2012 MacMini FW connection oddities

I am currently using a latest gen MacMini, OS 10.8.1, connected to 2 external fw400 HDs and a LaCie FW400 DVD burner (internal unit: Tsstcorp CDDVDW SH_S222A).
No problems with both HDs.
The DVD burner has behaved in strange ways since I swapped my old G4 MacMini (10.5.8) for the new one (nifty machine, nonetheless). I connected directly to the Mini using a LINDY fw800 to 400 dongle and the rest of the fw chain is connected to the LaCie DVD drive.
The dongle itself seems to be OK, I tried it with many fw400 units in one-to-one configurations, with no problems.
To begin with, from time to time the drive 'wakes up' automatically as if looking for a disk, though there is no actual disk and nobody did nothing to open the tray. Second, from time to time in order to eject disks I need to do it through the 'force eject' window (forgive my translation from the Italian OS...), because it seems some app is still using it (all apps are closed, then I suppose it is the Finder).
I also have CD and DVD burning problems with Toast 11.1, Burn 2.5.1. RipIt fails if reading a DVD through the FW400 and succeds only if using the USB2 ports (but it is painfully slow!). I am actually investigating more carefully with their support services on these app related failures, but I have more than a...feeling that something is getting wrong somewhere in:
10.8.1 and/or MacMini FW management. I obviously hope it is just a matter or driver software, to be fixed in some future .2 or .3 OS update.
Anybody any hints?
Thanks

Ok, I am getting more and more sure of my supposition, now I have more data:
- Getting the LaCie last in the FW chain neither resulted in any change, nor excluding the fw800-400 dongle by connecting the MacMini directly to a HD Drive with both FW800 and FW400 ports.
FW CHAIN: MacMini---FW800 HD-----FW400 HD----FW400 LaCie DVD drive.
- Swapping the PSU unit for an identical one, also had no results: same 'time-to-time access to drive with no disc'
- furthermore, when using the DVD drive in USB2 mode with the original PSU, everything has been fine; I also connected to a Windows PC with no problems or strange disc access attempts.
I had no occasion to check Toast, Burn and RipIt behaviour but soon I will have some material ready to be burnt on DVD - will let you know -

External display on late 2012 macmini does not go to sleep, instead the content freezes. After Pram reset it does go to sleep, till it undergoes next system sleep cycle (hibernatemode 25). I need to suspend it to disk because it is an offgrid setup and the power needs to be cut between Sessions. Display is connected to the hdmi port. Runing OS 10.8.4. Reinstalling did not help, neither. I have struggled with this for half a year now, it accured about 2 month after first use of the machine.

The bewildering thing is that through a pram reset i can get the display to sleep once again...
    Maybe a hardware prob?
Might want to check using the thunderbolt port instead, as soon as i can afford the adaptor.
Anyway i will go to offline world for some time now, on a crazy bicycle tour trough remote eastern europe.
I would love to hear from you on an occasion of a peek to cyberworld during my trip!

  • 2012 MacMini and iPad 4 - Low USB Power Issue

I have a freshly installed 2012 MacMini that I am trying to set up WiFi Sync on a new iPad 4 but I keep getting a low power on USB warning when I plug it in. Is anyone else having this problem? All that I have plugged into the MacMini is a HP DeskJet 4140 and in another port the Apple Aluminum Keyboard (with Apple Mouse plugged into one of the keyboard ports). I would have thought that the Mini would be able to handle this with no problems.

Great news, thanks for the report!

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
    2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
    Any advice would be helpful!

We have a windows storage server 2012 (HP storage server) in our domain. All of sudden We had a issue, connecting the server shares using the share name only from XP machines, but it is connecting through IP address with a delayed response. We are getting
the below error message from all the windows XP SP2 machines in our domain.
"\\<share name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have a access permissions.

But it is connecting while we are trying from windows 7 machines.  Also the other server shares (Windows 2003 server) are connecting without any issues using the share name. In addition to this we gave everyone permission for this share. And it worked
well before but not now. Could you please suggest any solution for this complex issue?

  • SCCM 2012 console cannot connect to the site

Last Friday for some unknown reason my SCCM console stopped connecting to the site. Reboots of both site servers (MP and database) did nothing. The error is the same as this picture:  http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q0A5GonM498/UCDkreFxc9I/AAAAAAAAAQk/67AQ5tGW_d4/s1600/SCCM%2BConsole.JPG.
I went home for the weekend and on Monday I was actually able to connect to the site. It would take about an hour, but finally the console would load, with the correct information from the site. If I clicked on a different area in the console it would take
forever (about 20 minutes), but it would finally change to that view as well. In troubleshooting I followed all the steps in the attached article, except rebuilding the MOFs.  (http://schadda.blogspot.com/2012/08/how-to-fix-issues-related-with_7.html)
After finding that none of that helped I installed CU4 hoping that would help. It completed, but with errors in building the four packages (console, x86, x64 and server). Now the console goes back to the original error and won't connect at all, including
    from the actual server.
I have checked and there does not appear to be any bottleneck between the two servers. Network is as it was previously and I can still telnet to the SQL port (1433) from the Management Point.
    Infrastructure:
2 servers, running Server 2012 R2 - one server is running everything except the SQL services; SQL Services are running on the second server
SCCM is at 2012 R2 level (now at CU4, was at CU3 at start of problem)
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Can SQL Server (2008 R2/2012) Integration Services connect to Business Objects / Hyperion directly?

    Hi,
I have a situation where I need to pull data from Business Objects and
    Hyperion using
SSIS (2008 R2/2012). I did some pro-active research on how to go about implementing this on a couple of Forums and could only figure out the below solution.
We can create an ODBC DSN / connection for Business Objects and that can be used by SSIS as a connection manager to directly link to the Business
    Objects Universe. (http://www.forumtopics.com/busobj/viewtopic.php?p=622922&sid=fbb54541e1daacf9714a5672b5ed1314)
Question 1 - Has anyone tried to implement this in past? Is this possible directly or can be achieved through some workarounds? sharing inputs/experience on this will be highly appreciated!
Question 2 - If this possible in any way , how to get this thing set-up in an environment where SSIS and BO are residing on two different domains/networks. Any way to establish a connection from SSIS
    to the BO instance/server?
Would really appreciate if anyone can help me out with this issue.

  • Does Multipoint Server 2012 Support Remote Connections?

I'm currently running Server 2008 R2 Foundation, and am considering an upgrade.  I originally thought I'd move to 2012 R2 Essentials, but found that it only allows 2 concurrent users, and RDS is not available (what a joke!).  Anyway, someone suggested
that I try Multipoint Server 2012, but from all I can dig up, I can't find any reference to VPN or RDS.  I'm a very small (2 person) business located in rural north Georgia, but I not only have local users (two of us), but also two or more clients in
south Florida connecting to my server via RDS.
Does anyone know whether or not Multipoint 2012 will support RDS type connections from afar - i.e. not on the local network?  I'd be very grateful for some clear concrete information about that.
    Thank you.
    Capt. Dinosaur

Hi Livi, thanks for your response.
"I saw your post on the WMS forums and it might be worth downloading the evaluation and giving it a try if you have the chance.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35821"
Thank you, I do intend to do just that just as soon as I can.
"That said, as another poster mentioned in that thread, there are still some limitations with regard to not having your domain controller on the same machine as your RDS role. "
That, of course brings up another question in my mind; can Multipoint be in a Workgroup, so that it's not a domain controller?  I have only one server box, and would like to keep it that way for both financial and spatial reasons.  I simply
want to upgrade to the latest server technology with the version that fits my "NANO" size business.
Also, I've yet been able to find CLEAR information about Licensing Multipoint.  I've found lots of places that tell me that I have to use OEM or Open licensing - whatever that means - but no explanation of what licenses are required and MOST IMPORTANTLY
how much do the bloody licenses cost.  Can anyone enlighten me about that???????????

  • SCVMM 2012: Unable to connect to the VMM management server localhost:8100

    Hi everyone
I have difficulties connecting with the Admin UI to the SCVMM server running on the same machine. This is the error message I see:
Unable to connect to the VMM management server localhost. The Virtual Machine Manager service on that server did not respond.
Verify that Virtual Machine Manager has been installed on the server and that the Virtual Machine Manager service is running.
Then try to connect again. If the problem persists, restart the Virtual Machine Manager service.
    ID: 1602
I checked that the service is running and checked with the Resource Monitor that vmmservice.exe is really listening on port 8100. The Resource Monitor also shows some traffic between itself, the service and the DC. But all traffic dies down after a few seconds,
then nothing happens for a minute, then I get the above error message. The only SCVMM related entry in the eventlog is this (was logged when I manually tried restarting the service):
Failed to stop service. System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
    at Microsoft.VirtualManager.Engine.VirtualManagerService.OnStop()
    at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.DeferredStop()
But I guess that entry is of no help. Other important things that might be relevant:
This installation worked fine three months ago. Since then only the automatic updates were installed.
DPM (the 2012 CTP for Win8) is installed on the same server.
After it didn't work I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 (offered by Microsoft Update)
SCVMM is part of a small test installation (~10 VMs or so), no valuable data, so there's no risk when messing around
Control panel shows the version number 3.1.1042.0 for "Microsoft System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager".
Is there anything else I could try? How can SCVMM stop to work, all by itself? Leaves a sour taste...
    Cheers,
    Simon

When such odd behaviour occur, it is a good tip to start a VMM trace to see where things are actually going wrong. And suck files is interestin for MS support once the obvious things for errors, are eliminated out of the picture.
VMM has dependencies such as SQL, permissions and service accounts. All of these variables does
also have dependencies that should be verified. Verify that the account for the service does is not locked/expired pwd, that the SQL is up and running - and actually is working. There is a lot of logs to check in order to determine the root cause of
    this behaviour.

  • SCCM 2012: failed to connect to distribution point

    Hi folks,
I have an intermittent issue and can't figure out the reason so far.
I have a primary server and multiple distribution points. The primary does not have a DP configured. When I deploy a new distribution point, I have the following messages:
Distribution Manager failed to connect to the distribution point. Check your network and firewall settings.
    and
Distribution Manager failed to find or create the defined share or volume on distribution point.
    DistMgr.log shows the following:

However, after a while (couple of hours), it looks like everything is distributed on the DP. But this message keeps on coming back during the course of the day and every time a new DP is deployed.
I checked permissions, IIS, WMI, but I can't find out the cause of this behavior. I have events about WMI (id 5605) but I can connect to the WMI workspace (root\MicrosoftIISv2) with no issues.
Can anyone shed some light on this please? It would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Safdar.

To clarify: it's not enough to tick "Windows Authentication" in Add Roles/Features - it actually has to be enabled in IIS configuration.
There are also suggestions to run mofcomp.exe smsdpprov.mof

  • SQL 2012 Linked Server connection from SQL 2000

    Hi,
Does anyone know if it's possible to create a linked server connection in SQL 2000 to a SQL 2012 instance?
If so, which provider should I use?
    Many Thanks,

    Hi Shanky,
I'm afraid you misunderstood my Q. The above posts show how to create a linked server connection FROM SQL2012 --> SQL 2000.
I'm trying to create a linked server connection FROM SQL 2000 --> SQL 2012.
Does anyone know if it's possible?

  • DPM 2012 Protection Agent Connection Failure

I was successfully protecting a Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent. Server with my M.S. System Center 2012 R2 DPM R2 Server until today.  The only changes I know about are the fact that this 2008 server was promoted to a domain controller today using the same
name and I.P. Address.  It appears that the DCPromo process has broken DPM protection somehow.  Is it true that a "dcpromo" of a protected server can cause DPM Agent failures?  If so what is the preferred method to fix this problem.
I'm hoping that I don't really have to stop and clean up the current protection for this server and then start over again.  Does anyone have a solution for this problem?  Here are the errors I'm getting:
    Affected area: ServerName.DomainName
    Occurred since: 1/13/2015 8:30:02 AM
Description: The DPM protection agent on ServerName.DomainName could not be contacted. Subsequent protection activities for this computer may fail if the connection is not established. The attempted contact failed for the following reason: (ID 3122)
The protection agent operation failed because it could not access the protection agent on ServerName.DomainName. ServerName.DomainName may be running DPM, or the DPM protection agent may have been installed by another DPM server. (ID 302 Details: )
    More information
Recommended action: Uninstall DPM or the DPM protection agent from ServerName.DomainName and install the DPM protection agent again from the computer that you want to use to protect the computer.
On the Agents tab in the Management task area, check the status of the agent.
Resolution: To dismiss the alert, click below
    Inactivate
    Protection agent version: 4.2.1254.0
Error: Data Protection Manager Error ID: 270
The agent operation failed on ServerName.DomainName because DPM could not communicate with the DPM protection agent. The computer may be protected by another DPM server, or the protection agent may have been uninstalled on the protected computer.
If ServerName.DomainName is a workgroup server, the password for the DPM user account could have been changed or may have expired.
Recommended action: Check the following to troubleshoot this issue:
    1) If the agent is not installed on ServerName.DomainName, run DpmAgentInstaller.exe with this DPM computer as a parameter. For details, see the DPM Deployment Guide.
    2) To attach the computer correctly to this DPM server, run the SetDpmServer tool with the -Add option on the protected computer.
    3) If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, remove the protected data sources on this computer from active protection. Then, remove the entry of this computer from the Agents tab in the Management
    task area.
    4) If ServerName.DomainName is a workgroup server, run SetDpmServer with the -UpdatePassword flag on the protected computer and Update-NonDomainServerInfo.ps1 on the DPM server to update the password.
    5) If the DPM server and the protected computer are not in the same domain, ensure that there is a two-way trust setup between the two domains.
Note:  I tried running the setdpmserver tool but got the following message:
SetDpmServer failed with errorcode =0x80070534, error says: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.
I also tried the attach agents option but DPM tells me that there is already an agent installed.
I also tried to manually start the DPMRA service on the client but it fails with error code 1168.
Any helpfull information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    MPeterson

    Hi,
    Try the following:
Uninstall the agent from the protected computer.
    Restart the computer.
    Install the DPM-agent manually.
    Re run the SetDPMServer command.
    Try start the service.
If the problem still exist, please look into the following steps:
Verify the COM+ permissions for the DPM agent on the protected server. There could be a mismatch in the permissions:
Click START / Administrative Tools / Component Services
Expand Component Services / Computers / My Computer / DCOM Config
Right click on the "DPM RA Services" and choose properties. Verify that under the Security tab / Launch and Activation Permissions you got Customize marked, click the "Edit..." button in the ACL you should see the computer account for
    your DPM server.
If it's not present add it and mark all allow boxes and try to start the service again.
You should also verify that your DPM-server computer account is a member of these two local security groups on the protected server:
    DPMRADCOMTrustedMachines
    DPMRADmTrustedMachines

My MacMini has stopped connecting both to my keyboard and mouse (both are BTwireles).  Ergo, when I power up the computer, cannot log in as no keyboard input is recognized.  Put new batteries, see light come up and tried pairing again, tried usb keyboard, all to no avail.  Any suggestions besides taking the MacMini to the shop?

Ok if Ive correctly understood, even the USB Keyboard and mouse are not working?

  • Mac Air 2012 wi-fi connect

    Hello
The following popup error appears when I open Mac Air 2012 10.9.1 cover from sleep even though I’m close to router and my network name is selected in Wi-Fi menu:
"Wi-Fi network mynet” could not be joined.  option to move closer to wireless router or run diagnostics..."
When I reboot there’s no prob.  The Genius at Apple store did not find an issue with hardware and removed 6 network setting .plist files but problem persists.
Wondering if this is occurring to anyone else or if there’s a fix or known issue.
    Thanks

    Errata an other possible "fixes"
unchecking "Wake for WiFi network access in Energy prefs (I originally, incorrectly, wrote Ethernet access)
a PRAM reset (hold down the command -option-P-R keys while booting)
a SMC reset -Power off computer and keep it plugged in to the power source. Hold the Shift, Control, Option, and Power keys simultaneously for 2 seconds and release. The device should not power on.
Deleting the system configuration folder from Library/Preferences/folder
(How to create new preferred network from above)
Boot into Safe Mode by pressing and holding the Shift key right after pressing and holding the power button. Next, open System Preferences, then Network, and click the Assist Me button at the bottom of the window. Finally, go through the process of creating a new Wi-Fi network, choose your network, enter the Wi-Fi password, and reboot your machine. After that, you should be able to connect to your Wi-Fi network again.
Reset Service Order: Go to System Preferences > Network. Click on the Location drop-down menu and select ‘Edit Locations’. Add a new location titled ‘Home’ (or Work or Joe's place - whatever) Click on the tool icon (lower right, next to + - from the dropdown menu click ’Set Service Order…’ option Reorder the services so that Wi-Fi is first (click and drag WI-Fi to top, or drag others under Wi-F)  and click ‘OK’
    . Clcik ‘Apply’
Different users report success with each of these steps... .yet no one step seems to be a universal fix.
