2 Undo Tablespace both ONLINE, How to drop previous undo tbs

Undo management=auto
After Cloning :-
To reclaim space i created another undo tablespace, but now both are online, but as per oracle as soon as you switch undo tablespace, previous undo TBS gets in Pending offline mode,offline mode, (So that transaction get finished)
But in my case Both UNDO Tablespaces are online
Previous Undo TBS1:- 600 GB
New UNDo Tb2s:- 100GB
Please suggest how to drop this online undo TBS1

    what is the difference between undo tablespace and online redo log files. I am confused
    as per my knowledge undo tablespace is used to store the undo information when a table is being updated so that, just incase we need to rollback a transaction we know what was present in the table earlier.
    when a transaction fails the SMON performs the rollback of the data.
    This undo data is stored in the undo tablespace and read consistency if any is enforced.
    is my understanding till here correct?
    Now, can this undo data/before image not be stored in the redo log buffer and online redolog files?
    can redo-log files not store this information?
    in fact, is it that when undo tablespaces exist in a database, the undo data/before image is stored in both the undo tablespace and also the redo log files?

    This question has been asked many times before. The answer is always the same.
    Yes, redo contains the before image of data (and the after-image). Therefore, it **COULD** be used to roll back a transaction.
    BUT... Redo is written sequentially. Using it to rollback your transaction would involve reading through all the redo written by maybe thousands of other people. It would be painfully slow.
    Your transaction is, however, directly linked to just the UNDO that it generates (which is JUST the before image of the data). So, your undo is your undo and doesn't share space with anyone else's undo. Therefore, using it to roll back YOUR transaction is fast.
    The fact that undo is only the before image of the data also makes it faster than wading through a sea of before and AFTER images as you'd find in redo. About twice as fast, in fact, since there's half the data. Roughly.
    Redo also gets written and flushed to disk whenever there's a commit, 3 seconds are up or too much (1MB, actually) redo gets generated between flushes caused by other factors. Your redo gets flushed when those things happen, even if you haven't actually committed your transaction. And redo logs recycle themselves, meaning that your redo -even if your transaction hasn't been committed yet- can be over-written by later transactions. Try rolling back when that's happened, if redo was the source of your rollback data!
    Undo, however, cannot be over-written if the transaction has not been committed. Ever. If you don't commit for three years, there will be three years' undo stored in your database (assuming you had the space, of course!).
    I could go on, but that will do. Redo is there fore RECOVERY, after catastrophe. Undo is there for read-consistency (and the occasional change of mind). Two different functions. Two different mechanisms. Each one highly tuned to doing what it does, why it does it, most efficiently and effectively.

    Or simply wait for a while patiently.

    You can switch from using one undo tablespace to another. Because the UNDO_TABLESPACE initialization parameter is a dynamic parameter, the ALTER SYSTEM SET statement can be used to assign a new undo tablespace.
    The following statement switches to a new undo tablespace:
    ALTER SYSTEM SET UNDO_TABLESPACE = undotbs_02; 
    Assuming undotbs_01 is the current undo tablespace, after this command successfully executes, the instance uses undotbs_02 in place of undotbs_01 as its undo tablespace.
    If any of the following conditions exist for the tablespace being switched to, an error is reported and no switching occurs:
      The tablespace does not exist
      The tablespace is not an undo tablespace
      The tablespace is already being used by another instance (in an Oracle RAC environment only)
    The database is online while the switch operation is performed, and user transactions can be executed while this command is being executed. When the switch operation completes successfully, all transactions started after the switch operation began are assigned to transaction tables in the new undo tablespace.
    The switch operation does not wait for transactions in the old undo tablespace to commit. If there are any pending transactions in the old undo tablespace, the old undo tablespace enters into a PENDING OFFLINE mode (status). In this mode, existing transactions can continue to execute, but undo records for new user transactions cannot be stored in this undo tablespace.
    An undo tablespace can exist in this PENDING OFFLINE mode, even after the switch operation completes successfully. A PENDING OFFLINE undo tablespace cannot be used by another instance, nor can it be dropped. Eventually, after all active transactions have committed, the undo tablespace automatically goes from the PENDING OFFLINE mode to the OFFLINE mode. From then on, the undo tablespace is available for other instances (in an Oracle Real Application Cluster environment).

    After you switch the UNDO_TABLESPACE parameter to the new tablespace, at the minimum, you have to wait for active transactions to complete (commit/rollback) before you can take the old Undo Tablespace offline.  Note that if you take the old Undo Tablespace  offline too quickly, you may prevent long running queries from reading from the old Undo Tablespace and may cause them to error with ORA-01555.  So you need to wait a reasonable time (e.g look at MAXQUERYLEN in V$UNDOSTAT) before you take the old Undo Tablespace offline.

    We had a UNDO Tablespace of 22Gb but it is using just 2GB. How to shrink undo tablespace. we are using clustered 3 node production database 10.2.0.4
    Is there is way that we can shrink UNDO Tablespace or do i need to create a UNDO tablespace and assign the undo tablespace to DB and drop the old UNDO?
    How to ensure that transactions are done and free to drop the old UNDO?
    Is it something we need to restart all the three nodes as each node has its own UNDO Tablespace.
    Need Help on this issue.

  • Cannot drop undo tablespace with Active extents but no active sessions

    I am running on 10gr2 oracle database in a Linux 32 bit environment.
    I have a corrupted undo datafile. I've been able to recover the datafile but still the alert logs is still showing that it is corrupted.
    Now what I'm trying to do is to drop the old undo tablespace like the one discussed here Change undo tablespace in Oracle - Switch Oracle's Undo tablespace.
    My problem is I have an Active extent but no active session corresponding to it:

    Yes i was able to recover the datafile but the alert_log kept on prompting that it is still corrupted. The datafile's status is online.
    I want to kill the session/s contributing to the PENDING OFFLINE status of the rollback segment so I can already drop the undotablespace and so
    that the alert log will stop prompting for that corrupted datafile in that UNDOTABLESPACE.
    Can i Just alter the tablespace's datafiles to offline drop then just drop it. Then I drop the tablespace?

    Having a spirited debate at work today. Is it possible, or has anyone successfully moved an undo tablespace datafile while keeping the database online? (Hypothetically someone created it in the wrong directory)
    My logic:
    Create a new undo tablespace B
    Switch undo tablespace from A to B
    Take tablespace A offline
    Once A goes from 'PENDING OFFLINE' to 'OFFLINE' copy the file to new location
    Alter database rename file location
    Switch undo tablespace from B to A
    Drop tablespace B
    Any comments?

    Yes I do understood that, but you don't have to "move" the datafile.
    The procedure I proposed is just to create a new undo tablespace, drop the former and forget about it.
    You can't "move" the file stricto sensu while the database is online, but nothing prevents you from switching from one tablespace to another. Once it's done, everything's fine. And if you're on 10G (r2?) you might even rename tablespace "B" to tablespace "A"!

  • Dropping the 4th undo tablespace, 4th thread from a 3 instance database

    I migrated a 4 instance RAC database from a 4 node server to a 3 node RAC database server. However, I still have the 4th undo tablespace and the 4th redo log thread. Are there any precautions I need to take before dropping the 4th undo tablespace? Must I also drop the 4th redo log thread, or will the database function properly even without a 4th node to go with the 4th thread?
    I presume I have to also disable the 4th public thread? Is this the command below?
    Alter database disable public thread=4;

    I guess it does not matter that group 12 in thread 4 is "CURRENT" since the thread is not being used. But I don't believe I can drop a "CURRENT" group, can I?

    my undotbs is growing 14g (although i my undotbs actul size is 9g) I try to resize datafiles, but
    this may not work.
    So, i am assuming to perform this task

    - Change parameter UNDO_TABLESPACE
    SQL> alter system set UNDO_TABLESPACE=UNDOTBS2;
    - Drop UNDOTBS1
    SQL> drop tablespace UNDOTBS1 including contents and datafiles;>
    but my question is , is it worthy to delete the undotbs1 whose having alot of data and if i deleted
    this (undotablespace) data ,i will not able to recover it thoroughly?

    The reason why you cannot drop this tablespace is because it has been declared as the undo tablesapace for the database by means of the UNDO_TABLESPACE instance parameter.
    You have to create a new undo tablespace and change the undo_tablespace instance parameter value to point to the new undo tablespace:
    ALTER SYSTEM SET UNDO_TABLESPACE=<N EW UNDO TS>;
    Afterwards you will have to wait for a while before you are able to drop the current tablespace if there are active transactions or if the information is still required to perform flashback queries (it depends on the UNDO_RETENTION instance parameter), so it is suggested to temporarily reduce this value so you can perform the switch to the new tablespace and you can get rid of the current tablespace.

  • Undo tablespace currupt and no clean backup

    We are facing critical problem with database. We have not any clean backup and database in no archive log mode. Suddenly database is shutdown and when we are trying to open database it is giving error:-
    ORA-01172: recovery of thread 1 stuck at block 350230 of file 3
    ORA-01151: use media recovery to recover block, restore backup if needed
    File 3 is Undo file.
    Is there any way to open database?

    1) First, follow Howardjr recomendations and allways do a backup first.
    2) Open a SR with Metalink to help with your problem
    3) If you want to try something here are some options, but never skip the point 1 previously explained.
    Well, you have two possible scenarios, one supported other unsupported.
    This is an inconsistency issue..
    Solution
    ============
    *1]Supported Solution:*
    Restore-Incomplete recovery the DB from backup or rebuild the DB using an export dump.
    *2]Internal (Not-supported) Solution:*
    Update undo$ to change the status$ = 1 (undo segment is dropped) for the corrupted undo segment.
    Caution:
    This is NOT a supported solution. Therefore ensure that a full database cold backup is taken bbefore doing this data-dictionary patching.
    Steps to do the patching:
    1) First ensure that a full database backup is taken.
    2) Modify/add the following parameters in initSID.ora:
    undo_management=manual
    job_queue_processes =0
    aq_tm_processes=0
    systemtrig_enabled=false
    3) Shutdown
    4) Startup restrict pfile
    5) set transaction use rollback segment system;
    if set transaction above fails, then not to proceed further.
    6) Update undo$ to change the status$ = 1 (undo segment is dropped) for
    the corrupt undo segment.
    update undo$ set status$ = 1
    where us# = <'undo segment id'>
    and ts#=<'tablespace id'>
    and file#=<'file id'>
    and block# = <'block id'>
    and status$=2;
    or
    update undo$ set status$ = 1
    where name = <'corrupt undo segment name'>
    and status$=2;
    This will update only 1 row. Rollback the update if more than 1 row is updated.
    7) Commit;
    8) Shutdown abort
    9) Set back in init.ora parameters modified in Step 2.
    Startup restrict
    10) Drop the corrupt undo tablespace using command:
    drop tablespace <corrupt undo tablespace name> including contents;
    11) Create new undo tablespace.
    In initSID.ora, set undo_management=auto, undo_tablespace=<'new undo tablespace name'>
    Restart the instance.
    12) Take a backup.
    *Parameter offlinerollback_segments is not useful:*
    Trying to drop the corrupt undo segment or the undo tablespace by setting parameters undo management=manual and offline_rollback_segments in initSID.ora will fails with error: ORA-00600 [ktssdrp1].
    To see the information about the corrupt block use this query:
    select us#, name, ts#, file#, block#,status$ from undo$
    where (ts#, file#, block#) not in
    (select ts#, file#, block# from seg$ where type# in (1,10)) and status$ > 1;I had the same problem some time ago, and the unsupported solution works great, but never try it without a full backup first.

    I am duplicating database and got below error:

    Error is because in target database undo tablespace is UNDOTBS_NEW and in auxiliary database undo tablespace name in init file is UNDOTBS. I followed the meatlink doc 433992.1 which suggest following steps to recover from above error:
    1) edit the parameter UNDO_MANAGEMENT to "MANUAL"
    2) start database again
    3) drop the UNDO tablespace
    4) recreate UNDO tablespace which matches to name in init file.
    5) shutdown & start DB again.
    Now, i edited init file and tried to start DB and got following error:

    Q2. What happens if you do not have an Undo Tablespace ?The system tablespace's Undo segment would be used. But that's a bad idea and you should have one .
    Q2. How does an Undo Tablespace relate to Undo / Rollback Segments in a database ?Because Undo segments are no where else but within the Undo tablespace only.

  • Undo tablespace resize error

    Total space occupied by UNDO tablespace is : 3G and used space for UNDO tablespace is only 512M , so approx 2.5G space is free. But when i tried to resize the undo tablespace to 1G then its showing the below error :
    ORA-03297: file contains used data beyond requested RESIZE value
    but the used data size is 512M only.
    Kindly help me to resize the undo tablespace to 1G.
    Database : Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.2.0 - 64bi

    you can't resize undo tablespace. If you are trying to reduce the size.
    then add a unod tablespace may like undotbs2 then set undotbs2 as default to your database. then drop the prvious undo tablespace
