2009 Macbook Pro goes to OS X Utilities screen after every attempt at restart
I recently purchased a refurbished MacBook Pro from another seller and have been updating the software, since it came installed with Leopard 10.5.8. The cursor randomly got stuck on the rainbow loading wheel for a while so I restarted the laptop with the power button and it just brought me to the Utilities screen with options for what to do next. I don't have a time machine back up for this computer yet but I do have the installation disk for Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (it's currently running at Mountain Lion 10.8.1). Everything on the HD is okay but I have no idea what went wrong or how to restart it and have it run normally again. Will the SL disk do anything beneficial? Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I put in the Snow Leopard Disk and it gets past the installation settings but when it gets to where I select the disk to install it, there's a yellow triangle with exclamation mark in it over the hard drive icon and says "Mac OS X cannot start up from this disk". Is the hard drive locked? I don't know what to do next, again any help is appreciated I'm desperate

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive. -
MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive
After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo. Do I need to re-install the OS?
The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
5) Select Re-install OSX.
6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).
Hope this helps!

Macbook Pro medio 2012 keeps lagging & showing beachballs after every action
I have a MacBook Pro medio 2012 for a few months now, it always worked good for me but since a few days all my actions make it to lagg and after a while I get beachballs every several seconds and all for all actions I have to wait a few seconds for it even to respond at all.
It runs on an i7 processor and has 8 GB RAM so that cannot be the issue, besides that has it always been a fast laptop.
I also run boothcamp on it with windows on that participation, when i use that it does not lagg. So is has something to do with the MACOSX part, since windows runs fine on it.
The lagg came out of nothing, I just run a webbrowser (FireFox) and Spotify, mail and iCal are on the background, but those can't be the problem.
I hope any one has a solution for me.I have followed them and I noted that at his step about RAM he says: 'If the page outs value is too high – more than 10% of the page ins value – then that is an indication that you could benefit from more RAM. If it isn’t that high, adding more RAM won’t help.'
Here is an image with my stats:
As you can see the page-outs are far higher than 10% of the page ins, and I am currently just running light programs, with the only exeption maybe of FireFox, but that should not make the diffence.
The problem I have now is: How can this be? Since I have 8GB RAM and it used to be no problem. Also note that I have no problems running Windows, windows runs just fine, via boothcamp. -
Restart on Macbook Pro 2010 model takes forever, unresponsive screen after restart.
My MacBook Pro takes 10 mins to restart and after it does restart the screen is unresponsive for atleast 10-15 mins. Then after it does get responsive, laptop is very slow !! Very often the screen just freezes when i am working, then slowly paints to a shade of transparent black and says "You must restart the computer, please hold down the power button" in about 5 different languages. I am not able to identify the issue. Is it a hard disk issue?

This just started happening randomly a couple months ago. Now it happens on every sleep or screen saver instance. I cannot trace it to a specific OSX update. I have gone as far as a full OSX recovery and restoration of Time Machine backup. Where can I look to get to the bottom of this?

2009 Macbook Pro 13" Yosemite Display Port Freeze
I have a
2009 Macbook Pro 13"
2.26 Core Duo
8gb Ram
Nvidia Geforce 9400M 256mb
Yosemite 10.10.1
Dell 24" Monitor run through apple display port to DVI Adapter
Sony 32" HD TV run through aftermarket display port to HDMI cable
I've been running Yosemite since it was released without any issues. I was calibrating my monitor using spyder3 pro. When the calibration finished I was asked to save the ICC profile when I got an error. The file wasn't able to save properly. I did not write down the error code and at this point i'm not able to recreate it.
I restarted the computer and connected the Dell monitor. The colors that showed were all cartoon yellow and blue with slight outlines of windows but not legible in all areas. More troubling is the fact that the computer itself would start the spinning beach ball as soon as the external monitor was connected. Mouse still moves but nothing is clickable.
I did a hard reset of the computer without the monitor connected. Everything worked fine. I updated the Spyder3 software and calibrated the internal monitor with no issues. I physically deleted the ICC profiles for the Dell monitor. Still the same issue after restart.
I've experimented with the issue a bit more. If I connect the external dell monitor through the DVI Converter I get the same issues stated above. When I disconnect it, the computer hangs for a minute but resets the internal display. I still have the beach ball at this point. If I hover over open programs and right click I can force close them. Once all programs open have been force closed and the finder has been relaunched everything works ok again but the bar at the top of the screen is all grayed out unless I restart the computer. Not the menus just the time, background programs, battery life, sound. search does work.
I've Attached and calibrated my HD TV through the same display port. It seems to hang for a minute but then converts sizes. It did show the the yellow and blue screen for a few seconds once but then corrected itself to display properly.
I've heard similar but not exactly the same symptoms related to Yosemite upgrade.
I'm having trouble eliminating variables here.
Is anyone else experiencing issues like this?
Can anyone shed some light on what is going on here?
Cheers,
ChrisWhat appears to be happening is the conputer is trying to sync with the display... over and over. Eventually it MAY succeed, more often than not a power off / on of the display and a reboot of the system resolves the issue. There are no drivers from Samsung to support OS-X. Apparently the change from Snow Leopard to Lion caused the problem, and it persists with Mountain Lion.

I am having a problem with my 2009 Macbook Pro
Hello Everyone,
I am having a problem with my 2009 Macbook Pro . A few weeks ago I plugged it into the charger after running it down to reserve battery power. It appeared to be charging, but then all of a sudden my clock and calender reset to year 2000 and then my computer blacked out and went dead. I tried to boot it up but nothing happened (literally nothing). I have tried 3 different chargers on it, but all I get is a faint green light and even after hours it still won't boot up. I have tried replacing the battery, but still nothing happens.
Any Ideas? I am pretty desperate to get my computer back up and running before school finals. You may have to see if an authorized Apple service specialist can check over
the charging system (magsafe dc-in board, power adapter, and MacBook/Pro)
and test or run a diagnostic on it, to be sure there is no damage or failed parts.
When you attached the adapter to charge the computer, after it said it was going
to reserve power, did you shut down open applications and stop using the MB/Pro?
That would've been the thing to do, since the margin of run-time near the bottom
of the power cycle can be wrong by the gauge estimate, it can just quit.
While I have not researched your year/model/series in detail, I do know some
models of Apple portable computers have a small battery or capacitor on the
logic board, separate from the main power battery; it may need replacement.
A service provider w/ Apple training & parts would be a likely resource to fix it.
Good luck & happy computing! -
I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise? During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Mid-2009 MacBook Pro sees internal SATA hard drive, but will not boot from or format
I inherited a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53 GHz model) with a very strange issue.
It first presented itself as not being able to boot from the internal SATA hard drive that came with the computer. Nothing I tried could get it to boot, so I assumed the file system was corrupted beyond repair and booted from a CD to try to format the drive. Disk Utility on the CD would not format the drive, giving me strange error messages like "Unable to write to the last block of the device".
At this point I figured the drive itself must be toast, so I pulled it out and put another known-good SATA hard drive in, booted from CD, and attempted to format. Again, same error messages and an unsuccesful format.
So I had the bright idea of formatting one of the drives in an external enclosure and then putting it in the MBP to see if OS X would even install. No dice. Get a cryptic error message before installation even begins.
So I installed OS X on the drive in the external enclosure and put it in the MBP, and it attempts to boot, but never goes anywhere.
So to sum up, the symptoms I'm seeing:
MacBook Pro CAN see internal SATA hard drives.
MacBook Pro WILL NOT boot from any internal SATA hard drive and cannot format or install OS X to any internal SATA hard drive.
MacBook Pro WILL boot from any CD or external device and seems to work properly otherwise.
At this point I'm thinking it's one of two things: the hard drive ribbon cable or the SATA controller on the logic board.
Since the MacBook Pro seems to work completely fine other than this one issue, and will boot properly from both external devices and the CD (also a SATA device), I'm thinking and hoping that it's just the hard drive ribbon cable. From my searches online, I've heard that this batch of MacBook Pros is known to have issues with the hard drive ribbon cable, but it seems in most cases this manifests itself by the Mac not being able to see a drive at all.
I've done quite a bit of troubleshooting to get to this point, but right now I'm just looking for any feedback at all. Specifically I'd love to know a way I can easily test to see whether it's the logic board or the cable.UPDATE: An interesting development!
I just tried a third known-good SATA hard drive, one which I believe supports SATA I only (but I'm not sure), and unlike the other drives that the Mac sees but cannot properly interact with, the Mac can't even see this one when I put it inside.
Frustrating as this may be, I believe I'm actually getting closer to a solution since my symptoms now appear to be closely aligned with people having SATA ribbon cable issues.

Can I sell my 2009 MacBook Pro?
2009 MacBook Pro - 13.3"
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor;
2GB of RAM
160GB HD
After some diagnostic help from a couple IT guys at work, I figured out that my motherboard is officially dead. The body of the computer is in good shape (minor scratches and slight dent). The computer powers on, but it cannot read the hard drive. Looking at repair costs in the realm of $700, I'm most likely going to buy new. So to get at my real question, is this computer worth anything?I don't know your exact model, but it looks like you can go all the way to Mavericks.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5842
On the RAM, go to www.crucial.com with your model info and enter it into their selector. I think you can go to 8GB. The cost isn't that much. I wouldn't bother with 4GB if you can go to 8. The speed benefit with RAM is when you have multiple programs open. If you keep several open at a time it'll help. If all you do is browse in Safari then it won't do all that much.
A word of advice... some people have reported issues with older machines when upgrading. I have a 2010 and had no problems at all. However, it'd be a good idea to get an external drive and back up your current system completely with Carbon Copy Cloner before you do the upgrade. It's very easy to go back then if you're not happy. -
Problems with WD7500BPVT on mid 2009 macbook pro
My mid 2009 macbook pro got dented just enough to break the hard drive so I'm trying to replace it. I've got a Western Digital 750GB Blue Scorpio WD7500BPVT but I can't get Snow Leopard to install. The partition process goes fine but when I start the install it goes really slowly until hours later it says that the system cannot be installed. The same thing happens when I try to restore from Time Machine, though thankfully that process fails fter about 30 minutes. The disc seems to be working fine, I installed Linux on it in a Thinkpad with no problems as a test. I also pulled the hdd out of my girlfriends macbook, put it into my MBP and that booted and ran fine. I've seen some talk about rolling back efi to an older version, could that be my problem? Should I just give up on this hdd and find something else? Here is most of the installer log from one attempt to restore from time machine in case that helps. Thanks

Jan 10 08:44:51 localhI'm quite sure my MBP is alright aside from the hard drive as I've spent the better part of the last two days swapping drives around between the computers I have available and testing every scenario I can think of. The damaged hard drive doesn't work in any computer, my MBP, my girlfriends MB, or connected to a linux pc through a usb, so it's toast. My girlfriend's MB hard drive runs just fine in my MBP, I wiped and installed it in my MBP to test the dvd drive and I played some videos and ran some apps and everything works normally so I don't think anything else is damaged. The WD7500BPVT installs and runs fine in my girlfriends MB, the only problem arises when I try to put the WD7500BPVT into my MBP, bit to install OS X or after I've installed OS X onto it with my girlfriends computer. Thanks anyway.

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro which I have upgraded a few things on. I have updated to Yosemite and am having problems with getting my laptop to come out of sleep mode, and to start when shut off. Any ideas of what this might be or how to correct it? Is this more probably a hardware issue or software?
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Late-2009 Macbook Pro 10.9.2 Random Shut Down
My Macbook has started intermittently shutting down while in use anywhere from 10 min. to 4hrs after startup. I took it to the Genius bar where they advised me to unistall Chrome and remove several Launch Daemons. After removing those, my computer ran well for 3 days after which it began shutting down again. Today it began to shut down (screen off, indicator light off), resist restart (would not power back on for over 15 mins), and then switch back on without going through the normal startup procedures. AHT said that everything was in working order and I have already reset the SMC. Currently I can't keep my computer on for more than a couple minutes at a time so I will post my kernel panic log ASAP.
Here is my EtreCheck:
