14 hours to compress a one hour quicktime?

Can this be right?
This is how log it took me to compress a one hour quicktime (4:3 Pal) into an MPEG-2 for DVDSP.
Admittedly my iBook is not the fastest Mac around but this seems wait time seems... extreme.
Anyone have suggestions as to how I can speed the process up?
I was using the latest version of Compressor, and at the best quality 60 minutes setting.
The original file was 11 gig.
Thanks,
Jake.

My little Mac Mini can take quite a while (30 minutes, even an hour) just to compress a few minutes of video while using Compressor. I have started exporting the file (as mentioned here) and then sending it to Compressor (rather than sending it to Compressor straight from FCP) and that does speed up things.
Your settings are completely different from the ones I typically use (I make a lot of H.264 for web), but frankly, I'm not surprised at the length of time it's taking. Compressor can be really slow.

    hi
the problem is in the firefox tab strip at the bottom of the page. i have attached two screenshots . when i open more than 6 tabs, they all get compressed into 1 tab. i want all tabs to stay open individually, and the tab strip should therefore have a page scroller icon forming when many tabs open. i have had this in the earlier computer i had, but recently got a new one. now i cant figure how to set firefox to do what i need.

  • Will Quicktime Pro convert/compress .dv files to Quicktime?

I have .dv movies that are taking up so much space on my hard-drive. I purchased Quicktime Pro to compress those files so they will take up less space. I don't see in the tutorial how to do this. Could someone please point me in the right direction so I can see how to do this? Thanks!

    Of course.

This is impossible to do until you define what you mean by "QuickTime."
Basically, a "QuickTime" (MOV) file is any form of dat that can be placed in an MOV file container -- not a compression format in and of itself. Therefore, your first step is to determine what you really want to do here. For instance, a DV (.dv) stream file normally consists of an audio DV compressed track along with a video DV compressed track. DV(25) files normally contain audio and video tracks having a data rate on the order of 28.5 Mbps each (or about a 57 Mbps total average data rate). As you indicated, these do make for rather large files. You could, of course, reduce the total data rate by nearly half if you merge the original video track with AIFF (linear PCM) converted audio (or even smaller if you use an AAC audio track). The catch here is that QT Pro does not have a DV "pass thorough" video option which allows you to simply convert the audio while retaining the original DV video. So unless you are willing to manually convert the audio track and then manually replace the original Audio track with your converted audio, you would normally have to convert both audio and video to another compression format.
In this latter case, you could select any valid codec supported by QT as augmented by installed components. Typical possibilities would be AIC/AIFF, unlimited H.264/AAC, Motion-JPEG/AIFF Photo-JPEG/AIFF, supported MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC profiles with limited data rates. These compression options are all compatible with iMovie '08 editing and represent a full range of possible data rates (which in turn determine your final file size). For instance, an AIC/AIFF file would normally end up with a total data rate on the order of 20-22 Mbps with an unlimited H.264/AAC about 16-18 Mbps, M-JPEG 10 Mbps, Photo-JPEG 8-9 Mbps, and MPEG4/AAC or H.264 as low as you can stand the loss in quality and still retain a video track.
These various compression formats basically represent a compromise between file size and quality with the quoted data rates being typical for SD content with an "average" quality setting. While actual data rates are always dependent on the actual file converted, the stated averages should provide some idea as to what you could expect in comparison to your original source file -- i.e., the AIC/AIFF file would be expected to be about 62-65% the size of your DV file, unlimited H.264/AAC 28-31%, M-JPEG/AIFF 17-18%, Photo-JPEG 14-15%, and MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC in the 3-5% range with "reasonable" quality levels.
Since each codec has somewhat different characteristics and user options, I will not go into specifics for each here. What I would recommend at this point is for you to select a short file with typical content and convert it wising the various codecs and determine what compromise in file size and quality you can live with at the display size you plan to use. This in turn will likely depend to some extent on what you plan to do with the final file. For the archiving of files for later use/editin, you like want files to retain as much quality as possible which, in turn, usually implies large file sizes. On the other hand, distribution files can be much more highly compressed as a "finished" product which you don't intend to re-compress or edit further. Remember, when you compress a file more compact format you are literally "throwing away" data so you should be most judicious in selecting that appropriate format to which to compress your files for the saving of file space.

When I compress my movie to quicktime, the audio doesn't sync properly, even though it looks fine in iMovie. How do I fix this?

Audio on the timeline, especially stream, tends to play very reliably. Is this project under any NDA or can you provide a FLA to examine? Let me know if you want to private message it and I'll shoot you a message.
What version of Flash Player are you targeting and is this AS2 or AS3?

  • 54 Hours to Compress 1 Hour Quicktime?

I'm using Compressor to compress FCP quicktime (1 hour long video, w/music, etc)... and using the DVD Best Quality 90 minute setting, compressing to ac3/m2v-- and it's telling me it will take 54 hours. Could this be possible? I'm at 2% complete, so it seems like it's doing something, but it is taking an ETERNITY.
    Thanks.

The file is located in a folder on my external hard drive, and the destination is in another folder on the same hard drive.
I exported a reference quicktime movie out of FCP, with DVD Studio Pro Markers at current settings, which was HDV 1080i60.
I was also trying to import this into imovie, so that I can just use iDVD as an alternative, but I was getting errors importing the file as well.
Thanks for getting back to me!

  • 100 GBs compressed to one DVD (Source JPEGs and 720p 60FPS)

Is it possible to compress 100 GBs of 720p 60fps (some of the vidoes where 1080p) down to one standard single sided DVD?  I don't care if the quality is bad, I just need to compress it down.  How do I do that? Is it possible? There are also a few JPEGs in there too.
    Thanks!

So we've all pointed to editing in Premiere as the only reasonable way to do this.
So I decided to take the time to add up the duration of all the 641 clips and wow, who would have thought it would be soooo long! 16 HOURS!  So with 16 hours with of video (between the two DVDs) is there any hope of getting 8 hours of video on each DVD?
My rule of thumb: 2 hours per disk okay quality; 4 hours per disk very poor, but Encore might do it.  any more per disk I suspect Encore will reject a datarate that low.
Also, because I only occasionally filmed in 1080p at 30 fps, what if I deleted all those clips and just included the 1280 x 720 (59.94 fps) and 640 x 480 (59.94 fps--because they are the same frame rate would Encore be able to handle it?
You can't mix different formats on the same time line.  so you had to separate them anyway.  Deleting a small part of what you shot will not make this any more likely to fly.
There are only a few clips that I need to shorten duration with, other than that, all the clips are exactly how I need them to be in terms of content and length.  I'm trying to avoid having to take all the time to create everything in PrmPro (also I don't know how to do that "link" function which you guys are referring to).
It is true that at this point, your only success will involve some luck.  If your not lucky with Premiere, well, you're just outa luck!  (All this said in a commiserating, sorta been there, kind of sympathy.)  The big time issue will be transcoding.  That is going to happen in either system.
Open Premiere.  Import one of your clips.  Drag it to the new item icon.  Click on the timeline of the sequence that is created.  Go to File -> Adobe Dynamic Link (or is it Export?), "Send to Encore".  It will open a new Encore project with that sequence.  That is all there is to "dyamic link."
Instead of that little experiment, you import all your clips to Premiere, I think separated into bins (folders) by the format.  Now put them in the order you want into a sequence.  I would create several sequences based on content also.  So you've got let's say 8 sequences, 4 720 and 4 480.  Any sequence that is less than 3 hours would make one DVD.  You wouldn't even need to worry about multiple dynamic linked sequences.
Be sure you set you Encore preferences to using Adobe Media Encoder for transcoding.  If you are 64 bit, it will be faster.
In Encore, set the transocode setting for the DL'd sequence to "Automatic."  My suggesting is do not try to get more than 3 hours.  Do any menu work.  (simplest: one menu, one button to the one timeline.)  Then right click on the sequence and pick transcode now.
Your only simple option for 2 disks?  Forget Premiere.  Pick no more than 3 hours of your 720 footage.  Put that on one disk.  Same for the 480.

  • Determining pre-existing compression settings in a Quicktime mpg file

I am in the process of editing a promotional reel. Some of the footage I have been given is supposedly uncompressed QT files, other files may have been compressed. I would like to know if there is an easy way to determine whether the files have already been compressed and if so, what settings or codec have been assigned to the video and audio. When I bring a file into the batch window and then preview, I get frame rate info (25fps), running time, and frame size (720 x 576). Is this everything I need to know? Should I be importing to FCP to get this info? Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Open your clips in Quicktime player and open the movie inspector (apple I, or window show movie inspector) This will show you the video and audio codecs frame rate data rate etc.

  • Unable to compress to mp4 or quicktime with compressor 2

After I upgraded from compressor 1.2 to compressor 2.0.1 I found out that the mpeg2 quality was not as good as that of compressor 1.2, however the quality of mpeg4 using a compressor 1.2 preset was as good as that of compressor 1.2. Trying to improve mpeg2 quality I deleted all the compressor 1.2 presets as recommended by Apple. Now the mpeg2 quality is very good. However when I try mpeg4 or quicktime, compression always fails with the following message: "Failed: 3x crash service down".
The resulting files cannot be opened with quicktime (as expected) with the error (-2048)
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I have tried everything I could find in this forum but nothing has worked. Reinstalling compressor 1.2 will not work either.
    Thanks

I'd suggest that you look in your console and system logs to see if there are any error messages or warnings that might hint at what could be going wrong. You can view these logs by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac" and then "More Info..." This will bring up the System Profiler and then under the left-hand column ("Contents") go down to "Software" and select "Logs."
You will likely find a lot of messages in both of these logs, even some warnings that have nothing to do with your particular problem. Just scan through the information looking for anything that seems related to Compressor, FCP, Qmaster, QuickTime, or any warning about a missing or incompatible component that could be related to the above.

  • Compress from imovie to quicktime, saving chapters

    Hello,
I am creating movies in imovie and compressing them into quicktime movies. I have created chapters in imovie and want to preserve the chapters in the quicktime movie. What compression settings should I use for this?

I can't find a chaptered reference movie from the movies I have created. Not sure if this means you found the proper folder and it was empty or if it means you didn't know how to open the project package files. Not knowing your level of experience, will assume the latter for the moment.
    1) Locate your iMovie project file
    2) Control-mouse click on the icon
    3) Mouse click the "Show Package Contents" option in the windw that opens
    4) Double-click the "Shared Movies" folder to open it
    5) Double-click the "iDVD" folder to open it
    6) Double-click the reference MOV file that represents your current iMovie timeline to open it in the QT Player
If your iMovie timeline contains a chaptered movie/clip segment, the the QT Player should be displaying it with the chapter feature at this time. (Try selecting chapters at random in the chapter pop-up list to ensure the feature is working correctly.)
Is there a way to save the movie from imovie to quicktime with the chapters that is not so huge?If by this you are asking if it is possible to convert the movie to a new format with a much smaller file size (and/or display dimensions) and retain the chapter track, then the answer is no (as far as I know). However, you can extract the chapter data from the reference file described above and apply it to such a converted file.
I also can't find a way to save a text file from imovie. Could you explain a bit more?I personnally would recommend use of a third-party utility to do this -- Metadata Hootenanny 1.1.4 (free) -- if you are using a PPC G5 here. The following would be a typical workflow when using this utility:
    1) Export your chaptered movie from iMovie to your desired format (e.g., "Movie to iPod") in the normal manner
    2) Open Metadata Hootenanny and drop the iMovie reference file onto the "Library/Playlist" work area
    3) Press the "Open Book" icon to switch to the "Chapters" area to view chaptering data
    4) Press the "Save to Text File..." button the save the chapter data
    5) Press the "List" icon to return to the "Library/Playlist" area
    6) Delete/Clear the reference file from the list
    7) Drop your converted target file to the "Library/Playlist" area
    8) Press the "Open Book" icon to switch to the "Chapters" area again
    9) Ensure "Scale Chapters from Files" and "Allow Editing Chapter Times" options are set
    10) Press the "Open File" button and load the chaper text file saved above
    11) Test capter markers using he integrated media player and adjust frames/chapters if required
    12) Return to the "Library/Playlist" area, sace the chaptered file, clear the list, and quit
    13) Open the Movie in the QT Player, test chapters, set presentation options if desired, add graphic and set as poster frame if desired, deselect any active selected area if desired, reset play head to beginning of movie if needed, and use "Save As..." to rename final movie/reset "fast start" option as desired if destined for web use.
Am currrently busy working on a project so I can't prepare a better example of this work flow, but here is a LINK to an older sample file made in this manner.

  • Compression from imovie to quicktime

I am compressing a movie from iMovie 7.1.4 to quicktime 7.6.
The compression seems to work relatively fine except that a random clip from the middle of the movie always shows up as the opening clip of the compressed version. When I play the QT version, this clip does not play but still shows up. In other words, how to I ensure that the compressed version starts exactly at the beginning of the movie?
How do I prevent this from happening.
    Thanks!

If you are happy with the QT clip otherwise and assuming you have QT Pro just select the offending part and cut it out then save as which will save the movie in a new file without reencoding or compressing, and minus the part you don't want. How it got there, no idea.

  • Compressing HD Movie into Quicktime Movie

Im trying to compress a movie i made with imovie HD into Quicktime Movie but it always fail, iMovie HD is not responding... i was able to compress it into Mpg & AVI so I dont understand why I cant compress it into quicktime... anyone ?

Are you storing your projects on a hard drive formatted as FAT32? FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB.

  • How can you get your iPhone videos to compress to one video instead of 5 different frames?

How can you get your iPhone videos to compree to one video instead of different frames

It sounds like you to 5 separate videos. If you start recording, then stop it, then start it again, you will have 2 videos. Not 1. As for splicing them together, you will need a video editing package for your PC. I don't know if Windows Movie Maker (or whatever they're calling it now) can handle this or not. On a Mac, I'd say just use iMovie.

  • PSD files always imported as one layer QuickTime

Does anyone know how to work around the bug in DVD SP 4.2.1 that formats every imported PSD file to Quick Time format destroying the layer structure?
No matter if the file has layers or not, no matter if the file is saved in PSD, TIF, JEPG, etc the files appears as Quick Time one layer in DVD SP once imported.
The files generated in PSD (CS4 11.0.1) are 8-bit, RGB, multiple layer or flattend image, standard size, nothing strange.
Several months ago I did a similar work and had no problems.
    What's happening? Any idea?

Did you ever read my reply in post #5?
My suggestion would be to download a trial version of Photoshop, whatever runs on your machine, and use the Image Processor in Photoshop to batch convert all your files as TIFFs before the 30-day trial period is over.

  • One hour video  to 100 megabytes

how can i compress a one our video to 100 megabytes using finalcut.
what kind of file should i export it to??
    what poperties should i use??
this video is to be uploaded to youtube.....
    thanks

Youtube only allows 10 minutes of video unless you a special account.
If you have a normal account you would have to split that up into 6 different videos.
If you do have a special account then realized that 60 minutes compressed down to 100mb it would look so horrible that no one would watch it.

  • 3 hour program - Burn to DVD ?

Can anyone help me please! I need to know if there is a
software program that I can drop a 3 hour QuickTime movie file into and burn it to DVD. This movie is actually being used on a closed cirquit TV. system. There will be 2 different 3 hour movies/DVD's that I need to burn and they need to be produced WITHOUT ANY MENUS. The 2 DVD prgrams will run 24 - 7 and the menu would stop the DVD player from playing continuously. Someone suggested DVD Shrink but, I'm sure if its available for Mac or, if it would work.
I would appreciate any insight anyone might have
    Thank you.

I created the 3 hour programs on Final Cut Pro 5 - exported as QuickTime movies and I do not currently have $600.00 to upgrade to Final Cut Studio. I had to replace my G4 recently and upgrade to FCP 5. So It's not in my budget. Also, I thought this was a question that only professional video producers would know the answer to or possibly a work around. I don't think to many professional video producers are discussing there problems on the iDVD board. So... if you know of any creative work arounds I would appreciate hearing them. There is probably not a lot of people that need to burn 3 hour DVD's with NO menu.
