10g on VMware

Hi I want to install my 10g infrastructure on VMware instance and 10g Mid on a standalone system 4 security can amy one help me in this
I really appericate you help
chaitu

Hi Sam
Use NAT. Then in XP view the Network connections and right click on the Local Area connection->Status->Support and it will tell you the IP address. This address remains the same every time you start and use this IP address from OS X to get to the database (tnsnames, SQLDeveloper, JDeveloper or whatever you are using).
Then from Local Area Connection->Status->General->Properties->Advanced->Settings (in Windows firewall section)-->Exceptions make sure all the Oracle related boxes including TNSLSNR are checked.
It was this last step that started it all working for me.

  • Oracle RAC 10g on VMware

I am installing Oracle RAC on 2 virtual machines using RHEL 3-U7, basically I have been able to install RAC and the software for the database. However when I run dbca to configure ASM, I get
Error When starting ASM instance on node node1
PRKS-1009: Failed to start ASM instance +ASM2 on node1
    last line repeats
CRS-1028: Dependency analysis failed because of:
CRS-0223: Resource ora.node1.ASM2.asm has placement errors.
I ran ifconfig and appears to be a VIP on both servers. Is there a reason/solution or a workaround for this issue ?. Thank you in advance for your help

    Hello testing33,

I am using cook book instructions provided on the web site.
I am having rpoblem on stage 4, while installing Oracle 10g CRS CD at the very end.
What instructions did you use to install Oracle 10g?

  • Oracle 10g on VMWare

I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer regarding Oracle 10g on VMWare. On one page, Oracle states that "Oracle will not support production deployments of Oracle software on VMware" (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/vmware/cookbook/index.html). However, the Metalink article it references states "Oracle will provide support of the Oracle Stack on VMware. If a problem is investigated where Oracle software gives a problem specifically when running on a VMware virtual machine, and it can be reproduced on a physical PC, a bug will be submitted to development for resolution. Any issues which are VMware
specific will be referred back to VMware for support."
Now I'm stuck in a difficult position: I have a production database installed on a VMware device that is seriously sucking wind (mostly related to disk I/O and swap, either the VMware device or the ESX server it's running on) and I have contradictory information from Oracle. Does anyone have any insight into a formal position from Oracle?
Without a definitive answer, I need to figure out a way to tune what I have to squeeze every last drop of performance from the VMware device. I am running Oracle 10gR2 in 9.2.0.6 compatibility mode. I am running RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 ES, update 7. The VMware device has 2 CPUs and 2 GB of RAM (the most this version of ESX can provide is ~3.5 GB but I start running into issues because the ESX server is oversubscribed at that amount of RAM). The database is doing mostly OLTP and is approximately 150 GB in size.
Any assistance / guidance is greatly appreciated.

    I
start running into issues because the ESX server is
oversubscribed at that amount of RAM). The database
is doing mostly OLTP and is approximately 150 GB in
size.Do you think being oversubscribed on the memory might be a factor to why you are seeing high I/O and swapping?
What they stating is that Oracle will support the product in VMWare providing the problem can be reproduced on a physical machine. Oracle is not alone in this regard, many other companies are taking the same position.

  • RAC 10g Linux VMWare on windows 2000

I have installed RAC 10g for Linux VMWare on Windows 2000 and have an issue with the Enterprise Manager console. Does anyone now how to improve the display of Mozilla Browser. The appearance is quite blurred and some buttons and text are barely visible. I though about changing the desktop resolution but this made things worse.

I have found a workround, which is to use another workstation I have on my network to launch the Enterprise Manager console. However, I would still like to know if anyone has a proper solution.

  • Problem of using OCFS2 as shared storage to install RAC 10g on VMware

    Hi, all
I am installing a RAC 10g cluster with two linux nodes on VMware. I created a shared 5G disk for the two nodes as shared storage partition. By using OCFS2 tools, i formatted this shared storage partition and successfully auto mounted it on both nodes.
Before installing, i use the command "runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n node1,node2" to determine the installation prerequisites. Everything is ok except an error "Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.". By searching the web, i found this error could be safely ignored.
The OCFS2 works well on both nodes, i formatted the shared partition as ocfs2 file system and configure o2bc to auto start ocfs service. I mounted the shared disk on both nodes at /ocfs directory. By adding an entry into both nodes' /etc/fstab, this partition can be auto mounted at system boots. I could access files in shared partition on both nodes.
My problem is that, when installing clusterware, at the stage "Specify Oracle Cluster Registry", I enter "/ocfs/OCRFILE" for Specify OCR Location and "/ocfs/OCRFILE_Mirror" for Specify OCR Mirror Location. But got an error as following:
    ----- Error Message ----
The location /ocfs/OCRFILE, entered for the Oracle Cluster Registry(OCR) is not shared across all the nodes in the cluster. Specify a shared raw partition or cluster file system that is visible by the same name on all nodes of the cluster.
    ------ Error Message ---
I don't know why the OUI can't recognize /ocfs as shared partition. On both nodes, using command "mounted.ocfs2 -f", i can get the result:
    Device FS Nodes
    /dev/sdb1 ocfs2 node1, node2
What's the possible wrong? Any help is appreciated!
    Addition information:

    Hello
I am not sure how far this following solution is relevant to your problem (regardless when it was originally posted - may help someone who is reading this thread), here is what I faced and here is how I fixed it:
I was setting up RAC using VMWare. I prepared rac1 [installed OS, configured disks, users, etc] and the made a copy of it as rac2. So far so good. When, as per the guide I was following for RAC configuration, I started OCFS2 configuration, faced the following error on RAC2 when I tried to mount the /dev/adb1:
    ===================================================
    [Root @ *rac2* ~] # mount - t ocfs2 - o datavolume, nointr / dev / sdb1 / ocfs
ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid ocfs2_hb_ctl: OCFS2 DIRECTORY corrupted WHILE reading uuid
mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted" mount.ocfs2: Error WHEN attempting TO run / sbin / ocfs2_hb_ctl: "Operation not permitted"
    ===================================================
After a lot of "googling around", I finally bumped into a page, the kind person who posted the solution said [in my words below and more detailed ]:
    o shutdown both rac1 and rac2
o in VMWare, "edit virtual machine settings" for rac1
o remove the disk [make sure you drop the correct one]
o recreate it and select *"allocate all disk space now"* [with same name and in the same directory where it was before]
o start rac1 and login as *"root"* and *"fdisk /dev/sdb"* [or whichever is/was your disk where you r installing ocfs2]
Once done, repeat the steps for configuring OCFS2. I was successfully able to mount the disk on both machines.
All this problem was apparently caused by not choosing "allocate all disk space now" option while creating the disk to be used for OCFS2.
If you still have any questions or problem, email me at [email protected] and I'll try to get back to you at my earliest.
    Good luck!

  • Oracle 10g RAC VMware support

Is Oracle 10g RAC supported in a production VMware environment yet? If not, what is the hold up? VMware is the standard in the industry now and not being able to virtulize is both costly and not practical.

As the previous responder points out, whilst Oracle does not actively certify its products in VMWare environments, it will provide support provided the issue is already known on the guest OS, or it can be reproduced outside a VMWare environment.
I know of many organisations running VMWare with RAC, including my own although we tend NOT to use it in Production environments. Oracle has many resource management capabilities built in to the RDBMS and the Grid Infrastructure which only work well if Oracle has control of all of the resources on a server.
I guess if you're not satisfied with our responses, you should direct your question to Oracle Support rather than this forum. Certification of VMWare is probably as much (or may be mostly) a business decision by Oracle and us Forum members can't generally explain those decisions.

    Please help me.
    Thanks a lot !!!

i wanna know if you have a link or document about

installed my vmware and then i installed my Centos OSOracle 10g is not certified with Centos OS , so you will not find document specific to Centos OS on oracle documentation site. Since it is similar to Red Hat OS , so you can consider to check/use Installation Guide for RedHat AS/ES 4.

  • Oracle 10g + VMware Workstation 6.5 = data block corruption?

I'm trying to run Oracle 10g on VMWare Workstation 6.5 (host and guest are windows 2003)
I've noticed a couple times that I easily get block corruptions and wonder if there are some settings to lower the risk.
Note this is a DEV machine, not a production machine.
I don't know if Oracle supports the set up but I'm sure many people are running Oracle in Vmware so I'm looking to those who have done so successfully.
Anyone know of special precautions in either Vmware or Oracle config to limit the risk on block corruption?
According to VMWare, ESX is a perfect platorm so maybe I should move from Workstation to ESX, maybe it has to do with Windows in VM and Linux would work better.
Anyone has some info on why Oracle has block corruption on VMware Workstation (windows/windows)?
Other people with positive/negative experience on VMWare Workstation (mention OS's and Oracle version please)
(before someone tells me it's not supported, also see these pages on vmware.com:

Well, it's indeed not for production, I use it for product demos and small development tasks, there is no critical data in my database but I wished I could run Oracle inside a VM on my laptop...
It works reasonably well (I even have run multiple VM's (Workstation) with Oracle insde on 1 laptop (4 GB Ram, Core Duo), but sooner or later it gives some problems. If there is any setting that can lower the risk would be great.
I was thinking of installing ORacle VM but apparently my laptop is not compatible with that (nor with ESX for that matter).
Anyone use plain Xen (which seems to support any processor) + Oracle on Linux ??
I can't install Oracle natively on the machine directly since I need the capabilities of a VM in respect of easy backup + I have many different applications and databases so depending on what I need to show, I just start a different VM
The VM provides the capabilities to move back to previous situation, exchaning demos with collegues, have multiple parallel copies with different configurations (depending on customer), etc...
... installing natively is too much of hassle, we used to swap hard disks but that's a pain when the hardware changes, at least with VMWare WS you can run it on pretty much any computer.
How do other people deal with this type of situation?? We have ESX on a hosted environment but internet access is not always available...
It seems stable enough to run my demos (I'm doing this for quite a while but the block corruption seems to happen sooner or later)
The problem is that I first need to get the demo installed without corruptions. Once it's installed I can just restart from that situation over and over again, but obviously I don't want to run the risk of having a disk corruption in the middle of a demo.

  • [Solaris] rebooting in installing Oracle 10g R2 after Clusterware install

    Hi..
Currently I am practicing the configuration of Oracle 10g R2 RAC (Solaris x86-64) with a Clusterware 10g on VMware
With the installation of Oracle Clusterware 10g software, there's no problem and look like working well on both nodes.
But, whenever I try installing the Oracle 10g R2 with 'install the software only' option, I got unstoppable rebooting
problem on the first node, rac1.
I tried both installation mode: OUI-typed and Silent approaches. Nothing worked!!
I wanted to figure out why this problem happened, but so far I did not have any bright answer for this. I looked in
the log and error files from /u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs, but there's no good answer or hint to resolve the
    problem I have now.
Until now I tried 4 times of installations, but all stopped and were automatically rebooted at the same point with
almost 3% copying of software. I found some of trainers are having same problem I have now.

This happens whenever I install the Oracle 10g R2 software.
Is there any unknown or hidden problem regarding CRS or something else?
Anybody has some hints or solution to this problem? If so, please let me have it ASAP.
    Thank you so much.

I have gone through similar problem when installing oracle 10g in linux. You should follow the oracle installation documentation and make sure that all required OS patches and packages must be installed before starting the oracle installation. In my installation few OS packages was missing in the oracle documentation too and searching over the net solved the problem. I have installed few extra OS packages (RPM) and installed oracle successfully.

  • Install RAC  using vmware

    Hi,
I am trying to install RAC 10g using vmware . I have windows vista 64bit as host OS. Now the problem i am facing during installation of vmware . if i try to install vmware server it's not being installed on vista as its not been supported by vista 64bit OS. if i try to install vmware workstation 6.5 it install fine but again it doesn't support clustering hence can't proceed with installation. Does some has installed RAC on same kind of configuration . Please share with me. Would be a great help.

You MUST NOT use VMware Server to try install RAC!
You CAN DO it with VMware Workstation 6.5!
When use VMware Workstation 6.5 you get the message:
Clustering is not support for VMWare Workstation
    This can ignored!

  • Lsnrctl service orcl does not load

Installed 10g on vmware virtual machine running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition R2
    everything works initially
    When working...
    lsnrctl services yields:
    Service "PLSExtProc" has 1 instance(s).....
    Service "orcl" has 1 instance(s)....
    Service "orclXDB" has 1 instance(s)....
    Service "orcl_XPT" has 1 instance(s)....
all are dedicated and everything works fine...
Then out of the blue, I'll power down the machine and unexpectedly the orcl db will stop working....
    When not working....
    LSNRCTL> services
    Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=EXTPROC1)))
    Services Summary...
    Service "PLSExtProc" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "PLSExtProc", status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
    Handler(s):
    "DEDICATED" established:0 refused:0
    LOCAL SERVER
    The command completed successfully
I can tnsping orcl successfully but the listener doesn't load it for whatever reason.
Why doesn't orcl or the other services load????
    Nothing has changed....
Any suggestions or advice for how to further troubleshoot?

---I realize that Oracle doesn't support VMware on db's, however VMWare publisizes that Oracle can run on a virtual machine so I don't think what I'm doing is out of the ordinary.
I tried stopping the listener and stopping the database, then starting the listener and then the database and the same problem continues. The only way I've found to fix it is to restore the virtual machine to an earlier snapshot, but after while the same problem occurs all over again.
