2-column elastic layout and size of text/image

Hello,
I'm using the 2-column-elastic template of Dreamweaver CS4 and have got a few questions related to its use. As far as I understand it (I'm new to HTML, CSS, etc.), it is elastic because the dimensions of the divs are defined with the unit "em" and will resize if the user changes the text size of the browser. (Is this the best for accessibility purposes?)
Question 1: how to make sure my page is initially 780 px wide?
I have a banner image in the header, it has a 780-px width. Under it there is a menu made of five 156-px elements.
I have defined the default page text size to 80 % instead of 100 %. Apparently, 780 px is equal to 61 em with these settings. Hence, I defined the width of the container to 61 em (instead of the 46 em at 100 % of the Adobe template). However, this didn't always work: depending on the browser, a thin 1-px wide line appeared to the right of the banner.
To try to fix this, I have set a "min-width: 780px" and "width: 60em", hoping that doing so my page would have an initial width of 780 px but still resize (increase) if the text size is increased in the browser. If the text size is decreased, I keep a 780-px width. Is this the normal way to proceed? The property "min-width" returns a warning when I validate the side for browser compatibility. Same for min-height by the way (I'd like my page to be roughly 30 em high at minimum).
Question 2: how can I make sure that my banner will expand when the text size is increased?
When I increase the text size in the browser, the text of my page resizes and depending on the browser, the banner image will expand or not. I would like it to always resize to keep a consistent layout. How can I do this?
The banner currently resizes with:
- Mac OS X: Opera 9;
- Windows XP: Safari 4beta (but the menu bar seems narrower), Firefox 3, Opera 9, IE 8.
The image doesn't currently resize with:
- Mac OS X: Safari 3, Netscape Navigator 9, Stainless 0.5, Camino 1.6, Firefox 3;
- Windows XP: Netscape Navigator 9, Chrome 1, IE6 (+ other problems), IE7 (+ other problems)
(Other problems: usual unwanted spaces between the banner, the menu and the "title". I managed to fix some of them with "display: block", but it doesn't work around the top menu.)

This past hour I tried to get centering of images, text and background to fit properly in both IE (5,6 and 7) and Firefox.
Centering with a liquid layout (which I prefer due to its better "said" predictability) is an absolute pain (nothing would seem to fit); I reverted back to elastic layout because of this issue.

Three column fixed layout and text-wrap

I have a page using the three col fixed header and footer
layout.
I know that if your #maincontent div has a left margin the
width+ of the left sidebar, the sidebar appears to continue down
the page no matter how much content is has in it. In the 3 column
fixed layout comments it says to delete that margin if you want the
text to flow into that space after the sidebar content ends. This
is what I want but it does not work in IE 7.
Is there a workaround?

Instead of that , define three windows for three clolumns and then define three text modules that would be very easy. I have done the similar requirement for 2 columns.

Elastic layout and centering

I have a elastic layout with just one column.
The main content container has a centered background (which consists of a two vertical colored bands, with the transition in the middle of the page). Padding and margins for body and container are zero.
The main content container contains two images, side by side, with their joint border right in the middle too (for that I use an ID for the left image to align its right side to the center, for the right image I do the reverse).
However: when viewing the page, there is an offset between the background center and the image center (just a few pixels), visually very annoying.
(css and html file included)
This offset visible is both in Firefox and IE7.
What do I do wrong?

Newsletter layout, aligning columns, paragraph breaks and lines of text

HI,
I have never designed a newsletter before.
It is annoying me because I am trying to be as meticulous as possible with my alignment, but I notice there are things all over the place that don't line up.
I have a paragraph style, with space before and after. I have three columns. When I look at one line of text across all three columns, they do not line up. The WOULD line up if I had all straight text and no image wraps, but the image wraps, and the start of a new paragraph in column two, throws off alignment in column three.
What is the best way to make stuff line up with the least amount of effort possible?
Are there tutorials on good newsletter layout design? Grid layout?

I just stated working with InDesign in my GA 101 class. It really was great fun but takes alot of practice. Still learning something new everyday. I will be working with grids the next class and will be checking in the forum for help.

ClearType is on and size of text is medium 125% problem menu bar bookmark bar and tab text is not clere at all

system is windows 7 ClearType is on and also in display settings medium is chosen for 125% text size all the bars and tab text is very not clear at all

Little bit of progress:
When I allow whatever IE7 blocks, the menu works but 75% of
the background images don't show up until I hover over them. The
tabbed menu seems to work fine then though.
Edit: Sorted the images no showing, but the "Stopped ActiveX
running" etc error menu still pops up...can I stop that happening
or is it something that is set on each individual's computer?
Also the white box background around the round buttons show
up, as if it was jpeg not a GIF, is that solvable?

Use of different cheques of different layout and size

Hi all
Actually I am facing the following problem:-
Our Co. has 2 divisions- one at Delhi and another at Gujarat.
We are using SBI automatic Payment method and Payment with print at Delhi. We are using F-58 for that and FCHI T- Code has been used.
For gujarat project we want to use HDFC bank cheques which are small in size in comparison to SBI cheques used at Delhi.
Is it possible that we can use SBI cheques at Delhi and HDFC banks cheque at Gujarat without having any size problem?
We are using the same production servers.
What are the steps that are to be used for doing the above problem?

Set Finder Layout and Size - Silly Question

Hi Guys and Happy Late Valentine's Day!
I have a really easy question regarding the size of the finder window. Every time I open a new window in the Finder, it is too small for my liking, so I have to resize it. Do you know how I can set a size for the window so that every time I open Finder, it is the size of my liking?

You are right, that is exactly what happens. Unfortunately, this is how Leopard works. I personally liked the pre-leopard versions of Finder windowing. Sizes, position and views stuck. I have actually never really used the Finder icon for opening a new window. I'm a big fan of keyboard commands. Alt-Tab to switch between applications, in Finder: Command-N for new window, Command-Shift-A for the Applications window, Command-Shift-H for your home folder etc. With keyboard shortcuts, the windowing behavior will work like you want it to.
There is no 'fix' for this, since this is how Finder is supposed to work. There might be a setting somewhere deep in the Finder application itself to change the default size. I don't know where it would be though.
Sorry, I can't help any further. Maybe someone else will post on my idea in the last paragraph.

In Acrobat XI, how can I select and move multiple text/image blocks simultaneously on the same page?

I work with student-generated PDFs that require all content to be within a specific margin range. Occasionally tables and figures are indented or otherwise spaced incorrectly so that the content violates the margin requirements. In Acrobat X, I could use the select tool to draw a select box around all of the text and lines within a table, for example, and just slide the entire table over a bit to meet the requirements without sending the PDF back to the author for a correction. This didn't always work, but often enough that I was able to use it on a daily basis.
Is there a way to select multiple (but not ALL) text blocks and image pieces on a page, so they may be moved simultaneously? If I have to select every text block and line (or every point and line within a graph) and move them each individually, this is going to be a nightmare.
I have Acrobat XI for both Mac and Windows, but tend to use the Windows version more often.

Hey, I'm using Acrobat XI and I can't multi select like I use too do with shift as always. Now I get a green note every time I want to multi select with shift + click as always. I also use Pitstop and I get the same green notes.

19 items on a menu and each has text, image and price. HELP???!!!

I have a UITableView with a menu on it. I would like to have a description, picture, title and price for each item. there are 19 items so i figured that creating 19 views in the storyboard would not work. Is there a way of doing this? I have the head first iphone development book and it has an app almost the same as mine called DrinkMixer but it is using xcode 3.1 not 4.2. Please help.

Liquid and Elastic Layout

My first attempt at a liquid layout seems to work well in the
sense it fits various browser sizes. I then discovered elastic
layout and thought I should incorporate it for users to resize the
text. Now I am having problems with text spilling all over the
place. I am using % and ems. Should I just stick with the liquid
layout or has anyone got any tips.

this sort of thing gave me head aches for ages. i found the
best way is to use a fix px size for your main wrapper/container.
if you are using ap divs in the main wrapper div, set the positon
as relative in your css code, i.e
#wrapper
position:relative;
doing it this way, everything always takes up the same amount
of pixels within your page, no matter what resolution you are
viewing in.
i, personally, would recomment a main wrapper size of about
770px.
i also have discovered that if you create your pages catering
to every whim, of every user, you will surely go mad. i did.
so create it to look good, as it is. if you think people may
have to make text larger, than do it yourself in the design.

I would like to create a custom datagridview column containing text images and MS Word OLE objects

I am an old time LabView programmer going back to 2.0. But moved on with my career several years ago. But here I am back attempting a custom column in dataviewgrid control. .NET is hard. My goal is to read in an MS Word document and parse it out to a custom column. The column will contain regular old text, images and MS Word objects, sometimes called OLE objects.
There is scant information on creating .NET and labview when it comes to form manipulation. I have stuggled through the learning curve and now able to insert a text box column into a datagridview and add it to the form container and actually size it to the datagridview control. I've added a menu, but still figuring out the layout class. Did I say .NET is hard?
I know there must be a custom column created and even found a C# example, sorta. Trouble is the example uses easy stuff like override and private. It will take me another 3 weeks for that, darnit I'm getting lazy.
Does anybody out there have some example of a custom column in the datagridview?

This is what the progress looks like so far. I broke the tasks down in sub VIs. One to create a custom cell so I can add it to the column CellTemplate. The other to add the column to the control. My limited knowledge of .NET and the implementation in LV causes me to question the value of LV .NET.
The coding to create a TextBoxCell override with ImageCell CellTemplate. Honestly I'm guessing what to do, because the LV documentation on inheritance and overriding is poor at best.
The column coding to add the cell to the custom column.
Probe 19 always comes up with an error. The error is the standard 1172 with no clue what is causing it. The "index" will work on 0 or 1, I suspect bc the two cell types are 0 and 1 but nothing tells me that, just guessing.

CSS elastic layout - Why does main column have two widths?

In my first all-CSS site, things were going well until I added content to the pages.
The layout is Dreamweaver's 3-column elastic with a header and footer. I also inserted an extra div for a Spry horizontal menu.
As soon as the main column content gets below that of the sidebars, it expands -- the top three paragraphs might appear about 5 inches wide and all the rest below are 6 inches wide. I don't get it.

You don't have enough left and right margins on your #mainContent division. Try this:

How to CHANGE (in a permanent way) FONT (and SIZE) in Finder columns ?

How I can change the font (and also its size) of text in Finder Window columns ?
A condensed font would allow seeing more text (for example, Helvetica Condensed Light).
Does anybody have an idea ?

and I have to do it every time a new Finder window opens …

Sorry, you can't. Apple provides no method of changing the system font away from Lucida Grande. TinkerTool will let you change some fonts, but only affects applications written in Cocoa. It cannot change the system font.

Hold down the Command+Option keys. Click and hold the mouse button on the bottom of any column where you see the little double vertical lines. Drag left or right to change all columns at once to the same size. I'm pretty sure this is on a window by window basis, so you'd have to do it for each one you want to change, including open and save dialogue boxes. But once set, that window will remember your settings.
