RAC DB and ASM SYS user passwords

Hi,
We are planning to change SYS user password of our RAC instances SYS user password. But one of my colleague is saying that if we change the DB password we need to change the ASM password too and ASM instances password should match the DB password i.e. the DB new password should be same as ASM new password.
Is it true that we need to change the ASM password too if we change the DB same password ? and does ASM password need to be same as DB password?
Thanks,
Mahipal Reddy

Hi,
Not true. You can have different paasswords for sys and asm. ASM has a different password file and db instance has a different password file. You can change one without changing the other and they both don't have to be the same.

    Nope!
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html  Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • Updating SYS.USER password field across databases

    Hello -
I am trying to update the password field across four SYS.USER tables in four different databases. All databases have the same host name/IP address, but each has a distinct service_name and password.
A web application updates the inital USER table (password field). But three other databases are connected to the website in question and the USER table for each must match up with the initial USER table that has been updated.
Is a trigger best, or a stored procedure, or replication, or other? Or is there a way to link tables? How do I include the connection info (service name and db password) in the code that updates the table in a given database?
I hope that I am simply making this more complicated than it needs to be. Either way, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Ann

    yep,
I faced this behavior too, and the only way to fix it, is forcing the user to re-type the password.

  • Forgotten Sys and System user passwords

In the case of forgetting the Sys and the System user passwords, is there anyway of logging on with privilages to be able to change these passwords, if not, are there any other solutions?
    Thanks,
    Nick

In order for "/ as sysdba" to work, you need to run
the password file creation utility (orapwd).
No, it has nothing to do with the password file. In order for "connect / as sysdba" to succeed, it is necessary to have an operating system account which is a member of the "osdba group". In Windows, this OS group is : "ORA_DBA". Any member of this group can and has privileges to connect "/ as sysdba". Again, it has nothing to do with password file.
In Windows there is another condition for it to work :
The file %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin\sqlnet.ora must have the following line :
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
In Unix systems, the osdba group is configured at installation and is conventionally named "dba".

  • Input user password with AR?

    Hi,
I've read http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrfaq.html and other sources regarding commenting PDFs with the Acrobat Reader.
There are tools out there to encrypt a pdf-file and set a user password. If I do this the document security shows, that it is possible to add comments to the document (with the user password).
But how do I enter the user password with AR? If a master password is set, a popup windows appears after opening the document, but what is the user password good for?
There is a plugin in my AR9.0 which is for commenting PDFs.
    greetings from germany
    Stefan K.

    Hi,
    thanks Bernd,
"There are a permission password and a open password."
    ok
"Owners of the open password can open the PDF document."
    ok
"Owners of the permission password can change the security settings."
    ok, but
    - changing the permissions requires Adobe Acrobat, right? not the AReader?
    - why are the document properties different in the document properties screen in AR?
    see: http://users.minet.uni-jena.de/~zsk/pdfs/StundenplanAR813.png
this suggests that the permission password (user password?) is for protecting the document properties, which are listet there - not - for protecting the change of the security settings.
    - why are the document properties(*) different when opening the same document via Adobe Acrobat?
    see: http://users.minet.uni-jena.de/~zsk/pdfs/StundenplanA812std.png
(*) this looks like the so called document properties are not properties of the document but properties of the adobe appl. I use to open it.
    this is all really confusing.
Here is my questiong again: Is it possible to add comments to a document via AR if it has a user password? -> (why does the document security window in StundenplanAR813.png show a Commenting: Allowed?? and why does a Addon in AR exisist that is called Comments??)
    greetings
    Stefan K.

  • Portal user password reset!

    Ankur,
Its very much possible to have an automatted job which will read a text file from a portal content path and reset the user password. You can implement KM Scheduler task using NWDS.
Let your KM Scheduler task have the logic to read a file. Use UME API to reset the password for the given user.
Deploy this KM Scheduler task into portal from NWDS using portal admin user name and password.
Navigate to portal and schedule the deployed task under System admin -> System config -> Knowledge management -> content Management -> Global services -> Scheduler tasks ->  Schedulers -> You should be able to see your deployed scheduler here -> just select the link and set the time period -> by this way you can run a job at any time like everyday at 11A.M , every one hour, ever 10 minutes etc.
I remember thr is blog on SDN reg the scheduler. Please search in SDN.

  • How do you reset a user password without an administrator password?

How do you login to Root and change a user password? The user has only one account, his, and that is the only admin account.

Are you saying he has lost his administrator status for his account? How did these accounts get there without one admin account?
Restore Admin Status to User Account - Snow Leopard
Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD to enable the root user:
After the installer loads select your language then click on the Continue button. When the menubar appears choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu. Select the account to reset password, choose System Administrator (root). Enter a password and verify it. Save the password, then exit the installer and restart.
At the login window, or if you have it set to auto-login then log out to return to the login window, choose Other... and enter root (all lowercase) as the name, then the password that you set. As root you will have full access to the system including granting admin rights to the accounts that are standard at the moment. You also will see some additional folders on the hard drive you couldn't see before. Do not touch these in any way or you could hurt the OS. Access System Preferences->Accounts, select one of the non-admin accounts and check the box next to "Allow user to administer this computer," then log out and into the account to which you just gave admin status.
To disable root go into Accounts preferences from the admin account, click Login Options at the bottom of the list of accounts. Click the Join button next to the words Network Account Server..., click Open Directory Utility, click on the lock icon and authenticate to make changes. Under the Edit menu, choose Disable Root user.
Consult this Apple support article if you get lost.
I did not write the above as it was provided by another user.

  • ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied FOR SYS USER

    Hello,
I was usually login through the same password for sys user to log on to the database as sysdba, but last time i used " / as sysdba" to connect using local system administrative account which is connected very well and still connecting in the same way. The initializing parameter file set with the following parameter:
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
Now if i use to connect the database server remotely using sys user, it gives me "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied" error and if i use the same login credentials on DB server machine using other local user accounts it is giving me "Insufficient Privilige" error. I can only connect now using local administrator account from DB server machine using " / as sysdba" statement.
    Kindly guide me the issue.

When you use " / as sysdba" locally on server, you are using OS authentication which will bypass the password file and user/pass authentication.
Looks like you have discrepancy between the password you use and real password. You can login " / as sysdba" and change your SYS password to a new one.
When was last time you successfully login using password? What has changed since then?

  • Connect DB - SYS user with wrong password

    Hi All,
A strange thing I have noticed with SYS user since Oracle 9i(never worked on earlier versions) is that I can connect to the SYS user as SYSDBA with wrong password as well! Please guide how to prevent this...
(I have searched for a solution online but was unable to find any :( )
    SQL> CONN SYS/AAA@TEST AS SYSDBA
    Connected.
    SQL> DISC
Disconnected from Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP, Data Mining and Real Application Testing options
    SQL> CONN SYS/BBB@TEST AS SYSDBA
    Connected.
    SQL>
    SQL> DISC
Disconnected from Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production*009*

There is nothing wrong and nothing should be, IMO, prevented.
When you log in to the server as an user in the dba group (Unix) or the ora_dba group (Windows), you are a power user and O/S authentication applies to you, and you don't need a password.
Logging in as owner of the software (oracle) all the time, what many DBAs do, is a bad idea anyway, as you can remove anyufile on O/S level.
    Strategies to prevent this:
    - make sure your account isn't in the groups I mentioned
    or
    - disable O/S authentication by editiing sqlnet.ora
    Both procedures are documented.
Finally please note anyone who has root access can get around this easily.

  • How to change password of sys user connected as sysdba?

How to change password of sys user connected as sysdba?
I have connected with user name sys as sysdba in oracle 9i with password oracle.
I want to change the password . I typed password and pressed entered. It asks me to type old password, then new password and retype the new password. When I press enter it gives error message "ERROR:
    ORA-28008: invalid old password"
    Password unchanged.
does anyone know about this...? how to change the password..?

You may be using operating system authentication to log in as sys with sysdba privileges.
By using password utility, you can change the password of sys user (which is in database) which is "change_on_install" when you create a database.
    You can change this password.
