10.8.2 EndNote X4.0.2 no longer works in Word 2011

EndNote X4.0.2 no longer works in Word 2011.  I can't insert a citation without seeing the attached message and Word freezing.  This is the latest in a long line of Mountain Lion frustrations.  I wish I have never upgraded from Snow Leopard.

When I view this discussion, I can see the picture. Apparently others cannot.  Trying again to add it.

Yes, I make backups regularly.  For the record, the makers of EndNote are aware of this issue and encourage contacting Apple.  And it's not "won't" update, it's "can't."

  • Has anyone successfully gotten Endnote X5 to work with Word 2011 on OS 10.7.5?

I just get the error in Word that Word can't fire the event.  The Endnote toolbar does not show up in Word.

Endnote sys that X5 is not compatible with Mountain Lion due to a "bug" in the OS and suggests buying their "new" Endnote X6. They also offered two workarounds so far that have not worked saying that it is Apples responsibility to fix this "bug". Their support replied to me as follows:
Thank you for contacting Thomson Reuters Technical Support.
EndNote X5 is not officially compatible with Mac 10.8. The issue that you face is due to a known bug in Mac 10.8.2 update for Apple's Mountain Lion operating system.
If you would like to read a technical description of this underlying bug within Apple's 10.8.2 operating system update, the following blog post outlines the issue:
    http://brian-webster.tumblr.com/post/32830692042/a-workaround-for-aesendmessage- hanging-on-os-x-10-8-2
For more information on EndNote’ compatibility please refer to the following link:
    http://help.thomson.com/default.asp?portalid=TSCINT&article=113230
In order to work around this issue until the underlying problem is addressed by Apple, please follow the steps given below:
    1. Open your Activity Monitor. Activity Monitor is found inside a folder called "Utilities", which is inside your "Applications" folder.
    2. With the Activity Monitor running, choose "All Processes" from the "Show" drop-down and then sort the display by the "Process Name" column by clicking the column's label.
    3. After sorting this list by Process Name, look for a process called 'appleeventsd'. If you are able to find the appleeventsd process, highlight this entry and click "Quit Process".
    4. When you are prompted to confirm this action, press "Force Quit".
    5. Once appleeventsd has been reset by the Force Quit selection, switch back to EndNote to see if you're still experiencing slowness.
    6. Also try inserting citations in Word and see if you are getting any error message.
As you mentioned, EndNote X6.0.2 update was released to address this issue. Since you have EndNote X5 you will not be able to install this patch for a permanent fix on this. And since you already own a previous version of EndNote, you will be entitled for an upgrade version of EndNote X6. These upgrade versions are priced lesser than the full versions. For EndNote X4 and X5 users, they will be entitled for a 30% discount on this upgrade price considering this bug. If you wish to avail this offer, please visit:http://endnote.com/buy/online and use the coupon code: techup.
Please visit the following Knowledge Base article for more information:

If you wish to use EndNote X5 and if the tools are still missing in Word, please make sure that the Visual basic component for Microsoft Word 2011 is installed. Visual Basic is required for the use of EndNote X5 with Word 2011. If it is not installed, run a custom installation of Office 2011, selecting Visual Basic for Applications. This component of Office is mandatory for Cite While You Write tools to work.
If the issue continues, it possible that the issue can happen if the Word documents Gallery is set to open. Please check to make sure this option is not checked in Word.
    1) In Word, go to the Word menu / Preferences / General.
    2) Uncheck the option labeled Open Word Documents Gallery when application opens.
    3) Press OK.
    4) Quit Word by going to Word menu / Quit Word.
    5) Open EndNote with your library.
    6) Open Word.
This will get the EndNote toolbar appearing in Word. If the issue continues, it is possible that the EndNote Cite While You Write add-ins might be disabled in Word. Please follow the below steps to re-enable the tools as follows:
    a. Open a Word document.
    b. Go to "Tools > Templates and Add-Ins".
    c. You should see the below EndNote files listed under "Global Templates and Add-ins"
    EndNote CWYW Commands.dot
    EndNote CWYW Word 2011.bundle
    d. If any of these file(s) are unchecked, check it, and click OK.
If the above files are not listed in "Global Templates and Add-ins", then I would recommend you to follow the steps given to check the Word Startup folder and set that in the Customizer:
    1. In Word, click the Word menu next to the apple and choose Preferences.
    2. Click File Locations.
    3. Click on Startup and then click Modify.
    4. Browse to Applications---Microsoft Office 2011---Office---Startup---Word. Click Choose. (Please note: For non English version of Word, the name of the Startup folder may be different. Please choose your closest language equivalent in this location).
    5. Click OK on the Preferences window.
    6. Close Word.
    7. Open EndNote and your library.
    8. Click on the EndNote menu next to the apple.
    9. Choose Customizer.
    10. Check the option for Cite While You Write. Click Next.
    11. Click Next and the process should complete----click “Done”.
If the tools are still not present in the Tools menu of Word, please close Word then copy and paste the EndNote CWYW Word 2011.bundle file into your Word startup folder:
Bundle file: Applications | EndNote X5 | Cite While You Write | EndNote CWYW Word 2011.bundle
Word startup folder: Applications | Microsoft Office 2011 | Office | Startup | Word
Close and reopen Word. Please check whether the EndNote tools appear in Word and that you are able to click on them.
Once again I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please check if this helps in resolving your issue and kindly let me know if you need any further assistance.
Based on the solution provided above, this case will be closed and no further action is required on your part. However, if this does not resolve your issue, please reply to this email and your case will be immediately reopened for additional support.

My Endnote X4 software does not show up in my toolbar of WORD 2011. How do I tackle this problem?

  • TS3587 EndNote plug-in still doesn't work

You need to buy EndNote X to get access to the bibliography.

  • How to Change the (Missing) Font in Endnotes

Hello and thanks (again) in advance,
My preflight report showed that I have 170 errors: they are all missing fonts in the numbers of the endnotes.
Some of the Endnotes are in the Times New Roman Font, but for some reason, 170 endnotes are not. This is a font problem with the "number" part of the endnotes -- the text in the endnotes is all Times New Roman.
What I would like to do is to change the font from the missing one (Cambria Regular) to Times New Roman.
The endnotes were imported when I placed this MS-Word document into InDesign.
Here's what I tried, that failed:
    1. Fix the font problem when I opened the file, and InDesign showed missing fonts. (This fixed the fonts -- changed them from Cambria to Times New Roman) for all the text, but did not touch the numbers in the endnotes.
    2. Search and Replace for the number of the Endnote -- the numbers were ignored by the search.
    3. Search and Replace for the number of the Endnote, with the "Include Footnotes" button highlighted
    4. Search and Replace for Cambia Regular text (although I might not have done that correctly.) ... I left the "Find What" box blank, and in the "Find Format" box I selected Cambria Regular. ... Nothing was found.
    5. I deleted one of the numbers -- endnote 202 -- "by hand", and then retyped the number. This did change the font, but it had the bad effect of ruining the endnote numbering system: it made the next endnote (number 203) below it into number "1" and the endnote after that "2"
Also, I wondered if it "broke" the entire endnote system -- If there is some connection between the number that I deleted, and the corresponding superscript number in the text itself.
Here (below) is a screen shot of my pre-flight report.
You can see that some of the numbers in the endnotes,  (for example: 200 and 202) are in the correct font; but endnote numbers 201, 203, 204 are not in Times New Roman.
I am stuck ... Suggestions are welcome and appreciated !
    ZtG

Since ID doesn't really support endnotes, I suspect they were imported as a numbered list, particulary considering the uselectablility and find/change sympotoms you describe. Bullets and numbers in lists aren't "real" characters that can selected.
Find font should probably have done the trick if the numbers were assigned a style in the list definition AND you checked the update styles when changing all box in Find Font, so I'm also going to guess that you either didn't check the box or there is no style assigned to the numbers (and I suppose it's possible they aren't really a list).
The best solution would be, I think, to first verify that they the endnotes are a list, and to assign a character style to the numbers.

  • Opinion on Endnote X3 and Pages 09

I'm considering purchasing Endnote X3 for use with both Pages 09 and Word 2008. I'd be interested in any anecdotal feelings, criticisms, and experiences that some of you may already have. Do you consider your purchase of Endnote a worthy edition for use with Pages?
My goal is to eventually use Pages more than Word for day to day work, and Endnote would be helpful in that regard.
Also, can I use Endnote with both Word and Pages on the same Mac? I'm not speaking of using the same document in both programs, but strictly separate projects. But say, for instance, I have a master list of sources in Endnote, can the program and sources be used with both word processors?
    Thanks.

Hi Rick, Endnote works fairly well with Pages – even though the integration could still be improved. As I also have come to prefer writing with Pages I would go for it.
Of course, you can use the same Endnote library for both your Pages and your Word documents.
The only thing that I find a true nuisance is that the Endnotes references will be lost as such if you transform a Pages document into a Word document. All your Endnote references will be turned into ordinary text. This is a real obstacle to sharing files if you intend to work on them with somebody else.
    Best, Nick

  • Cannot edit bibliography created with Endnote

I am trying out the Pages 09/Endnote feature. I find that I cannot edit the Bib that was created by Endnote as I was entering the citations. When I click on the Bib the whole thing is highlighted. A double click results in bringing up the manage citations window in Endnote. The Bib format that my school uses is difficult to reproduce solely within Endnote, so if this is going to work I need to be able to do a manual edit at the end. Any suggestions, or is this not happening for others?

Try highlighting the bibliography that was created by EndNote. Copy and paste it into a new Pages document. You will get a notice that "This bibliography was created in a different document. The bibliography will be pasted as text and won’t automatically update."
The bibliography can then be edited and pasted back to the original as text. You will not recreate a bibliography with EndNote.
I converted by PhD dissertation from Word to Pages'09 due to the new integration with EndNote. I have been very pleased with the result. Pages has its own quirks that I needed to learn, but it has a much more predictable approach to inserting tables and graphics.

  • Endnote fields not recognized Word- Pages or Pages- Word

Endnote X3 is working fine inserting citations into Pages or Word files, but when I open a Word-generated .doc file with Endnote citations in Pages, or export to a .doc file with Endnote citations from Pages, the citations are no longer recognized and Endnote considers the file "empty" of references. All software is up to date. Anyone have any experience like this? Better yet, anyone have a solution?_
    Endnote X3
    Pages '09
    Word 2008

None of the above. I am simply trying to work with the files moving between the two apps. I get .doc files to edit, which contain Endnote inserts, but I want to work on them in Pages and then send them back in Word format with usable Endnote fields

  • Why does Mac Word using Endnote crash?

Hi all, I am using mac word 2011 with Endnote x6, and now Word crashes each time I use the CWYW search function. I have reinstalled both the Endnote and the Office package but the same problem reappears. Any suggestions what to try next, I'm at the end of my rope with this problem.
    Best, Peter

I found a solution to this: the endnote library must have been corrupted or there were conflicting copies of it on the computer. I removed all Endmnote library files from the computer and then only saved one intact back to make sure Endnote does not try to use a corrupted one and get jammed because of it.

  • Endnote Formatting Problems

I have a book that I'm formatting that has a lot of Endnotes - many of which are longer than 1 page in length.  This is causing major problems with parts of endnotes being invisible and others leaving just 1 note on a page and the rest of the page blank!!
Is there any way to fix this problem?!

    try the following code
    import java.text.DecimalFormat;
    DecimalFormat precisionTwo = new DecimalFormat( "0.00" );
System.out.println ( precisionTwo.format([Put your variable in here]) );best of luck

  • In support of Pages 5

I have had the fortunate expeerience of never having had to use Pages 09. I started out right here on Pages 5. Now updated slightly. I was a long time MS Word user, but frankly - don't miss it one little bit.
Pages 5 does what I need to do.
I have just installed Endnote 7, and Cite While YOu Write (CWYW), and it all appears to be working fine together.
I have two books so far writte with Pages 5, and exported to ePub format, then uploaded to both Kindloe and iBooks. The ePub files open fine on the mac in iBooks, as wellas the Kindle Previewer. Fo iBooks there is also the Book Proofer, with works great with the Pages 5, exported ePubs.
I can understand the frustrations of those who started out with earlier versions of various packages,m including Pages, to suddenly find their work suddenly inaccessible. But the cautionary notes attatched to ALL upgrades apply equally to Pages. Backup your work - always. If you import an old version of a file into a new version of the program, it will invariably tell you that a conversion is taking place, and will probably be non-reversable. Make a copy of your document, and open the copy. And I don't care if it's Windows or Mac. I just lost an entire server through an incautious upgrade from XP to Win 8. Blew the lot away. Now I'm on a Mac, being so fed up with Windows that I have sworn off it forever. But... whose fault? Mine. I didn't RTFM....
So if you upgraded to a NEW release of Pages, and didn't preserve the old one Just In Case ... them's the breaks.
But aas for Pages 5. It works fine for me. Fiction, academic papers, note taking, what ever. Of course there are things I could use in it, but if I list them, it ends up looking like a package that is all things to all people. Such a program doesn't exist.
And now that Microsoft have gone to the "Pay by the Month" subscription for their software. I really don't want to know. I've left Adobe for that very reason, and other deeper concerns about them, I can't just buy Word for the Mac. I have to subscribe. So in place of Photoshop I use Gimp. In place of Word I use Pages, and iBooks when I have a need.
So my bottom line - I happily use Pages 5. A nice piece of software, that can only improve. I'm also sure that removing over a hundred options from the previous version had a lot to do with the new version being fully 64bit complient, and needed a complete rework.

What "cautionary notes attached to ALL upgrades"?
There weren't any with Pages 5!
In fact most users didn't even know the automatic upgrade had happened until their work was ruined. Without warning and synching the bad copy over every copy thanks to iCloud.
Who expected to be ambushed by Apple?
…and wait till you have lost your first major job, and can't recover a thing.
Good luck RTFM. There isn't one.
Tell me exactly how being "64 bit" has improved your work in any way. So much so that not being able to do 100 things that were possible, is now not possible.
Do you always parrot what other people tell you, no matter how nonsensical, without actually thinking for yourself?
    Peter
btw That program that doesn't exist, does exist. It is Pages '09, and it is no handicap that it actually works.

  • How can I force a paragraph style without losing italic?

This has been annoying me for ages. I work on documents in Word, applying italic to book titles etc, and then import into indesign. I apply a paragraph style and three times out of four the bits of italic are preserved. However, the fourth time the paragraph style doesn't take (probably because of the presence of italic) and I have to force it to do so by using Alt-click. Invariably the italic is then replaced by roman.
It's happening just now with a whole lot of footnotes and endnotes in a book I'm working on and means I have to go back through them all, manually applying italic to my book titles and references. Is there any way to force an endnote/footnote paragraph style without losing the italic text?
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Tom.

I'm not sure that forward planning is so necessary here.
If your only concern is losing italics when importing from Word, create,
in InDesign, an italic character style. Then do a search and replace
throughout the InDesign document (after you've placed the Word file)
searching for italics formatting, and replacing with your italics
    character style.
That will prevent you from losing your italics formatting.
Repeat for bold, bold italics, superscript, subscript, and anything else
    the author uses.
There are some scripts that help in this process (I think one of them is
    called "preptext", by Jongware).
If you want a comprehensive solution that can find every type of
formatting override and creates and applies the appropriate character
style, check out my "Create Character Styles from Overrides" script,
available under the scripting tab on freelancebookdesign.com.

  • How can I export comments and tracked changes from Pages to Word?

I just purchased Pages and tried to export a couple pages of my document to Microsoft Word so I could send them for review to a client who does not have Pages; however, when I copy-pasted into Word, none of the comments or tracked changes showed up in the doc., only the finished product. I've tried updating my software, but that hasn't worked. Is there a way to fix this?

Here is what the Pages User Guide says:
" Exporting Pages Documents to Other File Formats
If you want to share your Pages documents with those who aren’t using the latest version of Pages, you can export your document to file formats that they may be able to use on their computers or other devices:
    • PDF: You can view PDF files in iBooks, and view or print them in Preview and Safari. You can edit them with a PDF application. Fonts used in the Pages document are preserved in the PDF file.
Hyperlinks in your Pages document are exported to the PDF file. Hyperlinks are also created in the PDF file for table of contents entries, footnotes and endnotes, webpages, email addresses, and bookmarks.
    • Microsoft Word: You can open and edit Microsoft Word files in Microsoft Word on a computer running Mac OS X or Windows.
Because of text layout differences between Microsoft Word and Pages, an exported Word document may contain a different number of pages than its Pages counterpart. You may notice other differences, as well, for example, table layouts and some special typographic features may not be identical. Some graphics (particularly those using transparency) may not display as well. Charts created in Pages appear as MS Graph objects, which you can edit in Microsoft Word.
    • RTF: You can open and edit RTF files in many different word processors. RTF files retain most of the text formatting and graphics.
    • Plain text: You can open and edit plain text files in many text editing applications, such as TextEdit. Exporting to plain text removes all document and text formatting, and images aren’t exported. ePub: You can open ePub files for reading in the iBooks application on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, or in any ePub file reader. After you export your document to ePub format, you must transfer it to your device to read it in iBooks. To learn more about optimizing a document for ePub format, exporting it, and transferring it to your device, see “Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks” on page 257.
If your Pages document is password-protected, the password-protection is removed from the new file that's created upon export. However, if you export to the PDF file format, you can apply a new password at the time of export. "

  • Just discovered I need a reference tool for research reports with pages...

I love the great tutorial that tells you to insert a function that does not come standard with pages.  One would really think a bibliography tool or simple endnote feature would be pretty basic for a word processor.
So.....EndNote is the featured program on the tutorial....though I don't believe it is made by Apple (?).
Q:  Are there other options for a program that will do research report-level citations in Pages?  Or do I have to now spend 2x what I paid for the entire iWorks suite for this simple luxury?

    You can tell Apple here:

(Though it's 7 years now they have not added that feature)

  • When is Apple going to fix the season pass for tv shows (The Walking Dead Season 2 for me)?

Apple do you ever plan on fixing the season pass system?
I can not download The Walking Dead episode three. This isn't the first show this has happened to me.
It's frustrating since one would think you would work extra hard to make sure your season pass holders are happy. Afterall we pay for a whole season up front as compared to your other customers and the savings we get from buying a season pass are minimal. It's not like we are paying half off the season price.
A little consideration in regards to those of us paying up front would be appreciated.

Feedback falls on deaf ears, it would seem, given I know that many of us have used that avenue.  And no, I haven't noticed the other 90+ missing features, as I am unable to use the program due to it not being compatible with Endnote.  And yes, at present I am using Pages 09 whilst waiting for a fix.
I don't at all mean to diminish the importance of anyone elses frustration and complaint about a feature that has gone or no longer works.  This one is mine .  And for me and a large number of users it makes the program unusable.  Endnote is a program used by many universities and other institutions and relied on by many staff and students worldwide.  I just think that when an issue means you can no longer use the software, I would have hoped for some sort of indication from Apple that there will be a fix.  But perhaps the features you mention also make the program unusable?
Anyway, maybe I'll give a review a go......
