10.9.4 Server client logins hanging

I have a new MacPro running 10.9.4 with Server 3.1.2. After running for a few hours, it stops accepting new logins until I restart it.
I've been seeing errors from xscertd-helper in the system log, with what looks like a randomly garbled entry at the end of the line (this garbled text varies each time I restart the Mac):
Aug 29 12:54:10 authmaster.blahblah.org xscertd-helper[289]: Failed to find CRL, unknown CA : êsAwˇ
Aug 29 12:54:14 authmaster.blahblah.org xscertd-helper[289]: Failed to find CRL, unknown CA : êsAwˇ
Eventually, servermgrd starts throwing event_handle errors and that's more or less when the logins stop working.

This machine was in the box a couple of weeks ago, and the server & OS is a completely fresh install with all new users, connecting to a new SAN for storage. Sessions are AFP. We're using network home directories stored on the SAN.
I'm looking for suggestions on what might be wrong, and where I might start debugging the xscertd-helper errors.
Thanks!
R.

Okay, some progress. I started looking around for the error message in Google and ran into this posting: Replica Issues
This seemed to suggest that a person with a replication problem was getting almost exactly the same kind of errors. Between that and the fact that I was seeing some errors related to contacting one of my replica servers, I decided to nuke the replica and see what happened. As a result, the xscert-helper error seems to have cleared up and I'm no longer seeing any warnings related to the replica server, either.
Next step will be to recreate the replica and see whether the errors recur.

  • Solaris 10 x86 login hanging

    We are experiencing some odd behavior with our Solaris 10 machine. We installed it in January and everything was working fine up to about March. Since March we've been seeing an issue with the login hanging. This happens when running command via rsh or ssh (e.g. "ssh [machine] ls -la"). It also occurs if you try and telnet to the machine.
    We currently have a script that polls several machines in our environment including this one using "ssh [machine] uname -a" just to make sure the machine is up and running.
    About once a week we can't login to the machine with the id we always use, builder. However logging in as root still works. Rebooting fixes the problem every time. Any ideas as to what might be the problem or how to debug it?

  • How to set up local server to use a remote server for login authentication?

    Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
    We are trying to set up a "sub-network" (dont' know if this is the right terminology) using a 10.4 Server OS, to manage a set of clients... the trick is that the client login/home directory information is on a different remote server, and shall remain there, for the most part.
    To make it easy to understand here's the environment:
    *Local Server:* 10.4 G4 Server Quicksilver 1G dual--we have total control of this one
    *Main/remote server:* 10.5 Xserve.. don't know which vintage--we have very very very little input on this machine.. effectively at the mercy of the sysadmin of this system who is very conservative in changing anything (hence the need for a separate server to install applications and client machine-specific profiles, etc since the Xserve admin refuses do it). This serves MacBooks/MacBookPros and few iMacs. (no Windows PC.. as that group of comptuers have their own server)
    client: ~20 eMacs/iBooks all running 10.4.
    use environment: elementary school-->very low network demand (no e-mail, just running local apps linking to server(s) for licensing and login, and some file saving small files on remote server, user preferences, etc).
    The remote server (the Xserve) has all the login authentication, as well as the home directories. every school year, the directories get updated as new students enroll and old students graduate. Currently all the clients are directly linked to the Xserve via LDAP while we bring the local server on-line.
    the local sever (our G4 Quicksilver) will have few network applications that will support the client machines. We also will be setting up computer accounts and groups for our clients so that we can properly set their environments (the Xserve admin will not do this on the Xserve, so currently all the clients are connecting to the server as a "guest computer" from what little I understand watching what was done)
    now, what is the best way to approach this type of set up with minimal "inconvenience" of the Xserve admin?
    I am pretty experienced with standalone UNIX and macOS X administration, but a novice to this whole Server and network setup thing. Any suggestions, instructions, pointers to URLs with how-tos is much appreciated. I am not afraid to use Terminal (grew up on UNIX before GUI), etc., and willing to try safe but unconventional setups if that is what's needed...
    thanks for any help!

    Oh never mind.... I figured it out myself helps to read up on the manuals. d'oh. sorry for the bandwidth waste...

  • Email security Q: Connection to server succeeded; login not required

    Hi everyone
    I ran the Mail Connection Doctor on my mac at home this morning as I was having trouble sending an email.  One of my email accounts (SMTP) has come back with:
    "Connection to server succeeded; login not required. "
    I am just wondering what that means security wise? As it is my work email I am a bit worried that perhaps the IT people didn't set it up right? They've been having a lot of trouble with someone spoofing the boss's email too.
    Does that mean that anyone who knows this email servers details can just use it?
    All my other email accounts come back with "Connection and login to server succeeded".

    Dear Samir,
    In order to try to resolve the issue, please do the following steps :-
    1. Go to Add/Remove Program --> Uninstall SAP Business One Client.
    2. Go to C:\Program Files\SAP, then take a backup of the SAP Business One Folder and
        then delete the SAP Business One folder.
    3. Go to Start --> Run --> %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\SAP\
        Then delete the SAP Business One Folder.
    4. Now reinstall the SAP Business One Client application from the B1_SHR.
    Now you can login and enter all the details information and then log out from SAP Business One
    application. You can open the application again and check this issue.
    Note : Please make sure that the Windows user has read and write access to the above two folders
              as per step (2) and (3).

  • Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server clients lose remote printer queues after logoff

    There are similar issues to this already on the forums but not precisely like this as far as I can tell, and I have tried all the fixes mentioned in those other threads.
    Windows 2008R2 terminal server connecting to a 2008R2 print server. A script maps a connection to the print server on login. Users can browse the print server, connect to print queues to add them, and the queues work OK at first. As soon as they logoff/login
    again, the queues still appear in their list of printers but cannot be selected for printing ('Print' button is greyed out).
    Domain administrator users can print OK always; this is only affecting regular-user accounts, so it is probably a security/permissions issue. Print queues configured on the terminal server itself are OK, this only affects the queues on the
    print server.
    No errors are generated in the Event Logs. No failures seen for the print spooler or anything else.
    I have added Everyone with Full Control to C:\windows\system32\spool on the terminal server. Tried giving full permissions to all in the printer properties. Cleaned out all registry keys in Client Side Rendering Print Provider as mentioned in some other
    threads. In group policy, client printer redirection and LPT port redirection is allowed, use Easy Print driver first, and the print server is in the Intranet zone for low security. The issue happens for all print queues on the print server with a variety
    of drivers so I don't think it is driver-related.

    A bad GPO being applied ??
    If you isolate a user, remove all GPO (even loopback's one), connect manually to a printqueue to make him install's one. Logoff and reconnect and check again if the printqueue work good. The only right that could block you is the driver's installation, but
    I really sure that you don't have that issue (as it would be logged anyway)
    The admin. account often have less GPO that apply to him.

  • Client Login Procedure

    Our business involves sending out topical economic and financial research in multiple daily e-mails to our clients. We wish to prevent e-mail forwarding of this research to non-clients. While there seems to be nothing to prevent e-mail forwarding itself, we hope to control access to our research by using attached PDF files.
    The solution seems to be Policy Server, but I have an initial question about client login. What exactly does it mean that clients must log in to Policy Server before they are allowed to view a PDF sent to them? Is this done automatically when the client tries to open a PDF, or must they do this prior to attempt opening the file, and must they do this before every PDF file sent to them (we send several every day). If the latter, most of our clients would object to this extra step each time. And does this mean we need to open our firewall to the server for all clients?
    Thanks

I wonder if there is a port forwarding solution that would open up the firewall just to policy server requests, but still, it sounds like a not very secure situation. There must be something within an LDAP server that will secure the server.

    One other thing...the web application should be configured to run SSL (https). This is a
    requirement of Policy Server and will encrypt all communication between the client and server.
    Regarding your security concerns...Policy Server doesn't need to be running on a computer outsite
    the firewall...it just needs to be accessible from outside the firewall. This is how many corporate
    websites are set up.

  • Client login +cms

    Hi,
    Maybe I bite more than I can chew but this is what I want to make. On a
    small site I have to create a client login. On this website my client must
    be able to generate a log&pass that sends his clients to a specific page where
    they can read a comment and review 1 or 2 video clips. So he must be able to add some text and to hook up the clips.
    The whole setup is small. We're talking around 5 clients logging in to 5
    unique pages. Maybe even 3 will do. So client1 > can only view secure page1, client 2 >
    can only view secure page 2, etc.
    What is the best solution for this situation? I have little experience with
    creating a secure area (only MyLocked Area) but no experience with a cms
    yet. The site is hosted on a server which supports php, perl, cgi-bin and
    mysql. I'm working with GL CS2, OS 10.4.11.
    TIA, Stoli

    Since it's only a few required pages it might be easiest to use an .htaccess file. If your server supports them. They are supported by Apache servers and can be created by hand or through a c-panel interface. What your doing is simply password protecting some directories. Here's a tutorial on how to do it by hand.
    Set up pages like this:
    main_page
          subdir1/index.html
         subdir2/index.html
         subdir3/index.html
         subdir4/index.html
         subdir5/index.html
    Then make htaccess files to give each each subdir it's own username/passwords.
    Someone enters the main page and selects who they are. This links them to the appropriate subdir where they are asked for their proper username/password to enter.

  • In AIR 3.x, a socket write()+flush() on a client will hang app if peer adverts TCP ZERO WINDOW

    In AIR 3.x, a socket write() + flush() on a client will hang (and freeze the entire app) if the socket peer advertises a ZERO TCP Window, i.e. no space available in peer receiver's socket buffer.
    AIR on Windows insists that the developer flush() the socket in order to write (any data at all).  When the peer (receiver) advertises a 0 byte tcp window, the client flush() call can sometimes take 10 seconds (i.e. 10000 milliseconds), whereas normally it should take 10 to 50 milliseconds.
    Additionally, AIR stayed in hung position.  Since the socket had TCP KEEPALIVE option enabled (at the server), the socket stayed open.  I let it stay hung overnight.  The next day when I rebooted the server, the socket got closed and finally the AIR program "RETURNED FROM the sock.flush()" call.  A timestamp before and after the call to flush() showed that the flush() call was in hung state for 56472475 milliseconds, i.e. 15.7 hours!  After it returned from the flush() call the AIR app was responsive and seemed to work properly.  Thus proving that it was indeed stuck (or blocked) on the flush() call for 15 hours trying to drain the data to a socket with zero tcp window condition.
    A tcp zero window condition on 1 socket hanging an entire app sounds concerning.
    Solution Suggestions:
    (1) What is needed is for the OutputProgress event to include a field for 'bytes that can be written safely without blocking on the socket', i.e. 'space available in underlying platform socket buffer' which would account for the socket send buffer size.
    (2) An alternative solution would be for AIR to provide a write-timeout setsockopt (or a writeTimeout() method on the socket), and return flush with an error (or EWOULDBLOCK), and call the OUTPUTPROG event only when there is enough space available.
    If there are any other workarounds, please let me know.
    Thank you.

    Question:  Does Adobe AIR expose the getsockopt() and setsockopt() calls on a socket?  It would be useful to apps to tune the io buffer sizes.
    Additional Details:
    RTT = 100+ milliseconds
    TCP Window Scaling enabled
    Secure Socket
    Hard to reproduce with plain TCP socket, but occurs without fail with SecureSocket.  Not knowing the underlying code base, am wondering if it is because the SSL encryption overhead (bytes) throws off the buffer available size compution in secure_sock.flush() .
    Thanks.

    There is a second error with similar wording.
    If I say ok to the warnings I can make changes but they do not save.
    I can access the Server Admin on the XServe
    Anyone know of a solution so that I can login and edit the settings for my XServe from a remote computer?

    I'm getting this too, server is XServe running 10.6.6, remote Server Admin is on a 10.5.8 PPC iMac. No errors with same remote against a PowerMac server running 10.5.8. No errors with 10.6.6 remote against either server.
    Unlike the OP, however, the changes I've tried "take." The pop-ups are annoying though.

  • TCP Client Program hangs up! Please help

    Hi,
    I'm trying to send a sudio file from server to client. Before starting to send the file I take the system time at the server and send it to client. For this I use the following code.
    At Client:
    DataInputStream inFromServer2 = new DataInputStream(clientSocket.getInputStream());
    long begin_time = inFromServer2.readLong();
    System.out.println("FROM SERVER: "+begin_time);
    At Server:
    begin_time = System.currentTimeMillis();
    System.out.println("begin_time="+begin_time);
    outToClient.writeLong(begin_time);
    It takes the system time correctly at the server but when it sends to client it gives me some negative number. Sometimes the client just hangs up after coming to this statement.
    Can anyone please figure out what am I doing wrong
    Thanks a lot.

    Perhaps the output never gets packaged into a packet and sent to the client, try adding the line:
    outToClient.flush();To your Server source.

  • Current license only allows 10 simultaneous client logins when there are only 9 computers logging in?

    I continue to receieve an error message when using Final Cut Server "Sorry, the current license only allows 10 simultaneous client logins" and there are only 9 machines connected to this server, 8 iMac's and 1 Mac Pro. They are all running 10.6.8 are Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Ram, FCS 1.1.1 (1C36, 1.3.36). The server is 10.5.8 Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5, 7GB Ram.
    The temporary solution was to have some clients log out of Final Cut Server but this should not be necessary if we only have 9 computers logged in. Any help from anyone on this problem would be much appreciated. I have scoured the forums and have not had any luck.

    Do you have the Microsoft UAM module installed? That was causing a similar problem for us with 10.3.9.

  • Client logins

    How could I implement client logins to a RMI application in Java? What should I use?
    I (will) have a RMI application and i want dude A when he loggs in to be able to call only some methods on the stubs. However, I want dude B to be able to access all the methods. How could I possibly do that?
    Thank you.
    Adi.

    Yes it does. Thank you very much. So here is my complete idea:
    Every module will have a XML descriptor. Within that descriptor, every component of the module will have to have a descriptor with every remote method and every group that can execute it. This will be stored in a HashTable on the server. The primary key is the Class + "." + methodName and the value is an array of strings with the name of the groups that can execute it. Every "secure" remote method will check the module for the right permissions:
    The username/password combination will generate a unique key (J2EE JSESSIONID cookie springs to mind) that will be passed to the client and stored in a hashtable on the server. The HashTable will have as primary key the string (or Long) and as values the group under which the user is situated. The checkCredentials functions will get the group for a uniqueID, then it will check the credentials of that group.
    For let's say 30 users I don't think (read "hope") this won't be too much of a slow down.
    =======
    A more efficient way would be to create three interfaces (as posted here) RemoteRead, RemoteWrite (extends RemoteRead) and maybe RemoteCreate (extends RemoteWrite) to be passed to the client. This would eliminate the need to check the credentials for every remote procedure call but I'm still left to wonder whether the client would be able to create a Write interface for something that he doesn't have write access (anymore)? Let's assume he creates such an interface: it would need to have a corespondant on the server, right? I mean object A has full acces to the database. User U has only Read acces and the object gives him the read interface.
    1) Is it possible for him to programatically create a Write interface?
    2) Suppose he can can he somehow link it with the remote object and obtain Write privileges?

  • Mountain Lion Server Workgroup Login Selections

    Hi All,
        I am installing a Mountain Lion Mac Mini server which is replacing our Snow Leopard Mac Mini server.
    The system is bound to 2008R2 ADS. When I log into the Snow Leopard Server from a client I am presented with which group I would like to log in to as in ADS I am a member of two groups. ie admins and staff. This is how we have set it up so all is good there.
    The issue that I am having is that the groups are not being being presented on the client when logging into Mountain Lion Server although the configuration on the two servers is the same.
    Has anybody experienced this problem before? Maybe this is now default behaviour with Mountain Lion server? The problem is its automatically logging us in with the most restrictive group so we have no admin rights on the clients.
    Thanks in advance for any info!!

    I had this problem on a clean install.
    The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
    That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.
    Talk about KISS
