1242AG Wireless Access Point - Cannot Get DHCP IP for BVI1 interface - Multiple SSIDs...

Hello,
I am attempting to set up three Cisco 1242AG Wireless Access Points with multiple SSID's. I used the web interface and directions online to set up the two networks I want and at least one of the networks work wirelessly.
However, I have two problems:
The first, which is the most important, is that the "management" interface, BVI1, doesn't get an ip address from our DHCP server. I set the VLAN 60 (which you'll see in the documenation below) to be the native VLAN on the device as well as on the switch that the device is connected to as well as other settings in the configeration file below. Because of this, I can only manage the device via the console port which would be a huge pain once all of the devices are mounted.
The second problem is that I am not sure how to get both wireless networks broadcasting their SSID's. I have to manually type in the SSID for the second wireless network I have which I would prefer I don't have to. Anyway I can enable broadcasting on all of the SSID's?
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Christopher Koeber

I am using a third party DHCP server which is our Windows Domain Controller. I have the ip helper-address set for the native vlan of the Access Point through a layer 3 distribution switch (a Catalyst 4506) that the current switch connects to.
I didn't see any event on the logs for the AP.
Let me know if I need to do something else.
Thanks.

  • Surface Pro 3 with AIR-AP1042N-N-K9 Wireless Access Point

I am trying to connect two recently purchased Microsoft Surface Pro 3 windows 8.1 tablets to a cisco AIR-AP1042N-N-K9 (firmware 15.2(4)JA1) wireless access point. The tablet asks for the wlan password then displays 'can't connect to network'. I am able to connect to the AP using other Win 8.1 devices using WPA2-Personal + TKIP. The Surface Pro 3s connect to other wlans using other access points.
    Please would you help.

Thank you man that *REALLY* worked!

(I suspect it does, as the part number AIR-LAP indicates lightweight while AIR-AP is typically standalone)The best way to confirm is to check the cdp neighbor details for the AP software version (or login to the AP console and issue a "show version").If the software has "k9w7" in the name, that is standalone. If it has "k9w8" then it is lightweight. When operating in lightweight you will not be able to telnet/ssh or go to the AP web page.To convert your AP to standalone, please follow the procedure found here:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918-Patrick CroakWireless TAC

You have basically verified that the issue is NOT with your MBP, but with this particular Wi-Fi network. Even though it may be unsecured, the provider may have elected to configure it for MAC filtering. In this case I am referring to the MAC (Media Access Control) address and not your Mac laptop itself. If this has been enabled, your Mac would only be able to connect if the Mac's MAC address was added to that filter.

  • I can't get my macbook to access shared files on a windows computer when it's connected through a wireless access point.

I recently bought a Netgear Wireless Access Point to use in the office so we can have a wireless network.  I configured the wireless network, and I am currently connected to the internet.  However, I no longer can access the shared files on the Windows computers like I could when I was hardwired in with an ethernet cable.  I've disabled all of the internal firewalls on all of the computers (and there's no firewall built into the WAP), all the computers are on the same workgroup, and I've tried accessing the computer with the shared files directly via the IP address using the instructions found here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8849.html.
My computer sees that the other computers on the network are there.  They show up in the network view from the finder.  However, when I try to connect to them, it tells me the connection failed.  When I click connect as, it says:
    "Connection Failed
"The server “PC-ASSISTANT” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
When I try to connect via the "connect to server" on the finder, I type in "smb://10.0.0.103/Word Processing"  It tells me:
"There was an error connecting to the server “10.0.0.103”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
I have no clue what the problem is. I'm not really an IT person or a networking guru.  Can someone please help?

  • Can WRT54G be setup as a Wireless Access Point?

Does anyone know how to setup a router (WRT54G) to connect to other routers using a wireless connection and function as either a wireless access point or another router using the main router for it's internet and network connection?

you cannot get  the WRT to connect wireless to any device as it is an access point.
However this same thing will work wired. All you need to do is change the LAN ip of the WRT to 192.168.1.50 from 192.168.1.1 and disable the DHCP on the WRT.
Connect both devices LAN to LAN , do not use the internet port of the WRT.

  • Setting up WRVS4400N for switch & wireless access point

Howdy, first post here.  What is the proper way to configure this device to act as a switch and wireless access point so I can connect it to a switch with router upstream?  I have a DLink router that was easy:  disable UPnP, disable DHCP, set an IP/Subnet, and it worked.
My main router has a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0 but in the WRVS4400N setup screen I only get a list box with a limited number of masks, all of which are 255.255.255.x.  Is there any way to specify the 240?

No. You cannot use a subnet mask larger then 255.255.255.0 on Linksys routers. They are only built to handle 255.255.255.0 and smaller. I guess they consider a LAN which requires a larger subnet, i.e. expects to run more then 253 networked devices requires a larger router.
The only thing you can do is to choose 255.255.255.0 and to pick an IP address which matches the IP address from which you expect to do the usual configuration work. If you use 10.0.0.0/255.255.240.0 but the computers which have to configure the router are all in 10.0.1.0/255.255.255.0 you can use that subnet. This works with computers even if they have a different subnet mask.
Of course, you can set any IP address you want, even one completely outside your normal LAN in order to "hide" the web interface from the normal LAN operation. The IP address of the router in your setup is irrelevant for the switching and wireless access. Both operate on ethernet/MAC addresses and the IP address of the router does not play any role there. If you use the 10 subnet mentioned before you could as well leave the router at 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0. Whenever you have to access the web interface of the router you must temporarily set a static IP address inside 192.168.1.* on the computer...

  • Using WRT54GR as a Wireless Access Point only

I have a WRT610N as my main router. I want to use an existing WRT54GR purely as a wireless access point and ethernet switch. Any suggestions on how best to do that so I can still access the WRT54GR to make configuration changes? Right now I have the network functionality working by simply not using the Internet port on the WRT54G but by going to 192.168.1.1 I can only get to the WRT610N.

    (Restarting this thread).
I made the change you suggested and statically assigned 192.168.1.200 to the WRT54GR. I can reliably access it through this IP address. I connected it to the rest of my network by using one of the 4 switch ports (not the Internet port). I disabled DHCP on it and configured the Wireless settings to be the same (same SSID and Security Settings) as my other wireless router.
What I'm finding is that devices in my house won't assoicate with it. I tried changing the SSID to a different value; devices were able to see the new SSID but when I entered the pasword they told me that no DHCP server could be detected. A wired device that I plugged into another of the 4 switch ports on the WRT54GR was able to pick up an IP address from the main router just fine so I know that basic connectivity is OK.
To achieve what I want (i.e. the WRT54GR just acts as a wireless base station to extend wireless coverage in the house), do I need to connect the WRT54GR to the rest of the network using the Internet port rather than a switch port? If so, what configuration settings do I need to set up so that all the devices can get their IP address from the main router?

  • Can I use iMac as wireless access point?

My network equipment: ADSL modem (which has no integrated wireless) with Buffalo AirStation (802.11b) wireless access point
I have had a reasonably stable broadband situation for a long time (hence the ancient equipment!) and have been able to access the internet via my ADSL modem/ethernet router using ethernet wires from my iMac G5, and two desktop PCs running Linux and Windows. I have also been able to access via the wireless Buffalo Airstation on various laptops over the years. My wife's brand new MacBook has been connecting wirelessly for a couple of weeks.
    Until last night...
Then the AirPort signal dropped to zero and a neighbour's network was suggested as the network I need. I looked at the Buffalo Airstation and there was a flashing red light (and flashing green ones as well). Being an experienced chap I turned it off and turned it back on! For about five minutes the Airport signal was back. Then it disappeared with flashing lights as before. Repeated a few times with no change...
I don't know if the problem is related to the neighbour's wireless signal or not but I decided that it could be the AirStation getting flaky so I tried creating a network on the iMac with a view to sharing its wired connection.
I can log on to this iMac network from the MacBook and I have changed the Systems Preferences to share the connection on the iMac but the MacBook says it is not connected to the internet. Anyone got any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Should I be entering the ADSL modem router in the internet connection details (which is what I have done) or should I be entering something else?
Is what I am trying to do even possible? I haven't found any exact parallels in the documentation or the forums...
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Does the Buffalo AirStation allow you to change the channel being used?
You can share an Internet connection over Ethernet to other computers using Airport. You set it up in System Preferences Sharing pane Internet tab (if using Tiger). On the MacBook, you should just use the default +Configure Using DHCP+ setting. Be sure you clicked to Start the sharing on the iMac. On the MacBook, be sure you select the wireless network that is the iMac's name.

  • Westell 327w and Wireless Access Point

I had DSL last year, but have since changed to FIOS, which I love.  So I have the Westell 327W modem/router that isn't being used.  I have decided to use it in another project for the 4 port ethernet and the wireless capability.
As this other project, we are using another service, which isn't DSL.  However, I figured that I could use the 327w as the wireless access point.  I currently have access to the internet through the provided internet service and from there I go into a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall.  From there I run an ethernet cable to the 327w.
As long as I plug a computer into one of the 4 ethernet ports on the 327w, I'm able to ping to the Internet using either the IP address or using DNS.  I'm able to surf and everything.
I have also set up the wireless and using WPA security and I'm able to connect a laptop to the wireless.  I get the IP address via DHCP from the ASA, so I have turned off the DHCP server on the 327.  I have also turned off the firewall.  I then test connectivity and I can ping anything on the network that is assigned by the ASA, but when I try to ping to an Internet address, by the address, I get request timed out.  I also don't get anything back on DNS and so forth.
What do I need to do on the 327 to allow the wireless to work with the current connection set up.
Thanks for the help and information.

I got it to work.  What I had to do was to set up the 327w in VLAN mode so that the wireless side would send the packets out the ethernet port to the ASA or another router.
In fact, I'm writing this on the wireless setting of the 327w.  So setting the VLAN allow the wireless to send and receive packets.

  • WRT54G - Cannot get DHCP to resolve

Hello, I have a WRT54G v 5.0 that I had got 2 years ago. It has worked wonderfully in what it had to do, but now it's cutting out on me for no apparent reason. I have a relatively simple setup Optimum Online -> WRT54G -> 2 computers [wired] and a wireless access point [for a laptop] so traffic really isn't an issue. In the 'Status' section of my router's webpage, I try to DHCP release/renew to no avail, I get returned a 0.0.0.0 address. However, when I directly plug my computer into the cable modem, I am given a signal and I can post this thread. I have upgraded the firmware, reset the router manually, unplugged it for about 15 minutes (think it clears the cache?) then replugged it in and also have reset to factory defaults to no avail. So, to sum things up, I do get an internet signal, but for some reason the router doesn't want to distribute the signal. I fear that it's being a hog and using the internet for its own benefits (sarcasm! )

No. You are the hog. Your computer which works directly on the cable modem hogs the connection. Try the other computer directly on the modem and most likely it won't work either.
You cable ISP locks the connection to the MAC address of the computer.
Depending on the ISP and the cable modem there are different ways to clear it:
    * call the ISP while not connected or ask them how to do it.
    * reset the modem.
    * unplug the modem from power. (of course restarting it with the router connected)
    * turn off the modem for the night.
If nothing works, you can also try the MAC address clone function in the router. Wire the modem to the internet port of the router. Wire the computer which is able to connect to the internet through the modem to a numbered LAN port. Now open http://192.168.1.1/ The MAC address clone should be a subtab on the main Setup tab. Clone the MAC address of the computer. It should be easy simply by pressing the button to clone "this" computers mac address. Don't forget to click on save settings afterwards. Then check the status page. The status page now should show you the MAC address of the computer. It should also connect now.

  • Make a Powerbook a wireless access point

Is it possible to make my Powerbook G4 act as if it were a wireless access point? I can see where I can create my own network, which I've done, I have a wireless PC laptop which will connect to my mac as it see's the wireless broadcast. However, the PC is unable to go out to the internet on the connection it has made to my Powerbook.
Why do you ask would I want to do that? Sometimes I'm at a location which has one ethernet port and I would like to share that connection with others so I plug in my Mac and want my Mac to act as if it were an access point. I'm not sure of the parameters of what to setup on the PC side as far as gateway and so on and it doesn't automatically configure I assume because my MAC isn't a DHCP server so it isn't serving up what the PC needs.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the prompt reply, this is the correct answer but I was aware of the WPA2/AES requirement to enable the higher rates that 802.11n supports. The question was really around whether the 3602 + 802.11ac module was capable of bridging as I found the passage stipulating that the models that supoport bridging are the 1040, 1140 and 1250 series. The problem is I do not have access to this device I was asked the question directly and wanted to find a definitive response.
    Hi Richard,
Thanks to you too for the reply, I'm aware the ac module is modular (no external connections) again I have no information around its location or distance. as you have correctly stated usually you'd use some kind of external antenna: patch, yagi, directional of some kind!
I seem to remember that the IOS for the 3600 was a skinny version purely for site surveying but this may have changed. I have been sent the 'show tech' and as Steve has pointed out it had only been configured for wpa tkip, I think the guys installing it must have just tried the express set up via the GUI!!!!
I'll update this post when I get the final results back, the distance it is spanning and the speed that it states it is connected at
    Kind regards

  • Set up time capsule as wireless access point

I am trying to set up my old apple time capsule as a wireless access point for my girlfriend. She is at college and the university does not permit routers, so I am trying to set the time capsule up so that is just takes the hardwired internet and allows wireless access to the internet so she can use her iPad and MacBook Air on the wireless instead of having to use a gigabit adapter to use the ethernet. The time capsule has the newest firmware and she is running mavericks which has the newest airport utility software. However I am not sure what settings to use to make this work. I am fairly intelligent when it comes to computers however I am not very skilled in networking. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you in advance!

How old is the Time Capsule? Running what firmware?
You have a problem.. If you cannot use the TC in router mode, then you are going to have to use it in bridge.. and it then depends on if the Uni system will hand out mulitple IP addresses. .which I doubt. In the end you might be stuck.. and it is not possible really with any system..
Bridge normally requires that the TC take an IP address and then clients connecting to the TC wireless will also get IP addresses.. but if the uni system only hands out one address then the TC has already captured it and there are no more available.. but try that method first.. as it is the easiest.
If it fails there is a more complicated method.. where we can give the TC a separate static IP in a different IP range and the wireless will still be bridged.. so the MBA or the ipad can use the wireless.. but only one can ever be online at a time.
The only way around this is to use the TC as a router contra the rules in the uni.. although I would suggest the uni only cares if you break their system. Most people don't.. but I am unsure what happens if you do.
Ask their IT people how to use a wireless only device like ipad, when they only provide ethernet. You might find there already is a wireless internet system as well.

  • Using the Aiport Express as a Wireless Access Point on Windows XP

I would like to use my airport express as a wireless access point so that it will connect wirelessly to my router and via an Ethernet cable to my laptop that does not have a wireless card. Also, I have a laptop that I don't have admin rights to, so I can't install the airport express software. I do have another computer in which I am able to set things up on, but ultimately I would like to use the Ethernet port on the airport express as a DHCP device that once configured it will automatically connect to my laptop even after powering off and on any machine with DHCP. I believe that this can be done - but correct me if I am wrong.
So far, I have been able to get the airport express to connect to my router, but I can't seem to get the intenet connection on my laptop. Can someone help? Does the software have to be installed to work even after it is configured?
    Thanks!

I have successfully gotten my AX to connect to my wireless router via the wireless client mode, but I can't seem to get the network connection to come out the either net jack of the AX.
Unfortunately, the wireless client mode will not activate the Ethernet port. The purpose of this mode is to connect to an existing wireless network as a client (just like any other device connecting to the network) and be able to either/or stream iTunes or share a USB printer.
The only mode where the Ethernet port is enabled, would be to configure the AX as either a relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). But, unfortunately, your Belkin wireless router may not be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Again, the only Belkin routers, that I'm aware of that are compatible are the F5D7230-4 & F5D7130.

  • E2000 wireless access point

I am wanting to use my E2000 router is a wireless access point to extend my network.  I have the router configured.  My main router has an IP of 192.168.1.1.  My secondary (E2000) has an ip of 192.168.1.2.  DHCP server is disabled on my E2000.  I have a cable running from port 1 of my main router to port 1 of my E2000 (not the internet connection, just a standard port).
When I connect my PC to my secondary router via a cable, everything works fine.  I can connect to the internet.  When I attempt to wirelessly connect to the E2000, I can connect, but I am unable to hit anything on the internet.  I simply get "The address is not valid" message.
    Any ideas?

You're actually cascading two routers with LAN-LAN set up, what you can do for isolation is make sure the internet works fine from the main router. So connect a pc via wired and wireless, if able to connect then everything is working from the main router. Since internet wired through the E2000 is working then the issue with the wireless part. I suggest you double-check the wireless settings on the 2nd router, make sure the SSID and the security type are the same except for the wireless channel where you could set them differently then try to connect again.
