RMA'ing GPU due to leaking fans

I have two R9 280X Gaming cards that are suffering from leaking fans and noisy bearings. As far as I know (see quote below from MSI employee) this is a well known issue and the solution seems to be to RMA them to MSI for replacement.
However that's proving to be easier said than done. The UK version of the MSI RMA page is contradictory as to what you can or cannot RMA direct to MSI and when attempting to register the cards the text of the page is in English (as you'd expect) but the buttons are in what appears to be Chinese (not very useful). (screenshot available if you think I'm making it up)

What is the issue?
Some cards manufactured pre-January are experiencing oil leakage from the fans.
How is this caused?
Oil leaks from the fans hub when the fans are spinning at 100% over a long period of time under high heat conditions.
Why is this happening?
We have seen a huge spike in sales numbers since late November when the BitCoin-Cryptocurrency mining craze started to kick off. Thus, customers have been using our R9 Series of GAMING Graphics Cards since mid-December to mine coins over a 24-HR, 7 days a week period which these cards are not designed for.
The details...
Basically our cards are designed mainly for one thing.. gaming (the clue's in the name). They are not intended for use under "industrial" load conditions where they would be needed to run flat-out continuously day after day, week after week with potential high heat levels.
MSI HQ have been working on the fix since late December to make some changes to our Twin Frozr coolers to stop this from happening. At the centre of the fan there is a 3mm gap inside where a specially made gel is inserted to keep our fans running smoothly and quietly to give you the award-winning silent conditions during idle and gaming modes you have seen and/or heard about. MSI has since reduced this to 2mm. This doesn't sound much but has in fact solved one of the issues whereby there was extra space for air to squeeze inside the area alongside the gel to cause tiny air bubbles that (while at 100% fan load for a long period of time) forces the gel to leak out onto the fan shroud and surrounding area.
The final issue that was fixed was simply not to put as much gel inside the fans core. We intentionally put more gel into this area during production to ensure your cards would continue to run smoothly and that durability would never decrease. Sadly our good intentions came back to hurt us since many customers are using R9 Graphics Cards (and R7) to mine for coins jumping quickly onto the Cryptocurrency bandwagon. Our cards we're not designed for this. Under normal gaming conditions this would not happen (rare cases it may). MSI HQ wanted (yet again) to improve our award-winning Twin Frozr coolers further by solving any and all reliability questions of the running of our fans... hence more gel.
Unlike our competitors, our bearing is made from a special ring made from a mixture of pressed cooper shavings and oil – This unique design avoids the need of ball bearings so the fan can run quieter.
Those customers with Graphics Cards pre-January that are worrying about oil leaking in the future causing harm to the fans.. don't worry. The oil leaking is from the fans hub and not from the bearing, thus will not impact the lifetime running of the fans.
Is it safe?
Yes. The gel which has since turned into an oil like substance during high heat conditions will not harm you, nor your surrounding components in your PC. This gel is harmless, it is non-conductive and will not harm components on the motherboard – The gel is designed to work up to 140C so it will not burn out.
What do I do now?
As mentioned, HQ knows about the problems you have been experiencing and recommends you RMA your Graphics Card to our RMA centre for a replacement card with the new fixes.
Can you not just send some replacement fans or coolers?
No. While there are 0 issues with the PCB's, we cannot send you replacement fans and/or Twin Frozr coolers to do it yourself. One reason is we want to ensure you do not damage the PCB or cooler during installation (and thus voiding your warranty), but another reason is due to how we design the Twin Frozr coolers. You may not know this, but unlike many of our competitors who simply use the same cooler for every batch of cards, we engineer our coolers differently per each graphics card to ensure each cooler we place onto each GPU can handle the thermals produced from that very GPU since every GPU is different (silicone lottery).
We are very sorry if you have been affected by this issue. We hold our hands up, however we did have good intentions. Please RMA the Graphics Card back to us for a swift replacement.
Can anyone tell me how to send my cards back to MSI for replacements without learning Chinese and/or jumping through hoops? TIA.

you can't send the card directly to MSI for Europe, but via reseller/place of purchase.
if you need more infornation you can ask MSI here about it:

or to ask your reseller.
we can't help more than this

It categorically states that customers experiencing issues with leaking fans should send the cards back to MSI directly.
That's all I'm trying to do.
If you are in Europe, you can't do this

• How to stop RMA'ing and get a NEW device?

I just got my laptop another RMA for service due another major hardware failure. This will be the third RMA since I purchased it in May of last year.
I am active duty military and basically live out of my luggage/in hotels/on my laptop due to having a job that requires over 50% of the time traveling. I am a prior MSI customer (this laptop replaced my old MSI) and feel like I have a lemon.
I can't complete the rest of my college course, can't stream to my followers on Twitch.tv, and can't even Skype my family anymore due to having to wait a few more weeks to get my device back.
In my opinion, I think it would be best to reach out to a manager or someone at MSI and have them understand that I am not their typical gamer/user and request a completely new device.

if oyu just bought laptop recently then store is quilty to let you have re-placement within a limited time idk limit it's diffirent per country but in sweden you can have laptop re-placed to new one within 2 weeks and if you havent you wil only be allowed to have it sent to repair and if that wont solve it or new issue comes up and you send it off 2nd time and a 3rd problem comes and you dont want to rma it again then here in sweden law states your allowed to have laptop re-turned completely have have money back so you can either buy new one from same store or buy new one some where else.
I had to RMA my GS70 once then it returned but it had gpu issue and i had to RMA it shortly again after it got back but then a friend helped me to get store to buy it back by cancelling the bill and then i could buy new one from more trusted and bigger company which now i have had 2nd GS70 without any issue so i had simply more bad luck with other one while this one is more lucky

• Hot GPU diode and noisy fan - 3600rpm

After an hour my iMAC's GPU diode is running at 88° and the CPU fan is noisy at 3600rpm. I have taken it to an Apple certified reseller and they couldn't find anything wrong. Can anyone help suggest a reason why it is running hot and noisy?

Hello davemo73 I have the right the same problem, I have taken to an Apple certified support and they told me that is everything all right with my iMac, when I arrived in my home an surprise! the same issue... noisy fan and rpms too fast. Im really worried about, I dont wanna to change the logical board (60% of imac, too much expensive in my country, like a $1100,00 half cost of new machine.).
Can someone from Apple help us? PLS I'm going crazy!!!

• Mac mini appears to be shutting down due to overheating fan is running, but not strongly

late 2012 mac mini shuts down after running several minutes in a streaming task environment.  Fan is running, but not very forceful.  wondering if the fan itself has a temperature sensor that causes the fan to engage in higher rpms or if that sensor/command comes from somewhere else in the computer

Install a temperature/fan speed app.. I use the free Macs Fan Control app downloaded from the internet. Yes, there are temperature sensors that contorl fan speed

• Creative's policy on RMA'ing second hand go

Hi, I'm just writing with something of a general enquiry regarding Creatives returns/RMA policy, particularly pertaining to second hand goods.
I have recently purchased an X-fi Soundcard second hand which i am expected to recieve shortly, after the purchase went through, i was informed by the seller that "the card doesnt work in my machine" and thus it may be damaged... oh joy.
Essentially, i am wondering whether Creative would still accept an RMA on the item if it did turn out defecti've, or if its second hand status would void any chances of an RMA. If it has any bearing, i am UK based.
Many thanks in advance

Jakk,
Warranty is extend only to the original end-user purchaser and it isn't transferable. A second hand goods won't be cover under the warranty policy. For more information on warranty coverage, you can check the link below.

• Battery draining excessively due to constant fans?

My Macbook has typically had a fairly long battery life, but for the last few weeks it has been **** trying to get anything done.
-The battery goes from 100% to 0 in under 2 hours, or faster if I use higher usage programs like photoshop or games.
-It formerly had anywhere from 4-5 hours of charge, and hadn't gradually weakened since I got it last summer.
-quitting everything but finder doesn't help, and I have only really used Safari, iChat, and word processors for the last month or so. It still takes only 2 hours or so to fully deplete.
The reason for the drain is that the damned fans are going full blast 24/7 and won't even shut off when I close the lid for about a minute. No matter what amount of processing I use the fans go full blast and the case heats up, whereas a few weeks ago they only turned on intermittently, maybe 1/3
of the time.
I think updating to 10.5.7 might help, but I am on 10.5.6 right now...

I checked that just now, the fans are still running, 100% battery charge is set to run out in around 2:30, though I find that to be a little overestimated. usually a 100% charge on this laptop would last over 3:30, before this began.
The only processes running more than 1.0 CPU are the activity monitor itself, and MS Word 2007. I have Safari, Finder, Mail, textedit, and Word open now and the fans are still going.
For some reason, 45-50% of the CPU usage is from the User, 5-6% is from system, and 40% is idle. I see everything as using 0.0 CPU except Word, Safari intermittently, and the activity monitor. occasionally something will go up to .1 for a second...
I also have the battery settings on a custom setting, using the least power but not shutting down every 30 seconds or whatever if idle. Bluetooth is off, airport is on and connecting fine. No external devices are ever really used except the occasional headphones. I keep it muted and on low brightness. I also have 60% of my hard drive open atm, so the drive is nowhere near full.
As far as I know, there is no pref. option for me to change, and the battery drain from the fans being on to combat heating makes sense, but why is it heating if I am not taxing the CPU? I am not blocking the fan ports, I have held the device above a table to prevent anything from being blocked, and it never cools down unless it is in sleep for several minutes.
***? If anyone has a fix for this that does not involve more than a reboot or update, let me know.

• K9N Boot Problem Resolved by BIOS 1.6

Some time back I started a thread about boot problems with my K9N Diamond mobo:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=106372.0
Well, I wound up RMA'ing it due to a HD activity light problem (thread here):
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109973.0
Since the mobo was returned and installed, I haven't had one flaky boot situation.  I had originally suspected either the video card or its drivers.  BUT, the mobo was returned with BIOS version 1.6 installed, and it has worked perfectly ever since.  Plus, no new problems that could be related to that version BIOS have surfaced.
So, if you are considering moving to that version, chalk one satisfied user up here.
As mentioned in the HD activity light thread, that problem ultimately proved to be a defective MSI IDE cable.

Pretty sure.  It has the same serial number; first thing I checked before installing it!

• If My retail fan+cpu fails due to Newcastle temps, who do i make claim with

As title,interesting thought,
If MSI continue to ignore the problem with the 4AX revision of the Newcastle cores (like mine) that are constantly getting high temps thus the cpu fan is working to hard for long periods of times thus maybe failing earlier, who is to blame and who would replace, surely MSI would be to blame as its their software at fault

Hi
I understand your concern, I sure it will be resolved soon, I saw Sab posting that the Nvidea section of the forum were saying a bios fix was either available or coming soon.  If any CPU fan failed within a year or so, I would be RMA ing it to supplier for a new one. If it causes CPU to go down, then that to would be suppliers problem.
cheers

• 15" MBP too hot to handle, gpu artifacting in 3d apps

Just got a 15 inch / 2.16Ghz mbp the other day. Machine runs most programs just fine, but the cpu is idling at 57-60 degrees celcius, and peaking at close to 80C under any kind of load. The chassis (bottom and top rear of computer) becomes too hot to handle (yes, it burns, common problem with these machines, as I have recently discovered), and when I go to play games, I get absolutely massive artifacting.
I even tried (when playing games under windows XP) underclocking the GPU... even more than apple did at the factory. It won't even run properly at 200Mhz core / 180mhz vram. (Normal speed for the x1600 gpu is 470Mhz on the core, apple has it set at just over 300mhz by default, the thing generates too much heat for the cooling system and generates massive artifacts in games even at 200mhz...)
Being a system builder and overclocker in the PC world, I have seen these problems before... but usually only after increasing gpu speeds well past their factory defaults, not slowing them down.
Given that the machine gets too hot to touch under load under both Mac OS X and Windows, and I cant play any games, I am . <-- that close to sending the machine back to apple and getting it replaced (Heard several stories of people recieving Macbooks which overheated, and getting replacements that ran perfectly fine), but before I do, I was wondering if anyone here knew of any solutions to the heat problem OTHER than...
a) the SMC firmware update (its already installed)
b) the thermal paste change (don't want to void warrantee, so opening the machine is out)
Seems silly to cripple a machine like this- if the fans just ran at a reasonable speed, it would be plenty-cool, but they just dont seem to turn on enough. I understand that there's a tradeoff between the thin/lightness of a package and speed, and was ready to accept a warmer-than-your-average-notebook chassis and slightly underclocked gpu, but having the thing burn me and prove to be incapable of rendering 3d content strikes me as being slightly unacceptable.
Anyway, any solutions that don't involve RMA'ing my new machine or voiding the warrantee would be most welcome. Thanks.

Just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity, I tried reinstalling the Apple-supplied GPU drivers.
Still no-go. Here's what planetside (a 3-4 year old game, by the way, nothing super demanding...) looks like after about one minute of gameplay!

Notice the... well, lack of WALLS where WALLS should be, et cetera. Absolutely massive artifacting. Thats under XPsp2 w/ apples drivers. Same thing happens using Omega drivers for the GPU.
Im going to run some loops of 3Dmark now just to document the issue a little better. Oh, and in other news, when Planetside is launching there is loud fan noise and airflow, but once I launch the game and start playing, the fans seem to turn off. Since the fan voltages should vary based on temperatures as measured by various sensors on the machine (usually a diode built into the CPU, plus whatever other sensors apple chose to install), it seems illogical that the fans should run when I go to load the game, or sit at the main menu, and then turn off again once I start playing. Temperatures should either remain the same in-game as at the menu or increase during gamplay due to increased CPU load.
Anyway... yes. If it continues to artifact in a benchmarking program like 3dmark, I guess I'll have to send the machine back. Is it true that they (apple) actually take your machine, take it apart, replace the logic board, and send your machine back to you? If so, I wouldn't have to worry about the harddrive I guess. Would be nice not to have to spend a day installing software and copying media again.
As for the purpose of the macbook... I really dont intend on using it as a "gaming machine" since I already have a desktop for that (which has a 2Ghz dual-core Opteron cpu installed which idles at 3-4 degrees C above ambient air temps on plain air-cooling I might add... and it's very quiet). I really wanted a laptop that was smallish, lightish, game-able laptop without sacrificing things like a decent CPU or optical drives, and well designed functionally. The MBP seemed to deliver in all these categories, and if the GPU would run properly at its stock speed, it would be the perfect machine for me. Quick enough to handle modern games like BF2 and Oblivion on "medium" graphics settings with playable framerates, small, thin, light, and able to boot OSX when I am not gaming (I do love OSX-- its like linux, but hastle free!)
Anyway. Yes. Time to request send-backage I guess. Anyone know where I can do that? (This "support" site seems to be designed as the ultimate decoy to protect apple's tech-support email addresses and phone numbers... lots of "did you try restarting your computer?" and "Are you sure your computer is on?" and "but its supposed to burn you a little" and such, but I can't manage to track down an RMA request phone number or email address. Maybe I should look through my box and stuff. Perhaps on the invoice or something. *shuffles off to dig through paperwork and miscellanious web pages*
Thanks

• Design Flaw in Twin Frozr fans

So, I'm finally creating a thread about this.
There's been reports over the last few years about fans making rattling noises, grinding noises, high pitched whines, whether on cold boot, idle, high RPM, or constantly, and quite frankly I'm tired of MSI ignoring the issue.
There is a design flaw with the Twin Frozr fans.
MSI needs to publicly acknowledge this.
Currently, the only way to get a replacement fan is to send your ENTIRE card in for repair.  Other more reputable companies will send you out an entirely new fansink attachment at no cost.  As one poster said it; "That would be like sending my car to Nissan every time I blow a tire"
My personal experience with Twin Frozr started with Twin Frozr 2 on my GTX 460 Hawks.  The Talon Attack edition started to make a bad grinding noise on cold boot or if it actually got cold enough during idle operation.  When the card warmed up, the noise stopped.  Speeding up the fan to 100% sometimes also caused it to get rid of the noise, but that was only temporary unless the card stayed warm.
My non-hawk exhibited rattling as well, but to a lesser extent.  No grinding noise on cold boot, just a low rattling.
My next card was a GTX 670 PE with Twin Frozr 4.  Surely they fixed the issue by now right?  Wrong!  Within 30 days I started having fan issues.  This fan doesn't rattle, but there is a high pitched whine when the fan is in operation.  The faster the RPM, the louder the whine.  Most people don't even know they have this issue because of the subtle tone of the whine and it being muffled by the fan's air sound at higher RPMs.
That's 3 separate graphics cards all exhibiting an issue with their fans.
There's one thing in common with these issues; it's only caused by the fan closest to the I/O.  This boggles my mind.  Surely if there was a problem with the fan design itself it would affect both fans, right?  I just don't understand it.  This leads me to believe it's a design flaw with the Twin Frozr design.
Some people seem to have an issue with the other fan, but it appears to be rare and not the same type of problem the majority of people are reporting.
Seeing as they want you to lose your card (and $10+ to ship it) for weeks at a time to 'fix' an issue which will no doubt happen again, something needs to be done about this.  Their 'warranty' policy for this issue is completely unacceptable, as is the fact that the fans start acting up within a month of ownership.

I don't think we have a MSI office in Portugal, most brands don't.
Some stores are not reliable they buy from EU retailers some even from Asia retailers and usually they don't give proper support. In Lisbon you have stores like Globaldata, Nanochip, Chiptek and AquaPC they are in business for years, have good customer support and have also good prices.
I'm probably not going to buy any MSI product from now on , for obvious reasons.
Trying to contact a support shoudn't be this hard from a client , at this point I assume anyone that's doesn't want to lose time will just give up.
As a consumer I was forced to RUN and TRY to find msi support , MSI support mail doesn't event exist , since I made this thread it still hasn't been changed.
I really liked MSI ( I still have my 875P MSI neo here with my p4 and the NX6800 working ) it's like saying goodbye to an old friend that has been by my side since P4 times.
I'll buy msi products in US , or in another country maybe , but never MORE in portugal.
This is not cause of the shops , I recommend everyone to buy in the shops listed !!
In fact most of the portuguese shops tried to help me find msi support ( even though they weren't the stored that sold me the card ).
I really don't want ppl to get this mixed up, the problem here is MSI not acknowledging a problem that is simple to fix, having a non-existant email on their webpage as support for over 4 months and the fact that as a consumer I was forced to jump trough loops to actually contact MSI itself !
Every portuguese shop I contacted was super nice and really helpful pointing me to the new msi email
And actually the fix ( hot needle fix forum post link ) came from a shop reply.
US support was always super nice and helpful !
I was forced to fix my fan with the help of users.
If right now my MSI gpu is working is thanks to guru3d and hardwareoc and simillar forums ( thanks to everyone that posted Twin Frozn fixes , this may not mean much , but really .. thanks for helping me out ! )
MSI didn't help or even try to help me , I had to go out of my way to get help , and I never did.
I know some of those stores , they have great prices , but if I buy anything in portugal I'll buy other brands for obvious reasons. ( it was actually one of those shops that helped me pinpoint the "real" msi email )
I am a customer , I should be treated as such , I was joked and pushed around emails , found emails that don't even exist , I was ignored and left looking at a card going dead.
Maybe for some of you it's easy , you just buy another one .... and maybe that's the custommer MSI wants. But that's not me.
Pointing me to places to buy MORE is almost insulting at this point. I wont buy more ... I would be stupid of I did.
I just hope some other person that has MSI and is having this problem with Twin Frozn fans ( that msi refuses to acknowledge as THEIR problem !! ) can fix them themselves or take some info from my posts and others to at least understand what is happening.
From my pov , the fan eventually has some sort of lubrication problem , and due to that it starts to wobble , after that the coils heat up to a point it wobbles even more.
Due to the high temps the fan either "looses" enough to dump all the lubing out.
At some point the fan will heat up so much the plastic IS REALLY hot to the touch and fells that it can be actually moldable ( so I assume this is really bad )
This leads to the start-stop problem , the fan tries to kick itself on , but just makes things worse.
This leads to a fan that fails in 2-3 years.
MSI should either had a way to put oil in the fan OR just start to be ready to replace them.
The fact that IS an ebay market for Twin Frzn fans is just flabbergasting .
I wish I had a better view on this , but seriously looking at this thread,  and seeing all the steps I have done , to find there are others like me that have a failing fan and that the ones that aren't ignored like me have to RMA a card for a simple fan doesn't give me any sort of confidence in this brand.
MSI has one of the best gpu coolers  , honestly it's so god that after all this mess I stand as a testimony for it being one of the BEST gpu coolers around ! All my MSI products so far have been great ... but this experience was just ... weird ..
I wish MSI would contact the ppl that are in my position and help them , it's just a fan  , it's an easy fix and it's easy to replace.
There are lots of ppl right now with fans starting to fail , just take their card , replace the fan and send them back , and MSI will have happy customers , HAPPY cause the brand CARED !
I'm only 1 client , MSI hardly "fells" me leaving ... I really like MSI ... so I wish this won't ever happen again to no one !
I have been ignored in mailing for TDR problems , after that about the 12h+ card artifacting being fixed with cold boot ( I assume this was an nvidia problem )
After using certain drivers that didn't TDR my card ( I have enough PSU for it so ... it's not the PSU ) and having been 2 years finding my own "solutions" to problems ... being ignored and just struggling to get help from MSI for a stupid FAN a cheap part and being hard just to contact them to get no answer .... and getting help from other users while MSI ignores me ? ... I'm thinking on leaving the brand ...
The fans are now working 100% , I'll post info when and if they fail ( if I see my "fix" stopped working ) .
It has now been a long time since 2011 and my first reports , and its been almost 6 months since I contacted msi about the portuguese email listed not existing.
The email is still there , that non-existent email is STILL listen in MSI website RIGHT NOW after me being emailing them about it for 4+ months ,as a customer,  I can only assume they either ignore people , or they have a terrible communications internally .
Again after all this mess , I would be kinda stupid to support or try to buy another product from this brand , MSI support was always great and was the main reason I bought msi products, all this posts are from a person that was truly SHOCKED in everything that is happening and the feeling that no one cared.

• MSI GTX 680 fan automatic speed problem

Hi guys..first sorry for my bad english..
I buy today MSI GTX 680 and I have problem with automatic fan speed...i had GTX 570 TF and that was working perfect but with GTX 680 I have weird problem, when GPU temperature goes up, fan RPM speed goes down
Screenshot:
Now I disable auto speed and set speed manually, but that's not best solution becouse I must manually set higher speed when i want play BF3, Call of duty MW3 etc...
Anyone know what is problem?
I update GPU drivers, MSI afterburner ( 2.2.0 ), chipset drivers...
Thanks!

Fans or other spare parts aren't sold separately. If your vga is still covered by warranty contact MSI if seller refuses rma: >>How to contact MSI.<<
That of course means the vga needs to be rma'ed. Alternatively you can use an aftermarket cooler like Alpenfoehn Peter, Prolimatech MK26 or Accelero Xtreme III

• N220GT Fan Speed Problem?

Newbie here, so be gentle with me! I hope that you guys can help with my problem? I have a new Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo P900 desktop PC with an MSI N220GT video card fitted. Recently, I have noticed that the video card fan seems to permanently on full speed, making it quite noisy. I have installed Afterburner to try and regulate the speed but although there is a fan section in the display there are no settings shown and nothing can be adjusted. The Auto box does not seem to do anything. The video card temperature is pretty stable at around 39deg. The noise generated by the permanently-running fan is pretty annoying - is it meant to to be this way? Surely there must be some way of regulating it to run automatically rather than full-on all the time?

Thanks for your positive feedback.    Its appreciated in amongst some posts that are not as complimentary
Do give us feedback once you have it installed and in use.
One more thing you now need to consider, whether you get the 460 or 560, is your current power supply. Please check the label on the side of the PSU and advise what the max amp ratings are on the 12V rail/s. You may have been given a lower end GPU due to limited power on the PSU.
Fujitsu have their own proprietary PSUs with exceptional efficiencies (94%) and you will need to check with your supplier in case you have to change the PSU regarding the guarantee implications.
From what I could find your model has a Max. output of single power supply of 280 W,which will not be enough for a higher specced GPU. https://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/docs/ds-esprimo-p900-progreen.pdf

• GPU Overheat Shutdown

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro purchased in early 2006. I am still under Tiger. A serious overheating problem has started over the last few months. As soon as the computer turns on its fans run at 100%. The computer used to overheat and shutdown when doing video "intensive" things such as watching a DVD, but now even if only safari is open, the computer will get very hot, with GPU temperatures up to 180F (82C). The computer instantly turns off with GPU temps from 175F-185F, but never below. Having the computer run on battery delays the overheating. Also, if I place the computer on ice packs then it does not overheat, though the fans remain at 100%. I have tried SMCcontrol but as the fans are running at max this doesn't help. All updates are installed.
Are there any suggestions? Is it really the GPU or could it be something else? I have heard that there might be too much thermal coupling grease on the heatsink and that reapplying the proper amount could help. Should I try that? Thanks.

I would take the computer in to an Apple repair center. It should not overheat as you are describing. I have the early 2006 MBP and have never experience overheating. I do not use any fan control software. Did you install the firmware and SMC firmware updates? If not, then you should as they helped to mitigate some of the heat problems in the early 2006 model.
Although some have disassembled the computer and did the thermal grease fix, there was little if any evidence to suggest that there was a problem with the applications of thermal compound in these models. Mostly the problem was due to the fans operating at too low an idle speed. The firmware updates increased the idle speed which helped mitigate the heat some.
The GPU running at 82ºC under heavy stress is not really above of normal. Typical extreme for heavy CPU and GPU loads is 85-90ºC. Normal idle temp would be around 35ºC or less if in a well-cooled room and providing proper ventilation to the computer (elevating the rear of the computer about 3/4" will provide better air circulation.)

• IMac 21.5" fans start??

Hi, I got my very first mac about 4 weeks ago and I'm loving it (should have bought one years ago). Coming from a PC background I realise the importance of component cooling and I am a little concerned about the cooling of my lovely new mac.
My fans never seem to spin up any higher than the default setting (checked using StatPro), so my question is this:
At what temps will the fans increase in speed (CPU, HDD, Optical), as I have been been putting the mac underload playing games through Windows 7 Pro 64bit under Boot Camp 3.1?
FYI - CPU 70c GPU 80c
Thanks - a very happy new mac owner.

Welcome to the light side!
Apple doesn't publish the information you are requesting and I've yet to see anyone reliably state at what temps the fans spin higher. Remember the fans will always be on, if you want to monitor internal temps you can download the iStat Pro widget. Your operating temperatures seem just fine so I would not worry at all about them but it's OK to monitor this information.
Also some people like to tweak their fans speeds and use SMCFanControl, this application is slightly controversial some think it should not be used due to premature fan wear and other possible issues however many others feel it's fine. Apple definitely doesn't like it because it allows users to tweak default settings which could cause issues that affect warranties and possible software issues. This being said if you decide to use it use it at your own risk.

Roger

• Was researching the MSI R9 series fan failure plague when...

I found this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=177493.0
Had to sign up just to laugh at the morons. Bitcoin and mining are criminal? Damn, guess that means MSI shouldn't deal with Tiger Direct. What's more likely? MSI hates bitcoin only when it comes to support. The sales they will take, failures due to constant use cannot be condoned.
Whats worse is the price they're charging for the fans. Clearly profitable to include bad fans, refuse to RMA a card due to "mining" or rather OpenCL use. Here's hoping they don't ban Folding@Home.

Well, as there is no use referring to a thread more than a year old and starting a thread with no technical query there is no point keeping this in vga section. Besides none in the linked thread had been an official MSI position as everyone who posted including the moderator were volunteer users.
