System Hangs - requires power off, then panic

I have a mac mini that runs all the time at a weekend house. I can access it remotely using Apple Remote Desktop. Recently, the Mini has started to hang. It runs (all lights on) but screen goes dark and machine cannot be ping'ed on network. I tried unplugging all USB and Firewire devices but to no avail. I cannot tell what cause the hang/crash. There is no Panic in the Console Log at time of hang. There is a panic that gets listed at start-up though. This has happened three time now so I am a bit concerned. The last time it happened Oct 30 and machine was reset Nov 6. From the System Log:
Oct 30 16:17:18 HamptonsMacintosh-4 Mail[281]: Mail: SafetyNet not needed - wrongState:0

any ideas what is going on?

Just happened again last night (11/25). Machine stops responding and screen is dark. Happens while Mac Mini is unattended so I cannot say exactly what the cause it. I went through every log in the console and the last entry was:
2009-11-25 19:46:55:791|SyncServer|60712|c10f10|Server|Info| Goodnight, Gracie.
The last file saved on my harddrive (from Indigo events window) was :
2009-11-25 19:39:08 RCS The MasterBedroomTemperature is 58 degrees.
I came to machine after I could not remote into into, fond screen dark and all I could do was restart. Restart came with typical panic message, but it was dated 11/26 (after poweroff restart). I do not know why I keep freezing, but it has happened about 5 times over last 3 months.

  • P1102W Laserjet is dead after it is power off then power up

    A. 1st question : P1102W is dead after power off then back on.  Below are the steps of what I did :
    A1. I bought P1102W on 26Dec2011.  Most updated driver (Win7 32-bit) was then downloaded
A2. I started the installation by clicking the downloaded driver
A3. It installed smoothly, even picked up my Asus wireless router SSID automatically
A4. Eventually, a demo page was printed wirelessly from my notebook PC
A5. Subsequently, printings are also done by iPad2 and iPod Touch, confirming that AirPrint is working
A6. The P1102W is then turned off for 1/2 mins, then turned back on
A7. Both iPad2 and iPod Touch could not find any AirPrint Printer right away
A8. I tried to print a WORD file, but it does not work anymore
    B. 2nd question : IP address changed after 2nd notebook had installed the driver :
B1.  Once the previous steps from section A is done, I immedately tried to do the same installation for my 2nd notebook (Win Vista 32-bit.  I also tired with others notebook with Win7 64-bit or MacBook Air).
B2.  Once the installation is done and the demo page is printed.  I found that the IPaddr of the originally setting has been changed from 192.168.1.4 to 169.254.154.2, or sometimes (after 2nd trails) it becomes all zeros!!!!!!!!!!!!
B3.  I did manually assign the IPaddr to be a fixed IPaddr without using DHCP, but it still does not work.
Anyone can help.  Or I should tell my friends stop getting P1102W just for the purpose to get AirPrint for our iPhone/iPad2/IPod Touch??!!

I just bought the printer and I am having the same issue. Please help.

  • [Solved] System does not power off, hangs at "System Halted"

Not sure if this is systemd or kernel related, and after the recent round of upgrades it happens on one of my computers and not the other.
I'm using systemd and do have systemd-sysvcompat installed, but no daemons are started with initscripts.
When I power off from the KDE desktop using the poweroff icon in the tray, it gets to the point where it says "System Halted" on the console screen
but the computer does not power off. If I power off using the physical power button on the computer, exactly the same thing happens.
However, if I power off using "sudo systemctl start poweroff.target" it works perfectly.
How can I get it to work properly again in KDE or if I hit the power button? Why does it work perfectly on one computer but not the other?

Okay, this has now been solved. Thanks are due to bgc1954 and Trillby for pointing me in the right direction. Very much appreciated.
My search ability, usually very good, completely failed me on this one. However, a few hints was all I needed.
    For the record:
To make the power button poweroff instead of halt: edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf and uncomment HandlePowerKey and make sure its value is set to poweroff.
To make kde poweroff properly, edit /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and look for the [Shutdown] section. Ensure HaltCmd is uncommented and set to /sbin/poweroff.
As to why the behaviour was different on my other computer, for some reason the relevant kdmrc entry on that computer was commented out. Apparently that makes it work correctly. I don't know why they were different, as I don't recall changing either.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus- Does not print; requires power off/on to reset.

I've spend a month trying to resolve this issue.  When printing wirelessly, documents hang in the queue and never print.  When the printer power is cycled off then on, documents will print wirelessly, but only for a temporary period of undetermined time.  The next time I use the computer the problem is repeated.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times.  Running the HP Print and Scan doctor indicates everything is fine.  It isn't.  Your expertise is appreciated.

  • T400: Optical Drive Power Off, Then Disappears

I'm running Win 7 x64 on a T400, and recently installed Power Manager 3.12.  Since 3.11, I've enabled the "Automatic Optical Drive Power Off" feature.  In Vista, this worked fine, where once the drive was powered off (and the light on it would go off), I'd eject it and it'd automatically power back on.  Or, in My Computer, I could right-clik on it and power it back on.
Now, in Win 7, once it powers off, it disappears from My Computer completely.  On top of that, the light on the drive stays on, and after a while a different thing shows up in My Computer under "Other" and all it says is "(Powered Off)", but it's not the optical drive.  Clicking "Power On" on this phantom device does nothing, and ejecting and closing the optical drive does not get it to show up again either.
The only way I've found to re-enable the optical drive is to remove it physically from the laptop and re-insert it.  Then, it'll reappear in My Computer, but the mysterious Powered Off device still remains as well.
Is anyone else having a similar issue?  I'm leaning toward the assumption it's one of the many bugs in the Win 7 Power Manager (that along with the Dock Eject Action not functioning properly).  I'm at the point where I'm ready to just completely uninstall the Power Manager, as it only seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Sorry to bump this thread, but it seems that this issue is still not resolved. I have just completed an install of windows 7 on my T400, which orginally had windows vista preloaded. Everything is fine, execept for this optical drive issue. Upon auto-power off of the optical drive, the ultrabay slot light does not turn off even though my computer reports the optical drive as powered off. The drive then becomes inoperable until restart, even if you plug in the computer. By inoperable, I mean that windows no longer recognizees it.
Disabling the feature in power manager is not solving the issue however, because that also removes the power saving advantage that this feature has. I have installed both power manager (3.40) and the power managment driver. They were first installed using system update, and I have since removed and reinstalled them manually with no change. I have googled for a solution, but I have only found this thread to describe the problem most accurately. I don't know what I can do to solve this problem.
I have switchable graphics, and the optical drive is a dvd writer,

  • Hanging on Power Off

This has happened to me about 3 times. In the evening I turn my phone off and plug it in. I press and hold power off button and release after the 3 second count. The Blackberry word comes up and the phone sits there. sometimes it will disappear but you can there is still a faint backlight visible. I power back on again and then try again and it usually works second time. Anyone else have this or am I the only lucky one or doing something wrong? Its not a huge deal nor any sort of deal breaker for me, would like to figure it out though.

I think you might be on to something. I turned wifi off before powering down last night and it shut off without a hitch. I'll try it again a few times and report back.

  • Updating system - do not power off. During shutdown.

Help.....when I shutdown my t420 and am conneced to external power, I consistently get a message during the shutdown process, something like "applying update 1 of 1. Do not power off or unplug your computer'. This is very consistent, happens every time, whether I have <knowingly> installed any updates or not. This causes the Thinkpad t420 to take a long time to power off.
I can't tell what is being updated or if this a real message or just some residual stuff from a past update.
any help/pointers on how to clear this would be appreciated.

do you have automatic windows update switched on in the control panel under Windows Update.

  • Firefox will disable my HP L7680( error message " turn power off then on again") when using either the printer icon or print in file pull down. .

This happens for em & other print request in my online brokerage account. It has no problem printing PDF files. When the message appears, four lights start blinking at the same time on the auto answer button, on off button, lower SD slot, and the light under the OK button with the directional tabs. At that point I have to power down the printer and change to ie8 to print these. My ie8 browser has no problems with any printing, but it does not function when trying to add notes in my Comcast address book

Mowaffaq, you may want to determine whether you are making those changes in the master printing preferences (versus the adjusting the session printing preferences from within your application).
Click "Start", click "Printers and Faxes" (or "Devices and Printers"), right-click your printer, and select "Printing Preferences". On the "Paper/Quality" tab, you should be able to specify A4 as your default paper for all future print jobs.
    Hope that helps.

  • IMac G5 system hang - 2 bad 1GB memory modules?

I am experiencing intermittent system hangs, requiring power off / on to recover. Applications run fine for hours, then everything freezes; a few seconds later the fans spool up full bore. There seems to be no logic to the failure. It happens on many different applications, including Disk Utility. No new software has been added recently (other than Apple software updates). This has been occuring for several weeks.
I repair permissions & run disk verify. When disk utility runs completely without hanging (on verify), everything is ok.
Applecare had me trash the ~/Library/Caches & system caches. No joy. They recommended archive & install beginning with Panther. Reinstall went ok until downloading updates for 10.4.8, then hang (might this suggest a hardware prob?).
Rebooted in target firewire mode the cloned drive, then zero'ed the G5 HDD and restored from clone (SuperDuper!). Everything appeared ok for several days, then the same system hang reappeared. I should mention that in the course of sudying this one, I discovered Virex 7.5 was sucking the processing life from the G5; used the uninstaller to get rid of it & the iMac is quiet again!
I have run the Applecare version of Techtools and the Hardware Test Disk, everything passes.
I could do a clean install of Tiger, then use migration assistant to move data from the clone...if I felt it had a chance to solve it. On the other hand, maybe its a flaky hardware gremlin and I'm wasting my time doing reinstalls, and I should hustle it over to the local Apple store.
Update - took iMac for service at Apple store where it failed under stress test with my 2 GB of memory but ran for an extended period with Apple memory. In an attempt to isolate which of the two 1 GB modules was bad, removed one module. Identical failure after 24 hrs. Howver, swapping out that failing module with the second module, identical hand. That suggests either both 1 GB modules are bad (unikely), or some other hardware issue is the problem.
Problem seems to occur most often when starting playing iTunes, or running Disk Utility (repair permissions).
I suppose the next step is to buy 1 GB of memory from Apple and make it fail again. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your posts, I appreciate it.
Skip - I tried a spare keyboard & mouse. Still failed.
MGW - all software is up to date.
DaddyPaycheck - I downloaded memtestosx. It fails testing each 1GB memory module separately (in different sockets). I'm running in multiuser mode and when it fails the entire iMac freezes up (just like it always does), requiring power off / power on. Is this normal behavior when the memtestosx test fails?
I will plan to test in single user mode as the supplied doc states that if the onboard cache is failing it would pass singleuser (cache apparently disabled in singleuser mode) but fail multiuser. Maybe the onboard cache is bad?
    Thanks.

  • Monitor flickering requires power unplug/replug

I'm using an HP w2558hc monitor on a T60 running Windows XP Professional with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 display adapter. Everytime I reboot the laptop there's a rapid left/right jiggling of the display, which is noticeable enough but more so when you look toward the edges of the screen. By trial and error I found if I unplug the monitor from the wall power outlet, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in the problem goes away until the next reboot.
HP tells me it must be the laptop's display adapter because they had me plug the monitor into an old Dell 2100 tower I had hanging around (Windows 2000 on an Intel 810 graphics card) and it did not exhibit the problem (albeit that 10 yo PC only went to 1600 x 1200). Also because the flickering doesn't start until the Win logon prompt appears, which is when they say the graphics adapter kicks in. And theres no flicker if I turn the monitor on without connecting it to the laptop to display the "No Video Input" message.
I have tried the following remedies without success.
     - Updated the T60 graphics driver to the most recent one Windows Update could find (version 8.362.0.0, 4/5/2007)
     - Uninstalled the HP driver and went plug and play
I posted this if case anyone has a similar problem, at least I found a workaround. The unplug option is only slightly annoying, although if the adapter is truly at fault I can't see why unplugging the power cord stops the shaking. (Simpy cycling the monitor off and on with the power switch won't fix it. I power off, then unplug.)
If anyone has any other ideas I might try I'd be glad to hear them. Lenovo hardware support suggested I try installing the Presentation Director, has anyone fixed any similar problems that way?

My problem is that unplugging the monitor does not help.
By changing the resolution a few times I can fix the screen flicker problem but then get a single verticle line of horizontal lines on the right side of my monitor that increase in speed as time goes by.
It is the lesser of two evils so I just use 5/6 of my monitor and cannot see the lines against a black background.

  • I have an iPhone 4s.  After upgrading to iOS 6 (and 6.0.1) my sound occasionally just stops working and I have to power off/on to get it back working again.  Anyone else having this issue?

My sounds occasionally stops working after upgrading to iOS 6.  Is anyone else having sound issues with iOS 6 or greater?

I am having this same issue on my iPhone 4. The most recent update to iOS 6.1 didn't fix it either. Has anyone found a fix for this problem? It doesn't happen often, maybe every third day or so but requires power off, power on to bring the sound back.

  • Can't Slide to power off

    my ipad 2 is 16G 3G,
yesterday, i update my ipad 2 via itunes from 4.3.5 to 5.1 then i can't "slide to power off", it just restart to operate.
then i use a clean desktop to update, it still happen...
    anyone can help me....

I understand what the problem is. Did you try to reset the iPad? After you reset it you should be able to power the device off completely.
If you tried the reset and you still cannot use the slide to power off, then you have another issue. But you have to try the reset, hold down both buttons - wait for the apple logo to appear on the screen - let go of th buttons and let the iPad restart completely - then try to power off.
Did you do all of that?
