1st Generation iMac G5 shuts off all of a sudden

My iMac G5 keeps shutting off all of a sudden. Also when I turn it on it shuts off 2 out of 3 times in about 5 secs. anyone have any ideas on whether this is a hardware or a software problem?
I had the power supply replaced through the warranty agreement about 2 yrs ago.

I too have a rev a imac and I too had problems a year ago, with kernel panics and sudden shutdowns. I took it for repair after noticing capacitors bulging and leaking, just to the right of the power socket. The bad capacitors had "x" on the bottom. I was told the mid plane had been replaced and everything seemed to be ok.
Guess what?
3 days ago, it started happening again.
Just now I had a look in the back, and surprise, surprise, there are bulging and leaking capacitors, this time to the left of the power socket. Again the leaking capacitors are ones with "x" on the bottom. All the other capacitors have a "y" on the bottom.
I suggest you take the back off your imac and visually inspect the capacitors.
i am very very annoyed at this situation.
The las fault occured when my imac was 11.5 months old, so I panicked and paid for Applecare. Then I found out that the warranty had been extended on all rev a imacs. Now my imac is one month short of 3 years old, and again this is happenign just before my apple care runs out.
This does not give me any faith in the future of my imac.

  • 1st Generation iMac G5 with new main logic board but now no Bluetooth?

    Greetings:
As an owner of a 1st generation iMac, I can finally report that my iMacG G5 is now working fine since the main logic board has been replaced because of bad capacitors.
A NEW problem has been created. My internal bluetooth no longer works and is not visible in the hardware profile. I suspect that the Apple repair center may have removed my module or that it was attached to the old main logic board. On PC's running MS Windows (XP), there is a "hardware detect" routine.
QUESTION: Can anyone tell me if the internal module is visible by taking the cover off? I cannot seem to find a photo of where or how the module is attached. I can see my Airport module. Regardless, the Apple repair center said to simply bring it back in and they would fix the problem. They indicated that it was a simple software fix. After trying many different software techniques, I still believe they somehow forgot that my computer had BT and it went back with my old logic board.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jeff

We discovered the problem. After taking my iMac G5 back to the Apple service center, I got to observe the technician remove my G5 cover and bluetooth module.
The problem was due to the fact that the initial technician apparently did not realize he/she broke off the very small connecting pins on the module when he/she removed it from the original main logic board with the bad capacitors. They simply screwed it on the main logic board. They order a new BT module to replace the broken one.
FYI: It is very easy to install the BT module on the main logic board as I observed. No soldering, etc.. The location is directly above the power supply but below the airport card. It is about the size of a postage stamp and is in clear view withou removing any parts.
    Thanks to All....Miriam...

  • 1st generation iMac G5 won't start up with LaCie connected

Sorry if this has been asked a zillion times, but I am trying to help a friend (as you can see it is not my iMac):
She has a 1st generation iMac G5, and a LaCie external harddisk connected by firewire. The LaCie has an independent power supply, i.e. not powered by firewire.
Her iMac starts up fine when the LaCie is NOT connected, but refuses to do so when it is. This problem did not always exist.
Does anyone have the answer - better still a cure?!

Is the LaCie on and showing on the desktop when she shuts down? It's always a good idea to eject FW drives before shutting down, and to start up with them unplugged, otherwise data corruption can occur.

  • How do i go wirelss with a 1st generation imac that is not airport enabled?

    Hi there
Does anyone know if it possible to go wireless with a 1st generation imac that is not airport extreme enabled?
    Thanks for your help

It's not a bridge. It is simply a ethernet to 802.11G adapter. It is just a different way of adding wireless to a Mac.
The Airport Extreme card is just $49 and it is internal. It is not hard to add at all to your first gen G5 iMac so I would go that way.

  • IMac Retina shuts off USB ports when sleeping

I have a new iMac Retina i7 with 32GB RAM running Yosemite. Approximately 60% percent of the time, when the iMac goes to sleep, it shuts off all of the USB ports. This includes dumping hard drives without properly ejecting them, as well as shutting off powered USB hubs. Switching the drives and hubs around to different ports does not help the problem, and it appears to be becoming more frequent. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I too am having hub issues with my 5K iMac. I purchased an Amazon Basics hub, that never worked at all. I returned it and got one made by vantec. I have two external hard drives connected to it, and they always are recognized after sleep or restart. But other things get dropped, like my two printers. I seem to be able to resolve the dropped hub ports by ejecting my external hard drives and then unplugging the power to the hub, then reconnecting the power. When i do, all the indicator lights come on again, and things work.
I am working with Vantec about this issue, they have been terrific by email, and they are offering to replace the hub. But now I am wondering if something more basic is wrong, like this SMC reset that has been mentioned in this thread. I was about to ask if that was hard to do, but I just looked at the link provided by Ralph, and doing it is easy-peasy. I will give this a try, and try to remember to report back.
    thanks, Peter

  • How can I shut off all of the pop-up windows for all the Firefox updates?

How can I shut off all of the pop-up windows for all the Firefox and Thunderbird updates?
Apparently now Mozilla creates new versions of their browser and email apps every two weeks instead of just creating updates... I'm tired of all of the pop-up requests for these constant installation requests and all the problems that the new version installations create... I just want to use the software and be left alone.
I can't find a way to make Firefox and Thunderbird stop with the pop-up requests for new installations... is there a way to do this or has Mozilla just got it rigged so one can't just use the software without re-installing a new version every two weeks and running in to new plugin issues and missing features every time?
    Help!
    Thanks,
    numetro

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro shutting off all by itself

Early 2011 MacBook Pro 11" shutting off all by itself recently.
I had the logic board replaced 11 months ago because it started to shut off more and more until it refused to boot up again.
Now I am going through the same problem. Is this common?

    OK, in that case:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion will not solve the problem.

  • IMac G5 shuts off by himself

    hello everybody,
I have an iMAC G5 20' and I just update the system with Tiger X.4.7 a week ago and since then my iMac is shutting off abruptely by himself without any warnings. It happens two times last week and tonight it happens twice.
The overall temperature of the Mac seems correct
Anyone has any idea ? I already saw that some MAc Book users seems to have the same problem !
Any comments ? Thanks for your help
    Jipes

    Hi, Jipes.
Could be a power supply problem or an issue with mains power: assure the power cord is connected properly to the computer and mains power, and that the power cord is undamaged. Try a different power socket. If you use a UPS, be sure the battery is good.
As far as general iMac G5 troubleshooting goes:
    1. See if your computer's serial number is in the range specified in the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" document.
    2. Rule out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer. For additional details, see my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
    3. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
    4. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
    5. See also the iMac Service & Support site.
    6. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
    7. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    8. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.
    Good luck!

  • My 27inch iMac automatically shuts off

My 27 inch iMac will shut off automatically after about 30 to 45 minutes - it will not turn on when using the on/off power button.  I have to unplug from the wall, hold down the on/off power button for 10 seconds, plug it back into the wall then usually, it will turn on.  I have tried using different wall outlets and not using a power strip but unless i follow the previous steps, it will not turn on. I ran an apple diagnostic test - it showed no issues with the hardware.  It was purchased from the apple refurbished store in April of 2013.  For hardware -processor 3.2 GHZ quad core intel core i5 - memory 8GB 1600MHz DDR3,  graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX  -software - OS X, iLife '11

I think you should have received a 1 year warranty on this Mac, so I would take it in and have them fix it for free. If this is happening routinely at about the same time after boot up it sounds like an overheating issue, which is most likely hardware related.

  • The fan on my iMac never shuts off?

The fan on my iMac never shuts off? Would someone be able to suggest what is the probable cause of this and what can I do about it?

Sometimes an SMC reset can help resolve this. If it fixes it but proves to be temporary a trip to the workshop may be needed:

  • Iphone 6 shutting off all the time

I've had an original iphone and an iphone 4 that the genius bar helpers were always very easy to work with and always gave me the right of hand when i needed a replacement.
This iphone 6 has been a nightmare, I've had it for less then one month and even after it being restored it kept SHUTTING OFF all the time!!!! I explained this to the rep.
However as a misfortune, the day I had scheduled my appointment the phone fell from my computer desk and shattered
Even with the 22 reported crashes I was still forced to pay $83 dollars to get a replacement refurbished phone!!!!
I have apple care, att insurance, and none of that crap covered the phone that was obviously defective due to its cosmetics.
this was absurd and I am very upset with apple and especially with the way the genius bar is now, inconsiderate with the public, not only do i get a piece of crap refurbish phone, this one is STILL SHUTTING OFF ALL THE TIME.
Anyone else having their iphone 6 shutting off constantly???

Update it to 8.1 and see if that helps. Otherwise Restore it as a new iPhone, not from your backup, and see if that helps. If it does you have an app that is misbehaving. You could also have a nanoSIM that needs to be replaced.

Can I shut off all sounds and leave on just one distinctive ring?
When I go to sleep I'd like to leave my phone near me.  I don't want to get any sounds from it, except the ring from the nursing home where my mother lives.  Everything else can wait until morning.  Can I do this on an Iphone 6 or 5?
Upon awakening, I'll reset to get all the sounds.

On one of my operator's forum I've received help. On adapter, in Line section (the one where I don't wanna hear ringtone when my numeber is called) I set DND Settings:Yes (which stands for Do Not Disturb). This makes my phone completely silent and I can make calls (the line must be registered, in the other case Make Calls Without Registration must be On).
I'm still curious what's going on with Distinctive Ring Patterns since my phone has only melodies as ringtones, though (is this function useful in this case?)
    Anyway, thanks for your intentions.
    cheers
