10.7.3, system hang, three beeps, "debugger called: double panic"

Hi all
Here are the symptoms:
0. Otherwise normal system usage; system uptime more than 24 hours.
1. System freezes.
2. Three loud beeps, identified as the self-diagnostic report for cases of RAM failure.
3. Message in console/terminal style characters in the upper left hand corner of the screen: "debugger called: double panic"
Additional info:
(A) Does not seem to be timed with installation of new software or new usage pattern.
(B) Apple "genius" ran hardware diagnostics; RAM as well as all other systems passed.
(C) This happened before, but I didn't notice of there was a message or whether machine froze
(D) In response to (C), I had re-seated RAM as instructed in MacBook Pro manual.
(C) MacBook Pro, mid-2010; Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b); 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3; NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
The "genius" couldn't find anything when he searched what he termed "the knowledge base." He didn't have access to the message, though.
Google has been useless, but I am not that great a google searcher.
I hope no one has had anything similar---but if you have, let me know what, if anything, helped!
Thanks!

I am re-opening (or rather just continuing) this thread because this problem persists. This time the machine was asleep, with the lid closed, and the three-beep RAM fault alarm started going of. The machine would not wake up and I pushed the power button and held it to turn it off.
I upgraded to 10.7.4 recently (as soon as I was notified by the system update message).
This time, when I restarted, it began indexing the disk using Spotlight. The little flashing dot appeared in the magnifying glass, and if I pulled down the menu, it gave the message that's given when it first begins indexing.
Here is the result of executing the commands recommended above:

    How can this be fixed?

screen goes black and Apple logo comes up as if resetting but it doesn't reset...after several attempts to reset by pressing on/off and home simultaneously, it will usually come back up...today I got the double panic message so I wanted to know if something can be done to prevent this from happening again...I have done a factory restore several times over the past 5 months but this keeps happening about once a week

  • Hangs and Beeps

I purchased a Mini a couple of days ago and yesterday it started hanging after about every 20 minutes of work. The last time I got a gray box in the middle of the screen that told me I needed to reset the system. Which I did via holding the power switch in. Now the system will not power up. I get nothing on the screen and three beeps. I get this every time I try to power the system on. I cannot find out what these beep codes mean. Does anyone have a URL that I can find this info or know anything about this?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You have encountered a "kernel panic". It sounds like you have some bad RAM. Three beeps indicate that no good RAM has been found. Check out Knowledge Base Article #58442.
Did you upgrade the RAM yourself? If not, you should call AppleCare Support or take your Mac mini into an Apple retail store. If you did change the RAM yourself, if you've damaged anything in the process, you will have voided your warranty and any repairs may have to be paid for.

  • IMac gives three beeps and freezes

My neighbour's iMac starts and runs normally most of the time, but periodically when running emits three beeps and then freezes. This is NOT the usual "three beeps at startup" indicating a RAM problem, but whilst the machine is is actually being used.
Can't seem to find anything about this anywhere. Any ideas, anyone?
(The logic board was replaced very soon after purchase as the machine had all sorts of problems . . .)

My imac mid 2010 worked fine with "new" memory for 6 months, then started hanging in mid-session - meaning it froze and beeped loudly hours or days after it booted OK. Put old memory back in and noticed it ran more smoothly with less memory than more. Put the "new" memory back in and ran memtest for days and days; no problems reported. But, the system still froze after I'd been working for a while - at odd times. So, took the "new" memory back to the store, and, while there, upgraded to (more expensive) Crucial brand memory - just to be on the "safer" side. Put the replacement memory in and my imac has never run better - not even when new. So far, my imac is quieter, cooler, and smoother now than since the day I bought it. Thought I'd post this on this old thread because Apple Care had told me to bring the machine to them for three days of testing - per other posts I'd seen on the net. But, that would have been a complete waste of time - since they'd wind up (with the old memory) telling me "no problem," or, (with the "new" memory,) "it's a non-apple part problem." Meanwhile, bad memory can mean bad writes to your hard drive; mine seems fine, but I generally pay close attention to problems and fix them asap, or, sooner. If you wait until you have additional problems, you may spend a lot more time and money getting things finally done - and you may wind up back at "square one" or worse if you trash your drive and it's contents.

  • MacBook Pro Three beeps - RAM Test passed

    Hey,
my MacBook Pro (Early 2011, 2.0 GHz, Mountain Lion 10.8.4, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 500 GB HDD) recently began to freeze or power off and then playing three beeps instead of turning on again.
The problems began some weeks ago, as the file system on my SSD (I've switched the Superdrive with my HDD and put in an additional SSD myself) broke and could not be repaired by Disk Utility. So I formatted the partition and reinstalled Mountain Lion. Since then my Mac crashed three times with (logged) Kernel Panics.
In the interim it's running quite stable, but it froze in the past two or three days several times while I was using it (for example playing a YouTube video or a MP4-File saved on my harddrive) and then began to beep three times. I know this should indicate some kind of RAM issue.
The first time the beeping occured, my Mac began to work again after I carried it over to a friend without opening it at all. Then I ran the Apple Hardware Test (short version) and it passed, later I also ran the extended version and it passed as well. The memtest utility also finds no error.
The latest crash was a bit harder. I took out the 8 GB RAM (I've upgraded from original 4 GB) and reinstalled the original "Apple" 4 GB RAM that came with my MacBook - still three beeps. So I took them out and just put in one bar of my RAM (so one of the two 4 GB bars) and it booted just fine. I wanted to rule out a defect of my logic board, so I tried the following combinations of installed RAM:
first bar in the first slot      - boots
first bar in the second slot - boots
second bar in the first slot - boots
second bar in the second slot - boots
    both bars installed  - boots
Another thing that happened recently: I put my Mac to sleep with ~25% battery left, it was then laid to the ground. After I picked it up maybe an hour later it didn't power on when I opened the lid and also didn't when I hit the power button. So i plugged it in and it loaded the saved memory from the SSD - but the display just showed a resolution of about 800 by 600 pixels. It booted to the login screen, I entered my password and then it restarted automatically (still with low resolution), booted with the apple logo, crashed again and booted directly to the recovery partition. I tried to choose the Mountain Lion partition to reboot from, but it wasn't listed (instead I just saw the Bootcamp partition on my HDD). I powered it off and on again, hitting the option key to see all my drives and voilà, all partitions were listed (ML, Bootcamp and Recovery) and the Mac booted successfully to the login screen, where it restored the correct resolution of 1680*1050.
I don't know what to do, since the RAM bars don't seem to be the problem (since they are passing the test, running fine in between and the original RAM also produced three beeps). It seems to be the logic board, but the crashes occur quite random and it's not as if one RAM slot was totally broken. As the problems started with a broken file system, could it also be the SSD (although the SMART-Status is still verified)?
I hope anyone can help me or at least give a useful advice.

I would like to give you few pointers that may give you some relief. First, your problems sound almost identical to mine. The timeline is almost identical as well. After following the advice from the Apple Support Tech, we finally arrived at the conclusion that it is a hardware problem with my late model MacBook Pro 2011. The Apple support tech asked me to take it in for service. Since I had over 10 hours before my appointment, I did some additional diagnostic and made some discoveries.  I will outline my steps below to show how I arrived at my conclusion.
Problem:  MacBook beeps 3 times and freezes, BSD dump on screen or frezzes and restarts with appropriate fail message.
Apple: Use original 8gig Apple ram, Boot into Diagnostic utility and restore 10.7 OS, restore backup from time machine.
Solution: Everything worked fine, no more crashes. Restored TimeMachine backup using Diagnostic utility.
Problem: Booted fine, after 15 minutes, went into recursive white screen of death, as I like to call it.
Apple: Sounds like a hardware issue, scheduled Apple Store visit.
Solution: Removed SSHD (seagate hybrid) and reinstalled MacBook HD. Updated to current OS, 10.8.4, did not restore any of TimeMachine backups. Running CPU, ram, HD stress tests for several hours without a crash or freeze.
Called Apple support and cancelled my Apple store visit and determined to allow more stress tests to run over night and also testing the SSHD outside using SeaTools for any problems with the drive. So far none after 4 hours of testing.
Conclusion: During the past several months as Apple has been updating the OS, I belive the applications and utilities that are running on my machine may be causing the crashes of the MacBook pro. My suggestion is to Make a backup if you do not do this daily. Restore OS from Diagnostic utility and update OS. Do not install any third party utilities that alter OS or enhance the OS operations. Reinstall your programs from scratch. Use migrations utility to restore only the data associated with your programs. I believe that you will avoid restoring any programs that might cause your crashes. I also suggest you run a day or two without restoring anything just to confirm your MacBook is operating well. I will keep you posted after I finish in two days as to the outcome. But I am certain it is not a hardware issue at this point.

  • System Hangs - requires power off, then panic

I have a mac mini that runs all the time at a weekend house. I can access it remotely using Apple Remote Desktop. Recently, the Mini has started to hang. It runs (all lights on) but screen goes dark and machine cannot be ping'ed on network. I tried unplugging all USB and Firewire devices but to no avail. I cannot tell what cause the hang/crash. There is no Panic in the Console Log at time of hang. There is a panic that gets listed at start-up though. This has happened three time now so I am a bit concerned. The last time it happened Oct 30 and machine was reset Nov 6. From the System Log:

any ideas what is going on?

Just happened again last night (11/25). Machine stops responding and screen is dark. Happens while Mac Mini is unattended so I cannot say exactly what the cause it. I went through every log in the console and the last entry was:
    2009-11-25 19:46:55:791|SyncServer|60712|c10f10|Server|Info| Goodnight, Gracie.
The last file saved on my harddrive (from Indigo events window) was :
2009-11-25 19:39:08 RCS The MasterBedroomTemperature is 58 degrees.
I came to machine after I could not remote into into, fond screen dark and all I could do was restart. Restart came with typical panic message, but it was dated 11/26 (after poweroff restart). I do not know why I keep freezing, but it has happened about 5 times over last 3 months.

  • Three beeps booting from cd but not regular boot up?

I have a good number of bad sectors on the internal hd of my Macbook Pro, so I want to run disk ultilty/repair from the Snow Leopard boot cd.  Trying to boot from the cd (either by pressing "c" or pressing "alt" and choosing the cd on startup) shows the Apple logo but goes no farther, and produces a repetition of three beeps.  Looking at other posts it seems that three beeps are an indicator of bad memory, but why would I not get the beeps on regular startup (not booting from a cd)?  Does the three beeps mean something else in this situation?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are now running Lion boot the computer and hold down the Command+r keys. That will boot you directly to the Lion Recovery HD partition. That is IF that partition is still on your internal drive and it can be booted. As you say the drive is showing errors it may not boot properly.
In the case that it doesn't boot to the Recovery HD you can use Internet Recovery. That is where your system is booted from over the internet.
Hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a Spinning Globe in the center of the screen. Once that has loaded you can use Disk Utility to check the drive and repair it if it can be repaired. Or you may need a New drive if it can't be repaired.

  • Three beeps and hold

when my macbook pro stays running for a few hours for ie downloading it hangs and starts beeping like three beeps and hold and again
    why this is happening ?

yes, my mac mini did exactly the same thing when I upgraded my ram cards. one of the cards wasn't in all the way and it did that 3 beep thing until I pushed it into the receptors more securely.

  • T400 system hangs at POST screen after updating BIOS 7UET82WW

I have 3 GB memory and Win-7 Ultimate 32 bit OS installed in my T400 system. Recently I had updated the latest BIOS 7UET82WW thru TVSU and ended up with a serious problem. The BIOS update itself was succesfull, but right after reboot my problems started.
    1. The system hangs during startup in POST screen and sometimes boots into OS after a long wait  (20-30 mins)
    2. When I try to press F2 to enter the BIOS, i get a long beep for about 10 seconds and screen becomes white
    3. White screen garbage disappears in few seconds and blinking cursor stays for long time (around 20 -30 mins)
In net, I have to wait for around 30 mins for the system to boot into OS everytime. If I interupt in between by pressing any key, long beep and white screen garbage appears. I am not able to enter the BIOS as well.
After logon to the OS, everything seems to be absolutely perfect. But the problem comes back after reboot or hibernate and resume the system.
Appreciate any solution or feddback from anyone.

My T500 did this as well after the update.  I went into the bios and loaded all the defaults, rebooted.  Went back into the bios and reset my options (discrete only, turn off some unused features) and the system is working normally and Vista is booting as quickly as it had been before the update (and actually can accomplish a reboot).

  • IMac G5 system hang - 2 bad 1GB memory modules?

I am experiencing intermittent system hangs, requiring power off / on to recover. Applications run fine for hours, then everything freezes; a few seconds later the fans spool up full bore. There seems to be no logic to the failure. It happens on many different applications, including Disk Utility. No new software has been added recently (other than Apple software updates). This has been occuring for several weeks.
I repair permissions & run disk verify. When disk utility runs completely without hanging (on verify), everything is ok.
Applecare had me trash the ~/Library/Caches & system caches. No joy. They recommended archive & install beginning with Panther. Reinstall went ok until downloading updates for 10.4.8, then hang (might this suggest a hardware prob?).
Rebooted in target firewire mode the cloned drive, then zero'ed the G5 HDD and restored from clone (SuperDuper!). Everything appeared ok for several days, then the same system hang reappeared. I should mention that in the course of sudying this one, I discovered Virex 7.5 was sucking the processing life from the G5; used the uninstaller to get rid of it & the iMac is quiet again!
I have run the Applecare version of Techtools and the Hardware Test Disk, everything passes.
I could do a clean install of Tiger, then use migration assistant to move data from the clone...if I felt it had a chance to solve it. On the other hand, maybe its a flaky hardware gremlin and I'm wasting my time doing reinstalls, and I should hustle it over to the local Apple store.
Update - took iMac for service at Apple store where it failed under stress test with my 2 GB of memory but ran for an extended period with Apple memory. In an attempt to isolate which of the two 1 GB modules was bad, removed one module. Identical failure after 24 hrs. Howver, swapping out that failing module with the second module, identical hand. That suggests either both 1 GB modules are bad (unikely), or some other hardware issue is the problem.
Problem seems to occur most often when starting playing iTunes, or running Disk Utility (repair permissions).
I suppose the next step is to buy 1 GB of memory from Apple and make it fail again. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your posts, I appreciate it.
Skip - I tried a spare keyboard & mouse. Still failed.
MGW - all software is up to date.
DaddyPaycheck - I downloaded memtestosx. It fails testing each 1GB memory module separately (in different sockets). I'm running in multiuser mode and when it fails the entire iMac freezes up (just like it always does), requiring power off / power on. Is this normal behavior when the memtestosx test fails?
I will plan to test in single user mode as the supplied doc states that if the onboard cache is failing it would pass singleuser (cache apparently disabled in singleuser mode) but fail multiuser. Maybe the onboard cache is bad?
    Thanks.

  • MacBook Air blank screen, no start-up and three beeps - but now fixed?

Hi - My MacBook Air 2011 11in 64GB wouldn't start up for the last three days. It was working fine, then the screen went bonkers and I turned it off by holding down the power button. When I hit the power button again, there was no start-up, the screen stayed black and there were three beeps, short delay, three beeps again. I Googled and it seemed that it was a RAM problem, so I was planning this morning to take the machine to Dr Apple. But just to be sure there was still a problem, I tried starting it one last time and it started up as normal and seems to be working fine now.
Should I still get it checked out? I had been travelling and using it in some pretty hot temperatures when it died, and it's now back at home where it's cooler - could the problem have been something to do with the heat, do you think?
Don't want to use it if I'm making a problem that's there any worse. Much appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Before taking it, run Apple Hardware Test. If your Mac came with an USB drive, insert it and press D key while your Mac is starting. Then, run an extended test and check if it shows a problem.
If your Mac didn't come with an USB drive, press Option and D keys while your Mac is starting and run an extended test. If you see an error message, copy it here

  • Close Front Panel Causes System Hang.

I have an application where there are several front panels that I would like to have open at once, but where when they stop they would close.  I was using the scripting function fp.close - but as the application has got more complicated this seems to work less and less well.  Basically when i hit close, the system hangs for a few seconds, then the time critical stuff i have tends to timeout and then crash, and everything goes funny for a while.
My (uneducated) guess is that when it closes a front panel it drops loads of stuff straight out of memory - in an uncontrolled way.
After going for a cup of coffee it usually sorts itself out.  But clearly this isn't a sustainable solution for my application or my kidneys.
Am I doing something wrong? - Is there something i should do to allow the Vi to finish before i try to close it? Should i be releasing references or somethign to make things better.  I thought about running the close vi sub as a new thread - but not sure if this would actually do anything different.
Attached - the subroutine that i pass a vi ref to.
    Attachments:
    RunningVis_CloseSubVi.vi ‏17 KB

There's nothing in the attached VI that would necessarily cause your problem. I would, however, suggest that you feed your reference through the nodes in proper flow control method rather than branching off like you've done.
When a VI fails to close quickly, I have most often found it's due to open references which aren't explicitly closed. File references, VI references, multiple calls in a loop acquiring the same reference over and over without releasing it, .NET calls not being closed - that kind of thing.

  • [SOLVED]System Hang in Arch Linux

I have tried distributions like ubuntu and fedora in hope for finding a stable system . So I move on to Arch Linux
But this problem also exist on Arch. While using my Arch Linux (including ubuntu and fedora) my system hangs with a black screen with something written on the whole screen which cannot be pasted here as my system hangs and I have to push power button to restart.
So I check my errors.log file and found these errors
Jul  8 22:59:24 localhost kernel: [    1.680013] ata3: softreset failed (device not ready)
Jul  8 22:59:24 localhost kernel: [    7.298612] SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use
Jul  8 22:59:31 localhost kdm_greet[792]: Cannot load /usr/share/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face: No such file or directory
    I have a HCL K21 pdc notebook
Note: In Ubuntu my notebook start with ata1: softreset failed error at boot time
Most often this error occur while watching videos or listening music with VLC
