1280x720 vs. 1920x1080

I have my Mac Mini connected to a 50” Panasonic Plasma using a DVI – HDMI cord (the native resolution of my set is 1366x768).
I was able to get my 1280x720 picture displayed perfectly on the screen after using SwitchresX, and performing a decent amount of tweaking (at first a significant portion of the picture was cut off when overscan was on, and when overscan was off, there was a black border around the edge).
I like the idea of using a higher resolution – 1920x1080 interlaced, but everything appears so small in this resolution. Is this how it is with everyone? The menu bar is so small I can hardly see it. It’s basically impossible to read anything because it’s so small (albeit sharp). Is there a solution to this? Are people able to effectively use 1080i resolutions on large tv’s?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

You can get rid of the black border by selecting overscan (in your display options). The problem will then be that the picture will be too large for the TV - so you'll have to use Switchresx or DisplayConfigX to change the size of the screen. I was only able to do it with this tutorial:

  • Display Pref Overscan Options

Throughout this forum people are having mixed results connecting a Mac Mini to a HDTV.
Often noted for overscan issues is "deselecting" the overscan option in System Preferences/Displays.
Can anyone tell me why when my Mini is connected to my Sony HDTV via DVI-to HDMI, this option does not present itself.
When I connect my 17" PowerBook to this same TV/same connection & I open System Preferences/Displays, I get a number of addtional tabs/buttons, one of which is "Options". Within this tab/button, an "overscan" toggle is available.
The ability to access this option on the Mini would get me most of what I have been trying to do w/apps like DisplayConfg (with which I've had less than satisfactory results).
    1) Why does the PowerBook give me this, but the Mini won't?
    2) What can I do to provide/install this native OSX functionality on the Mini?
    (Mini is: 1.42 Ghz/512 ram running 10.4.5)
Any help would keep more hair on my head.

    BSteely,
Apologize for not following-up earlier, but it was just this past weekend that I've been in a position to get back to working on this.
I'm happy to say, with regard to accessing "Display Preferences/Options/Overscan", there was a break through in my case.
The simple answer........an install of "Mac OS X Update 10.4.5 Combo" (available @ www.apple.com/support/downloads/), cleared out some unknown conflict. I now can control overscan @ the Mini. As you would expect, the display is bordered (pillar & letter boxed), but with settings @ the TV, am able to get a nearly perfect fit.
The highest resolution that will display is 1280x720 (although 1920x1080 interlaced is available in Preferences - this causes screen to go blank). For the time being this resolution is acceptable. I'll save 1080i for another day.
Anyway thanks for all of your help on this matter & throughout this forum.

  • Exporting HD footage

As some of you may know from a previous post, I am currently working on my Senior Capstone film project. My classes have all been FCP based, and I was really getting into risky waters by using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for my edit - due to potential compatability issues.
My last post discussed issues with some rippling in my footage, which a friend recommended deinterlacing the footage.
Now, I am trying to export my footage and have strict guidelines for my file format, some of which are not a codec available for the PC (Apple ProRes 422). I have exported an MPEG-2 Blu-ray of my project (so far the only setting that produced a quality product for some reason) and have been trying (and failing) to convert the footage.
Here is my workflow (my required export settings will follow):
My footage was recorded on 3 different Canon HV20's. All of my footage is stored on an external harddrive connected via FireWire 400 (with FireWire 800 adapter).
The project file is HDV 1080i/60i (30fps).
I exported the footage directly onto my external harddrive (not a large enough internal HD) as MPEG-2 Blu-ray leaving the default settings (Maximum Render Quality and Frame Blending I believe were both checked).
    The final result looks fine.
I downloaded software called MPEG Streamclip, as recommended for my fellow FCP classmates to use when converting their Apple ProRes files into H.264 .mp4 files. I chose the exact same settings as they were required. The result?: The first 10 seconds or so plays normally. Then, once the first visually chaotic scene (actors running all over the place on screen), the video cannot keep up and it appears to be playing in slow motion until it speeds up and slows back down.
I decided to try the H.264 Codec in PP. My Source Settings reads: 1440x1080 (1.3333), 29.97 fps, Upper, 00;14;41;22, 48000 Hz, Stereo
The Output settings chosen: NTSC, 1920x1080, 29.97 fps, De-interlaced AAC, 160 kbps, 48 kHz, Stereo VBR, 1 Pass, Target 30.00, Max 30.00 Mbps
Now, I understand the 1440x1080 doesn't match up with the 1920x1080 and I wondered if I should have approached this differently. I am required to either use 1280x720 or 1920x1080 for my output. 1440x1080 is NOT an option, even though this was the only setting I could use for my source footage which was captured from HDV tapes. Supposedly the Canon HV20 is 1920x1080 data compressed into 1440x1080, but I know nothing more than this as I wasn't familiar with the cameras before this project.
But for the official screening of our films, I'm required to provide the H.264 .mp4 file which will be placed onto a FCP timeline alongside my classmates' projects.
Any advice or recommendations to test out, please let me know. Here are the requirements for the output file which I've been adhering to but without successful results:
Drag the QuickTime file (.mov) youʼve just created into the center square (it has 5
    blue dots) on MPEG Steamclip.
    • Go to File > Export to MPEG-4
    • Under Compression, H.264 should be automatically selected. Be sure that it is.
    • Make sure the Quality bar is at 100%.
    • Check Limit Data Rate and type in 30; then make sure you have mbps selected
next to it in the drop down menu, NOT kbps.
    • Sound should set automatically.
    • Frame Size should remain (unscaled), as you selected this during the creation of
    your master file.
    • Make sure that Interlaced Scaling is unchecked if your film is ProRes 422 (most of
your films will be). If your file is DV NTSC, leave Interlaced Scaling checked, and
    check De-interlace Video as well.
    • Click Make MP4 to export.
    • Name the file and select where to save it on
    your hard drive.
    • Click Save.
I have played around with the Interlaced Scaling, trying both checked and unchecked as my original file is not ProRes 422. But the same video lag problem happens each time.

So perhaps then my Computer cannot handle the HD footage? What would be the recommended requirements to edit HD so that when I invest in another machine can handle this so I don't have to rely on someone else's computer to export my projects in the future?
You can edit and produce HD footage just fine on your machine -- I thought you were only having trouble playing back the final result.  There will be jerky playback when you're previewing the timeline, and some exports might take longer, but there is nothing preventing you from editing the full result on the hardware you have now.  You just have to have realistic expectations on how smoothly the editing and previewing will go.  Your hardware is perfectly capable of producing a broadcast-quality H.264 output file.  You just can't play it smoothly on that machine, is all.
As for your next machine, Adobe lists minimum and recommended hardware requirements on their website for all their products.

  • Help with image clipping with FCP 7 video filters

    Hi there,
I'm working with an image with text (one jpeg, the other psd), and when I apply a video filter (glow, bloom, or the like) that extends the outside of the image, it clips the edges.
I've tried expanding the area around the image in photoshop before I import to FCP, but the layer still hugs the image.
Is there a way to use the effects without clipping the edges?

The question was; "Are the still images the same pixel dimensions as your Sequence in FCP?"
Your Sequence in FCP has pixel dimensions.  In SD it would probably be 720x480 or 720x486.  In HD it could be 1280x720 or 1920x1080.  Your still images also have pixel dimensions that could be any number at all.  What I am asking is if the image pixel dimensions are at least the same or larger than your Sequence pixel dimensions.

  • Understanding FCP7 (from a Premiere Pro background) - Need help

    Hello all,
I have spent the better part of the past 5 days doing a couple video edits of projects that I had already completed in Premiere Pro CS4, in an effort to learn Final Cut Pro 7. I have a few observed differences that I am hoping the FCP veterans can help me understand. I am not new at all to video editing but I am neophyte when it comes to FCP7.
As resourceful as I think I am, I cannot find any references to others who have observed these differences which makes me wonder if the issue is mine entirely.
    *Previewing sequences is time consuming*
The same project that I completed in PProCS4 works to simply press play in the canvas to see the preview without needing to render. I am using the same elements in both projects. FCP7 will not attempt to play the preview unless I render (which seems to be taking 30 minutes to an hour for the particular project I am working on).
*Adding graphics or text layers have a two-minute limit in the timeline*
Unless I am prepared to copy/paste the 2:00 clip numerous times in the timeline or know ahead of time to extend the duration in the preview window before adding it to my sequence, I will be out of luck. I don't seem to be able to simply grab the right handle on the clip and extend it out to match the timeline of my full sequence if I so desire.
*Imported clips behave differently in each application*
As you may have read in another thread, I was having troubles with an imported WMV file that works fine in my PProCS4 installation, but required me to use MPEG Streamclip to convert it before I could use it without audio/video sync issues.
Please don't hear me saying one application is better than the other as I fully expect that they each have their place, but I feel like I am struggling unnecessarily with basic functionality in FCP7. I am sure it's a training issue. I am hoping you all can help me better understand.

OK...here's where you are making a very basic mistake. Final Cut Pro is a broadcast format based editing system. Meaning that it deals with video that meet video production standards. DV (720x480), Broadcast SD (720x486), HD (1280x720 and 1920x1080) and 2K and 4K (film) standards. Anything that doesn't fall within those standards aren't really well suited for FCP. So your 1024x768 sequence setting, and file type won't be the best way to test out and learn FCP. Those are computer monitor dimensions.
Premiere might be well suited for what you are currently working on. But if you want to start learning FCP, I suggest waiting until you have a video production based format to work with, and that you capture that footage with FCP, not another NLE.

  • Transition distortion and choppy bird wings - please help

    Hello. 2 issues please.
    *1. Transitions*
Lately, I've noticed that when I use certain transitions, after they're exported they come out rough, pixelated, and grainy -- cross-stretch in particular. It looks fine in the project. You can see an example of this distortion in this short vid where it's the only transition I use:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyBdhexZnCY
This video (as are all of mine) is also published on 8 other sites (magnify, yahoo, myspace, daily motion, blip.tv, viddler, and metacafe.) Videos are uploaded to TubeMogul which then distributes them accordingly. So the quality varies from site to site, even though my settings for the video are the same. For example, the transition looks the best on blip and viddler - the sites with the best quality consistently.
    *2. Choppy Bird Wings*
I videotape lots of birds in flight -- mostly raptors. On YouTube the wings in motion frequently appear chopped up, pixelated, and considerably distorted. The other sites are better. I know this has something to do with fast moving objects, but I hardly ever had this problem in the past. Only since YouTube removed its requirement that all vids could not exceed 100 MB.
I tried making a separate vid for YouTube exceeding the 100 MB. I experimented with different settings. Really didn't solve the problem. I even tried their new tips for Apple users and it just made things worse.
I'll tell you what I usually do, and then show you what YouTube recommends: First, my way:
Export -> quicktime conversion -> save menu:
    format: mpeg-4
    Options: file format: mp4
    video format: H.264
    image size: 768 X 576 SD
    frame rate: 30
    key frame every 24 frames
    Video Option:
    restrict profile to main
encoding mode: best quality - multi-pass
data rate: whatever gets me closest to 100 MB which depending on the video of course is usually anywhere from 2000 to 3000.
Now this is what YouTube recommends for Apple users:
    In the Options box:
    1. In the Video section select the following:
    * Compression Type: H264
    * Frame Rate: 30
    * Data Rate: Automatic
(if you choose to restrict the Data Rate, make sure to choose the highest value acceptable to you- more bits = better quality)
    * Key Frames: Automatic
    * Frame Reording: Unchecked
    2. In the Video section click "Size":
Dimensions: Set this to the original size of your video (Note: HD resolutions preferred- 1280x720 or 1920x1080)
    3. In the "Prepare for internet Streaming" section:
Select the "Prepare for internet Streaming" and choose "Fast Start" from the drop-down menu.
    4. Once you've made all of these selections, click the "OK" button to save your preferences.
    5. Add a title to the video file and click the "Save" button to save your edited version of your movie. Your project will then be exported and be ready to upload to YouTube.
    (end of YouTube instructions)
Okay so I've never made it for streaming. That box never even highlights when I'm doing my settings. When I did it their way, everything was much worse.
What am I doing wrong? How can I eliminate the distorted transitions and the choppy wings? I realize I might need to make a video with separate setting for YouTube, but if so, what would that be?
    Here are my specs:
    FCE 4
    Camera: Canon ZR 900
I capture with firewire to iMac (Mac OSX (10.5.6) Snow Leopard)
    frame size is usually 720 X 480
video rate is usually 29.97 fps
pixel aspect usually: NTSC CCIR 601
    16 bit integer
If you need any more information about what I'm doing, please feel free to ask. Thanks,
    Judy

Well I'm not seeing the exact same settings in the dialogs that you may be seeing; I'm running FCE 3.5 on the last version of Tiger (10.4.11) so that may be why. But generally the different settings have different data rates and can have different frame sizes too. For example, in the MP4 settings, some default to a 320 pixel width, obviously expecting to be shown on portable devices.
There are more qualified folks here than me to give advice on your jittering wings and transition issues, but I'm thinking your video was showing some interlacing that may have been amplified due to some mismatch of settings in FCE and your original footage. This I think accounts for the error messages you might be getting.
Basically you should go to your browser palette in FCE and find the window with your imported & captured clips, and show it all in list view. Then you can scroll horizontally and look at all the vital specs of your original footage. Is it shot in regular DV or anamorphic DV? Is it 720x480? etc. And then you need to make your Sequence settings match that.
Right-click on your Sequence icon (or select it and go the Sequence menu up top) and select 'Settings'. Then click the button that says "load Sequence preset", and load the preset that matches your footage. The pop-up menu has several options; you can ignore the PAL presets if you bought your camcorder in the USA. If you've shot in DV (I think you did) then you're looking for the DV NTSC presets, and you should probably use one of the 48Khz presets (the Khz refers to the audio sampling quality) and choose the anamorphic preset *if your original footage is anamorphic*. If it's not, then choose the non-anamorphic preset. (anamorphic is 4:3 footage later 'stretched' horizontally into 16:9.)
I have no experience trying to mix and match 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic footage in the same sequence but I can imagine there would be issues with that. Again, other folks here will answer that better than I can.
I hope this gets you started.....

  • Crashing on New Sequence

I installed the free trial and every time I try to create a new sequence the program crashes - help? I have an INTEL PC with plenty of storage - brand new.

You should be able to get the above from your system information on a PC, I've listed mine below ... but that list is, without acronyms:
    OS ... operating system, as in Win 7 Ultimate or whatever;
    CPU ... what main "chip" is your computer built around? I've got an Intel i7-4770 and on as seen below;
    RAM ... how much memory does your machine have, typically like 8Gb, 16Gb, or so;
    GPU ... your video card ... mine's the GTX770 from below;
vRAM ... how much video memory is on the video card ...
Driver version ... what does your system say is the driver in use for that video card?
The build number of PrPro I told you how to find within PrPro. You'll have to tell us what your media is from, whether it's say an mov file or mp4 or AVCHD ... whatever. Is it from a camera? If so, which?
There's an info palette in PrPro, click on any asset in the Project panel, choose the info palette, and it will tell you what type of codec, frame rate (23.976? 20.97? 60?) & frame size (1280x720, or 1920x1080 or whatever). Either that or in the Explorer right-click on a file and it should give you an option for details on that file.
Now ... you imported, then from the Project panel, got PrPro to make a new sequence, and when you try & do something with that sequence, then it crashes? A screen grab of your sequence settings would be awfully nice ... Windows has the "Snipping Tool" buried in the programs/Accesories folder off the start menu. Send that to your desktop as a shortcut, drag it down onto your task bar, then go into PrPro and select a panel ... click on the snipping tool on your task bar, then use the cursor to select the "box" of the screen (drag it diagonally to select an area) you want to get a picture of, save it to your desktop with a name ... then paste that into your message.

  • 1024 X 768 resolution...alright already.

My screen resolution IS set at 1024 X 768 - why do I keep getting an error message that says I should change it to the best optimal viewing resolution of 1024 X 768?

    Bill,
What is your interest or need for 1024x768? Is it because that's the size of your original images? Is that the size you want to output? If the latter, why that size - for example, are you thinking you need that size to fill the screen when you show the photos?
iPhoto, iMovie, FCE and iDVD can ALL do slideshows of your photos and include a music track. They accept 1024x768 original images. All except iDVD can output a QuickTime file of your finished slideshow, including the music. The video apps will adjust the size of your photos to fit standard DV 4:3 720x480 (or possibly HD dimensions of 1280x720 or 1920x1080 if you work in HD) - but sizing in the video realm is not the same as sizing in the digital photo realm. If your concern is image quality, regular DV 720x480 will give you a very nice quality image on your screen.
iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD can also automatically adjust the onscreen time of each photo so that the complete slideshow matches the length of the music track.
Is that what you were looking for?
Note: I just read your following post and realized you are in the UK, the DV pixel sizes I mentioned above are NTSC, not PAL.

  • IPhoto 11: Best practice to export a slideshow

    Hi all,
after reading some posts on this matter I'm almost more confused than beginning so I hope someone can help me with "latest" best practices.
Hi have iPhoto 11 and normally I'm making slideshows for watching on HD TV.
For DVD burning I'm using  Toast 11 (instead of iDVD).
Then, considering that converting in DVD I'll loose in quality, which are the best export parameters I should use ?
I've been suggested to use (I may have transalted something wrongly as I'm using the Italian version):
    Export -> Personal Setting
Keeping "Export for Quick Time usage" -> Options
    Under Video tab:
    Compression: H.264
Speed Frequency: 25 (for PAL) with Automatic below
    Compressor Quality: Max
    Codify: Quick (single)
    Under Dimension tab:
    Dimension: 1920x1080 HD
Thanks in advance for your advice here.
    Regards
    Giancarlo

OK, so let me repeat just to be sure I understood well.
Could you confirm that all parameters I'm using are OK but dimensions?
    About dimensions:
    a. use 720x526 when I'm burning a standard DVD for 4:3
    b. use 1024x576 when I'm burning a standard DVD for 16:9 .... is this feasible or just a. is available ?
    c. use 1280x720 or 1920x1080 when I'm burning a BR (for HD watching)
    Am I right ?
    Regards
    Giancarlo

  • How do I get non-pixelated quality for imported image?

I want to import a high quality image from Photoshop into Final Cut Express 4.0 and be able to watch the clip
on fullscreen without loosing too much quality. The quality decreases to a very pixelated version of my image
and does not look good at all. Any suggestions?

Exactly what is the image -  TIFF?  JPEG?  PNG?  Something else?
What is the image size (pixel dimensions)?
What are your sequence settings in FCE?
FCE prefers JPEG images, and ones that do not require a huge amount of scaling to fit into the video frame.  Keep in mind that a video frame is 720x480 (DV-NTSC), 720x576 (DV-PAL), 1280x720 (HD), 1920x1080 (HD), or 1440x1080 (HDV non-square pixels).  You don't need much more resolution than that to get a good video image.

  • Can we make a list of compatible LCD tvs?

    Hi
Can people who succesfully got Plasma or LCDs to work with there mac mini please post the model numbers, prices and resolutions.
It would realy save people like me time in shopping and avoid risks in getting the wrong one.
Thank you so much in advance

good idea. do you mean PPC mini or INtel mini?????
don't think it matters. essentially what you want to do is look at the resolution of the TV.
I would shoot for either 1280x720 or 1920x1080. Those are both HD resolutions.
Some Plasmas run at a funky 1377x932 or something. Those resolutions are whack!!!!
Search for 720 or 1080 and you'll be good.
some TVs will display a black band around your display. that would suck.

  • Keynote to Quicktime export

I currently have keynote '09 and am having trouble producing a video that works on an HD TV.
It does not seem to matter whether I use 1280x720 or 1920x1080 when I export it as a quicktime movie and specify HD the movie never plays right on the TV.
It always stretches any photos horizontally.
The only way I can solve this problems to make a the movie standard size. 1024 x 728
Do you know the secret of creating an HD video with keynote that solves this problem?
Thanks for your time and response.
    Gordon

It might sound obvious and you've probably checked this already, but does the exported QuickTime movie play OK on a normal computer monitor? If it looks stretched, then it's a Keynote problem, but if it looks OK, it's a problem with your TV's settings - or maybe you've got your system preferences > Displays set incorrectly. I assume you've got your TV connected to the Mac's DVI / DisplayPort output?

  • Exporting to different frame dimensions

I imported a couple of .mov files of 3D flythroughs made with SketchUp to dimensions 1200 x 900 into iMovie HD 6.0.3. I stitched these together in IMovie. No problem - the length is only about 1 minute. When I, however, export to full quality the frame size (and the quality) is reduced. What settings can I use in Expert Settings to get my movie to have the same dimensions? I tried setting the size in Expert Settings, but the time it takes to export is immense - just kept climbing... I want to use the movie on an overhead projector. What are the default settings for "full quality"? I don't want to change any other parameters - only the size.

    you did allready..
on IMPORT iM converts into TV-dimensions, 720x480 (NTSC), 768x576 (PAL), 1280x720 and 1920x1080...
'full quality' exports the timeline in the settings, you did choose on 'New Project'... s.a.

  • Can QT Pro do this?

I need a program that can take a uncompressed 5gb AVI movie and convert it into a MOV with the following resolutions:
320×180, 640×360, 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Will Quicktime Pro do this?
    Thanks
    Chaz

    Here's part of the answers...
In QuickTime Pro 7.0.4, Mac OS X 10.3.9, pressing command-C to copy without first selecting anything copies a single frame of the video as a PICT image which can be pasted in Photoshop.
    Save as AVI.component
--Included with MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 - not needed for playback
--Adds the following 'things' to QuickTime:
    spit:VfW :MPSc "Save as AVI"
--Allows QuickTime to save into avi files without recompressing.

  • Exported gfx looks terrible

This community has always helped me, so I hope it can again because I'm at my wit's end. Working in FCP 7, I have an animated graphic which I didn't create (it was delivered to me).  It's an HD project, sequence settings are 1920x1080, square pixels, Apple ProRes (HQ), 29.97fps.  I'm trying to export to the following specs: HD 1280x720, square pixels, Apple ProRes (LT), 30fps.
Original file looks like this (very clean, sharp edges):
File in the sequence looks like this (edges a little soft, pixelated):
I was able to export it once, with it coming out just right. Using the the delivery specs provided above, the only setting I remember changing was that I went to custom size for 1280x720 so the edges wouldn't be cut off by the default option:
I need to export it again, at the end of this and several other videos, and it keeps coming out like this (which is how it looks in the seqience):
I've tried several variations of the export settings:
Default ProRes Quicktime settings for 1280x720 and 1920x1080
Quicktime conversion for 1280x720, custom, 1920x1080
    de-interlaced and not de-interlaced
    30fps and 29.97fps
Working on a brand new Macbook Pro
    OS 10.9.2
    2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7
    16GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
    Intel Iris 1024 MB
I hope I've explained this clearly and provided all the relevant information.  Please, somebody, help!

I don't know what happened to my images, but I actually got the answer from a post on Creative Cow. I went into the browser, found the gfx clip  and changed the field dominance to "none".  Thanks for posting though, it reminded me to come bak and psot the answer in case other people have the same problem,
