1280x800 Widescreen Issues

Im trying to get my widescreen laptop screen running at 1280x800. I looked around for solutions on the internet, and tried editing xorg.conf, but nothing I do seems to let me get to 1280x800. Ive also upgraded my Radeon drivers with the drivers off the ATI website with no luck.

I have a 1280x800 LCD screen on a Dell Inspiron 8600.

IOS4 TV Out Widescreen Issue

I am having an issue with my 3g iPod Touch after upgrading to iOS4. I have several docks around my house connected to my tvs through video cables and they are all widescreen sets. Before when I had the widescreen option in the video settings it automatically formatted the video for my widescreen tv. Now that option does not do that... in fact, it does not do anything at all. I have tried it both ways on all my tvs with the same result.
Is this another iOS4 bug?

I did a complete restore on my iPod Touch and no dice... the widescreen setting still has no functionality whatsoever. I decided to purchase a composite cable (I have been using my dock with the s-video connector in the back) to try it out with that and see if it worked and still the same problem.
I have been lucky enough to not have any huge problems with it except for this but I feel frustrated for all of the people who have had really serious issues. I find this to be very unlike Apple... You would expect this sort of thing from Microsoft.
I must also add that I called Apple Support to kindly report this issue to them (I also emailed but I would like this to be fixed sooner rather than later so I thought I should take the most direct approach). After explaining the problem and that it was only something that had occurred since upgrading to ios4 the representative that I spoke to asked me if I knew how to operate the widescreen setting on my television and suggested that I simply stretch the picture to fill the screen. When I told her that was not an option she was confused and suggested that I take the product in to be repaired (on my dime). Embarrassing.

Continued Widescreen Issues/Questions

From what I gathered, there is no solution to having our widescreen movies to show up widescreen on a dvd. I tried some of the suggestions, but none have worked. If someone knows a clear easy step solution, starting with exporting from iMovie (what exact expert settings or can I just use full quality), please, please let me know.

Widescreen Issues

Hi folks
I'm running Quicktime 7.1 Pro and a Miglia TVMini on a Mac Mini with a widescreen display. Since i upgraded to the current version of quicktime all 16:9 programmes or 16:9 QT files are now letterboxed. (Auto Aspect on the TVMini is just pure comedy now)
The letterboxing would be fine on a 4:3 display, but no good on this one. Outside of cropping the video does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve constant fiddling?

I may be stating the obvious, if so, I apologise, it's all I can think of > Maybe your QT setting are messed up, go to "View Movie Properties" (option+j), click on Video Track and look at the visual settings. It will tell you the movies actual size and display size, as well as giving you the option to "preserve aspect ratio" Perhaps tweaking some of these settings will do the trick. You'll need to save the movie after making changes in this way, in order to keep the prefs.

16:9 widescreen issue

I have a movie in 16:9 and in DVD Studio pro it looks widescreen and through a projector and on a computer it is widescreen but on my tv it is anamorphically smushed. Is this just a problem with the TV-DVD player communication or do i need to something in DVD SP to make sure this doesn't happen.

Or it could be the DVD Player. They usually have a setting for how to handle widescreen format.

Exporting to widescreen issues

Hello.
I have FCE 3.5 and am having a problem exporting wide-screen footage. I have an older Panasonic MiniDV (standard definition) camera that records in widescreen (16:9). However, even when I import in anamorphic, Final Cut still exports with the black bars on the top and bottom of the video. In FCE I have the clip and the sequence set to anamorphic. I would like those black bars on the top and bottom of the exported video gone because they will eventually be on Youtube and youtube will add even more black bars to make the video appear much smaller than it actually is. How can I export without the black bars?

You have edited into a 4:3 sequence not a 16:9 sequence. Change your preset to DV anamorphic and make a new sequence. Copy and paste the content of the old sequence into the new sequence. Select all the clips in the new sequence and use Remove Attributes to reset the distort function. You may have to redo any motion effects you created.

Widescreen Issue

I just got a Canon Optura camcorder which records in 16X9, I can make a widescreen dv project in iMovie with no probles. But after burning in iDVD, it will only play in widescreen on a widescreen tv. When I play on a 4x3 TV the movie does not get letterbox, its full screen and the sides are cut-off.
Is there a setting in iMovie or iDVD i need to use yo get this to work right on all TV's???

Okay...
First you double-click on the .IMG file. That will mount the file. It will probably also launch DVD Player, which you can just quit once it comes up.
You need to open a Terminal window, and you should move to the desktop. At the command prompt in the Terminal, type:
cd ~/desktop
That sets your current working directory to the desktop. Now try:
ls /Volumes
You should get a list of disk names, and one of them should be the name of the disk image you just mounted. Take note of the volume name. Let's say, for example, you get this output:
Macintosh HD MyBrokenDVD
I'm going to guess that you downloaded 'idvd-ws-fix-1.1' to your desktop. To use it, you should be able to type:
idvd-ws-fix-1.1/idvd-ws-fix --output=MyFixedDVD.img "/Volumes/MyBrokenDVD"
That should read the mounted volume and create a new one on your desktop called "MyFixedDVD.img".
A more correct way to do it would be to copy the two executable files in the idvd-ws-fix-1.1 directory (idvd-ws-fix and mkisofs) into your /usr/local/bin directory. Then you don't have to specify the pathname of the script...you just run it with the correct flags and switches.
Once the script has run, you can quit the Terminal and go back to the Aqua GUI.

IDVD widescreen issues

I created a movie using iMovie 09. The movie is made up of photographs, video, transitions, titles and music. Under project properties, I had selected a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. When the movie was completed, I "shared" it with iDVD. In iDVD I chose a 7.0 theme which was also supposed to be widescreen. In the preview windows of both iMovie and iDVD my project comes out as a widescreen movie; however once the movie is burned onto a DVD using iDVD, the movie plays as an anamorphic 4:3 movie, with obviously parts of the movie cut off on the sides. What am I doing wrong? I want the movie (when it is burned to DVD) to play in widescreen.

I had this same problem. I ended up calling apple support. They had me put the burned DVD into my computer to see if it would play in the widescreen format there. It did. Turned out that I needed to adjust my DVD player's settings to a 16:9 format. I did that and now my DVD plays in widescreen format through my DVD player as well as my computer.

Handbrake-widescreen issue

Just converted my first home DV vob file using handbrake, in apple tv format. Only problem was that it did not appear full screen, but had two black bands either side...any ideas?

If your camera is not a widescreen camcorder then this is normal to avoid stretching people horizontally to fill the screen or cropping their heads/feet off if things are kept in proportion.
If you have a widescreen camcorder, then it may be you DVD authoring software is not flagging 16:9 in a way Handbrake understands or expects - manual settings may be needed in Handbrake.
Does your DVD playback normally via a DVD player? (assuming it or the TV doesn't have some auto crop/zoom feature).

External TV Widescreen Issue

COuld someone please help me. I have a Macbook Pro Core Dual and a 32inch widescreen Technosonic TV. For some reason when I plug the TV into the laptop it refuses to display in widescreen on my TV so i get 2 ugly thick black lines either side of the image on the TV. I have tried connecting using VGA, DVI, DVI-VG & DVI-HDMI. Could someone please suggest something else. Its frustrating cos i want to use front row on my tv but the picture just doesnt look right without Widescreen.

Well I am not sure if this helps but I have a core 2 and it works perfect with a Samsung LCD TV 32". Do you have the TV set to widescreen and not 4:3? Silly question. Sorry I have no help for you but it does work. Good Luck!

Widesreen Viewing Problem

I've spent an hour or so reviewing the widescreen issue here, but so far I have been unable to determine if there is a fix. Any insights would be much appreciated.
I'm using a Canon Elura 100, shooting footage in their widescreen mode (it may not be true widescreen). I import into iMovieHD using the DV-NTSC-Widescreen mode with the Automatic Letterboxing selected in preferences. No letterboxing occurs. Should it?
The video looks great on the computer or when transferred to a Quicktime movie, but when I burn it with iDVD and play it on a standard 4:3 TV the sides are cut off the video. Also, I've used the Stripped Subtitle" and even with QT Margins unchecked, the beginning of the subtitles are cut off.
Also, I expected it to have letterboxing on screen when playing on a 4:3 TV, but there is none. Finally, when I played the DVD on a 16:9 TV the sides of the video are still cut off.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this just "overscanning"? Is there any setting in iDVD to tell it to burn the movie with widescreen flags? Is this widescreen problem fixed in iMovie 6? Will I have any better results with Roxio Toast?
Sorry for asking so many questions, but please answer any that you can!

It may not look it but it is!
On the assumption that what you are trying to achieve is for a widescreen movie to play in widescreen on any TV, try the following:
HOW TO MAINTAIN 16:9 ASPECT FROM IMPORT TO BURN
This is the way I do it. There is no compulsion on you to do it my way, but this works (for me). I started this method before iMovie and iDVD were upgraded to 6.0.3, and because not all elements of the various iDVD themes (particularly the pre-iDVD 6 ones) are consistent in keeping to 16:9 throughout the process.
The widescreen preview works just fine when you check your finished project within iDVD. The problem only happens when you either burn a project or save it to an image.
A bug in iDVD 6, particularly when working with PAL, and which has been reported to Apple, is that the sub-menus in many of the themes (the chapter settings) default to 4:3 aspect, NTSC and mpeg 1, instead of the desired 16:9 in mpeg 2 in PAL. This may be partly a leftover from iDVD 5 or even a newer ‘feature’ of iDVD 6. Either way, it is annoying when it happens, and we must hope Apple cure it in iDVD 7. In the meantime here is my failsafe workaround, which sounds a lot more complicated when reading about it, that it is in practise.
Living in the UK, I use PAL (25 fps). Wherever you see a reference to PAL (25 fps) in the following you may substitute NTSC (30 fps) in the various settings mentioned (if you don’t live in Europe), the basic idea is the same. I still use this method, and take these steps, regardless of whether it is always necessary. Worst case scenario: it would have worked anyway. Best case scenario: it works perfectly where it otherwise wouldn’t!
The object of the exercise is therefore to ‘fix’ all constituent parts of the project (video, titles, theme, effects, even audio!) in the desired 16:9 aspect to avoid producing a DVD where the movie is in 16:9 and the menu is in 4:3 or where other irritating surprises lurk in your project, which you only discover after burning a coaster!
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
You have finished your iMovie project with music, transitions and so on, and saved it to you Movies Folder. Before you started the project you naturally set it to DV Widescreen.
Open iDVD. Give the project a name, and save it as Widescreen if it didn’t default to the same aspect as your iMovie project. Now import the iMovie project into iDVD, choose a theme (any theme you like, even if it prefers to stay at 4:3) and save the project. Do what you would normally do to the theme and its drop zones. Save the project.
Now save as Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click IFO.
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

IDVD and standard (NTSC) television resolution...

If I understand correctly, television has 525 horizontal scan lines (NTSC), but I cannot find any options in any video conversion apps that offer a resolution option of 525x?.
What is the best resolution to choose when converting DVD files (which may be widescreen) to play on a standard television set with no black bars above, below or on the sides?
Also, what DVD file format should I choose to be safe as far as everyone being able to use it? If someone has a DVD console that is 9 years old, what is the safest file format to use.
And lastly, iDVD says it can use a dual-layer disc for up to 7.7GB of space. All my dual-layer blank DVD discs say they can hold up to 8.5GB.
Why the huge discrepancy?

The reason for this is that 525 scan line standard refers to analog video. See this guide for further confusion: http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/
The standard for NTSC digital video (DV) is 720x480

The resolution should be that of the source (in this case the DVD) ... but you might run into trouble here because of widescreen issues as widescreen has the same resolution but a different pixel aspect ratio.

The video format for a DVD is given: It is multiplexed MPEG-2 (VOB files). iDVD will output just that.

Serious dilema with final cut x

Hi guys,
Firstly i apologise because I'm sure I'm not the first to ask these questions.
Let me explain myself first.
I work in retail and earn next to nothing, a few years ago I invested in a macbook pro (on finance) and a canon xl1 and a fancy tripod - for me a giant stretch but was under the impression that being a new apple customer and reading up so many great reviews from the industry professionals on apples site regarding Final Cut Studio it would pay off and apple would look after me.
I started with final cut express as it seemed to be a great tool and I wasn't quite ready for the studio as I was new to editing. A few years on and I have generally enjoyed learning to use it, have had loads of problems with widescreen issues with quicktime and iDVD isnt quite up to the challenge but other than its been great and I've started getting pretty hot at editing.
So I was beginning to think lets take it to the next level, why don't I get Studio and use the tool that some of the biggest movie production companys are using, and I was so close to getting in BUT then I heard theres a new one coming out, so obviously I was like 'coolio, I'll wait for that!'
WOAH! whats going on?!! I'm yet to hear a good thing about Final Cut X! I know with any review you generally hear the negatives more than the positives.
I have so many questions running around my mind that I'm going to forget half....
I have a great camcorder, I adore my XL1, honestly I know its not a HD cam but as we all know, its kinda irrelevent because good lighting and audio make a good video, but why have Apple removed the ability to import tapes? Seriously who are Apple to say 'nah we don't like tapes?!!' - I really cannot get my head around this.
I know a lot of people are annoyed you cant load previous projects from previous versions and that would really annoy me aswell but I'm not in that position.
Why didn't apple make final cut X a new version of Express and make final cut studio 8 with the original features, layout and price tag instead of alienated its professional users? Does anyone know about responses from the pros who made these big budget films like '300' and 'the social network'?
This brings me to my next question: As i said i work in retail, a computer store as it happens and we have just got in a new software called Avid Studio. Now, I've always been aware of Avid as another pro tool and seems to me like Avid have responded well to the final cut critism, straight away i read 'supports tape'!!
I read right through it and it looks really good and has lots of things apple do not offer. Has anyone used this software or Avid? I'm considering moving away from Apple now including my iPhone, I just cant justify spending so much on them anymore when they just change there ways so suddenly and without considering poor little me!! Any ideas??
I know there are folk on here like Mr Wolsky who are fantastic members and have been really helpful with tech support but come one guys lets really consider what I'm saying.

They haven't. You can import from DV tape without problem.
Depends what you constitute as a problem.
It will not batch import from DV, nor can you mark a timecode in and out to capture,
manual "capture now" only!

Please Help, Missing Project File and Discussion Advice Isn't Working.

Here's the rundown:
I was working in iMovie HD 5 when the power got cut out on my external hard drive. When I try to reload my project I got the 'Missing Project File' error that has been discussed by many on this board.
There are two known fixes.
1) Open the package and go back to the '~' version of the project.
2) Use the MovieTimeline.mov in the Cache to import it back into a new project.
Solution #1 simply didn't work.
Solution #2 imports the full video as a single long clip but is significantly lower in quality than the original version.
In addition, the movie was shot in true widescreen and plays in quicktime in 16:9 mode, but when I import that .mov file into iMovie HD for some reason bars are added on the sides and top and bottom of the frame, and the bars are thicker on the sides so it stretches the picture and makes everything look taller.
Although I'd certainly much rather have my original project timeline back, I could still continue my work if I could figure out how to import the .mov so that it retains the quality and size that it had to begin with.
Does anyone have any idea how to import it without losing the quality and size or how to gain back an earlier project save?
Please help if you can, my grandfather's 83rd birthday gala celebration (2 days away!) depends on it!

• You shouldn't see any difference. The video imported from the Timeline Movie.mov is exactly the same as the original video. My guess is you're seeing some side effect of the widescreen issue. That, or your iMovie playback settings have changed.

NTSC 16x9 Anamorphic

Is there a secret to doing NTSC 16x9 anamorphic projects in Livetype? Unbelievably the manual only addresses widescreen issues in the glossary. My workaround is to do HD, bring it into FCP then render it. That works, but there must be a lower-overhead approach. Whatever it is, it's a pretty boneheaded move not to address it directly. Ah, seamless integration -- and this is version 2...
