11.2.0.3 RAC on HPUX ASM certification

Hi All, I'm planning to install 11.2.0.3 RAC on HPUX, during the certification searching, I found below result:
a) Oracle Cloud File System, the certification list not showing any HPUX platform.  (I'm planning to use ASM cluster FS)
b) Oracle Real Application Clusters showing the HPUX platform.
Is it meant that ASM cluster FS is not certified on HPUX platform, and need to go by 3rd party certified cluster FS, before I can install the RAC DB ?

Hi,
Yes ACFS is not supported on HP-UX still, but you can install RAC and configure ASM. The options you have is install RAC with ASM.
>>Is it meant that ASM cluster FS is not certified on HPUX platform, and need to go by 3rd party certified cluster FS, before I can install the RAC DB ?
You dont need to install any 3rd party cluster, just install oracle CRS and configure ASM. There are plenty of documents but you can have a look at this doc http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24615.pdf

  • Upgrading clusterware and RAC database including ASM

    Hi All,
I have a 3 node RAC database with ASM running on RHEL4(32bit). current version is 10.2.0.1. I want to upgrade clusterware, database and ASM to 10.2.0.4.
Please let me know the patch number for this upgradation.
At the time of googling i found that 1st we have to upgrade 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3 then we can upgrade it to 10.2.0.4. Is it true?
    Thanks

You are absolutely correct. Database should be upgraded at last. I may be wrong regarding upgrading of ASM. but what my thought is saying it should be upgraded or it may upgrade when we will upgrade our database. So please think little bit on it. ASM has its own instance. we are upgrading clusterware and database. why we are not upgrading our ASM. Then what should be the method to upgrade ASM.
Please correct me in i am wrong.

  • Reinstalling Oracle 11gR2 RAC Grid Problem - ASM Disks Group

    Folks,
    Hello.
I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer.
I have been installing Grid Infrastructure using runInstaller in the first VM rac1 from step 1 to step 9 of 10.
On the step 9 of 10 in the Wizard, accidentally, I touch the Mouse, and the Wizard is gone.
The directory for installing Grid in the 2 VMs is the same: /u01
In order to make sure everything is correct, I delete entire directory /u01 in the 2 VMs and install Grid in rac1 again.
I have understood it's not the right way to delete /u01. The right way is to follow the tutorial
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e22489/rem_orcl.htm#CBHEFHAC
But I have deleted /u01 and need to fix one by one. I install Grid again and get the error message on step 5 of 9 as follows:
[INS - 30516] Please specify unique disk groups.
    [INS-3050] Empty ASM disk group.
Cause - Installer has detected the disk group name provided already exists on the system.
Action - Specify different disk group.
In Wizard, the previous Disk Group name is "DATA" and its Candidate disks (5 ASMDISKs) are gone. I try to use a different name "DATA2", but no ASMDISKs come up under "Candidate disks". For "ALL Disks", all ASMDISKs cannot be selected.
I want to use the same ASM disk group "DATA" and don't want to create a new disk group.
    My question is:
How to have the previous ASM disks and its group "DATA" come up under "Candidate Disks" so that can use it again ?
    Thanks.

Hi, in case this helps anyone else. I got this INS-30516 error too was stumped for little while. I have 2 x 2-node RAC which are hitting same SAN. The first-built RAC has a DATA diskgroup. When went to build second RAC on new ASM disk new DIskgroup (but same diskgroup name DATA) got INS-30516 about diskgroup name already in use etc. Finally figured out all that was required was to restrict diskstring using button in installer to only retrieve the LUNS for this RAC (this was quick and dirty - all LUNS for both RAC being presented to both RAC). Once diskstring only searched for the LUNS required for this RAC only, e.g.
    ORCL:DATA_P* (for DATA_PD and FRA_PD)
    the error went away.
I also have DATA_DR and FRA_DR presenting to both RAC. Apparently it scans the header and if it finds a diskgroup name that is already in use based on the diskstring scan it will not allow reuse of the diskgroup name since it has no way of knowing that the other ASM disks are for a different RAC.

  • Please verify my RAC install with ASM procedure with a question.

    Good morning.
My installation procedure on RAC with ASM (ASM will be on separate home from DB):
    1. Install clusterware 10.2.0.1
    2. Apply database patchset 6810189 upgrade clusterware to 10.2.0.4
    3. Apply CRS patch bundle #4 8436582 to clusterware
    4. Install oracle DB home 10.2.0.1
    5. Apply database patchset 6810189 upgrade to 10.2.0.4
    6. Apply DB PSU (patch# 8576156) 10.2.0.4.1 (includes CPUJUL2009) to the oracle home
(steps 7-9 are similar as step 4-5, except for ASM home. Or should I install ASM home before installing DB home? )
    7. Install oracle DB home 10.2.0.1 for ASM and configure ASM
    8. Apply database patchset 6810189 upgrade to 10.2.0.4 for ASM
    9. Apply DB PSU (patch# 8576156) 10.2.0.4.1 (includes CPUJUL2009) to the oracle home for ASM
    10. Run DBCA to create database.
Can I apply DB PSU (patch# 8576156) 10.2.0.4.1 (INCLUDES CPUJUL2009) to DB while the clusterware is 10.2.0.4, as I know DB version should not be higher than clusterware version? Or can I upgrade clusterware to 10.2.0.4.1?
    Thanks for advice,

    Hi,
Applying PSU (10.2.0.4.1) does not mean that you are moving to higher version of Oracle. Oracle releases will be like 10.2.0.4 , 10.2.0.5 like that.
10.2.0.4.1 is the PSU version for Jul 2009 PSU.
10.2.0.4.2 is the PSU version for Oct 2009 PST.
Like CPUs PSUs are also quarterly. It is not necessary oracle should release the PSU/CPU for every oracle home/CRS home every quarter.
For now, the PSU (Patch no: 8576156) is only applicable as shown below.
PSU 10.2.0.4.1 includes the following previously released bundle patches:
    - Generic Recommended Bundle #4 (Patch 8362683)
    - RAC Recommended Bundle #3 (Patch 8344348)
    - Data Guard Broker Recommended Bundle #1 (Patch 7936793)
    - Data Guard Physical/Recovery Recommended Bundle #1 (Patch 7936993)
    - Data Guard Logical Recommended Bundle #1 (Patch 7937113)
Refer to the installation types of this patch (download README of this patch bundle).
Table 1 Installation Types and Security Content
    Server homes - PSU 10.2.0.4.1
    Client-Only Installations - None
    Instant Client Installations - None
(The Instant Client installation is not the same as the client-only Installation.
For additional information about Instant Client installations, see Oracle Database Concepts.)
ASM (Automatic Storage - PSU 10.2.0.4.1
    Management) homes
CRS (Cluster Ready Services) - None
    homes
So, there is no PSU patch for this quarter for CRS Home. You may check the previous CPU/PSUs to make your home secured/updated with all patches.

  • Oracle 10g RAC design with ASM and OCFS

    Hi all,
I have a question about a proposed Oracle 10g Release 2 RAC design for a 2 node cluster.
ASM can store database files but not Oracle binaries nor OCR and voting disk. As such, OCFS version 1 does not support a shared Oracle Home. We plan to use OCFS version 2 with ASM version 2 on Red Hat Linux Enteprrise Server 4 with Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1).
For OCFS v2, a shared Oracle home and shared OCR and voting disk are supported. My question is does the following proposed architecture make sense for OCFS v2 with ASM v2 on Red Hat Linux 4?
Oracle 10g Release 2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 4:
    OCFS V2:
    - shared Oracle home and binaries
    - shared OCR and vdisk files
    - CRS software shared OCFS v2 filesystem
    - spfile
    - controlfiles
    - tnsnames.ora
    ASM v2 with ASMLib v2:
    Proposed ASM disk groups:
    - data_dg for application data
    - backupdg for flashback and archivelogs
    - undo_rac1dg ASM diskgroup for undo tablespace for racnode1
    - undo_rac2dg ASM diskgroup for undo tablespace for racnode2
    - redo_rac1dg ASM diskgroup to hold redo logs for racnode1
    - redo_rac2dg ASM diskgroup to hold redo logs for racnode2
    - temp1dg temp tablespace for racnode1
    - temp2dg temp tablespace for racnode2
Does this sound like a good initial design?
    Ben Prusinski, Senior DBA

    OK Tim, thanks for advices.
I think Netbackup can be integrated with RMAN but I don't want to loose time on this (political).
    To summarize:
ORACLE_HOME and CRS_HOME on each node (RAID1 and NTFS)
    Shared storage:
    Disk1 and disk 2: RAID1: - Raw partition 1 for OCR
    - Raw partition 2 for VotingDisk
    - OCFS for FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA
Disk3, disk4 and disk5: RAID 0 - Raw with ASM redundancy normal 1 diskgroup for database files.
This is a running project here, will start testing the design on VMware and then go for production setup.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC setup with ASM option running on two nodes . Seeking help

    Hi ,
Recently we have migrated to 11gR2 extended RAC for one of our application using ASM . Its a two node RAC setup . We are using ASM Normal redundancy feature maintaining two failure group .
I need few clarification regarding our new DR set up .
We are planning to have EMC SRDF replication from any of node storage ( Either 1 or 2) to the DR disks .
Its stright to use when we use the normal file systems . In case of ASM , I am not sure how this replication will work ? and on which level the replication should happen ?
Do i need an ASM instance up and running on DR server , Which will recognize the disks as it is once DR disks are separated from prod replication and assigned to the server ?
What should be prerequisite on DR server before we can start the srdf replication (EMC) and make it work .
Thanks for All your Valuble suggestion .

Before you decide to use EMC replication give considerable thought to the fact that you are introducing a single point of failure.
Hardware snapshot replication is very fast. That is all it is. If you database crashes because of corruption on disk ... your replica will be equally corrupt.
What is fast can not do what DataGuard does ... verify quality. If the point is DR. Go with DataGuard unless EMC is willing to, in writing (not verbally) give you a guarantee (in hard cash) to cover all costs if they replicate bad blocks and it causes an outage.
And just so no one thinks I'm picking o EMC ... the same weakness exists with all of the other storage vendor's products.

  • Database migration from non rac and non asm to RAC database with ASM

    HI,
i have requirement to import one database ( db1) which running one node with out ASM and with out RAC , now i want to import that database with rman backup to another database ( db2) which running on different server with 3 node RAC and ASM ( disk group +DATA ) , can you please provide me the steps how i can migrate.? ( i have created db2 with dbca with RAC).
    regards,

    Sri,
This could be done multiple ways. Simplest for you is to use DBCA:

  • RAC 10gr2 using ASM for RMAN a cluster file system or a Local directory

The environment is composed of a RAC with 2 nodes using ASM. I have to determine what design is better for Backup and Recovery with RMAN. The backups are going to be saved to disk only. The database is only transactional and small in size
I am not sure how to create a cluster file system or if it is better to use a local directory. What's the benefit of having a recovery catalog that is optional to the database?
I very much appreciate your advice and recommendation, Terry

    Arf,
I am new to RAC. I analyzed Alejandro's script. He is main connection is to the first instance; then through sql*plus, he gets connected to the second instance. he exits the second instance and starts with RMAN backup to the database . Therefore the backup to the database is done from the first instance.
I do not see where he setenv again to change to the second instance to run RMAN to backup the second instance. It looks to me that the backup is only done to the first instance, but not to the second instance. I may be wrong, but I do not see the second instance backup.
Kindly, I request your assistance on the steps/connection to backup the second instance. Thank you so much!! Terry

  • RAC DB and ASM SYS user passwords

    Hi,
We are planning to change SYS user password of our RAC instances SYS user password. But one of my colleague is saying that if we change the DB password we need to change the ASM password too and ASM instances password should match the DB password i.e. the DB new password should be same as ASM new password.
Is it true that we need to change the ASM password too if we change the DB same password ? and does ASM password need to be same as DB password?
    Thanks,
    Mahipal Reddy

    Hi,
Not true. You can have different paasswords for sys and asm. ASM has a different password file and db instance has a different password file. You can change one without changing the other and they both don't have to be the same.

  • Rac installtion with ASM

Pls tell me how many listeners do you have in RAC with ASM?
Do we need to have listener at ASM home level and listernr at RDBMS home level?
is it mandatory to run the naming conventions for both listeners?

I have installed CRS and asm and I have to migrate 2 databases from different host to this newly installed CRS & ASM node. Why have you installed CRS? Is this a RAC server? Have you created 2 RAC databases and instances when you migrated the 2 databases?
I have installed one rdbms home and have listener at the rdbms home level and I migrated the data from another node in to this databaase from non-asm to asm. Is it mandatory that ASM should come up automatically after issuing CRSCTL start crs or CRS_START commands.?On 11g yes. On 10g, no.
On 11g, ASM is part of the CRS s/w stack. With 10g it is not. With 11g, ASM can also serve as storage manager of the cluster's OCR and voting disks. It's no longer needed (as with 10g) to use raw volumes/LUNs or a cluster file system like OCFS for these disks/files required by CRS. Much simpler and easier having it managed by ASM. As CRS needs to have these 2 disks at startup, it needs to startup ASM to provide the storage interface to OCR and voting disks.
On 10g, ASM is by default added as a service to CRS and enabled for autostart (as part of the ASM installation/setup process).
The command on 10g is srvctl to start ASM (it is not started via the crsctl command). So if you want to enable ASM for autostart:
    srvctl enable asm -n <hostname-of-node>
If you want to manually start it:
    srvctl start asm -n <hostname-of-node>
In my setup ASM is not comming up automatically.Perhaps it has been disabled via srvctl ?

  • Cloning a RAC environment using ASM to a single node.

    Hi partners,
I would like to know if, there is any procedure to clone a RAC environment with Ebusiness Suite using ASM, OMF and raw devices to a single node database?
I know, it can reached using Rapid Clone, but I would like to know, what are the needed steps to clone the database which is using ASM and raw devices, I am thinking to recrate manually the controlfiles.
Also, I think that I will need to clone firstable the ASM instance, and then try to clone the database.
I have looking at Metalink, but I haven't found any Note about that.
Any advice or help will be really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to migrate data from oracle 9i database to new machine 11gr2 RAC ASM

    Hi Expert
I need your expertise to advise me what is the best method to move data from oracle 9i database to new machine running oracle 11r2 RAC database with ASM.
Currently my production server running on HPUX ORACLE 9I database with normal file system. My new server is running SUN SOLARIS SPACR 64 bit ORACLE 11gr2 RAC with ASM. What is best method to move data over so it will be consistent. Any guide can refer.
    Regard
    William

    Hi William,
See the note in metalink Migration of Oracle Database Instances Across OS Platforms [ID 733205.1] to saw the Endian Format of your OS. If is the same you can use the RMAN to convert the database to another OS, if not the only option is using export/import (Transportable Tablespaces).
To upgrade from 9i to 11g, see the note 837570.1 - Complete Checklist for Manual Upgrades to 11gR2.
To migrate your FS to ASM the only way is using RMAN, so see the note - How to move a datafile from a file system to ASM [ID 390274.1].
    Hope this help you.
