11.2.0.3 Patch Bundle and opatch installation approach

Hi,
I have installed the below 11.2.0.3 (64 bit) products in my windows 2008 server
1. Oracle Grid Infrastructure for standalone server
2. Oracle database server software and created a standalone database with ASM in this home.
Now i need to apply Update 5 patch bundle and some bug fix patches.
Since there are 2 home in my server what is the right approach for applying the patch bundle and opatch ?
When i went through the patch bundle installation document i could see these 2 options
1. Patch Installation Instructions for Single Instance
2. Patch Installation Instructions for RAC
Since i have 2 homes (OraCrs11g_home1 & OracDb11g_home1 ) in my server i am not sure which patch installation option i should choose and proceed.
Can someone assist me ?
Thanks,
Ashok Kumar.G

no we have to prepare a test POC but we don't have Xterm so had to use silent mode.using VNC server is best option to install or upgrade databases/grid Infrastructure.
VNC server runs on the server and no fear of loosing network connection as in case of connecting thorugh putty.
also you can open GUI in VNC server without need of any xterm or xwindows .
So ask your SA to install VNC on your server and use it.

  • Patches Uninstall on patch bundle unassign - by design?

    Hi,
Recently we began testing ZCM 10.3.3 for deploying Microsoft patches to our Windows XP desktops. We have come across
a situation that whilst after some investigation looks like it might be operating as designed, we think is perhaps
the result of an over sight in how the product works. I thought I would post the scenario here to see if anyone else
had come across this and if so, what your thoughts on it might be. I am tempted to log a SR, but this might be a well
    known occurrence?
Essentially what happened was that we created a patch bundle and assigned it to a device group that contained test
machines. The patch deployment went as expected with no issues observed or reported. A week later I removed the
relationship between the patch bundle and the test device group. Immediately (on next device refresh) the machines in
the test device group began to uninstall the patches in the patch bundle that had just been "unassigned". In
addition, interactive "remediate.exe" errors were thrown in any active user sessions on those machines. The errors
seemed to be related to patches that werent technically able to be uninstalled anyway.
Initially we were a little stumped by this as the ZPM patch bundle was not enabled for Uninstall, however looking at
the bundle a little closer we noticed that the actual individual patch bundles being referenced in the install action
DID have Uninstall enabled - if fact it appeared that every patch was enabled for uninstall - even those that werent
    technically able to be uninstalled.
When considering this in conjunction with our global ZEnworks Explorer Configuration to Uninstall unassigned bundles
after 0 days, things started to make a little more sense - but I'm not sure this is how it should actually work.
To make a long story short, I personally dont think that the global Zenworks Explorer Configuration to uninstall
unassigned bundles after a certain amount of days should apply to patch bundles, or at least patch bundles should be
able to be excluded from this. We have this setting set to 0 days so that when we unassign licensed applications,
they are immediately removed from the desktops they have been deployed to - this is to ensure we are confident of our
licensing position in terms of how many copies of a application we may be licensed for and how many we actually have
    installed in our fleet.
The implication of this situation is that for us, every time we deploy a patch, we need to maintain the assignment between
the patch and the device. On the face of it, this doesnt seem like a viable long term solution for a whole host of
    reasons.
So out of this I have a couple of questions:
    1. Has anyone else come across this, and if so, a) do you think this is a reasonable way for the product to be
operating, and b) how have you worked with (or around) it.
    2. Is it possible to disable uninstall for the individual patch bundles that ZPM creates, or will ZPM simply "fix"
    them?
I'd be very interested in peoples thoughts on this.
    Cheers,

    Hi Shaun,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, the "Ignore chained dependencies" box is checked on the individual patch bundles and "uninstall" is disabled for the parent patch bundle itself. Do you think this sounds like a bug? If thats the case, I'll definitely open an SR for it.
    Cheers,

  • Distinction among  terms: Oracle Patch Set, Oracle Patch Bundle, ecc

    Hi to all,
a customer asked me to update an Oracle database 10.1.3.0 on Windows 32 platform. THe only patches installed are **5556081** and *5557962*..
I looked for new updated patches and I founded some Oracle Recommended Patches ID 756671.1 and Oracle Patch Bundles ID 1207176.1 for 10.2.3.0.
Honestly I don't know how to proceed in the sense that i don't know if it is better to apply these bundle patches or to go directly to Oracle Patch Set 10.2.4.0 or 10.2.5.0 for a better update.
What is the difference between Oracle Patch Bundle and Oracle Patch Set?? and the difference between Oracle patch Set and Oracle Patch Set Update???
Any help will be well appreciated..I need to do this update asap

Pl clarify what you mean by "10.1.3.0", "10.2.3.0", "10.2.4.0" and "10.2.5.0" - there a no such Oracle versions
    I believe you mean 10.1.0.3, 10.2.0.3, 10.2.0.4 and 10.2.0.5
If so, all of the above are patch sets on top of the base release (10.1 or 10.2). It is always recommended to update to the latest patch set release.
Pl note that both 10.1 and 10.2 are de-supported - you should be using the latest 11gR2 version.
Patch set updates (PSU) are additional bundled fixes on top of patch sets - see this MOS Doc

  • How to determine patch bundle level?

    Hi, there,
Newb to Exadata here (apologies if this is obvious). We're looking to upgrade our Exadata machine (v2) from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 and we need to know which patch bundle we're currently on. I tried figuring it out myself and I can't find how to do it. Anyone know?
    Mark

You can use the registry$history or dba_registry_history, but those views will only show patches that have been applied against the database in the patch post-installation steps. If you create a new database after applying the patch, the application will not show up in the registry history views.
I would definitely compare your opatch lsinventory against note 888828.1. Check out the "enumerated patch list" which will give you the expected patch list for an opatch lsinventory. Also, remember that you have to be on 11.2.0.1 BP6 or higher before upgrading to 11.2.0.2.

  • Critical Patch update vs Patch Bundle

Our servers runs on sun solaris sparc 64 bit and oracle 11.1.0.7 with CPUAPR2009 patches. We found the latest patch bundle 8658581.8 would resolve many of our issues.
I need to know whether the patch bundle would be bundled with the CPU patches since the patch bundle was released after the CPU patches and I have also read a document which says
    Are Recommended Patches Cumulative ?
Yes, Recommended Patches are cumulative for a given target configuration. The latest Recommended Patches for a given target configuration will contain all fixes included in the previous ones.
This patch bundle is a recommended patches.
Please help me in resolving the patches to apply. And please provide me more clarity on Thanks
    Regards,
    Ilan

    Hi Ilan,
I'm not sure if you received the answer you were seeking elsewhere.
As you may know, the n-Apply Critical Patch Updates (CPU's) are released on a quarterly basis and are cumulative in nature. The CPUs are released to address security vulnerabilities, primarily. At the time of their release, they each contain groupings of security fixes (called molecules). Each of these molecules contain multiple related patches and the molecules can be applied independently of one another.
Now, that being said - there is a chance that Oracle could release interim (i.e. one-off) patches, merge patches, and patch bundles in between CPU releases and in between patchset releases. The fixes provided in these interim patches, merge patches, and patch bundles should also be included in subsequent CPU releases (if they address security vulnerabilities) and in subsequent patchset releases (if you're not already on the terminal patchset release for your version).
As for the CPU releases: prior to the patch installation, the following checks are performed for each molecule patch being installed:
    - Conflicts (patch to be installed contains modules which conflict with existing patch in the Oracle Home)
    - Subsets (patch to be installed is a subset of an existing patch in the Oracle Home)
    - Duplicates (patch to be installed is the same as an existing patch in the Oracle Home)
If you encounter a situation where the particular patch to be installed is in conflict with one or more other patches which have previously been applied to the same Oracle Home, then you will need to file a Service Request with Oracle Global Customer Support to request a merge patch to merge the conflicting patches together into one individual patch.
If the particular patch to be installed is a subset or duplicate of an existing patch in the Oracle Home, then there is no need for the patch to be applied to the Oracle Home as the fix it contains already exists there. For this reason, the CPU installation instructions from the README.html direct you to run OPatch with the -skip_subset and -skip_duplicate options to skip attempting to apply any patches that are subset or duplicate of existing patches in the Oracle Home. See the README.html file from the most recent CPU (July - 8534387) for complete details about the CPU, including what molecules of fixes it contains.
I hope this information helps clarify things for you rather than confuse you further. Keep in mind I am responding with a general answer which should address your question. I have not reviewed 8658581 specifically to see what this patch addresses.

  • Error when try to install CPU - Critical Patch Update with OPatch

    Hello gurus,
I´m faccing with a problem... After I update the patch set to 10.2.0.4 and install the interim patches for Linux X86_64 now I´m trying to import/install the Oracle Critical Patch Update - Oracle CPU patch!!
I´m trying to import it with OPatch, and I already update this OPatch tool for the last version even before proceeding with installation of Oracle CPU!
I've tried to import it by two methods. The first I tried to apply as described in the relevant README file inside of CPU patch directory, and I used in this case the following command:
    redhatsap:orajmd>  unzip p9119226_10204_<platform>.zip
    redhatsap:orajmd>  cd 9119226
    redhatsap:orajmd>  opatch napply -skip_subset -skip_duplicate
    opatch: Command not found
After that previous error, I tried again but now with other method that is described in note 839182 (Installing patches using OPatch) with the following command:
    redhatsap:orajmd>  cd 9119226
    redhatsap:orajmd>  $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch/opatch apply

Hello again Joe Bo... and all of others,
I´m with a doubt after installing the CPU patch, which is related to post-installation tasks. I´m in this momment install the SAP System and it was during this installation that sapinst asked me to install the database and all other activities after this installation that are related to the database, for example, the updating of database patches.
At README file in chapter 3.3.2 Post Installation Instructions is described the following:
After installing the patch, perform the following actions:
1.Load modified .sql files into the database, as explained in Section 3.3.2.1.
2.Recompile views in the database, if necessary, as explained in Section 3.3.2.2.
In this momment, as you certainly know, I still don´t have a database because the sap system isn´t yet totally installed (I´m in phase 8 of sapinst wizard).
I only have to do this "Post Installation Tasks" when I have a database, this database will be created after that phase 8 - so now I don´t need to perform the post steps... am I right?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Oracle 10g rel2 Forms on windows Vista (Patches7047034 and Opatch 6880880).

    Hello All,
I have been trying to apply patch 7047034 by using Opatch Universal Installer (Opatch 6880880). But I have not been able to do this. The main reason of applying this patch is to enable my forms 10.1.2.0.2 to be upgraded to 10.1.2.3., so that it can run on windows vista with Internet explorer 7.
At the momment it does not run the forms it just show a grey page after trying to run the Test.fmx form.
If I try to run any other form it comes up with an ORA-12560 :TNS: Protocol Adapter Error.
When I click on the ok button, it comes up with the login page. When I try to re-login without entring the connect identifier it comes up with thesame error message ORA-12560 :TNS: Protocol Adapter Error.
But when i try relogin using a connect identifier it comes up with ORA-12154: TNS: Could not resolve connect identifier specified. Then a grey page is all i see on the screen. I found that a bit strange since am already logged on, on forms 10g. Why is is it still asking me for further credentials.
Having read several literature from the forum i thought the patch was what i needed. And this is what i did to apply the patch.
    After setting environment variable ORACLE_HOME
    C:\DevSuiteHome_1>set ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1
    C:\DevSuiteHome_1>cd opatch
    C:\DevSuiteHome_1\OPatch>set ACTIVE_STATE__PERL=TRUE
    C:\DevSuiteHome_1\OPatch>opatch apply c:\DevSuiteHome_1\OPatch\p7047034_10105_WI
    NNT
"OPatch could not detect Perl. Please set PERL5LIB appropriately and invoke Perl
"OPatch is certified with Perl Version 5.6.1."
"Invoke OPatch manually using the following command format:"
    " <path to Perl>/perl <path to OPatch>/opatch.pl <patch command> [options]"
"You can use the following command format to view help information:"
    " <path to Perl>/perl <path to OPatch>/opatch.pl [<patch command>] -help"
OPatch returns with error code = 0
I also noticed that the PERL directory has version 5.8.3 instead of the 5.6.1
I had gone on the perl website to download perl 5.6.1, but i found the following
Latest stable version of ActivePerl 5.6: 5.6.1 build 638
    Gzipped tarball (Unix)
    Zip file (Windows)
    Patch against Perl 5.6.1 sources
I do not know which one to download. Is it the zip file for windows or the Patch against perl 5.6.1
Please does anybody have any idea what i need to do.
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers

    Hello Hsawwan,
Thanks for your reply. It is not part of Oracle E-Business. But this is Oracle Forms Application server release 10.1.2.0.2, and oracle Database 10g. rel2, installed seperatelly. I can connect ok to the database from forms 10g. But when it comes to running the forms, the browser comes up and i can see the java sign on the browser, after that it prompts me for username, password and connect identifier. As mentioned earlier, when i supply 2 criteria ie, the username scott, and password tiger I get ORA-12560: TNS: Protocol Adapter error. However, when i supply all 3 questions, ie username, password and connect identifier- ORCL, I get error message
ORA- 12154: TNS: Could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
Also i need to download Perl 5.6.1, does any body knows where i can download this?
Because the I currently have perl 5.8.3 and opatch is pointing to perl 5.6.1.
The site i found has error cannot display page.
Also where is the application env file located, and what should i be setting in this file.
Sorry for the long explanation. I hope I am making some sense.
    Thanks in advance

  • SCCM/WSUS issue after importing March CSA patch bundle

Hi, I am having an issue with security patch deployment since Tuesday night.  Debugging is ongoing.  I am running SCCM 2012 CU2.
Coincidentally, the problem appeared shortly after importing the March XP CSA (Custom Support Agreement) patch bundle into SCCM.  From the client end, WUAHandler.log reported continuous failures/retries.  On lower-end machines, system performance
became very poor.  From the server end, starting up the Windows Server Update Services mmc (yes, I know you're not supposed to be doing anything in here, which I'm not) results in a connection error.  The detailed error message is shown further down.
It was difficult to get the client machines to stop "thrashing" per WUAHandler.log.  It wasn't until I de-installed/re-installed WSUS and ASP.NET that things quieted down yesterday afternoon.  All appeared to be stable until this morning
when I  re-added "Windows XP Custom Support" under the SUP Component Properties tab, imported the CSA bundle info, initiated a CAB synchronization from Microsoft, and re-enabled Software Updates on the clients.
Again, I would get the error when starting up the Windows Server Update Services mmc.
I am doing everything again, but this time one step at a time.  My working theory is that there is some kind of corruption caused by the CSA import (this worked just fine up until Feb.).  A few hours ago, Microsoft published a new CSA
patch bundle because a patch was apparently forgotten.  Is it possible that there was some kind of corruption included with the original bundle published on Tuesday?
I will post what I find as a result of my debugging.
    Thanks,
    Nick.
The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.
Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.
The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,
Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

Yes, WCM.log showed the same 503 error starting on the Wednesday morning at 2:53am, and I also noticed wsuspool had stopped. My most noticeable symptom was the thrashing of wuahandler.log on the clients, causing poor system performance on machines with 2gb
of memory. Multiple de-installs/re-installs of WSUS failed to clear the issue until we increased the memory setting in IIS.

  • Applying recommended patch bundles to a Data Guard environment.

I've learned that there are 3 recommended patch bundles for 10.2.0.4 Data Guard, as follows:
7937113 - 10.2.0.4 Data Guard Logical Recommended Patch Bundle #1
7936993 - 10.2.0.4 Data Guard Physical Recommended Patch Bundle #1
7936793 - 10.2.0.4 Data Guard Broker Recommended Patch Bundle #1
My question is this...should I apply the logical and physical patch bundles to the primary database as well?
    Thanks,
    Michael Anderson
OCP - Bank of the West

That's what I suspected. Now, in my environment, I could never conceive of a situation where I would switch roles between the primary and the logical standby database, so I would only apply the DG physical patch bundle to the primary database but not the DG Logical patch bundle. Agree?

  • Scheduled multi-patch Bundle - will it work?

A while back we started trying out ZPM for all our patching, soon found that using it for Microsoft patches was a) a nightmare to manage and b) slowed our ZCM database down to a crawl for 8 hours a day while it did something odd with the ZPM log tables. Anyhow I've since deleted all Microsoft patches from Zen and gone over to WSUS for the Microsoft stuff, works a treat so I'm leaving that where it lies.
However we really need to push out some important Flash and Java updates (also found Google Chrome in the list so that would be nice too) and here's how I want to do it...
    1) set the updates to install on a timed schedule and only install during this window
    2) set a requirement on the patch Bundle to only run if HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon is set to 0 (i.e. the machine isn't in the middle of imaging as ZPM made a mess of things when it cuts in too early)
    3) run Flash, Java and Google Chrome patches one by one i.e. the first one completes, next one starts and so on
    4) run this Bundle daily so if machines miss it one time they grab it the next, although if the Bundle has already run successfully it doesn't reinstall every time (as that would just be silly)
    5) run the updates successfully whether the user has admin rights or not (UAC may be on as ZCM 11.2.3a seems to have problems with Computer GPOs)
I tried doing multiple scheduled Bundles for each product individually which seemed to work, bit of a pain to manage though so I then tried a multiple Bundle. Thus far I've tried it two ways without success:
    1) using the Deploy Remediation wizard and setting schedule in there (doesn't seem to run on schedule despite the Agent on a client knowing the Bundle is there and on schedule)
    2) use Deploy Remediation to create the individual ZPM Bundles then make a separate Bundle that calls the ZPM ones. Worked on one machine where nothing had previously run but failed on another where the patches had already been applied.
I don't really want to use baselines as they are in 11.2.3a as they don't seem to work that well and don't give me control over when patches are applied. Can't go to 11.3 until summer at the earliest so that's out the equation as well. Any suggestions for how to achieve the above and where I might be going wrong?

  • Patch Bundle Deploy Remediation settings

Got ZPM up and running and seems to be working OK on a test machine, just got a few quick qu's on behaviours when deploying updates:
If I select a group of patches and want to use this as a baseline for all my machines am I best in using
    a) a static group \ folder
    b) applicable devices
I don't really like the idea of "All non-patched" as it gives me no control over what goes on so leaving that out as an option. I've noticed if I do "applicable devices" the Bundle filters out some of the patches (ones it knows are already on the machine?) but if I do a Folder \ Group every patch is listed as an Install action. Chances are I need to use option a) to be sure I'm catching every machine so will ZPM just skip updates in the Install phase if they're on the machine already?
Also when setting the Mandatory Baseline settings what I want to achieve is to allow the user to have full control over the reboot process i.e. they can reboot now, reboot later (snooze) or not reboot at all so my first guess on the settings was this:
    Suppress Reboot: YES
    Allow User to cancel: YES
Time to show dialog before reboot: 120
    Allow User to snooze: YES
When deploying some patches I saw a box slide out from the system tray but it disappeared before I could do anything with it (hence setting the above to 120 seconds). Question is do any of the options override each other e.g. if I set the dialog to 120 will that auto reboot even though I've allowed user to suppress it?

I am also interested in the best process to accomplish patch deployment. I have noticed that some patches tend to fail due to a variety of issues. Once the patch has been deployed whether it fails or not it is considered deployed and a Verify or redeployment of the patch is required to patch things up.
As far as a baseline setup this will provide several options that from my understanding are unrelated to each other. ie a "Snooze" setting of 120 seconds is not the same as a force reboot setting. This setup also doesn't seem to have any effect for the settings that are used for Patch deployment outside of the baseline setup. So if you deploy to a group or set of devices the settings listed in the baseline settings do not hold true to the patch bundles settings.
I too like the idea of baseline setup for specific dynamic groups and have played with them on specific groups. I haven't seen any major issues but have also heard the horror stories and remarks not to use baselines in this way.
Here is what I have done so far. I assign the patch bundles by month to the dynamic group (ie Windows 7). The end user notify settings are setup so that I add my departments information to the reboot notice that scrolls up near the system tray. I setup a allow user to snooze for the 120 seconds and force a reboot after 10 hours. This gives my end user a full days work before the device must be rebooted. Only complaint I have had from my end users is that the pop-up seems to be to persistent and they had wished for a far less notification time say once every few hours.
I am looking for a better way to deploy patch's then I currently have. I would like to have patch's deploy out if they have failed before. I always looked at the baseline as that way but with Novell documentation stating not to do this I have moved away from this deployment type. I would like to have Critical MS patch's deploy out and have a way to verify that the patch is deployed and if not redeploy automatically.
The largest issue I have with patch deployment is that the large part of my deployment are student computers. So if the patch process in place takes longer then a half hour then the chance is extremely great that the laptop will either be place in sleep/hibernation mode or shutdown completely. Keeping the patch bundles to a small deployment seems to be the best way to go but I have had major issues with Patch deployment showing a successful deployment only to have the patch's for that device to show a non-patched. From what I can see from another post this is a known issue with a workaround.

  • Patch 5391326 using opatch

    Hi,
I'm applying patch 5391326 using opatch utility. I receive this error message :
OPatch detected non-cluster Oracle Home from the inventory and will patch the local system only.
Please shut down Oracle instances running out of this ORACLE_HOME
    (Oracle Home = /sandbox/migration/oracle3/product/FMIS/9.2.0)
Is this system ready for updating?
    Please respond Y|N >
Should I realy stop the other instances runing ? It is difficult since they are productions ?
    Any solution ?
    Many thanks before.

Just a side note, you should thoroughly read and follow the patch note while you do patching. Especially if there's production DB involved.
The README file come with the patch mentioned.
You should not only shutdown the instance but also other processes like listener and enterprise manager etc.
-- Before patching, completely shutdown all processes within the Oracle home. It is not recommended to restart the Oracle HTTP Server or the middle tier home until all associated database and Metadata Repository homes have been successfully patched and restarted. This is to accommodate any dependency requirements with any database objects in use.

  • Patch 6880880 (Upgrade Opatch Utility)

    Hi Guys,
I need to apply Patch 6880880. From what I understand from the documentation and some posts about this patch is that this patch is nothing but upgrading the version of hpatch/Opatch.
When I unzip folder p6880880_101000_MSWIN-x86-64.zip, it makes a folder called Opatch (according to earlier posts I need to overwrite the existing folder OPatch folder) in the Hyperion directory .
But I am afraid to do that because the new OPatch folder resulting from unzipping the p6880880_101000_MSWIN-x86-64.zip file doesnt contain hpatch.bat.
I need hpatch.bat because I further need to apply couple of more patches (9976978 and 11794962) to fix some HFM security issue. And the patch 6880880 is pre-requisite for patches 9976978 and 11794962.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply John!
You mean just rename old Opatch folder to Opatch_old and unzip the new folder to D:\Hyperion?. Or make a copy of old Opatch folder in some other directory and then just simply unzip the new Opatch folder and overwrite the existing?.
Also, I hope by doing this any existing patch that has been applied in the past doest get effected?
    Thanks
