2 VPN Tunnels between 2 devices on separate links
Hello,
I have a 2811 connected to two different ISPs, implying I have 2 separate interfaces for both links. I initially setup a VPN tunnel to a 3rd party remote site on one of the links/interfaces. I am now required to setup an additonal VPN tunnel to the same remote site on the other interface/link. When I finish the config and run tests, I get an error saying that the crypto map is not applied on the correct interface and that the peer is being routed through a non-crypto map interface.
One thing I would like to know is if it is possible to configure the router to establish these two tunnels on the different links/interfaces to the same peer. Please note that the first VPN tunnel is still active, but the other one has just refused to come up. Please see the snippets of my router config below:

So its the tunnel running on ISP1 that is fine while the tunnel on ISP2 is not coming up.
While pasting this though, I just realized there is no default route for ISP2, could this be the problem and would adding another default route not create some sort of loop?
Regards,
Femi
Hello Marcin,
When you said I didnt need to put both ISPs into VRF, i assume you meant that I only needed to put on f the ISPs into VRF, specifically the other ISP I was trying to establish a new VPN connection over?
I did read the cheat sheet thoroughly and also went through some other documents. However, I still cound not get out of the router as the router kept complaining about routing issues:
1. The peer must be routed through the crypto map interface. The following peer(s) are routed through non-crypto map interface - a.b.130.130
2. The tunnel traffic destination must be routed through the crypto map interface. The following destinations are routed through non-crypto map interface - a.b.130.134
Below is the config I applied but I didnt get traffic out of the router still to even attempt to establish a connection:

VPN tunnel between 2 RRAS servers, both performing NAT with 2 network connections
I have a need to configure an IPSEC policy between 2 networks. Both servers are located at separate offices, are virtual, are 2008 R2 standard, and only perform the function of NAT between a public IP and the LAN. They each have 1 network
adapter with a public address and 1 adapter with an internal LAN address. I would like to setup an IPSEC policy between these 2 RRAS so that both LAN's can communicate.
My question's; would this be the best method to get this accomplished? If not, what are best practices? Does anyone have documentation for this type of setup?
I can create a policy between 2 servers, each behind each RRAS vm, but I'd like to keep domain controllers, AD, etc. out of this and not exposed - just have RRAS handle it.What you need to do is look for a guide to site to site VPN which you can follow. There are plenty out there of varying degrees of clarity and accuracy.
The situation briefly is that each site operates normally using its router as a NAT device to provide Internet access for the LAN. In addition, each router is configured to provide a router to router VPN link. Each router has a static route to forward
traffic for the subnet of the other site through the VPN tunnel.
The net result is that a client wanting Internet access uses NAT to give it an Internet connection. If instead the client wants to access the other site, the request is sent through the VPN tunnel. There is no confusion because Internet addresses must be
public and the site addresses are private. This is all transparent to the client because it is all handled by the routers. The client simply sends the packet to the default gateway.
The private traffic between sites is encrypted and encapsulated while it is crossing the Internet. The Internet routers see only the public address on the wrapper. The other site sees only the private IP of the packet after it has been unencapsulated
and decrypted. The two sites behave as if they were linked by an IP router, but the operation is slow because of the delay in getting the packets from site to site.

How can I improve performance over a Branch Office IPsec vpn tunnel between and SA540 and an SA520
Hello,
I just deployed one Cisco SA540 and three SA520s.
The SA540 is at the Main Site.
The three SA520s are the the spoke sites.
Main Site:
Downstream Speed: 32 Mbps
Upstream Speed: 9.4 Mbps
Spoke Site#1:
Downstream Speed: 3.6 Mbps
Upstream Speed: 7.2 Mbps (yes, the US is faster than the DS at the time the speed test was taken).
The SA tunnels are "Established"
I see packets being tranmsitted and received.
Pinging across the tunnel has an average speed of 32 ms (which is good).
DNS resolves names to ip addresses flawlessly and quickly across the Inter-network.
But it takes from 10 to 15 minutes to log on to the domain from the Spoke Site#1 to the Main Site across the vpn tunnel.
It takes about 15 minutes to print across the vpn tunnel.
The remedy this, we have implemented Terminal Services across the Internet.
Printing takes about 1 minute over the Terminal Service Connection, while it takes about 15 minutes over the VPN.
Logging on to the network takes about 10 minutes over the vpn tunnel.
Using an LOB application takes about 2 minutes per transaction across the vpn tunnel; it takes seconds using Terminal Services.
I have used ASAs before in other implementation without any issues at all.
I am wondering if I replaced the SAs with ASAs, that they may fix my problem.
I wanted to go Small Business Pro, to take advantage of the promotions and because I am a Select Certified Partner, but from my experience, these SA vpn tunnels are unuseable.
I opened a case with Small Business Support on Friday evening, but they couldnt even figure out how to rename an IKE Policy Name (I figured out that you had to delete the IKE Policy; you cannot rename them once they are created).
Maybe the night weekend shift has a skeleton crew, and the best engineers are available at that time or something....i dont know.
I just know that my experience with the Cisco TAC has been great for the last 10 years.
My short experience with the Cisco Small Business Support Center has not been as great at all.
Bottom Line:
I am going to open another case with the Day Shift tomorrow and see if they can find a way to speed things up.
Now this is not just happening between the Main Site and Spoke Site #1 above. It is also happeninng between the Main Site and Spoke #2 (I think Spoke#2 has a Download Speed of about 3Mbps and and Upload Speed of about 0.5 Mbps.
Please help.
I would hate to dismiss SA5xx series without making sure it is not just a simple configuration setting.Hi Anthony,
I agree!. My partner wants to just replace the SA5xxs with ASAs, as we have never had problems with ASA vpn performance.
But I want to know WHY this is happening too.
I will definitely run a sniffer trace to see what is happening.
Here are some other things I have learned from the Cisco Small Business Support Center (except for Item 1 which I learned from you!)
1. Upgrade the SA540 at the Main Site to 2.1.45.
2a. For cable connections, use the standard MTU of 1500 bytes.
2.b For DSL, use the following command to determine the largets MTU that will be sent without packet fragmentation:
ping -f -l packetsize
Perform the items below to see if this increases performance:
I was told by the Cisco Small Business Support Center that setting up a Manual Policy is not recommended; I am not sure why they stated this.
3a. Lower the IKE encryption algorithm from "AES-128" to DES.
3b. Lower the IKE authentication algorithm to MD5
3c. Also do the above for the VPN Policy
Any input is welcome! -
Unable to print from HQ to Branch through the VPN tunnel between ASAs
We have site to site VPN configured between ASAs. The VPN tunnel is up and running as desired except for one printer in the subnet. the users in the Hq cannot print in the branch office printer. I have allowed the ip protocols for the printer subnet but still it is not working. When I do a packet trac the traffic for the printer is allwed through the tunnel.
Can anyone suggest what can be preventing from printing? When other printers in the same subnet can be reached, I would first control the IP-settings of the printer. In my experience it's most likely a wrong subnet-mask or gateway.

Communicate Directly Between VPN Tunnel Sites
I have an ASA 5505 in the main office and at several remote sites. I have setup a site to site vpn tunnel between the main office and each remote site, "Hub and Spoke". I can ping between the main office through each tunnel to the respective remote site. I need to be able to ping directly from each remote site to all other remote sites. Please note I am using ASDM to configure the ASA 5505's. tks
There are a few things you need to do here.
Main ASA
1. Enable "same-security-traffic permit intra-interface" to allow the vpn traffic to bounce off the outside interface on the hub firewall.
2. Edit your interesting traffic (crypto) acls to reflect the new traffic which will be part of the vpn tunnels between main and remote sites. For instance right now your crypto acls include traffic between main site and remote sites. You need to add acl for traffic between remote site to remote site. The config below will allow traffic from remote site 1 to remote site 2.
access-list crypto1 extended permit ip
access-list crypto1 extended permit ip
access-list crypto2 extended permit ip
access-list crypto2 extended permit ip
Remote ASA's
1. Add the new interesting traffic (crypto) acls. Mirror of the acls at main site ASA.
access-list crypto1 extended permit ip
access-list crypto1 extended permit ip
access-list crypto2 extended permit ip
access-list crypto2 extended permit ip
2. Add nat exemption for traffic from remote sites to remote sites for each remote ASA.
access-list inside_nat0_outbound extended permit ip
access-list inside_nat0_outbound extended permit ip
access-list inside_nat0_outbound extended permit ip
access-list inside_nat0_outbound extended permit ip -
Hi all ,
I need create VPN tunnels between two ASAs devices . And these devices are connected through DSL . And as you know in this case we use private outside IP address , because there is a NAT device at the outside . The problem is that no VPN tunnel is created even though all the parameters and the pre-shared-key are typical .I hve allready configured following configuration.
no crypto map newmap interface outside
no crypto map newmap 171 set peer 195.11.199.144
no isakmp key ********* address 195.11.199.144 netmask 255.255.255.255 no-xauth no-config-mode
crypto map newmap 171 set peer 195.11.204.5
isakmp key ******** address 195.11.204.5 netmask 255.255.255.255 no-xauth no-config-mode
clear crypto ipsec sa
clear crypto isakmp sa
crypto map newmap interface outside
Setting were applied successfully however Still VPN tunnel is not been initiated. -
Site-2-Site IPSEC VPN tunnel will not come up.
Hello Experts,
Just wondering if I can get some help on setting up a IPSEC VPN tunnel between a Cisco 2921 and ASA 550x. Below is the config
show run | s crypto
crypto pki token default removal timeout 0
crypto isakmp policy 1
encr aes

crypto isakmp key xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx address A.A.A.A
crypto ipsec transform-set ESP-AES128-SHA esp-aes esp-sha-hmac

crypto map ICQ-2-ILAND 1 ipsec-isakmp
set peer A.A.A.A
set transform-set ESP-AES128-SHA
match address iland_london_s2s_vpn
crypto map ICQ-2-ILAND
The config on the remote end has not been shared with me, so I don't know if I am doing something wrong locally or if the remote end is wrongly configured.
The command Sh crypto isakmp sa displays the following
show crypto isakmp sa

Include multiple sub-interfaces in Cisco ASA for VPN tunnel
I am trying to create a VPN tunnel between two Cisco ASAs where one ASA has multiple sub-interfaces.
Say, In Cisco ASA 5550(in datacentre), I created multiple subinterfaces with VLAN ID as below:
Inside, int0/1 : 10.1.1.0/24
DMZ, int0/1.100: 10.1.100.0/24 (VLAN 100)
Production, int 0/1.101 : 10.1.101.0/24 (VLAN 101)
Management, int 0/1.102: 10.1.102.0/24 (VLAN 102)
And another Cisco ASA 5505 is only configured with 1 x inside interface Inside, int 0/1: 192.168.1.0/24
So far, I have only been able to provide outside access to one of the sub-interfaces as NAT rule on inside interface didn't work for VLANs. Hence had to issue Global NAT rule to be applied on Production subinterface so that production VLAN can have outside access. I have managed to establish VPN tunnel between two ASAs on Production sub-interface only, Source interface = Production subinterface
Additional settings:
Have ACL to allow all sub interfaces to access outsite ( lower security level)
NAT rules is configured on Production subinterface with Source NAT Type as Dynamic PAT; when this was configured with source interface as inside, PCs behind various VLAN coun't access internet.
I want to establish a site-to-site VPN tunnel with multiple sub-interfaces of Cisco ASA 5550 to Cisco ASA 5505. Would you please suggest what I am missing in my configuration? SNMP Management of individual VPN Tunnels
Is there a way of indexing individual VPN Tunnels statically, through a VPN3000 concentrator?
If I MIB browse a VPN3000 concentrator, I can see the individual VPN tunnels each with ifindex numbers, so for the period this tunnel is active, I can collect performance statistics from it. The problem occurs when the connection from the same site is reset, the ifindex is renumbered which means I have to relearn the new ifindex in order to continue collecting information.
Is there a way around this, or is there another solution for getting traffic statistics from VPN tunnels between sites, via SNMP?Since the if numbers change the best way to get your stats would be from the routers behind the vpn on either side. Then you can turn on ip accounting or use netflow on the routers. There is a free netflow collector @ www.ntop.org. I think this approach will work if you.
Hope this helps. -
IPSec tunnel between 2 routers
Hello,
i'm trying to configure an IPSec VPN tunnel between 2 Cisco routers connected to internet via ATM interface, my router is a 1841 with network address 10.200.36.0, the remote router is a Cisco 877 with network address 192.168.9.0.
I tryied to follow some tutorials, without success because i still can't ping any IP address on the remote network and also the VPN tunnel is not up!
May you please help me giving a configuration template, or maybe let me know how to configure it step by step on mine and remote router?
Thank you very much!

Issue with VPN compatibility between 2811 and 2911
hello
I would like to ask anyone have had any issues with setting up a VPN tunnel between 2811 and 2911?
The IPSec VPN is established but for some reason I cannot ping the LAN side to the other LAN side of the other end of the VPN Router?
Any experience would be much appreciated
ThanksIPSec VPN can be with no problem set up between any cisco routers (and not nesesserely cisco), so there are should be no issues in your case.
If you say that tunnel is established successfully, then problem most probably related to routing issues between sites or incorrect crypto-acl configured. Check if hosts on both sites have correct routing information on how to get to subnets on the other site.
To make more accurate assumptions it would help if you provide config on both sites and describe your topology. -
Two separate L2L tunnels between same two ASA
I have a large MPLS fully meshed network with two main locations, both of which have an ASA with internet access as well as the MPLS access. I need to be able to provide a backup connection between the two main locations in the event one of the MPLS links to one or the other goes down.
I am considering using a L2L IPSEC tunnel between the two ASA's but the interesting traffic for the tunnel is different depending on which of the links is down and there fore I would need two different tunnels. I have my servers and remote desktop servers at one of the main sites and the other main site has another organization attached to it externally that the servers must be able to access.
Is there a way of creating two separate L2L tunnels between the two ASA's? Could I perhaps assign two public IP addresses to each of the ASA's and then create the tunnels between different endpoints on each ASA?
Does anyone have another possible solution to the problem?
GeneYou should be able to do what you want using IP SLA. Please see this excellent blog post which documents one way to accomplish it.
Hope this helps. -
Site to SIte VPN through a NAT device
I, i am having some trouble running a site to site vpn between two 3725 routers running c3725-advsecurityk9-mz124-15T1 which i hope i can get some help with, i am probably missing something here. The VPN ran fine when both VPN routers were connected directly to the internet and had public IPs on the WAN interfaces, but i have had to move one of the firewalls inside onto a private IP. The setup is now as below
VPN router A(192.168.248.253)---Company internal network----Fortigate FW-----internet----(217.155.113.179)VPN router B
Now the fortigate FW is doing some address translations
- traffic from 192.168.248.253 to 217.155.113.179 has its source translated to 37.205.62.5
- traffic from 217.155.113.179 to 37.205.62.5 has its destination translated to 192.168.248.253
- The firewall rules allow any traffic between the 2 devices, no port lockdown enabled.
- The 37.205.62.5 address is used by nothing else.
I basically have a GRE tunnel between the two routers and i am trying to encrypt it.
Router A is showing the below

Just to add i have removed the crypto map from the fa0/1 interfaces on both routers just so i can continue my work with the GRE tunnel.

LMS. Links between L3 devices in Campus Manager
Hello,
I'm currently using LMS 3.1 and Campus Manager v 5.1.0
I've several remote sites connected through VPN-tunnels (DMVPN + eigrp).
From the LMS server there is connectivity to all Cisco devices.
In the picture you can see the links between a router and a switch in the remote sites.
But there is no links between central office router and remote sites routers in Campus Manager Network Views.
I've enabled CDP in the routers' tunnel interface but the no results.
Is it possive to see all the sites as a single network (with the connections between routers) ?
Thanks a lot!Now it's fine.
I've just updated Campus Manager -
On my nokia e75 vpn works very well but if I try to activate sip service on vpn it does not work or, in same case, e75 reboots.
Can help me?
Thanks in advance.
SaRick,
Done. after applying
"same-security-traffic permit intra-interface"
pings (icmp) are working between hosts on the VPN tunnel (172.16.8.0).
1. Somehow it works for icmp packet but not for the rest of the ip traffic. Could you please suggest, what is an "access list" command that would allow for example, any ip traffic between the hosts on the tunnel.
2. I also have a few static routes mapped to the management interface on ASA that point to several devices on the corporate LAN ; those devices cannot be reached by the hosts on the VPN tunnel, because ASA sends to them packets incoming from the tunnel through the management interface instead of the private one (which is the default route for the tunneled traffic) and the packets are then spoofed on the external FW because expected from the ASA private interface. I hoped that the "..permit intra-interface" would have solve the issue but no...Is there a way to overcome this ?
Many thanks in advance.
BR, Melita
