11g client connection to XE fails

Hi,
I have installed the 11g client beta and Oracle XE on the same system running Vista Ultimate.
The 11g client can connect to Oracle 9i running on remote systems.
The XE sqlplus can connect to the local XE instance (and remote Oracle instance).
When I try to connect my application to the XE instance I get an exception:
Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException: ORA-12532: TNS:invalid argument
In sqlnet.log I get:
Fatal NI connect error 12532, connecting to:
(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=now2)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=XE)(CID=(PROGRAM=C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\InstallUtil.exe)(HOST=NOW2)(USER=nisse))))
VERSION INFORMATION:
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.1.0.4.0 - Beta
Windows NT TCP/IP NT Protocol Adapter for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.1.0.4.0 - Beta
Time: 28-AUG-2007 10:54:48
Tracing not turned on.
Tns error struct:
ns main err code: 12532
TNS-12532: Message 12532 not found; No message file for product=NETWORK, facility=TNS
ns secondary err code: 12560
nt main err code: 502
TNS-00502: Message 502 not found; No message file for product=NETWORK, facility=TNS
nt secondary err code: 51
nt OS err code: 0
The connecting string I use is: "Data Source=(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = now2 ) (PORT = 1521)) )(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER=DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = XE )));Max Pool Size=16;Connection Timeout=15;User Id=nisse;Password=XXX"
When I change HOST and SERVICE_NAME it works perfectly well to connect to a remote Oracle instance.
Disabling the local firewall does not help.
In the PATH, the 11g client path comes before the XE path. (No ORACLE_HOME set)
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Strange. I have 10g XE with the 11g ODAC beta, but I can connect using localhost as my TNS host name. Another solution may be using the IP address for localhost: 127.0.0.1
One thing to keep in mind is that SQLPlus comes with 10gXE, not 11g ODAC beta. So, the version of SQLPlus you are using is really from the 10g Home.
Ming Man,
It sounds like you need to copy over a tnsnames.ora file to your new ODP.NET 11g Home or some other general Oracle connectivity configuration not set.

  • Can 11g client connect to 10g server?

    I am very new to Oracle, so hope this isn't too basic of a question. I thought I saw something through my searches where the clients were backward compatible to older versions of the server. Will this work, 11g client connecting to a 10g server?
    I have a custom windows app that uses the Oracle client to pull data from an Oracle server at another location and pushed the data into a MS-SQLExpress database for a local cache to be used during th day. I do not have the source for this custom app or the time to re-create this custom app. We just installed a new Windows 2008 R2 (64bit) server and I just need to get the client back on the new server so the custom app will work again. The old server was running 8.1.7 client, but going to 64bit OS I want to use a more current client to avoid issues with 32bit/64bit compatibility problems.
    I am downloading the 11g 64bit client now, but want to make sure I'm not wasting my time and need to get a different client. Please advise.
    Thanks!

    In general, yes, you can use a later version of the client to connect to an earlier version of the database and vice versa. But that only generally works for a few major releases. Unfortunately "10g" and "11g" are somewhat ambiguous-- both could be referring to one of two major releases.
    Metalink 207303.1 is the client/server interoperability matrix. If by 11g you mean 11.2 and by 10g you mean 10.1, the 11.2 client will not work with a 10.1 database. If the client is 11.2 and the database is 10.2, it should be at least 10.2.0.2. If the client is 11.1, the database should be 10.1.0.5 or 10.2.0.2 or higher.

  • ARD client connection to pc fails

    The PC Admin at work set up both the home MacBook Pro 10.5.8 and the networked work PC. Firing up the Mac at home gives:  The Mac cannot connect because the Windows-based computer cannot be found. Verify that you typed the correct computer name or IP address, and try connecting again.
    I have checked the network VPN settings and need some help. Thanks folks

    Then you're in the wrong forum. This one is for questions about Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Macintosh systems. Since this question is about a Microsoft product, you might have more luck getting suggestions if you ask in Microsoft's own forums.

    Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle
    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 11g client to connect Oracle 8 database using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle but I am getting error when after entered the password
    Run-time error '40002':
    IM006: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed
    I am using VB6 application on Windows 7 and I created DSN using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle but I got the above error when I try to connect to Database.
    Please help me out on this that why this error is coming
    Thanks
    Amit Panwar

    Provided its a 32-bit application, possibly. Microsoft ODBC for Oracle is discontinued and has no 64-bit version, so a 64-bit application won't be able to use it at all.
    I do see it listed as a 32-bit ODBC driver on my Windows 7. The problem is that I think it relies on having an Oracle client installed on the machine, and you've got the same problem of Oracle client 11 not working with 8 server. You could try it and see if it works I suppose, or try installing an older client and see if that makes it work.
    If it's just for testing purposes though you could throw up an Oracle XE server and test against that.

    Hi Jason
    I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
    the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
    I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
    Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

  • Thin Client connection not failing over

    I'm using the following thin client connection and the sessions do not failover. Test with SQLPLUS and the sessions do fail over. One difference I see between the two different connections is the thin connection has NONE for the failover_method and failover_type but the SQLPLUS connection show BASIC for failover_method and SELECT for failover_type.
    Is there any issues with the thin client the version is 10.2.0.3
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(description=(address_list=(load_balance=YES)(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=crpu306-vip.wm.com)(port=1521))(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=crpu307-vip.wm.com)(port=1521)))(connect_data=(service_name=ocsqat02)(failover_mode=(type=select)(method=basic)(DELAY=5)(RETRIES=180))))

    You have to use (FAILOVER=on) as well on jdbc url.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/network.102/b14212/advcfg.htm#sthref1292
    Example: TAF with Connect-Time Failover and Client Load Balancing
    Implement TAF with connect-time failover and client load balancing for multiple addresses. In the following example, Oracle Net connects randomly to one of the protocol addresses on sales1-server or sales2-server. If the instance fails after the connection, the TAF application fails over to the other node's listener, reserving any SELECT statements in progress.sales.us.acme.com=
    (DESCRIPTION=
    *(LOAD_BALANCE=on)*
    *(FAILOVER=on)*
    (ADDRESS=
    (PROTOCOL=tcp)
    (HOST=sales1-server)
    (PORT=1521))
    (ADDRESS=
    (PROTOCOL=tcp)
    (HOST=sales2-server)
    (PORT=1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA=
    (SERVICE_NAME=sales.us.acme.com)
    *(FAILOVER_MODE=*
    *(TYPE=select)*
    *(METHOD=basic))))*
    Example: TAF Retrying a Connection
    TAF also provides the ability to automatically retry connecting if the first connection attempt fails with the RETRIES and DELAY parameters. In the following example, Oracle Net tries to reconnect to the listener on sales1-server. If the failover connection fails, Oracle Net waits 15 seconds before trying to reconnect again. Oracle Net attempts to reconnect up to 20 times.sales.us.acme.com=
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS=
    (PROTOCOL=tcp)
    (HOST=sales1-server)
    (PORT=1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA=
    (SERVICE_NAME=sales.us.acme.com)
    *(FAILOVER_MODE=*
    *(TYPE=select)*
    *(METHOD=basic)*
    *(RETRIES=20)*
    *(DELAY=15))))*

    Hi Poonam!
    Got to dig in the past a bit, I remember Users being able to create SLD object have to have certain permissions set in the J2EE UME. Simple Admin rights do not suffer, if I recall right.
    Unfortunately I cannot go further in detail because this issue has been solved by a long gone collegue of mine.
    Good luck anyway!

  • What should be done when client.connect() failed?

    Hi guys,
    I am using JCO to connect backend System. If client.connect() is called and for certain reason failed, what should I do to roll back the action so that the system keeps normal. I think client.disconnect is not the solution, because connect is not successful. I encountered this problem, and my portal is totally down, what should I do to avoid this situaltion?
    My code is
    try{
              client.connect();
    catch (JCO.Exception e){
    //WHAT SHOULD BE DONE HERE?
         System.exit(1);
    Thanks in advance!

    class JCOConnector {
    private JCO.Client mConnection = null;
      // loginParams will settings for connection
      public static boolean connect(Properties loginParams) {
      boolean returnCode = false;
              try {
                   mConnection = JCO.createClient(loginParams);
                   long timeBeforeConnecting = System.currentTimeMillis();
                   mConnection.connect();
                   long timeAfterConnection = System.currentTimeMillis();
                   returnCode = true;
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   try {
                        disconnect();
                   } catch (Exception e2) {
                   throw new RuntimeException(e);
              return returnCode;
          * To Disconnect from the middleware.
         public static boolean disconnect() {
              boolean returnCode = false;
              if (mConnection != null) { // if connection exists
                   try {
                        mConnection.disconnect();     // disconnect from the middleware
                        returnCode = true;

  • Cannot connect to 10g instance from 11g client (ORA-12638)

    Hi,
    I don't know why I have problems when I connect from a 11g client to a 10g server. I get the error ORA-12638.
    However, it works fine doing the same with a 10g client.
    Can anybody tell me how to avoid this problem without having to install the 10g client ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

    Hi, user7409638,
    To understand the problem, I advice you to enable tracing and have a look at it.
    As you may know, ORA-12638 is the problem with the authentication service.
    It was just unable to get your credentials.
    If you want me finally get the solution, please report it at my system http://1dayotn.blogspot.de/p/question-me_7.html
    If you have any questions, ask.
