You are limited to editing in standard video and film formats. The film formats that are 2k and 4k do not have to be 16:9. You can see this in the custom project properties.

  • Quicktime X and 7 aspect ratio problems

    I have scoured the net and not come up with a single solution to this issue.
    I have hundreds of music videos, home videos etc in Quicktime 7 format. The ratio of these files varies at a pixel level, but are corrected in Q7 size feature.
    It's not just an anamorphic issue, as many videos are cropped from a non anamorphic 4:3 'letter boxed' source.
    Now QX does not display them correctly at all, which until recently wasn't the end of the world, but from the last update, iTunes began using the X ratio as opposed to the correct adjusted ratio, so music videos in iTunes, QX, the iPad, you name it, the videos created this way do not display correctly.
    That basically is every video on my Mac created from the late 90's to recently.
    Any ideas, solutions? How on earth can Apple do something so amateurish, and why is there no major uproar.

    Not exactly. I believe that what they are saying is that QT is growing old. The technology on which is is based was fine for the codecs and techniques of its time, but video technology is constantly changing and it is no longer practical or possible to keep making updates and patches that don't, in and of themselves, create new, more serious problems than they solve. QT X is based on technology designed to make this process of evolution easier and it is likely we will see many new changes over the coming decade. However, in the meantime, they have not done away with QT 7 or Front Row, both of which continue to display your files correctly even under Snow Leopard. I personally continue to use QT 7—mainly because I have it keyed for "Pro" use and prefer its functionality to the what I call "Not quite ready for prime time" version represented by QT X which likely appeals to first time Mac users.
    New videos are fine, I just encode them to square pixels anyway and ignore any PAR nonsense at the encode stage, but then if the PAR value is what they are using now, why not allow an option in QX to set that, so at the very least I could resize the old videos to correct format.
    Not sure if Apple would be willing to provide what amounts to developmental support for an application they are phasing out. Still, it wouldn't hurt to ask. If enough people should request such an enhancement, they might be willing to at least consider the possibility.
    Re-encoding them is just not an option, incurring further loss, on videos that in some cases are already marginal.
    While I stated that corrections are normally made during the encoding process, it isn't the only method of setting the PAR value. Unfortunately, it is the most accurate method.
    My point with anamorphic is that it will simply change 4:3 to 16:9 if there were some option to hit a check button.
    Actually, using modern encoders, you can utilize any custom PAR setting desired but I am usually more interested in other aspect ratios like 1.66:1, 1.85:1, 2.40:1, and 2.35:1 since most of my work is centered on the conversion of movies for use on my TV devices.
    More flexibility is needed, especially from a platform that is supposed to be pro. Ever tried formatting videos for a vertically placed Plasma for exhibition work, on a video file that isn't square pixel?
    Not as uncommon as you might think. I also layer over still or video backgrounds to frame the main video and fill the unused device display area.
    I have videos for example that are 800 x 400 (due to an original source, or a crop from the source, but view at 4:3 with the size setting, as they should. Now they look ridiculous displaying at 2:1, and there is no way to change it.
    I would normally employ masking here to avoid one level of re-compression.
    The size option allowed it to be displayed as you wanted it to, after encode.
    More importantly, the Size (Scale) option allowed you to avoid having to re-encode the file since it can be saved back to the original file container (assuming no other changes were made the forces a re-encoding of the file).
    It worked, it was done as Apple wanted, due to the size option being the only way to do to non-square pixels, and now they say, nah, we're not doing that anymore?
    You seem to be forgetting that when QuickTime was initially introduced almost 20 years ago, users did not have to worry about scalability options, low-compression, high data rate broadcast standards or anamorphic DVDs because there weren't any such work flows for the Apple/Mac platforms of that era nor could they handle them anyway.
    So basically Quicktime now contains no ability to format non-square pixels, unless it is done at the encode?
    True, but as hinted previously, Apple and QuickTime isn't the only game in town. Based on your question, I went back and played around with Subler. Had been told that this app would allow the user to embed PAR value but was never able to get it to work. Finally managed to get a 720x480 (636x480) encoded movie trailer to play back as an 852x480 display in both QT 7 and QT X on my Snow Leopard system. This proves that it can be done without re-encoding, but there do seem to be some limitations. For instance, since I normally encode using macro-block 16 dimensions increments and Subler seems to like increments of 12 pixels, some PAR and Size target values may vary by 4 pixels. In any case, you may want to Google the app and give it a try. You still have to process each file but not actually re-compress the data.
    It is barely believable that they would do that.
    Please excuse me, but I do have to chuckle here. It seems as if you feel that Apple has taken something away from you. I, on the other hand, tend to view it as not missing something I never really had. I do, however, agree that it would be nice if both applications were able to access/change both PAR values and display size values for better compatibility between old and new technologies.

  • Aspect Ratio and Pixel Aspect Ratio

    I am importing P2 footage and wondering what my sequence settings should be? As in Aspect Ratio and Pixel Aspect Ratio would need to be? Do I need to ask the DOP what settings on the P2 have been used when filming?

    If you have FCP 6 then when you drop a clip into the timeline it will ask you if you want to configure the sequence to match...just click YES.
    But you should know what format they shot. Find that out then choose the Easy Setup that matches, and make a new sequence. Or let FCP 6 and 7 do that for you, like I mentioned.

    multiple page option in your print dialog will keep aspect ratio but not same scale if you use different page sizes in your original pdf.

  • Labview Remote Panel and Client Aspect Ratio

    Dear all professionals,
    I had create an application with remote panel (webserver) enabled. I found that there is relationship between aspect ratio of client device display and the remote panel screen size. Here i attached two images of remote panel in browser which both remote panel are opened using different aspect ratio of client device. 
    The left 1 is the device with 1.5 aspect ratio while the right 1 is the device with 1.78 aspect ratio. 
    As you can seen from the images, both remote panel are shown in different size. May i ask do i miss something in the remote panel configuration?

    Thank you for your reply. I also notice that the zoom % of browser is one of the issue that caused this behaviour. In the same aspect ratio with server computer( where the application running), changing zoom to 100% will help to fit remote panel that I already set when I developing the remote panel vi. But if for different aspect ratio, no matter how u change the zoom % , it won't fit the frame. I just wondering whether got another solution for this issue or not :-(

  • MBP and HDTV aspect ratio compatibility

    Hi, I have recently bought and HDTV with a 16:9 aspect ratio (768 vertical pixels). When I connect my MBP using the DVI to VGA convertor it stretches the image because the MBP only outputs in 16:10 ratio resolutions. Is this a known limitation or am I missing something.

    fraser123, welcome to the Apple Discussions forum. The MBP can operate an external screen in two different ways. One is called mirror mode, where the same image is presented on both screens, and the other is called extended desktop mode, where the built-in screen and the external screen can display independently of one another. It sounds like your set up may be running in mirror mode. The easiest way to swich between the two modes is to us the F7 key. Alternately, you can turn off display mirroring within the display preferences pane. See if that allows you to access 16:9 resolutions on your TV.

  • How to crop canvas and change aspect ratio?

    I'm working on a project shot with an old camera from the 70s. I used that camera but recorded the signal on my mini dv camera. Now I have a black border on the right side of the image.
    This project is going on the Web, not TV. How can I crop the canvas (and change the aspect ratio) without a black border? I know there's a crop feature in the motion tab, but that results in same aspect ratio with black border. Is this possible?
    (I don't care if the aspect ratio is non-standard, and I don't want to letterbox.)

    If you are going to the web (what means you'll downscale at the end) and you shoot using an old camera, the loss of quality of the upscaling probably means nothing in your final web encoding.
    You can make a test upscaling just some seconds of your movie an encoding it for the web to check the final quality.

  • Exporting 16:9 and retaining aspect ratio

    Hi all.
    I have a 16:9 Pal project and want to export it for iPod (I have checked the iPod forum to no avail).
    When I export the project the picture is squished and is 4:3. I have tried many things but cannot get the desired result - a wide screen iPod movie with black bars top and bottom. Although I know it can be done because I have downloaded iPod movies that appear to be 16:9.
    I will give 10 points to the person who can help me.

    Open your exported movie in Quicktime Pro.
    Select Window->Show Movie Properties or <command>J.
    In the list at top of the Properties window, select the Video Track.
    Click the Visual Settings tab.
    Uncheck the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" checkbox.
    In Scaled size you see the Horizontal x Vertical size in pixels. Multiply the Vertical number by 16 and divide by 9. Enter the result in the Horizontal box and hit return. Example: original scaled size = 720 x 486. New values are 864 x 486 (720 x 16/9 = 864).
    You'll immediately see the aspect ratio of the movie change. Save the file.
    You're done.

  • Changed sequence settings to match source footage but only half footage now matches even though they're from the same camera and same aspect ratio

    My source footage is 1920 X 1080 from a canon 60D. I changed my sequence settings to Digital SLR 1920 X 1080 to match. On the program window I have it set at "Fit". Only about a quarter of my footage now fits the program screen and looks to be the matching aspect ratio. The rest of the footage when on "fit" fills a tiny portion of the viewing window so it appears they don't match the sequence settings. I don't understand why this is happening because this footage is from the same camera, shot the same day, and have the same aspect ratios.
    Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it??

    First of all, the setting that you mention is on Fit is the Zoom Level of the Program Monitor. It controls only how the sequence is shown in that monitor; it has nothing to do with how any sources are handled in the sequence.
    Please provide the following information:
    Exact version of Premiere Pro
    Exact version of operating system
    Graphics card and driver
    Also, please post a screenshot showing the following
    Project panel with the Video Info column visible
    the Timeline visible
    one of the problematic clips selected and the Effect Controls panel visible, with the Motion section twirled open.

  • Lync 2013 client Microphone auto Gain and video aspect ratio settings

    I can't disable the auto microphone gain which seems to be regulated by the Lync client.
    When having a meeting with video for instance, the microphone of the listening partner (side b) will keep on increasing the microphone gain, until it is on its maximum, because the listening partner is listening and does not make any noise.
    When someone on the other side of the room on side b is having a conversation with someone else, the mic gain keeps increasing till side a can follow that conversation, the mic is very sensitive.
    This can not be, there is no way to disable the gain in the Lync client, I've tried to disable the right of a program to take exclusive right of the device, without succes.
    Why did Microsoft didn't think about this, we need an advanced settings menu where things can be shaped.
    Not only the microphone gain is a problem, also the way the video is presented, there is no way to set an aspect ratio, if i'm having a 16:9 screen the video is chopped at the bottem and top of the video of the sending partner, so i'm unable to see the whole
    room of the sending side, which is there cause the cam can provide me a nice overview of the side when viewing the local cam at that side, but not with Lync.
    We are in an evaluation of Lync, but really getting annoyed by these short comings, in my opinion some basic settings which should be in lync from start. We can not sell these short comings to our employees.
    Maybe i'm looking in the wrong direction, if so, please tell me.

  • HD frame sizes and pixel aspect ratios

    I have 1920 x 1080 HD footage shot on the Canon 5D Mark II and trying to add some filters to it in AE and then render as a 1280 x 720 file. None of the DVC PRO HD presets seem to get me to this frame size and when I've rendered to that frame size the renders come out distorted, indicating to me that the pixel aspect ratio is off. The DVC PRO HD preset renders a 960 x720 movie. I've been told that these will play at 1280 x 720 but am nervous about this as the work is for an event and I don't want anything to go wrong. I can't figure out how to render a movie that has the right dimensions and the right pixel aspect ratio.
    One workaround seems to be to render at 1920 x 1080 and import it into Final Cut and make it 1280 x 720 there. But of course this is an extra step.

    I don't quite follow. Feel free to define a custom composition size as you see fit. Indeed AE does not provide presets for everything, but given the plethora of possible output targets, this cannot be the goal of such an exercise. You should only use the DVCPro preset, if you plan on roundtripping without modifying the resolution, i.e. writing the modified clips back to a tape with the same specs/ via the same deck. The more interesting question here is, whether the stuff will actually be played via such a deck on the event or if it e.g. will be output from a BluRay disc via a Playstation or something. In the latter case they'd probably even prefer it to remain at the original full HD res for output via HDMI without extra conversions, as the 960x res would be of no use to them...

  • Help with custom cropping and known aspect Ratio's

    I would like to crop a small part of a larger image with custom / free flow dimensions to the crop and then be able to print / export at a know print friendly aspect ration. An example would be a taking a crop of one person in a couple,from a larger image. The crop is outside common aspect ratios. Can lightroom fit the image to an aspect ratio of my liking whilst maintaining everything I have cropped?

    Clearly we can't get one aspect ratio into a different aspect ratio without either trimming bits off, or else leaving gaps.
    So the best I can suggest is: crop in Develop according to the subject content that you don't want to see.
    Then in Print, set up your print layout (or choose a print template) which contains an image cell of the desired size and shape.
    There are two ways that a photo can be put into such a cell: it can be fitted "loose" so that you always see the whole current crop, leaving white margins as required; or else it can be fitted "tight" using the Zoom to Fill checkbox. In the latter case, LR applies an additional print-only crop which forces the image that is seen, to adopt the shape of the cell. So the aspect ratio of the Develop crop, does not need to have been exact for this precise output.
    This print-only crop will only remove further bits of the photo, not put any back - unlike the Develop crop. But you can slide the image around for the best composition, in terms of what it trims off.
    Your main (Develop) crop has not been altered in any way by doing this, and can of course still be adjusted further also, which will in turn alter how the zoom-to-fill appears.
    [ edit add: The Develop crop might be made specific for a particular print shape, but does not have to be, with the above technique. Maybe one actively wants to retain the camera-original aspect, with other kinds of output in mind. In any case, page margins often mean that the actual printed area is not quite exactly the same shape as the notional page anyway - a "10x8" printed with a half-inch margin on three sides and a three-quarter inch margin on the bottom, would print 9" x 6 3/4" (which is a different shape than 10x8). And all that would need to have been worked out each time, re-cropping the main composition for each different output size, margin width, etc then re-cropping it back again to 3:2 (or whatever) for your web upload. That can be managed through presets, virtual copies, snapshots - but sounds like a lot of extra work to me. My own images are cropped for general purposes, but each one remembers its last print settings also - which places it onto a page in the needed manner.]

  • Double Preset and other aspects of LR?

    How do you apply double or more presets to the same picture and know that you're doing so? becouse sometimes I just wanna aplly different presets individualy  to an image to see how its gonna look like for each one without apllying all of them. Also for some reason when I aplly preset ,modyfy it a bit .export it and overwrite the original file, the image in the lightroom gets double tretment of that particular preset , so i have to click on import tab(the one next to history) for it to become like i originaly exported. why is this??

    The History panel in Develop is invaluable for seeing the effects of any pre-sets.
    LR never overwrites a file; but it will leave the state of how the image is viewed where you last left it. Again, check History; you can click on any state up or down the list.
