you move "seamlessly" between Adobe apps?
Then list those things that confuse you because it "should be there" (because in the last 3 releases it was and now it's gone) or "should work this way" and doesn't.
Maybe then Adobe could see that our list is a sign they need to get back to basics before they overwhelm what little functionality they have left.
I didn't buy Abode products to have cloud storage - I bought it to make money and be productive in a clean workflow.
I don't seem to have that anymore.

If you bought them as separate apps, the will be independent apps. There is a natural connection between the apps. Acrobat has a preference for the touchup tools for raster and vector graphics.
I guess if you never set the Image and Object Editor, these could be blank, but personally, it is nice to be able to edit images and objects on the rare times you do not have access to the original files used to create a pdf file. Any modern Illy file can usually be opened by Acrobat. I don't have Photoshop Elements, but they may be able to rasterize pdfs. I would not worry about the connections between the apps. Most of the time, they work completely independently of the other parts and only react with each other when ou want them to.

  • A question for the CCers

We all know Adobes track record for releasing buggy software especially with major updates
We have seen on the Premiere and Creative Cloud sections literallly hundreds of requests for help after upgrading.
    So CCers,two questions
1 -  just why have you rushed headlong into upgrading?
2 - do you enjoy being Beta testers
    Col

Your answer to no 2 Steven  is an honest way of answering it but it also confirms to the O.P just  what he wants to hear.
Namely that Adobe have released software knowingly "unfinished and with bugs" that users will need to discover. The inference is that it should not be sold or purchased.
I have never had a perfect piece of software yet and  I do not buy them with the thought we are beta testers.
I have beta tested plugins for Premiere (Automatic Duck) and that process is an entirely different experience than upgrading software and experiencing a few minor glitches here and there.
Premiere has always worked for me and I have versions CS2 thru to CS4 on two legacy systems that will still work and could be utilised to edit (and produce income) should I wish to use them.
I know this because I use them on occasion to pull historic footage and projects for my showreels.
Meantime...I am writing this as I sit in the suite on a beautiful Saturday afternoon... downloading CS7 / CC etc.
I may feel differently later today!

  • LINUX x86 32b vs Solaris 64b - 10.2.0.2 - advice

Soon I am going to have to make a recommendation to my management about whether or not we should migrate from out LINUX32b environment (Dell Poweredge) to Solaris 64b on a SUN server. We are running 10.2.0.2 on RHEL 4 - 32b hughmem kernel. The company I work for has gone through an explosive growth phase in the past year and has outgrown their oracle hardware infrastructure. I have found that running 10.2.0.2 on LINUXx86 has been a nightmare - bug after bug after bug, severe memory leaks - especially running Oracle's ASM. In the past I have always used Sun Solaris and have had very few OS-related problems. My question is - is it just the 10.2.0.2 showing the usual latest release bugginess, or is it the LINUXx86 OS? Is Solaris 64b any better? Does LINUX 64b work OK with 10G? I've been experiencing things like the server completely shutting down unexpectedly - and while no errors were thrown, and nothing showed up on the Dell Dx my gut feeling tells me it happened because an ASM diskgroup ran out of space. This is, of course, intolerable. But, before I push for Solaris, I want to make sure I'm not jumping out of one frying pan into another. Plus - I've found that Oracle's support on the LINUX platform is weak. Any advice or experiences to share?

First thing , that want to say is play safe. Don't jump into conclusion take your to evaluate.
Do you think, you will not get any issue one you move to Solaris ?
Have you applied all the CPU patch ?
Don't use new technologies as soon as it introduce , wait for some time so it become mature. I make Thump rule to keep 1 level below then current version of oracle, but keep eye on all the development and feedback of current version. If very much needed like bug hitting badly and that fixed in new version then only go for new version and always apply CPU patch because it has most of the major known issue fixes.
When world is moving to Linux, you moving to Solaris ( There are some exception , some major database are on TRU 64 / Solaris ). If you have hardware issue go for Linux RAC.
I've found that Oracle's support on the LINUX platform is weak. Its not true , in fact it is observed first patch / release come for Linux only.
and oracle come with his own Linux OEL ( Oracle Enterprise Linux ).

  • OSB 10gR3 memory usage

I have been experiencing "out of memory" type errors on several of our OSB development and certification boxes. We haven't even begun to drive real load through the OSB which is causing me more than a little concern. First a little background.
We have about a dozen message flows. A few take REST requests (inbound) and turn them into SOAP requests (outbound) to talk to legacy apps. The majority are REST on both sides. All are what I would describe as simple. Straight copies of data from one side to the other. No orchestration or dynamic routing. We have java callouts that check the contents of a passed in string for a valid chksum value and return true or false. false causes the message flow to fail the request without calling a business service. No real data allocation is going on in the callouts. We are configured to start with a heap size of 512meg and have a max sizqe of 3gig. Cert is using the jrockit jvm. Dev is using Suns jdk. Only the OSB runs in this instance of WebLogic. Called services are standalone POJOs running on remote hosts.
Looking at one managed servers in cert shows that it has handled about 500,000 requests, received 240meg and sent about 1gig of data. This copies heap size is stiCll sitting at the initial 512meg size after running 5 days. Last week one of these cert copies grew from 512meg to 3gig out of memory in 54 seconds according to the GC stats. So I'm assuming a single very large request or response took him out. We have 4 copies in the cluster and requests are round robin'd across the managed servers. So multiple request to a single copy seems unlikely. Most of the logging happens when a request is done, so nothing in the logs shows a huge transaction if there is one. Sampling the last 50,000 request on this copy shows that message response sizes range from 0 bytes to 9meg. Only about 30 requests have exceeded 1 meg and only 100 have exceeded 100k. The average response size is 3k.
So far we have done the following:
    1) made sure all business proxies have a timeout 60 seconds or less. (We had stuck threads as the various called service developers release buggy new code)
    2) all message flows that return large data, (more than 1k) are set with Content Streaming Enabled (Memory Buffer, No Compression)
Would paging attachments to disk or using compression on the Content Streaming make much difference? I assumed streaming was using a small memory buffer and passing the data out as fast as it got it. Perhaps that is not really the case.
Any ideas on things I should be investigating?
I have thought about turning on Terse Proxy Tracing for all calls to see if I could get the logs to tell me what was going on when it died. Assumption being it dies before the access log has a chance to report a massive response.

There could be many reasons behind an out-of-memory error.
If you see anything related to OutOfMemory due to Number of Threads, then set -Xss memory option to a higher value.
If OutOfMemoryError thrown for the reason of PermGen Space size exceed then set -XX:MaxPermSize memory option to a higher value.
-sever option helps to deal faster in thread context switching.
-Xms and -Xmx options set starting heap size and maximum heap size respectively. Make these two values equal to get best performance in server mode and minimize GC cycle.

  • Bridge CS3: location of keyword index ???

I know that Bridge stores the actual keyword(s) with the image files but where is the overall "index" located on my hard drive?
The index is the structure that gives the instant access through the images.
    Thanks

That doesn't sound right to me.
My path wasn't quite correct it should have been
    C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Application Data\Adobe\Bridge CS3
and the keywords are stored in
    Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml
The cache files contain thumbnail data and these have to be rebuilt if image files are moved but the keywords stay with the image and are referenced by Bridge wherever the file is.
That is my interpretation and I fully agree that the workings of Bridge are not properly documented by Adobe. But don't expect things to improve: the rushed time-scales imposed by the marketeers mean that not only are new releases buggy, but the documentation is inadequate or non-existent. People that want to understand the program have to spend hours sifting through the Knowledge Base (that's a misnomer!) and assorted blogs to find out what's going on.
Welcome to the wonderful new world of user friendly Adobe.

  • Scanning from Photoshop CS4, using a Brother MFC-8420

Hi all, I'm trying to scan from within Photoshop CS4 (File -> import -> Brother Twain -> etc).
It worked fine with Tiger/PPC/CS2. But since I have Leopard on an Intel Mac Pro, no dice. All I can use is the 'Brother Control Center' which allows me to make staggering 100dpi scans at 100%, but i need a higher resolution.
I already downloaded the proper drivers from Brothers site. Several times.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

You can change the scan resolution settings. With the ControlCenter software, just to the right of the scanner "Model" selector, there is a "Configuration" button where you can choose Configuration > Scan > Image - and set the resolution and many other optimization settings for the scans, including file type, document size etc.
Each of the different scan types - Image, OCR, E-mail, File - can have different configuration set.
I'm not having any problems scanning from my MFC-9840CDW to PS CS3 or by using the Brother ControlCenter2 software. I haven't tested with PS 4 as we are moving away from slowly released, buggy, proprietary interfaces that Adobe products have become... (Another whole topic and rant )

  • Sadness

When I first started visiting these forums, it was lots of posts about "How do I do x ?"  and asking for creative advice. And there were lots of people with tons of good information. (Miss you Harm)
Now it seems that most posts are about how things don't work correctly, or that Premiere doesn't  do things like FCP, or Premiere doesn't have (name the feature) and how that is so terrible.
Even in the Lounge the conversations are far more negative than they used to be before CC.
I guess this is a plea for someone to try and get Adobe to wake up. Someone here has to have some sort of connection to someone that can make a change.
Adobe, people are not happy. You are NOT listening to what your customers want, or need. Stop trying to be the other guys. You had an amazing product to begin with.
Please return to your previous business model of making quality software, and providing customers what they actually want. You could continue your CC subscription model, but bring back the perpetual license. So many of us would love to have updated software with new upgrades, but we simply will not rent software. CS6 is plenty for someone like me, and I'm sure many others. I don't have to have the new stuff. Until I can get it through perpetual license, I won't spend any more money with your company. You lose, not me. I have a business that does just fine with what I have, and can get so many other places if needed.
And dropping phone support? That is simply being cheap. Customer service is the ultimate in keeping and growing business.
This may be one of the last times I visit the forums. I have found that lately, I can get the information easier by doing a Google search. And I get to miss out on the negativity.
Thank you again to all of the "Gurus" here on the forums, even those who have spent time arguing against me on some of the posts.    Your wealth of information has been greatly appreciated.
    Jason

Alas Jason  I am afraid that your plea to Adobe will be lost for etermity, not because they hear what you say but because they simply do not care.
It is again.........you can have any color you like as long as it is black.
It is take it or leave it.
But, Adobe has not been making quality software, Premier Pro 2, 4 and 6 had many bugs.  They have had a history of releasing buggy software and paying users Beta testing
If you want good quality software then does what it says and a company that presently cares about their users look no further than Edius.
Yes things are negative, that is sad, but if we stop being negative and say how wonderful the CC is then they will not change and CC is hear on its own for good

  • Quicktime 7.4 downgrade to 7.2, then upgrade back, has stuffed QT!

Okay, so I stupidly upgraded to quicktime 7.4 when my mac helpfully told me there was a new update available. I know not to do this on my Avid, but thought that apple quicktime and apple FCP Studio would be compatible... hmmm.
Needed to work with flash and mpegs so found a post on here with instructions on how to downgrade back to 7.2/7.3 (using Pacifist). Did this successfully on my G4 and this now happily lives in the past running QT 7.2 and is able to open and play all my flash videos.
Thought the downgrade on my G5 would also run smoothly, but after downgrading to 7.2 QT no longer opened, DVD Studio Pro said it needed 7.3 to run and FCP wouldn't open. So I downloaded and installed the 7.3 upgrade (figuring I can live with one mac that can see and convert flash quicktimes).
Same again - QT wouldn't open, neither would FCP and now also the System Preferences won't open. Eeeekk!
So I thought, I'd better re-install 7.4 and at least get the mac running properly. Still no joy - no QT, no FCP and no system preferences.
I'm getting desperate and have now wasted almost 2 days on this problem. Why are apple releasing buggy updates? And why do they not have any solutions?
Any help would be ever so greatly appreciated.

    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
    See if the following helps:
Do an archive and install of your OS from the OS disc. Stop at the QT upgrade you need.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 Scroll down to "Archive and Install”
    *Regarding Pacifist:*

  • Layers (especially text) not "updating" quickly or at all CS5

When working with text heavy files in CS5 (64bit, windows 7 x64, core i7 920 proc), at some point, seemingly at random, layers will stop updating. Example: I'll edit a text layer, but it will not show in real time, and still won't show until I've clicked out to at least one other layer and started altering it in some fashion, and even then it takes some time to finally show the text edits I've made on that first layer. This is increasingly exasperating, and makes editing/altering/adding layers (really just working on the file at all) almost impossible.

So it would appear that this is either
    A) a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS4/5 64 bit
    B) a problem when combining Nvidia cards with 64 bit Photoshop.
Most likely it's a problem combining your particular model of video card with 64 bit Photoshop on your particular machine.
Such problems are almost always solved with video driver updates.  NVidia often has a habit of releasing buggy drivers.
If you already have installed the latest they've released, then it's likely they will release another at some point that fixes the problem.
It looks as though you've found the Font Preview has helped, but some other things you can try now to help prove whether it's the video driver or not:
Edit - Preferences - Performance, [Advanced Settings...], change the Mode to Basic, and try unchecking Vertical Sync.
Edit - Preferences - Performance, try unchecking [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing.
If the OpenGL settings don't affect the issue, then more likely you have a corrupted or badly crafted font file.  If that's the case, moving all the fonts you have added can solve the problem.  You can use the process of elimination, which can be a little time consuming, to add them back group by group to see which one causes the problem.

  • Problem installing 7.6.0.29

When installing iTunes 7.6.0.29 a window opens that says that there was an error writing to file "itunesphotosupport.dll" because I don't have permission.
The file does exist in the iTunes folder. Just can't figure out what could be causing the error.
    Anyone?

After uninstalling iTunes, I attempted to delete the iTunes folder. Unfortunately, the system does not allow it. That's when I did a clean install of XP. The reinstall of XP did not make a difference and the error that iTunesPhotoSupport.dll cannot be accessed continued to appear.
This is just a guess, but after reading about the problems other Window users who are having problems running iTunes 7.6 it seems that the problem is with the current release. What is interesting is that the majority of the problems relate to video for iTunes.
iTunes 7.6 is running fine on another machine. In fact XP Pro was just reinstalled on that machine as well and everything went smoothly--including iTunes. The machine having the problems is XP Home in case that makes a difference.
I hope Apple releases an update for iTunes soon. I've learned a lesson through this and that is not to update iTunes immediately when a new version is release. Instead, I'll do what I've done with Microsoft updates--wait a few weeks and read the forums for update issues of the software. Hate to think of Apple turning into a Microsoft and releasing buggy software.

  • Freaking Out!

I have a 3rd generation 15gb ipod. Ever since I downloaded the new Itunes - both the 5.something and the 6.0 my iPod is no longer recognized and will not update. Also the updater for 9/23 doesn't recognize it either.
I have tried many of the solutions on here and nothing seems to work. I am not going to reinstall 4.9 because it's not fair that I have to use an older version, I want to hear my podcasts for chrissakes!!
How can I fix this??? And my local genius bar could care less..

Well, after I went back to 4.9 I upgraded to 5.0.1 and it worked fine. It is frustrating to have to do that and Apple shouldn't release buggy software but at least my iPod is working now.
