2 x Geforce 7800GTs = 4 x Screens ?

If I install 2 x Geforce 7800GT graphics adapters in a motherboard with two PCI Express x16 slots - e.g. K8N Diamond, would I be able to run 4 LCD screens ?
I don't want to run SLI.  The system will not be used for games.  However, I do want multiple 19" (1280 x 1024) monitors with reasonable performance.  As I understand it, you can have two graphics cards running independently but they only run as x8.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
ps I promise to use a single-rail PSU

One year later - I have actually got four screens running on a single workstation using two PCI-e Graphics cards !.
Graphics cards are 2 x 8800GTS
CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
RAM is 4 x 2Gb CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400
O/S is XP Pro x64 SP2b
PSU is 700w Seasonic M12-700
So far, so good - currently checking stability.

  • Is my GeForce 7800GT a dual link card?

I have a GeForce 7800GT in my Quad G5 Mac. How can I tell if it has a dual-link port or not?

No, I'm lucky because I was able to afford an 8-core Mac at home. This 30" screen is going on my Quad G5 at work.
I have a Dell 30" screen at home, it's killer (cheaper than Apple's too!) It replaced three 1600x1200 monitors.

  • Nvidia GeForce 7800GT

    Hi
Can anyone tell me the safe operating temperature range for the GeForce 7800GT in a Quad G5 , I was not able to find any reference to this on the Apple sites , I have set Temperature Monitor to warn me at 85 degrees Celsius and it reaches 85 degrees Celsius after 4 or 5 minutes of running the Apple screen saver "iTunes Art Work" or anything that has allot of movement and color in it. Is it safe to put the temp monitor warning for the Graphics Processor to a higher value as I don't want to damage the Quad. It's running a 30" and a 23" Apple display in a room that is kept is a constant 20/21 degrees Celsius. Or is the 7800GT indeed faulty.Any clues on this would be appreciated.
    Cheers in advance.

This said, I wonder if you are running the latest driver- found references to temperature reporting discrepancies under previous versions. Unfortunately, there are no Mac drivers referenced on the Nvidia site.
If you are experiencing no performance issues during the higher temperature condition, it might be a problem of inadequate airflow around the card (as well as case exhausting). One might consider a fan upgrade. t

  • GeForce 7800GT Xorg Driver

I've tried using the "nv" driver for my GeForce 7800GT (PCI-E) but it simply starts up and freezes on me with a corrupt image of my fluxbox desktop. Vesa driver works fine.

I think the nv driver only supports up to the GeForce FX series. At least that's what I've experienced.
Is there a reason why you havecan not install the official NVIDIA driver? There is an article on the Wiki about it.

  • Will a XFX NVIDIA GeFORCE 7800GT VIDEO CARD work in a G5 quad?

I am thinking of getting a new graphics card and saw this one: XFX NVIDIA GeFORCE 7800GT.
I was just wondering if it will actually work in a Mac?
    Thanks

Nope, that's a PC card. The ROM file on that card will be designed to work with a PC's BIOS and won't work with the Mac's Open Firmware.
You either need to find a Mac version of this card, or the firmware needs to be flashed with a Mac ROM. More information is available here.

  • Any difference between GeForce 7800GT and Radeon X1900 for Aperture?

I keep reading about this Radeon card and I'm curious. Does anyone know if there is a major difference between the Radeon X1900 (for a G5) and the Nvidia GeForce 7800GT and how it affects Aperture? I'm running a G5 dual 2.3 with 5GB RAM and the 7800GT and Aperture is somewhat pokey. Would the X1900 make a big difference with Aperture or not?

guess I should wait until it comes out and get some

  • NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT: is just about to pack in - HELP

NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT: is just about to pack in - fan is running like a lawnmower. It is the card that came with original comp.
Have new Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card - which is suitable for my G5 Quad - Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Quad Machine Model: PowerMac11,2 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1) - problem is - fitting it. The new card comes with Y connection cables - that need to be connected to the cd/dvd drive to get it's power.
MAJOR PROBLEM - the cable sets for the optical drive - are old - and bear no resemblance to the Y cable set for new card in that the power in/out are combined into 1 cable - not a male/female needed??? I only have 1 optical drive bay???
Hoping someone has experienced this when upgrading graphics card - and found a fix for cable problem?

I'm scared to say it - but here Goes - SUCCESS.............
    Firstly, maybe My Quad was built on a Friday or a Monday - cos what should have taken a jittery old man like my myself - 30 mins - ended up as 2 hours +. The pics are all correct in the help sections - and the fan is UNBELIEVABLE - however - there is one snag;
    Secondly, if u suffer from nerves - get a techie to do it - or at least a computer inards savvy person. It is, fiddely - nerve racking - and needs a few modifications + patience;
    Thirdly - if u or someone else does it - _*take off*_ the aluminium cradle - the card sits on - or you'll end up in all sorts of bother - it will need modification once u have the fan fitted so;
Fourthly, the end of the cradle that slides into the support groove - hacksaw/cut off at the 3rd screw = L__here so 2 screw holes left on the supporting front edge and 1 corner hole left - why? -
Finally, my 1st attempt was a failure - because I didn't do Fourthly. The card wasn't fully supported - and must have slipped it's connections - and/or it may have temporarily shorted. It is vital you keep the card supported and level.
My graphics have improved - I kid you not. My Graphics chip now runs at 43-45c - before the new fan >84c+ and even up to 110c at a scary time.
AND IT IS SO QUIET - thank you Japamac - without your guidance and suggestions - it would have been a very expensive - back up computer. Best regards, B

  • MSI Geforce 7800 GTX with MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT in SLI?

Hi. I bought the MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT a few months ago with the intention of buying a second to run in SLI. Now i can't seem to find anywhere that sells it at a decent price. Originally i bought it from www.ebuyer.co.uk but they have discontinued it.

Well, the topic say it all. Ive updated the drivers for my MSI Geforce FX 5200 card and now just after the Windows Xp logo disapear the screen turns black but its ON, he gets signal, if not it should say that i don´t have signal. Ive rebooted using safe mode, removed all the drivers and now im using the PC without any drivers, but i have stuff to do and i need to put this online again. Ive already tryed to use the previous drivers without any luck, same problem.
    Apreciate your help!
    Thanks!

Ive tryed NVIDIA Display Driver for Windows 2000/XP version 72.12 from the MSI website, they didn´t work. Ive entered in safe mode, removed the drivers and then ive tryed out 81.98_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.ex e from the Nvidia website, it didn´t work also. Finaly i tryed to place the old one 66.93_win2kxp_english.exe, also from Nvidia website that ive downloaded sometime ago, guess what, didn´t work. I already used NFR, nasty file remover, but without any luck. Im going to try to use Driver Cleaner Pro now to see what hapens, or you sugest something else?

  • [GeForce 6] Lines across screen when playing games.

    Hi all,
I've upgraged from a Ti4200 to a 6600GT about 5 or 6 months ago. All was well for a while, although it wasn't quite the jump in performance I was expecting (rest of the system bottlenecking it I suppose), but just recently when I'm playing some games, namely SWAT 4 and to a lesser degree BF 2, after a little while, say an hour or so, I start getting these lines across the screen. They are usually horizontal or diagnol and appear to be related to the polygons (or something) in the game as one line might start at the edge of a door frame and run to the corner of the room. I can walk around these lines, so they are actually in the game not like a monitor problem. The more I play the game the worse they get and Swat 4 ends up looking like some giant spiderweb, I can also start to see through different parts of characters too, like behind their knees and stuff. I've lowered the video settings to no avail and overclocking the card seems to bring the problem on quicker. It seems to be getting worse too, .ie. it's happening sooner and sooner each time I play. When I play other games like V8 Supercars 2 or Full Spectrum Warrior I have no problems.
So I guess either the card is faulty or more likely it's a heat problem. If it's heat, why is the problem only surfacing now? Could it be power supply? Or could it be the CPU or some other component?
    My PC specs are :
    P4 2.53 Ghz
    1 Gig RAM @ PC2700
    P4S8X Asus m/board
    120 gig HD
    MSI GF6600GT - AGP
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the replies.
I left 3D Mark 2001 on a loop the other day. It asked me if I wanted to leave the resolution at 1024 x 768 so I did and it crashed and restarted. Not sure how long it long it had been running tho' as I left the room, no more than an hour but. I ran it again at the recommended (640 x 480) and it ran for about an hour and a half with no probs. So I then ran it again at 1024 x 768 for an hour or so and when I came back I watched it for a while and couldn't see any issues. No white dots or anything, certainly no lines like in the games. Bit wierd. So I then played Swat 4 (the worst offender) for probably an hour and a half with no probs at all. Almost like when it crashed it reset something. My PC is a bit like that tho', sometimes I turn it on and have no problems, other times I do even tho' I haven't changed any settings.
I haven't been able to get back to it since (got two squids) so I'll have a play over Xmas holidays and see what I can find. I think it's a heat problem. The weather's warmed up an that's when the problem started. I'm pretty sure when I looked in the case last time it only had a pissy little single 100mm fan, plus one or two in the power supply unit. So will do the portable house fan thing and see.
Thanks again. Will let u know what I find.

  • Nvidia GeForce 9400M makes my MacBook Pro screen blinks

    I am using a Macbook Pro 2.4MHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3.
That's the one with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M and the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT.
Using the Nvidia GeForce 9400M, as my default video card, seems to make my screen blinks. That is random.
Apple's Hardware Test show no problems.
When I am using the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT the screen blinks stops.
I am sure that all started after updating to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.5.
Is this a software problem or there is a problem with the Nvidia GeForce 9400M chip?
Does any is experiencing the same problem?
+the problem withe the screen blinking is quite old. I am mostly using my Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT as my default video card with no problem at all, but I want to be able to use my Nvidia GeForce 9400M because of the better battery life.
    Any help will be valuable.+
    Tom.

I have the same issue with mine and sadly I missed the date to get Applecare on this machine (they usually call but this time around they didn't).  ***** that I didn't get this resolved before my warranty ran out .. I'm certainly not going to shell out for a replacement motherboard out of pocket.  I now use the 9600 graphics exclusively and can almost watch my battery drop by the minute.
On a side note I'm not very impressed with the quality control Apple has had with their portables in the last few years.  I bought this unit refurbished and it took two units to get one that worked properly, and even then this one never did as it's had this video blinking issue since day one.  The problem is I didn't really notice it until recently when I started using it running more often on battery and decided to use the mobile chipset to save battery time.  This is the third MBP I've had and their 3rd MBP that's had motherboard issues.
When it comes time to replace this one I'm seriously considering going with a macbook air or something else.  Can't justify spending the money on more MBP's with such terrible track records.

  • Can I use a flat screen monitor with my Power Mac G$?

Can I connect my Power Mac G4 (model M5183) to a modern flat screen monitor? I already tried it with a small flat screen TV which works fine with my MacBook Pro but couldn't make it work with the G4. I only need the G4 for a SCSI slide scanner that I use occasionally, and would love to get rid of the mostrosity of a monitor that came with the G4. I've updated the processor in the G4 to 1 GHz and run it with OS 10.5.8.

Hi Ron, what ports are on the G4's Video card? VGA, DVI, or AGP?
    Which Video card?
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware>Graphics/Displays and report like this...

Then, it may be possible to enable Screen Sharing on the G4 & control it all through the MBP.

  • QuadG5 with NVidia 7800GT

I bought a PowerMac G5 Quad a year ago and now I am experiencing problems with what I assume is a graphic card problem.
My screen keeps going on and off (power save mode) every 2-3 seconds and sometimes it stays off for even a minute so as it seems the graphic card is not transmitting.
The card is an NVidia GeForce 7800GT.
    Has anyone experienced similar problems;
A search on the net revealed (matching serial number) that there is another problem with power supply that affects my mac too.
While this is happening the mac otherwise seems to work perfect no matter how much load you put on it.
This is my only development machine currently and I am hit hard. I had to borrow a laptop to write this down and to track down necessary support information. I don't even know who to call , this is the first time I am in such situation.
    thank you
    Nikolas

    Hi Nikolaos Nikou-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
First make sure to double check all of your connections both at the monitor end and at the G5 end. This could be as simple as a loose or bad cable.
It is also possible that the graphics card is overheating-have you opened up the machine and cleaned it lately? Pay particular attention to the heat sink on the graphics card itself. Some folks have had luck with simply pulling the card out and plugging it back in again. Make sure no dust or dirt falls into the card slot if you do this.
This link explains what to do about getting your machine repaired under the repair extension program: Power Mac G5 Repair Extension Program for Power Supply Issues.
Please note that there are specific symptoms under which the program applies.
If all else fails it may indeed be the graphics card itself and replacement may be your only option.
    Luck-

  • Performance issues with flashed 7800GT (G5)

    Hey,
I recently flashed a PC 7800GT with the 128K OEM NVidia ROM. It's one of the cards with a physical 128K ROM chip, so no worries there. However, it doesn't deliver the performance I expected. I have a Late 2005 2.0 DC, 10GB DDR2 and use Leopard 10.5.8.
This is what OS X puts out (german):
    NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT:
      Chipsatz-Modell:    GeForce 7800GT
      Typ:    Monitor
      Bus:    PCIe
      Steckplatz:    SLOT-1
      PCIe-Lane-Breite:    x16
      VRAM (gesamt):    256 MB
      Hersteller:    NVIDIA (0x10de)
      Geräte-ID:    0x0092
      Versions-ID:    0x00a1
      ROM-Version:    2152.2
Performance issues are: I can't seem to reach frame rates that are anywhere near the results provided by barefeats. Quake 3 runs with approx 200fps in 1600x1200x32 (I expected 300+ fps), Quake 4 and UT2004 run okay, but not on high settings with high resolutions. So, not equivalent to what you wouldd expect from the system's specs) Same goes for Colin McRae Rallye. Now, I remember reading about performance issues in 10.5.8 with the flashed ROM since it doesn't seem to be a 1:1 copy of the original one. I didn't try it in Tiger since I don't exactly want to go back from Leopard. Am I right that this is probably an issue of the "OEM ROM" (from the macelite)? Does anyone have the real deal in terms of 7800GT ROMs and could provide me with a link?
    Br

    Hi-
If you send me an email via my website, I can send you a couple of ROMs that might work better.
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/All_Things_PPC.html
Problem with the flashed 256 MB GT, though, is that Leopard runs slow.
    Bad driver interaction.....
The 512 MB GTX is the way to go........

My Macbook Pro Has A Nvidia Geforce GPU And The Screen Won't Work When I Turn It On

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the computer, does it start properly? Do you hear the startup chime and everything else? If so, there may be a display or GPU problem. First, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If you have an external display, connect it to your computer and see if it works. If not, it's a GPU issue. If it works, it's a display issue. In both cases, I recommend you to take it to an Apple Store or reseller
