11g on VMWare

I understand that Oracle server is not supported on VMWare but this is just a test install and I am facing two major issues which I never faced in 10g under same environment. I have installed 11g RAC on a two node SLES 10 sp1 virtual machine. I am faced with two issues:
a) After reboot, the CRS doesn't start. It does not even start if I issue init.crs start command. After lot of experimentation, I found that after issuing init.crs start, the CRS cannot find the voting disk. However, if I rerun the root.sh script, the CRS starts up immediately. By itself the root.sh doesn't startup the CRS. I have to run it after running init.crs start. What does root.sh do to make CRS recognize the voting disk? Why init.crs cannot do the same? The disk permissions etc. are correct.
b) The virtual machines do not stay up for more than 30-45 minutes. They crash without any entry in CRS logs about node eviction. Is there a way to relax the timings so that even with missed heartbeats, the CRS would wait longer before evicting a node?
If someone has any insight, I would greatly appreciate. I had earlier tested the same setup with 10g RAC and did not face these issues.
Thanks

Both VMs are on same host. The host is XP Pro. The NICs in VM are whatever VMWare installs. There is no way to make it GB NIC. The physical NIC on host server is actually a wireless card and all setups have worked fine with this. I will try changing it to the wired ethernet adapter which is GB.
The clusterware by itself is stable. Even ASM is stable. The DB server software only install also works stable. Once I create the database, then the VMs start crashing. This is why I think it is a timeout issue. I have tried relaxing the limits on disk ping timeout but it doesn't seem to help. I cannot find anything in the CRS logs if there is a node eviction. I need to look more. Maybe there is something in syslog.
The reason I find RAC harder on Linux is that you have to setup user equivalence, kernel limits, required OS libraries, xhost, raw devices, raw device permissions. In Windows, once Oracle user account is setup with local administrator permissions on both nodes, all these things are set automatically. There is no need to check for so many libraries. Everything is installed by default by OS.
Changing network settings in Linux is another challenge. In Windows, renaming a network interface name is easy as right click, rename. In SUSE Linux, I had to go through hoops to rename the adapter from eth3 to eth0. With kernel 2.6, udev has made things more complicated.
In Linux, all configuration settings for every installed program and OS itself are scattered across hundreds of text files all over the place. Most of these files are ill documented. Then there are so many distros of Linux, making it very difficult to remember where these files are in each distro.
Initially I also used to think that RAC/Oracle were easier to install on Linux. However, ever since I started with Windows, I find that things are far easier. Anyways, it is more of personal preference.

  • 11g on VMWare Not Starting Service, ORA-12560 etc.

It's obvious that my Listener is up and running but that the Oracle Service never got started. I'm using a VMware instance of Win2003 Server with Oracle 11g on it.
I'm having very similar issues to the person that wrote this:
    http://www.dbasupport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50051
ORA-12560 at service startup *** ( protocol adapter error )
I'm working on a VMware instance, and I'm not trying to connect from another machine, so I don't think I'll need a 'tnsnames.ora'.
    I did review my listener.ora and sqlnet.ora
and I did adjust my hosts file (on this Win2003 Server, vmware instance), adding an entry to resolve local host and also the FQ machine name to 127.0.0.1
This I was unsure about since when I ping the FQ machine name (property of My Computer) I get a unique ip address.
There's also the VMware issues of what Ethernet connection setting to use: Bridged, NAT or Host Only.
I've tried to look at logs and config files: connection, startup, trace log, etc.
Set tracing on and saw some errors in the trace, but not sure about how to go about debugging those.
It's apparent that I'll need to start the Database with oradim or a version specific command, oradimxx but I wasn't sure what to use for my -pfile parameter, or how to create orainit.ora or configure that file.
One last thing: Previously my program group for 11g had 'Enterprise Manager' which brought up the webpage and showed that the database was up, uptime and other stats. Now that menu link has disappeared.
Any suggestions on all of these issues ? TIA.

Yeah , of course Oracle offers his own hypervisor... that's one very powerful reason.
Please provide us with proper references to support your statements, we all will appreciate that.

I've found the answer on Metalink Note 249212.1, which basically says that Oracle doesn't certifies any product on any VMWare virtualization products, however Oracle will support the product isolating the relationship among operating system and the Oracle product, to known issues or not known issues BUT not related to the existence of an hypervisor layer (VMWare in this case, and distinct of Oracle VM).
In other words, if you have an issue where a certified OS+Oracle product is running over a VMWare product, you'll be lucky if the error is replicated without the VMWare product, otherwise it will be an issue induced from the hypervisor layer, therefore the hypervisor provider must solve.
Anybody interested will follow similar proceedings with another VM products like Virtuozzo (Note 412431.1), Xen (Note 417770.1), this clearly shows a commercial strategy...not technical barriers.

    Dear All,
Our customer requirement is of high availability and good utilization of hardware for EBS R12.13 implementation. As per our strategy we want to use Oracle VM(I think it doesn't require any licensing) , RAC 11gR2 and appstier load balancing. We have only two servers to achieve all these. One one node there will be two VMs one for dbtier and another one for appstier and same will be on second server. So this way we will be having four virtual machines on two physical nodes. For all these we will use OEL Linux as Operating system
Please share your experiences , if above deployment model is correct or need further enhancements.

I increased the memory to 8GB, more than sufficient I guess. The problem is still there.
I think the problem may be around some of the options I picked when installing.
I picked the Sun JDK instead of the JRockit one.
I picked development mode instead of production.
Do you have this version of OIM running under vmware? If so what is the config?

  • Install Oracle 11G, RAC with VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE on one server?

    Dear Experts,
I'm looking to upgrade my skills, and want to learn more of:
Oracle 11G, RAC, VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE
My server has two quad cores (8 CPU altogether) and 16 gigs of RAM.
Years ago, I took a shots at installing RAC on multiple servers and firewire.
One thing I remember was that after I installed RAC, I was not able to use the database unless I enabled all the RAC processes on the server. So, I was not able to just boot the database and use it in the traditional single server manner.
Which I will also want to do.
    1) Does this symptom/aspect/characteristic of RAC install still exist?
    2) Is it realistic to install all this software on one server?
If so, what is the order of operations for the install?
    3) If I have to prioritize, I'd like to install
Oracle 11G, OBIEE, and APPS R12,
Would installing R12 and OBIEE on the same server present any conflicts or issues?
If not, what is the order of operations for the install?
    11G, R12, then OBIEE?
    Thanks a lot!

If not, what is the order of operations for the install?
11G, R12, then OBIEE?There will not be any conflicts. I would suggest you to select vmware or virtual box in order to configure all these sw's.
I have done such a configuration on my laptop with i7 Quad processor, 16GB RAM and 640 GB HDD.
I have Installed 2 node RAC, 2 Node ERP and all are running smoothly without any issues.

  • Installation of Oracle Database 11g R2 Grid is failing

    Hi Guys,
I've been trying to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g R2 (11.2.0.2) for a long time, but, failing every time. This is what I've tried so far:
    Things being used:
    OS: Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.2
VM Software: VMware Workstation 7.1 and VMware Server 2
    Oracle SW: Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g R2 - 11.2.0.2
    VMs: Three RAC nodes - rac1, rac2, rac3
I've tried to follow the link given below to on both VMware Server and VMware Workstation all goes well until it asks us to run two scripts as root.
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVMwareServer2.php
The script "/u01/app/grid/11.2.0/root.sh" completes successfully on the first node, rac1, however, it fails on the rest of them with the following error:
CRS-4402: The CSS daemon was started in exclusive mode but found an active CSS daemon on node rac1, number 1, and is terminating
An active cluster was found during exclusive startup, restarting to join the cluster
    Start of resource "ora.crsd" failed
CRS-2800: Cannot start resource 'ora.asm' as it is already in the INTERMEDIATE state on server 'rac2'
CRS-4000: Command Start failed, or completed with errors.

Instead of using shared disk as "independent-persistent" disks I've also used openfiler 2.99 to allocate storage by following below given link. With that the issue was that the iSCSI disks were not persistent and no solution worked to fix that.
    http://www.jobacle.nl/?p=957
I also tried to use OCFS2 for OCR and VOTING disks, the installation completes successfully, however, the asm instance, registry, and few other services doesn't start. When I tried to reboot all the machines not a single oracle service came up. The crs just died because of OCR and VOTING disks.
I've tried so many things but nothing works.
My last installation was as follows:
    ==============================
    VM: rac1, rac2, rac3
    Config of each VM:
    Memory: 4GB
    Processors: 4
    HDD (SCSI): 25GB

    Pre-requisites completed.
    ASM Disks labeled.
    runcluvfy succeeds for all nodes
All nodes can see and write to the ASM disks.During the installation of GI 11.2.0.2 at prerequisites test got one error:
PRVF-5449 : Check of Voting Disk location "ORCL:(ORCL:)" failed
However, according to Metalink, note ID 1267569.1, its a bug and its going to be fixed in 11.2.0.3. The note gives a workaround which is the manual testing of the ASM disks from all the nodes and as long it succeeds we can ignore the error. Therefore, I just ignored the error and carried on. When prompted I executed the first script, "/u01/app/oraInventory/orainstRoot.sh ", on all the nodes successfully. The second script, "/u01/app/grid/11.2.0/root.sh" completes successfully on rac1, however, fails on the rest of the nodes.
On rac2 the alertrac2.log contains the following errors:
CRS-5019:All OCR locations are on ASM disk groups [OCRVOT], and none of these disk groups are mounted. Details are at "(:CLSN00100:)" in "/u01/app/grid/11.2.0/log/rac2/agent/ohasd/oraagent_oracle/oraagent_oracle.log".and oraagent_oracle.log contains the following errors:

Still miss those days when Oracle used to release easy to use and easy to install softwares, but now thats not the case. Grid Infrastructure, Grid Control, and other similar technologies have become so complicated and difficult for us to install on VMs and play with them.

    Updates:
Metalink doc, Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 Installation or Upgrade may fail due to Multicasting Requirement [ID 1212703.1], shows similar errors that I've in my log files. Therefore, I thought Multicast could be the culprit. Nonetheless:

  • OBIEE 11g in Microsoft Hyper-v

    Hi everyone
1.- Oracle support Obiee 11g on Microsoft Hyper-V?
2.- Oracle support Obiee 11g on VMware?
    Please help me.
    thanks
    Regards
    Pedro

Just to backup what Brian is saying and to question xploda's advice.  Hyper-V can easily run more virtual CPUs (total number of CPUs assigned to VMs) than are physically available on the host.  That's one of the primary reasons behind virtualization
    - get better utilization of your physical resources.  The host does not reserve any CPU for itself, and you can't reserve specific CPUs for specific VMs.  The hypervisor takes care of scheduling the CPU and memory across all processes needing access
to them.  To say that Hyper-V won't be effective with two 4-cpu VMs on an eight-CPU host is questionable.  That would be making the assumption that every single CPU is 100% utilized, which rarely, if ever, happens.  People love virtualization
because it enables them to take servers that were only using part of the available CPU resources and consolidate them with other servers not fully utilizing their CPU resources.  Add them together on another machine to get better overall utilization.

  • APEX 3.1.2 upgrade issue!!!

    Hi,
Interesting I just installed 11g (on Vmware) and updated APEX to 3.1.2. The script log seems without errors and the

    shows VALID.
BUT, I can't even login as admin on .../apex/apex_admin!!!
And I don't know why, I just followed the install doc from the APEX to 3.1.2 documentation, do anyone have a clue why or what I should do?

  • Oracle DB performance on VM-Ware

    Hi
I've installed Oracle-11g on VMWare-1.0.9(which is installed on Windows-2003server). I've added 500GB Hard drive for this VMware.
In the beginning every thing was working fine and performance is also good but suddenly I don't know what was happend the performance of oracle is
degraded considerably. Even sometimes I'm not able to connect to oracle DB.
I'm running an application which connects to Oracle DB which is now giving time out exception.Even simple Select statement like 'Select * from emp'
is also taking lot of time to execute.
What could be the reasons for this performance degradation?
Valid Indexes and statistics are created on the tables in my DB.
    regards,
    harry

Oracle has never and does not now support installation on VMWare so from that standpoint you have made a reasonably poor decision and you are on your own.
Just a week ago I was at UKOUG and watched James Morley (Oak Table Network co-founder) present a session
    http://www.morganslibrary.org/pres/ukoug09/virtual_insanity.jpg
I don't think I have ever agreed with a session title more.
Unless you have an Exadata or an IBM z10 I'd recommend dumping the virtualization or, if you've no other choice, going to OracleVM because at least then you can open an SR and complain about the fact that your hardware is likely insufficient for what you are trying to do and they are paid to be sympathetic. And with Windows on less ... the word on top of bad.
What I am trying to say is that once you go into a virtualized world the ability to deal with such matters becomes much harder and, in my opinion, not worth the couple thousand dollars it would have cost to just buy another server.

  • Fedora

    Hello everybody.
Im a developer and I work with Oracle Database 10R2 ,Forms & Reports DevSuite, and Apex and Red Hat Linux ES/AS 4 all in one computer installed.
I know that I can install Oracle Database in Fedora, (www.oracle-base.com) but, my question is : Can I install DevSuite and work good ,with Forms & Reports, also in Fedora ?
Thanks in advanced and regards everybody.

On site I write you, there are all step for install db (11g also) on Fedora.
You was talking me about Fedora free,
you thought then to CentOs which is similar to Red-hat(3,4,5) and 100%Free and for and for some things (i.e. upd2date against Yum) better than Red-hat
And belive me, I have some Installation, Oas,
various Db (from 10 to 11g on VmWare on Red-hat and centOs and never had problems)
Anyway, I think if you install 10G Forms/report on fedora or centOs you will not ever problems.

    ./runInstaller: /export/home/oracle/installation/solaris.x64_11gR2_database_1of2_1/database/install/.oui: cannot execute
It will bre great if anyone can help me with some ideas and concepts here.

I have downloaded Oracle 11G R2 version from Windows and extracted it in Windows and copied it into DVD after extraction in two folders. Now I am mounting that DVD in Solaris 10 installed in my VMware . I made a new directory named as 'installation ' under /export/home/oracle and copied the folders from DVD to 'installation' folder. Now I am entering installation folder and try to do ./runInstaller as 'oracle ' user and getting the error mentioned before.

  • Oracle 11g RAC on Windows 2008 R2 VMware EXS 3.5 virtual machines

    Hi,
We are planning to Install Oracle 11g R2 RAC on two VMware EXS 3.5 Windows 2008 R2 servers.
Having trouble while assigning the storage to the servers, the Raw Device Mapping feature in the VMware is greyed out and we cannot assign the disks to the Virtual servers, the disks are allocated to the Vmware Host machine from the SAN (HP EVA).
Please guide me the best approach for the RAC configuration on VMware EXS 3.5 Win 2008 R2 Guest servers.
any help will be highly appreceiated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Is this implementation to production environment?
    Be aware:
Is Oracle RAC on VMware supported? No, we do not support Oracle Software including Oracle RAC on VMWare.
Aside from the support restrictions for the database on VMWare outlined in Metalink Note 249212.1, there are technical restrictions that prevent the certification of Oracle RAC in a VMWare environment.
