  • RMA'ing GPU due to leaking fans

I have two R9 280X Gaming cards that are suffering from leaking fans and noisy bearings. As far as I know (see quote below from MSI employee) this is a well known issue and the solution seems to be to RMA them to MSI for replacement.
However that's proving to be easier said than done. The UK version of the MSI RMA page is contradictory as to what you can or cannot RMA direct to MSI and when attempting to register the cards the text of the page is in English (as you'd expect) but the buttons are in what appears to be Chinese (not very useful). (screenshot available if you think I'm making it up)
    Quote
    What is the issue?
Some cards manufactured pre-January are experiencing oil leakage from the fans.
    How is this caused?
Oil leaks from the fans hub when the fans are spinning at 100% over a long period of time under high heat conditions.
    Why is this happening?
We have seen a huge spike in sales numbers since late November when the BitCoin-Cryptocurrency mining craze started to kick off. Thus, customers have been using our R9 Series of GAMING Graphics Cards since mid-December to mine coins over a 24-HR, 7 days a week period which these cards are not designed for.
    The details...
Basically our cards are designed mainly for one thing.. gaming (the clue's in the name). They are not intended for use under "industrial" load conditions where they would be needed to run flat-out continuously day after day, week after week with potential high heat levels.
MSI HQ have been working on the fix since late December to make some changes to our Twin Frozr coolers to stop this from happening. At the centre of the fan there is a 3mm gap inside where a specially made gel is inserted to keep our fans running smoothly and quietly to give you the award-winning silent conditions during idle and gaming modes you have seen and/or heard about. MSI has since reduced this to 2mm. This doesn't sound much but has in fact solved one of the issues whereby there was extra space for air to squeeze inside the area alongside the gel to cause tiny air bubbles that (while at 100% fan load for a long period of time) forces the gel to leak out onto the fan shroud and surrounding area.
The final issue that was fixed was simply not to put as much gel inside the fans core. We intentionally put more gel into this area during production to ensure your cards would continue to run smoothly and that durability would never decrease. Sadly our good intentions came back to hurt us since many customers are using R9 Graphics Cards (and R7) to mine for coins jumping quickly onto the Cryptocurrency bandwagon. Our cards we're not designed for this. Under normal gaming conditions this would not happen (rare cases it may). MSI HQ wanted (yet again) to improve our award-winning Twin Frozr coolers further by solving any and all reliability questions of the running of our fans... hence more gel.
Unlike our competitors, our bearing is made from a special ring made from a mixture of pressed cooper shavings and oil – This unique design avoids the need of ball bearings so the fan can run quieter.
Those customers with Graphics Cards pre-January that are worrying about oil leaking in the future causing harm to the fans.. don't worry. The oil leaking is from the fans hub and not from the bearing, thus will not impact the lifetime running of the fans.
    Is it safe?
Yes. The gel which has since turned into an oil like substance during high heat conditions will not harm you, nor your surrounding components in your PC. This gel is harmless, it is non-conductive and will not harm components on the motherboard – The gel is designed to work up to 140C so it will not burn out.
    What do I do now?
As mentioned, HQ knows about the problems you have been experiencing and recommends you RMA your Graphics Card to our RMA centre for a replacement card with the new fixes.
Can you not just send some replacement fans or coolers?
No. While there are 0 issues with the PCB's, we cannot send you replacement fans and/or Twin Frozr coolers to do it yourself. One reason is we want to ensure you do not damage the PCB or cooler during installation (and thus voiding your warranty), but another reason is due to how we design the Twin Frozr coolers. You may not know this, but unlike many of our competitors who simply use the same cooler for every batch of cards, we engineer our coolers differently per each graphics card to ensure each cooler we place onto each GPU can handle the thermals produced from that very GPU since every GPU is different (silicone lottery).
We are very sorry if you have been affected by this issue. We hold our hands up, however we did have good intentions. Please RMA the Graphics Card back to us for a swift replacement.
Can anyone tell me how to send my cards back to MSI for replacements without learning Chinese and/or jumping through hoops? TIA.

you can't send the card directly to MSI for Europe, but via reseller/place of purchase.
if you need more infornation you can ask MSI here about it:

    or to ask your reseller.
we can't help more than this

It categorically states that customers experiencing issues with leaking fans should send the cards back to MSI directly.
That's all I'm trying to do.
If you are in Europe, you can't do this

  • Acrobat XI needs plugin installation for Portfolio/RMA

    Hi all,
Today I’ve noticed that new version of Reader: XI, no longer includes Falsh Player embedded, and needs to get it installed separately to read a portfolio or a RMA.
This means the PDF container + Acrobat are not anymore an “installation free” alternative, by “installation free” I mean that almost all computers have Reader installed in it, but asking for a plug-in installation is a problem:in company computers, internet kiosk, etc… where users have no admin rights…
    Why this change?
Is this the future strategy? Or something that will change?
    Regards,
    GLoureiro

Dennis is stating the current situation. Nobody will reveal future plans for support (or lack thereof) in future versions on these public forums, but given there are a small number of third-party apps which have 'proof of concept' support for 3D and video, I wouldn't be surprised if that led to more interesting things in future.
SWF and scripting on iOS is another matter entirely, but the raw media within an RMA is just a file stream - if your device can play H.264 video in a browser app, there's nothing technical to stop it happening in Reader. Would it make the app too large for consumers to accept? Possibly. Could plugins be downloaded on demand? Maybe.
Equally, if you create a PDF Portfolio without an embedded navigator (it's possible with development tools) then Acrobat/Reader on the desktop will apply a default  layout. The mobile version could in theory do the same thing and display the 'cards' using an internal UI design which isn't running in Flash - it wouldn't reflect the original NAV but could be thought of as a 'mobile optimized view' and would be allowable on iOS. Not saying it'll happen, not saying it won't.

Why is it so difficult to convert a Raw image to a jpeg in Photoshop Elements ?! I have version 12. Once i realized to change the tick box in Camera Raw to 8 bit instead of 16 bit and Flatten image ( sometimes can flatten image if the flatten option isn't greyed out) hey presto i thought i was up and running. However after saving the photograph as a jpeg and renaming it e, after the word edit. I switched off/on my computer only for all the images i had spent time working on to have disappeared. Feeling very upset as there is no Technical Help to telephone at adobe and i don't know what to do.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • WAP4410N RMA process

Picking up 2 new units from TigerDirect.com today... I'll let you all know if they are v1 or v2 when they get here.
I called Cisco @ 1-800-553-2447 about the other 5 we have to get them RMA'd and told them I'd like to do an advanced exchange so we aren't without Wifi totally for a week due to this hardware issue. I'm and end user (bought them through 3rd party vendors) and don't have a Cisco support contract.
After 11 minutes to answer the call, I explained the issue for 3 minutes and was put on hold for another 4 minutes and she came back to ask me for our Cisco ID.  I told her my ID and she asked for a serial #... I gave that, she checked it was under warranty still and then set up a call back from an engineer.  She verified my phone number, asked if I wanted an email confirmation of the request, and had me give a brief description again of the issue for her to note for the engineer. On hold again at 26 minutes into the call, she filled out the rest of the support request... and then at 31 minutes into the call came back and said she had to transfer me to a different department since it is a small business product...
"Please wait" played repeatedly for the next 2 minutes and then she introduced me to an Engineer.
He looked up the serial number and asked if I could forward a receipt to him to prove purchase date.  I couldn't easily do so... I explained it was a known issue and directed him here.  He set up a case# for me and arranged an RMA advanced exchange of the 5 units of a $75 fee.  I'm fine with paying the $75 to not be without wifi for days while waiting on replacement units.  I was transferred to an automated prompt that took my credit card info... which failed to work.  Tried again... failed to work again.  The card is good... not sure what's up there.  I told him I had to go due to a guy waiting on me in the office at this point.  He finished the RMA setup and is supposed to let me know when it's done.  He said he'd figure out the payment thing and let me know. :-P
    Friendly folks, but man...
Total call time = 55 minutes.
For the record, those of you looking to get your units replaced, you need to call:
    1-866-606-1866
That would have saved me 30 minutes.

The original RMA of my first 5 units came in Monday and I installed them all after updating firmware from 2.0.0.5 they came with to 2.0.1.0... and so far so good. It took a little more work to change the IP's on the newer firmware than it did on the older Linksys firmware too.  Not sure why, but it wouldn't stick unless I was on a hub with the wireless point directly.  If I changed the IP over our network and then flipped to that IP on my machine, it just timed out.  Eventually getting into the web interface would show it didn't take the static IP I gave and instead used a random number in the last octet.  VERY strange.  This was repeatable on all 5 units.  Putting the AP and my computer on a hub by themselves and assigning static 192.168.1.5 to my computer and connecting to the default 192.168.1.245 of the point... I could change it to 192.168.20.xx and then change my machine to the 192.168.20.5 and connect to it fine.  VERY odd that this wouldn't take unless I was on the hub that way. May have been a local DNS issue or something, not sure.  Once we were in the x.x.20.x range, I put both of us on the network and all was well.
The TigerDirect units came in today and they are both V01 units (despite the updated Cisco branded packaging vs the Linksys packaging on the original WAP4410N's I bought).  I called Cisco and they said they imagine TigerDirect and NewEgg have a lot of older stock still.  The SER.... serial numbers are the newer ones so the tech was surprised to hear it started with that, but apparently it wasn't new enough as it was still V01.
I set up a new RMA for the 2 new units from TigerDirect (again had to point the tech to Dave Hornstein's comments here for him to agree to RMA them).  Bummer that you can't tell what hardware version it is unless you open up the box (remove shrink wrap) and look at the sticker on the back of the unit itself.  If you could tell by looking at the box, I'd have confirmed with the vendor before ordering.  I suggested to the tech that they print the V# on the serial number sticker on the box...
I'm glad the V02 units resolve this issue... I'm bummed it's such a hassle to get them still. :-P
Total call time waiting on the RMA setup = 30 minutes.

  • ASA code version upgrade error

I just recently tried to upgrade the code version of a 5510 from 8.3(2) to 9.1 and got this error:
This is an ASA image and cannot be loaded on a PIX platform.
I was consoled into the firewall and watching it boot up, after that error it just said "rebooting..." and nothing ever happened. Can someone please shed some light on this as I have no idea why that error popped up and can't find any documentation about it. I tested the upgrade on a seperate 5510 to make sure it would work beforehand and didn't have any issues. Thanks in advance!

The problem is that the flash storage is corrupt. I have also received this error in the past. Power cycling did absolutely nothing to help, and I was not able to get far enough to boot from ROMMON to boot to another image. It was resolved simply by processing an RMA with Cisco Systems. Out of many hundreds of Cisco devices that I have installed, I have only experienced this happening one time. It seems (based on research) more common with the ASA for some reason. I have absolutely never had this happen with an ISR, or Catalyst switch. Of course, these are all rather different devices. This problem could just be specific to the ASA itself. I had it happen with a 5505. OP had this occur on a 5510. Perhaps this should be looked in to by the ASA dev. team if it has not already been addressed.

  • Academic Version of Aperture 2: "Don't"

For those who are contemplating getting the academic version of Aperture 2, my advice is "Don't."
I just received my copy a little while ago. I paid $179 plus shipping to the Apple Store for Education. Inside the plastic wrap, on the box is a label that says: "Academic Not eligible for upgrades". So, you can save $20 now and buy Aperture 3 at full price later, or pay full price now and an upgrade price later.
I called and got an RMA number. A return address label and "Packaging slip" can be printed out at my order listing on my Order page on the Apple web site. It's going back today.
    Regards,
    Don O'Shea

You're right. To buy the academic version if it's only $20 cheaper makes no sense. When I bought the academic version in December, it was 1/2 the price of the regular version ... $149 vs $300. This actually saved me money in the long run because if I would have bought the regular version at $300 and the upgraded to v2, it would have cost a total of $399. By doing it the way I did, it only cost me a total of $349, saving me $50.

  • Reader doesn't play zero size (width x height) RMA, e. g. sound, anymore

    Hi,
Just to make sure I didn't miss something. It seems that newer versions of Adobe Reader with separate FlashPlayer plugin deny playing zero size (i. e. not consuming document page space) RMAs anymore. In case of short auto-played sound RMAs, the user interface is not really necessary. So I used to embed such RMAs with zero dimensions into the document page. But recently they stopped playing, unless a small extension (in terms of page space) was given to them. Has this behaviour been introduced on purpose (perhaps for security reasons)?
    Alex

Everything on a page has to have some presence. It was just lucky that what you've been doing up to now worked. Now it doesn't, and the reasons for code changes are not discussed with the general public. If you feel this change should be reversed, file a feature request at http://www.adobe.com/go/wish
I can't see any justification for a zero-size SWF - even if the sound is controlled by scripting you (and a reader) must have access to a page region to open the context menus. If you don't want any visible playhead, the correct workflow is to create a completely-transparent audio player in Flash that works as a play/stop button, so Flash Player has somewhere to hang its context menu.

  • Running an RMA in 9.5.1

I am trying to create a PDF in an Enterprise scenario with the following criteria:
all users are non-admin's and unable to install new applications.
70% of the desktops only have IE, and therefore the only flash plugin available is the Active X plugin.
~30% of the desktops also have firefox, and there the NPAPI flash plugin.
desktops are running Reader 9.5.1 (with decoupled flash), and 10.1.3 (with authplay still packaged).
I need to distribute a PDF with embedded flash media that will run on all these machines. This document CANNOT prompt the users to install a flash plugin, or other multimedia plugin, or the business sponsors will not allow the document to be distributed. My problem is for the group of users who are running only IE and have Reader 9.5.1 installed. These users will not be able to run an RMA, so I will need to launch the media as a Legacy Media object.
The solution I am pursuing is to check if an RMA can run, and if so launch that. If the RMA will not run, then I would want to launch the legacy media object. I would preferably like to check if the legacy media will run successfully as well and give users a friendly message letting them know they are missing the media content.
Unfortunately all my attempts to this point to check for the existence of the RMA in 9.5.1 result in the user being prompted to download flash, and any checks for the legacy media object result in the user recieving a security prompt to trust the document. My questions are as follows:
is there any way to check if an RMA will run in 9.5.1 without prompting the user to download flash?
is there any way to check if a legacy media object will run in 9.5.1 without giving the user a security prompt?
is there any way that I can avoid packaging the swf content into the document separately for both RMA and Legacy to reduce document size??
Any answers or other ideas on potential approaches would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for clarifying Dave, ...
No clarification at all. Please excuse my nit-pickyness, but in contrast to Dave's statement both AdobeReader 9 (9.5.0) and X use built-in FlashPlayers, not the ones used in the Web browser to be downloaded separately. Thus, you will not be prompted for downloading the player when opening a RMA in AdobeReader. They will work in Win and OSX versions of the Reader but not in the Linux version. For the latter (9.5.1), downloading the web bowser plugin will not help as Flash isn't supported any more.
Just to prove it I downloaded https://www.adobe.com/swf/software/flash/about/flashAbout_info_small.swf
If embedded as a RMA into PDF and opened in the most recent Reader 9 downloadable for Windows (9.5.0), it displays:
    Version Information
    You have version
    10,3,183,18 installed
and when opened directly in Firefox I get
    Version Information
    You have version
    11,1,102,63 installed
That is, two different FlashPlayer (major-) versions.

NOT!!!!

  • Should i RMA my K8T-Neo Fis2R?

I am getting some weird cpu temps in the bios 67c!! and according to mbm5 its only 48c.. worth rmaing? is ther a problem with the sensor on the motherboard?.

    ...Moan Guide...
...the first time you enter BIOS after clearing the CMOS the CPU temp always reads high (mine reads 65C)...I'd be more concerned with the 48C that MBM5 reports and that is a HSF issue...

  • WLC 5508 HA RMA Process

    Hi all,
I am currently in a situation where our primary 5508 failed, our secondary 5508 took over, and we RMA'd the primary. Now that I have received the primary RMA device, I am stuck with what to do with it. I know that I need to transfer the licensing and have found documentation on that but what does the rest of the process look like? Do I just plug it back in using the redundancy port and away we go? I assume there are additional steps but I am having trouble finding documentation on it. Please help! Thanks in advance,
    Derek

Thanks Scott. After a few mishaps I figured that this basic config involves:
    - Recover-config and reboot
    - Enter the correct management address, subnet, VLAN tag, LAG parameters as the former primary unit and the rest can be garbage? -> reboot
    - Login and enter:
          config interface address redundancy-management IP1 peer-redundancy-management IP2
     config redundancy unit primary
config redundancy mode sso         (doesn't seem to be sso AP option in this version - 7.6.130)
    - Reboot and either power off or wait for boot then power off
    - Connect up heartbeat and management cables and power on
    - Wait for sync...
however I experienced an issue where it got to "Found the Peer. Starting Role Determination..." and then would get no further after waiting 15minutes.
Should this be a fairly quick step? I then rolled back and put my old primary in the same way and ended up waiting about 30mins and finally it worked. I realised after the fact that when I put the new primary in I hadn't set the LAG correctly and I also did not give it the exact same management address so that might have caused trouble earlier, but I can't explain why the old primary took so long either.

  • How to Set up RMA WAAS DEVICE to replace faulty One

We just got RMA Cisco WAAS Devices (WAE 512) from Cisco. We decided to test the devices before taking it to client sites. The 2 devices could not boot, it display following error message "I9990301 Hard disk drive boot sector error". We transfer hard drive from a working WAE 512 and installed it on the RMA WAE (we received from Cisco). We got the same error message. Could you help with procedure in get Cisco WAE received as RMA to work. Because the RMA Device did not come with hard drive. Find attached screen capture.

    Hi James,
This can happen when the wrong software is installed on the flash or if the flash cookie is wrong.
Could you download the WAAS recovery CD of the version you want to run, boot from it then boot from it and then follow this procedure: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v431/configuration/guide/maint.html#wp1173532 (Search for Step 1 in the document).
If you are unable to boot from the CD or if it still fails afterwards, there might be another hardware issue with the new device you got.
    Regards,
    Nicolas
