2.2 and ical syncing

I have 2 ipod touches that I updated to 2.2. They are both synced to ical on my powerbook G4 (OS 10.5.5) and after updating they do not sync properly -- nothing seems to be transferred to or from ical on the computer but if I sync both touches to the computer their calendars will be synced to one another BUT NOT TO ICAL! Any ideas how to fix this? Everything worked fine before the update to 2.2.

Kevin,
Tell us a bit more about what you want to do. See each other's calendars? Edit shared calendars?
For iCal, a .Mac account allows you to literally sync calendars which each user can edit. It also of course allows you to publish calendars, have an off site backup, and access the calendars from any internet accessible computer.
A .Mac account is the only way to share jointly editable calendars. If all you want to do is "Publish" an "Subscribe" (ie see each other's calendars) you could publish to a webDAV server such as:
http://www.icalx.com/
or
http://www.icalshare.com/
icalx offers some security
If simply sharing locally is enough then there is icaltalk:
http://pknet.com/~joe/caltalk.html
This works with Users on the same network or even on the same computer.
The creators of calSync X (iToast) have essentially disappeared so use this with that in mind.

  • IPhone and iCal sync via iTunes - calendars appear on IPhone not in iCal

Hi, i hope that someone out there may have encountered and resolved this.
Basically I am trying to sync my iPhone 3G with iCal using iTunes as the sync tool. I have partial success in that my iCal calendar entries can be found within my iPhone BUT the reverse is not true, my iPhone calendar is showing in iCal - I would expect to see within the calendar list something like "on my iPhone" (although never having done this before i may be completely wrong!).
I should add that my iPhone is a company phone synced to Outlook over the air, iTunes tells me this, but it doesn't tell me that i can't do a Sync with my iMac.
    Any help welcomed.

This doesn't help you, but I just recently started having the same problem, I just upgraded my 3G to 4.0 in iTunes so I don't know if that has anything to do with it but nothing on my phones calendar will sync to iCal. Events in iCal sync to the computer just fine thought. I hope someone can help me figure this out!

  • Mail and iCal Syncing Headaches

I do not have a .Mac account. So I can't figure out why I have to wait for what can amount to twenty seconds or so each time I launch Mail while it goes through what it says is: "Registering syncing prefs with .Mac." Mail often won't display a message or let me create a new one, and will not quit until it finally decides there's nothing to sync with. It's a pain in the a**.
On a similar note, even if I don't create any new entries or make any changes, but just to look at my calendar, iCal wants to sync with SOMETHING before IT will quit.
These issues, of course, aren't new. They've been happening all along. And that's why I'm puzzled as to why my Mac isn't smart enough to know that there's nothing to sync with. There should at least be an OPTION to turn syncing OFF. Completely. Egad, I hate to say it, but it's almost as annoying as some Windows issues.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi BDAqua and Carolyn...
My OS X came configured with the .Mac preference pane in System Preferences beginning with whatever release of OS X offered it, but I did not subscribe to it, as I had no need. However, Mail and iCal had been attempting to sync from day one. Never knowing why, it eventually began to annoy me. So much so, that at one point, I removed the .Mac preference pane - AND every file I could find related to .Mac - but the attempt by Mail and iCal to sync persisted (I don't have iDisk or, at least, it's not in my Applications folder).
What makes this annoying is that while Mail attempts to sync, it prevents me from switching mailboxes and displaying or composing a message. iCal just sits there. I can't even hide iCal while it needlessly churns away.
I put the .Mac preference pane back where it belonged earlier this year and subscribed ONLY for the purpose of transferring files from my G4 dekstop to my MacBook, as instructed by an Apple support person. I've since discovered on my own that I could have done the transfer much more simply and quickly using a firewire cable; thank you, Apple support person.) Once the transfer was completed, I made sure to turn any and all syncing preferences off, and I've let my .Mac account expire. But my username and password remained in the .Mac preference pane, until I just now deleted them, at Carolyn's suggestion. Prior to doing that, the .Mac preference pane confirmed that my account had expired 206 days ago.
Before beginning this paragraph, I launched iCal and moved an item from yesterday to day and then Quit. iCal still spent a few seconds attempting to sync (perhaps to the phases of the moon, or the Fall TV season, I don't know). However, Mail - upon launching at this point - seems to only check the appropriate servers. I did see the syncing message, but only for a split second.
Am I to believe that even though my .Mac account had expired long ago, just the fact that my username and password remained in the preference pane was enough for these applications to continue sync attempts? That would seem odd to me; since 1986 my Macs have been smarter than that.
Thank you both, BDAqua and Carolyn, very much. I'll wait just a while before I call this problem... err, annoyance solved.
UPDATE: Just before beginning THIS note, I launched Mail again, and it still attempted to "Register syncing prefs with .Mac," but only for a couple of seconds. I just don't understand.
    But, thanks again.

  • Iphone and ical syncing issues

My iphone 3GS seems to be creating double all of the ical entries? I have recently updated to the new mobileme calendar but this was happening just before also.
I enter ical events on both my mac book pro and my iphone. Ical does not double the events but the iphone does.
Anyone else had this issue or know what could be causing it??
    Cheers.

There's a whole "encyclopedia" in these forums about this problem. Suggest you search here for something like "iCal event duplication" and you should find a good bit of helpful information.
That said, I had similar problems with my iPhone 3G and then my iPhone 4, and it basically came down to MobileMe issues. My best advice would be to look first to see whether or not the calendar on your MBP agrees with the one on MobileMe - I'm betting you'll find issues there for which the phone is just a display medium. It will probably be necessary for you to reset your sync data and clean out either the iCal data or the data in MM Calendar.

  • Can I sync my iPhone calendar with exchange server AND ical on my mac ?

I have been happily using my iPhone synced with my Macbook over usb via iTunes.
I have contacts and iCal syncing. I have a number of 'calendars' set up in iCal which allow me to view separate aspects of home and work but they all exist within iCal. iPhone just treats these as colour coded appointments (different colour for each ical calendar)
I really like this set up.
However, I just changed jobs to a firm where they have a hosted outlook exchange set up and I need to use the exchange calendar for work appointments and showing my availability.
I have managed to setup my iPhone to work with the Exchange server for email as well as in apple Mail on my mac. This has all worked fine. However, I hesitated when iPhone asked if i wanted to sync my contacts and calendar. I said no as I was unsure if my private calendar/contacts would be uploaded to the public work area.
In fact it seems that this is the least of my worries:
As I have read on apple support for iPhone:
"Note that after configuring an Exchange ActiveSync account, all existing contact and calendar information on the iPhone or iPod touch is overwritten. Additionally, iTunes no longer syncs contacts and calendars with your desktop computer. You can still sync your iPhone or iPod touch wirelessly with MobileMe services."
So I am really pleased that I didn't let it sync those and wipe out my personal data if that is really true.
But now I am unsure how best to enable myself to view and update the work calendar on exchange.
Also it would be nice to see work contacts on my iPhone.
    Contacts
    - although i have said no to sync contacts with Exchange in fact it looks like I can get contacts ok - when i send email from the Exchange account on the phone , it searches Exchange contacts on the server as i type in the TO box.
    - also in Contacts on the iPhone I have a new group that has been created with the name of my Exchange account. The group appears to be blank when you go into it on the phone, but you can type in the search box and get contact details from the server just fine.
This seems workable for now for my purposes, although updating contacts is not going to be possible that way.
I'd like more info on that if poss but more importantly..
    Calendar
    - Unlike Contacts, no Calendar has been auto created for Exchange
    - Unlike contacts, I can't see how I can view or search or create an appointment in my Exchange calendar on the iPhone
What is the best solution to this problem - I presume lots of people face the same dilemma. My initial research suggests that there are multiple ways round this but all of them look like workarounds with various disavantages.
    Questions are
    - Can't I just set up Exchange as one of my calendars in ical?
    - Is it really true that I have to choose between syncing Exchange with work server OR syncing iCal with personal Macbook?
    - What is the best work around for this?
At the moment I am seriously considering getting a separate iPhone for work and have that sync with Exchange fully although that seems a bit drastic and does not solve the problem of seeing work and home appointments on the same calendar.

Can't I just set up Exchange as one of my calendars in ical?
Only if you're running Snow Leopard and your employer will allow access (different than iPhone/mobile device access, so most likely not), but not needed - keep reading.
Is it really true that I have to choose between syncing Exchange with work server OR syncing iCal with personal Macbook?
No. It was true, but with the v3.0 software that changed - you can now sync your Exchange contacts and calendar over the air, and your Address Book and iCal via iTunes over the docking cable.
What is the best work around for this?
None needed. When you set up the exchange account, and choose to turn on syncing of contacts and calendars, you will be prompted to remove all other data, or keep it on the iPhone. Choose the keep option. Note that in that case, your personal data will not be uploaded to the Exchange server - the iPhone keeps them separate (although you can choose to view them in a merged fashion).
I have this set up on my phone (Exchange calendar along side personal and other calendars from iCal). Same for contacts. Works great.

  • ICal syncing issues

Hi - can anyone help me....
I have a Macbook Pro at home, an iMac at my office, and an iPhone in my pocket. I cannot, for the life of me, get the calendars to sync properly. On my laptop I have appointments that do not appear on my iPhone (very frustrating) and sometimes things that I add to my iCal on the iMac don't appear on either the iPhone or the Macbook. Also the reminders are a nightmare. Because I often leave both computers running all the time if a reminder appears on one of the machines it remains there until I am beside that machine to be able to either delay it or cancel it. Therefore this means that further reminders on other devices don't come up and sometimes I miss things I supposed to do.
    Two more questions (sorry):
Is it possible to add postponement time options to the drop down that appears when a reminder comes up on the screen. The choices are somewhat limited, they go in nice stages up to two hours, then the next choice is one day! Sometimes I want a reminder in four or eight hours but to do that I need to just keep going in increments of two hours which occasionally leads to the problems referred to above.
Secondly, when a reminder comes up in the iPhone whilst it is being used (i.e. on a call) you have a choice of either close or open appointment. Does close mean that it just closes it from what you are doing or does that mean that it cancels the ongoing reminder? Similarly when you click the other option there seems to be no obvious way postpone the reminder for another few hours.......??
    Sorry to be so long-winded
    Darren

  • Sync iphone with ical, sync iphone with ical

How do i sync my iPhone with iCal on my Mac?
FYI I DO NOT want to use iCloud because MobileMe NEVER worked right for me.

    Dear Ferd II,
Thanks for your pointout. It worked for me, though not the first time. I had my iTunes sync prefs set to sync automatically upon iPhone connection, but you can't access the "info" tab until it's connected. So my first time thru, I tried to click "replace calendar on iPhone one time from Mac" and then hit the "apply" button WHILE the sync was already in progress. It didn't like that, so I suggest to set those prefs in iTunes FIRST, then export and import the calenders along with the remove sync history via iSync, as per the instructions in the link you gave. My second time thru, using the prefs already preset, it all worked fine, and now the iPhone and iCal sync in both directions again.
    Awesome.

  • Sync problem through iTunes between iOS devices and iCal

This is a mess and has been troubling me for months. Please help!
    ***Devices:
    iPhone 5, iOS current
    iPad 1, iOS current
    MacBook Pro 10.7.current, iCal (2.8 ghz ICD2)
    ***Sync setup:
I have and have used a MobileMe account but made sure both iPhone and iPad were set for *no* calendar sync. There's no sync checkbox for Calendar sync with the MobileMe Systems Preferences (there was in earlier versions). For the sake of thoroughness I went into MobileMe via it's web interface and deleted each calendar (creating a "tossme" calendar with no events in it because Mme requires one calendar). I signed out / sign back in periodically because I was getting errors occasionally. The online Mme Calendar is completely empty as far as I can see.
After a sync (for backup) I unchecked the Info > Calendar box and agreed to delete all events on the iPhone and the iPad. That wiped off whatever was on the iPad and the iPhone. Then I re-checked all calendars for both devices, setting them to not sync events over 30 days. The calendars on both the iPhone and the iPad now had events from the iCal calendars on my MBkP. But the iPad and iPhone calendars *also* had a few events not on the MBkP: They had "New Event" from when I created an even not he iCal calendar and then renamed and / or changed the calendar for that even. They *also* had the blank and default New Event.
    ***Test events
I then went to each device in turn and created an event at 4 PM today in the default calendar called, respectively, from iPad, from iPhone, from MBkP ical. I then synced both the iPad and iPhone through iTunes as usual. What happened is *exactly* what's been happening for about 6 months. Here was what was on each device after a successful sync:
MBkPro: Only the "from MBkP iCal" event and no other of these test events.
iPhone: Four events: New Event, from MBkP iCal, from iPhone, from iPad
iPad: exactly the same events as the iPhone has.
I then deleted *all* of the four events *just* from the iPhone and synced these devices in this specific order: iPhone, iPad.
After the deletion inn the iPhone and the since I end up with this: Just the from MBkP iCal on all three devices.
    ***Conclusions:
    These devices sync but
--the MBkP *only one way*, that is *to* the iPhone and iPad, including (annoyingly) every iteration of an event instead of the final form of an event (hence every "new event"….)
--Both the iPad and iPhone sync all events back and forth amongst themselves and take as separate events every stage of any event *from* the MBkP iCal but nothing *to* the iCal on the MBkP. (This generates lots of other dups, by the way…I'm outlining the simplest case here.)
    ***Other stuff I've tried
Back when I could get iCal to sync calendars / events with Mme I using that as a conduit for sync between the three (i.e.: telling iTunes to ignore calendar syncing). And a bunch of other stuff. Same result.
I've examined lots of settings repeatedly. No change.
    ***What I want:
I'd like all three of these devices to
--sync as equals--each of them to sync their calendars / events back and forth (i.e.: the iCal on MBkP taking events from both the iPad and iPhone).
--Each of them to only have the most recently modified version of an event.
--ideally (but not as important) a copy of all these calendars and evens on the web-based MobileMe calendar (although I recall hearing that Apple is phasing out this function).
(Note that I rarely post here, please e-mail me at [email protected] if you comment here. Or does this system notify me automatically of any comments?)

    I'm having the same issue.
It started when I updated the iOS 7 on my Iphone 5 and my ipad mini and downloaded de iTunes 11.1.
Now I can't sync my playlists all at once or even in few selections of playlists, because it gets stucked on fourth step "waiting for changes to be applied" and after some minutes the sync simbol disappear on iphone and continues on iTunes, but it does nothing.
I also left an entire night to see if the problem was slowness to sync, but it did nothing, it really gets stucked. I've also tried a few different ways to sync (restart, reset, clean logs), but it doesn't work and it isn't allowing me to sync a couple of playlists in a row. Sometimes even a single playlist is not syncing.
I believe a new iTunes release it will be required

  • IPad, iCal and iTunes sync problem

Early last year, I posted (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18503738#18503738) that syncing between my iPad 3 and my Snow Leopard iMac behaved oddly.  AppleCare Support dweebs had failed to resolve the issue and no one on here managed to come up with any suggested fix.
However, for no apparent reason, the problem stopped and I stopped monitoring this august and highly esteemed forum and all went well ...
    ... until recently.
I sync via a USB cable and I do not use iCloud (as I'm on Snow Leopard) save for Find My iPad, all other iCloud options are switched off.  All other app syncing appears to work correctly, it is only iCal and Calendars that don't.
Just why things have started to go wrong now, probably in the last three or four weeks, I do not know but now the following syncing errors occur ...
    1) On the iPad: new appointments or changes to appointments made on the iPad are not synced to the iMac;
    2) On the iMac, changes to appointments already on the iMac are shown on the iPad as both the new and old timings/details, not as replacements;
    3) On the iMac, new appointments are made in the default (or last) calendar used.  These are then edited as required, with the details put in and, if necessary, calendars changed.  On the iPad, however, these will show as both "New event" in the default calendar and as the edited correct appointment, not just as the finalised entry;
    4) Appointments deleted from the iMac are not deleted from the iPad.
In other words, changes on the iPad are not synced across to the iMac and changes on the iMac are synced twice, once as the unedited appointment and once as the edited appointment - if an appointment is deleted it remains on the iPad.
When the original problem arose (similar but not identical) the Apple dweebs suggested deleting my iCloud account (not synced, used only for Find My iPad) but doing that this time does not remove the bug.
I'm running a 27" quad-core i7 iMac under MacOSX.6.8 (Build 10K549), iCal v4.0.4 (1395.7) and I sync via USB  and iTunes v11.0.2 (26).  The iPad is a 64GB 4G/wifi iPad 3, currently running under under iOS6.1.3.  To the best of my knowledge, all available updates have been applied to both devices.
I have deleted all calendars off the iPad by deselecting Calendars in iTunes' iPad tab, turned it off.  Swicthed off the iMac, Safe Booted and run OnyX full suite, I have then Single User booted, run fsck -fy three times then run applejack AUTO restart, then rebooted the iMac, rebooted the iPad, sync'd without Calendars then resynced with the Calendars selected again.
I had hoped that this would remove any cache files, temporary files, stuck RAM or whatever else could conceivably be causing this bizarre behaviour - to no bl**dy avail!  It is behaving exactly and frustratingly as before!
What on earth is going on?  if I can't use my iPad as my main calendar and add new appointments when out and about and have them synced properly and reliably to my iMac then the whole thing is a waste of time andI shall have to revert to a paper diary again!
HELP!!!!! Please, before I go mad with frustration!

I'm not sure whether getting no replies to this (or the earlier) query is something of which to be proud - or terrified!
Am I the only person in the world with this bizarre insoluble problem?  if so, why me?  Am I a Chosen One or, more likely, someone to be punished for a lifetime of misdeeds!
But there is progress.  I have no idea what happened at a technical level or why, but the matter has now resolved itself and things are syncing normally.  Until the next time!
Perhaps there is a clue somewhere in the following ...
I run my iMac 24/7 and thus I rarely close iCal on the iMac and when i do it is usually by accident.  The same applies to Calendars on the iPad, although I do reboot from time to time.
Anyway, I installed some software on the iMac which required a reboot and, as susual, iCal opened via Preferences > Accounts > Startup items - only this time I was presented with a perfectly blank calendar.  A message appeared, from within iCal (oh, how I wish i had noticed what it actually said) saying something along the lines of "importing calendars".  This took a little while and it wasn't instant - maybe it does this every time it reatrts but too fast for me to notice.
After this "import", if indeed that's what it was, the syncing was corrected!
Coincidence?  Cause and effect?  Magic?  Too many magic mushrooms for breakfast?
If that is what resolved the issue, then how can I cause an import deliberately for when the syncing goes astray again and just what does an "import" do that a normal launch doesn't and which might have resolved the glitch?
I have had this "import" message before, but very very rarely, so it may well have resolved the syncing issue last time and I just didn't make the possible connection.
Does that help anyone come to my rexcue with an explanation and, possibly, a strategy for preventing or deliberatly correcting syncing issues in the future?

  • ICal syncing from desktop to iPhone and iPad is a nightmare

I have a mid-2011 MBA running Mountain Lion, an iPhone 5C, and an iPad 2.
I use the Lightning add-on for Thunderbird for a calendar, but it is buggy. I really want to go back to iCal so I can have my calendar on my phone and on my iPad, but syncing is a nightmare. I cannot find any plain language information on the rationale behind why syncing works the way it does so that I can figure out how to make it work correctly.
    What I want:
iCal desktop to be my primary calendar and to sync all updates to my iPad and iPhone. If I add an update on my iPad or iPhone, I want it to show up on iCal the next time I connect my device to the computer.
    What actually happens:
iCal desktop is the secondary calendar. Anything that happens on the iPad and iPhone is more important. If I add an iCal event on the desktop app while I am connected to my iPhone and iPad, the events I create disappear because they do not exist on the iPad and iPhone. If I create them when the devices are not connected, when I do connect I either lose the events or they get triplicated.
I do not use iCloud to sync, only iTunes by checking 'sync calendars.' I have given up on ever making iCloud syncing work for anything. Last time I tried it, it just deleted all my books, music, movies, etc. (thank goodness for Time Machine backups) and quadrupled all my calendar events...
Can someone please take pity on me and explain how to make syncing

Can't edit posts for some reason and my post got truncated.

  • Entourage Tasks and iCal "To dos" have disappeared during sync with .Mac

All of my “tasks” (both completed and incomplete) in Entourage and "to dos" iCal have disappeared, apparently during a sync with dot Mac. This problem has happened twice in the past two weeks (the first time I lost all of my Entourage “notes” too, but I haven’t put any back).
The tasks show no problems for a week and then all of a sudden disappear from both Entourage and iCal. My calendar and address book (which I also sync) seem not to be affected. Entourage doesn’t seem to offer a way to sync the calendar without syncing the tasks as well.
    Here are my questions:
    Why did my tasks disappear?
How do I prevent their disappearance again?
has anyone else experienced this problem?
My Entourage database is fine. I’m running Entourage 11.2.3 (which rencently added a feature "sync services" that allows syncing with .Mac and iCal).

I had the same problem and I got my To Dos to appear when I clicked on the To Dos by Priority column header and checked/unchecked the Hide Items outside Calendar View option. (Doesn't seem to make any difference whether it is checked or unchecked ... it displays all of the items ... at least until restart iCal ... then it is a bit unpredictable.)
I also have intermittent problems when I create or change a new Event. Sometimes the change does not appear until I move off the page that I am displaying and come back (e.g. move forward a week in week view and then back.)
