DPM 2012 Protection Agent Connection Failure

I was successfully protecting a Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent. Server with my M.S. System Center 2012 R2 DPM R2 Server until today.  The only changes I know about are the fact that this 2008 server was promoted to a domain controller today using the same
name and I.P. Address.  It appears that the DCPromo process has broken DPM protection somehow.  Is it true that a "dcpromo" of a protected server can cause DPM Agent failures?  If so what is the preferred method to fix this problem.
I'm hoping that I don't really have to stop and clean up the current protection for this server and then start over again.  Does anyone have a solution for this problem?  Here are the errors I'm getting:
Affected area: ServerName.DomainName
Occurred since: 1/13/2015 8:30:02 AM
Description: The DPM protection agent on ServerName.DomainName could not be contacted. Subsequent protection activities for this computer may fail if the connection is not established. The attempted contact failed for the following reason: (ID 3122)
The protection agent operation failed because it could not access the protection agent on ServerName.DomainName. ServerName.DomainName may be running DPM, or the DPM protection agent may have been installed by another DPM server. (ID 302 Details: )
More information
Recommended action: Uninstall DPM or the DPM protection agent from ServerName.DomainName and install the DPM protection agent again from the computer that you want to use to protect the computer.
On the Agents tab in the Management task area, check the status of the agent.
Resolution: To dismiss the alert, click below
Inactivate
Protection agent version: 4.2.1254.0
Error: Data Protection Manager Error ID: 270
The agent operation failed on ServerName.DomainName because DPM could not communicate with the DPM protection agent. The computer may be protected by another DPM server, or the protection agent may have been uninstalled on the protected computer.
If ServerName.DomainName is a workgroup server, the password for the DPM user account could have been changed or may have expired.
Recommended action: Check the following to troubleshoot this issue:
1) If the agent is not installed on ServerName.DomainName, run DpmAgentInstaller.exe with this DPM computer as a parameter. For details, see the DPM Deployment Guide.
2) To attach the computer correctly to this DPM server, run the SetDpmServer tool with the -Add option on the protected computer.
3) If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, remove the protected data sources on this computer from active protection. Then, remove the entry of this computer from the Agents tab in the Management
task area.
4) If ServerName.DomainName is a workgroup server, run SetDpmServer with the -UpdatePassword flag on the protected computer and Update-NonDomainServerInfo.ps1 on the DPM server to update the password.
5) If the DPM server and the protected computer are not in the same domain, ensure that there is a two-way trust setup between the two domains.
Note:  I tried running the setdpmserver tool but got the following message:
SetDpmServer failed with errorcode =0x80070534, error says: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.
I also tried the attach agents option but DPM tells me that there is already an agent installed.
I also tried to manually start the DPMRA service on the client but it fails with error code 1168.
Any helpfull information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
MPeterson

Hi,
Try the following:
Uninstall the agent from the protected computer.
Restart the computer.
Install the DPM-agent manually.
Re run the SetDPMServer command.
Try start the service.
If the problem still exist, please look into the following steps:
Verify the COM+ permissions for the DPM agent on the protected server. There could be a mismatch in the permissions:
Click START / Administrative Tools / Component Services
Expand Component Services / Computers / My Computer / DCOM Config
Right click on the "DPM RA Services" and choose properties. Verify that under the Security tab / Launch and Activation Permissions you got Customize marked, click the "Edit..." button in the ACL you should see the computer account for
your DPM server.
If it's not present add it and mark all allow boxes and try to start the service again.
You should also verify that your DPM-server computer account is a member of these two local security groups on the protected server:
DPMRADCOMTrustedMachines
DPMRADmTrustedMachines

  • DPM 2012 R2 agent update on Windows 2003 server x64 - Exchange

According to the release notes on http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2014/04/23/now-available-update-rollup-2-for-system-center-2012-r2-data-protection-manager.aspx the following workloads are supported on Win2K3 with DPM2012 R2 UR2:
    SQL 2005
    SQL 2008
    SQL 2008 R2
    SharePoint 2007
Does that mean protecting Exchange 2007 on Win2K3 is no longer an option after upgrading to DPM 2012 R2 (UR2)? It works on DPM 2012 SP1 but I need to know if it will continue to work after upgrading.
(This question follows on from this thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c425421b-b726-4125-82fc-beae8947722c/dpm-2012-r2-agent-update-on-windows-2003-server-x64?forum=dpmsetup which was marked as 'answered')

    Hi,
Yes, Exchange 2007 backup will continue to work. I think that due to the timeframe of the UR2 release not all workloads were able to be re-certified, thus the limit in supported workloads.

Our DPM Server has a 4Gb configured with NicTeaming (SLB - Switch Load Balance), there is no fw between the DPM Server and Protection Servers.
We receive some DCOM errors too:
Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category
Error 25-02-2014 10:17:18 Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM 10009 None DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer server.contoso.com using any of the configured protocols.
We already uninstalled some agents, cleaning folders/files registry and after installed the agents again and performed setdpmserver -dpmservername <dpmserver>
we can ping, we can traceroute, sc query, net view \\server , nothing is blocked...
in DPM console -> Management -> Agents, when we try to refresh the connection the agent status is always "Attempting connection..." if we close and open DPM console the Agent Status is Unknown.
The version of the Agents is 4.2.1270.0
    Is anyone with same problem.
    Thanks in advance

  • DPM 2012 UR3 Agent Update Error: HRESULT E_FAIL...DCOM Error

My DPM Server is Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with a locally installed SQL and DPM Server and fully patched. My Workstations are all Windows 7 Ultimate x64, fully patched. I have manually installed the DPM RTM Agent and pushed the UR2 update from the DPM Server
without any challenges or issues. I have SCEP running with process exclusions for the DPM services on the WS and DPM Server. I’ve been running DPM 2012 RTM and then UR2 without any issues or challenges to-date.
I have recently updated my DPM 2012 Server from UR2 to UR3 and pushed out all the Agent Updates, which appeared to go successfully from the DPM Console perspective. I spot checked a few systems, 1 workstation (WS) and 1 server, everything looked good. A
couple of days after this I noticed 2 of my workstations failed backing up to Tape. I noticed the recovery options available for these WS’s have stopped updating hours after pushing the UR3 Agent update. The 2 WS’s I'm troubleshooting have a little different
scenario. I have 2 other WS’s that were updated in the same manner and are working perfectly.
Both WS cannot connect to the DPM Server and displays this DCOM Error:
"ERROR:ERROR HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."
The 1st WS DPM Client has a Yelow Sign over-lay and "Administrator has not configured backups." when you hover over it.
The 2nd WS does not the Yellow Sign over-lay.
All the properties of the Local DPM Client Console 'Summary and Protected item'  tabs are not updated on the 1st WS but are on the 2nd WS.
    1st WS process:
The Recovery Tab shows the available recover dates to choice from.
I can expand one of the backup dates, folders and copy a file to this system.
I can view my previous recovery Points from the console dating back to when I updated the Agents.
I’ve validated the DCOM settings on both WS's compared to a WS that is working, they are the same.
I uninstalled the agent manually, then copied and reinstalled the new UR3 Agent Version with the same outcome.
I uninstalled the new version and reinstalled the previous version, same error.
I then proceeded with upgrading UR2 agent version installing the UR3 version over the top, same error.
I logged on to this WS as the Domain Admin, removed and reinstalled the UR3 version, same error.
I removed, applied and then re-added the DPM server to the local WS DPM and DCOM Groups.
I removed, applied and then re-added the WS from the Groups on the DPM Server.
I’m able to see, ping and view other backup folders presented on the DPM server on this WS.
In the DPM Console I am able to connect to this Workstation successfully from the Administrative, Agent Space.
The DPMClientProtectionCurr.errlog file shows this repeatedly:

    The 2nd WS Process:
I did not remove or touch the local agent installation because the information is populated on this client’s agent properties fields.
I can see the folder selections I’ve chosen to be backed up by the protection group configuration.
When i open the Agent UI I receive the sam DCOM error.
I also receive a different error message on this WS when I try and do a Sync Now from the General Tab: Failed to trigger synchronization.
I was able to perform a consistency check on this WS that completed successfully from the DPM server.
I’ve validated the networking configuration settings are correct.
    I flushed local DNS cache.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi,
I have a Windows 7 x64 machine that exhibits this problem. It seems that it is not caused on the client side but on the server side.
In our case the server logs the following every time the client tries to connect:

Errors on the client side appear the moment the agent is re-added to the DPM server (I use "connect agent" instead of "install agent"). After that moment I get the message "Error connection to the DPM server. Error: a COM-component returned E_FAIL" every time
I open the DPM client. This is mirrored by the Verify error mentioned above on the server side.
To me it seems that parts of the machine config are still in the MSDB after removal (maybe caused by the registry error). If this client is connected again, the orphaned database entries cause the Verify error
If that's true, how could we get rid of those entries? Would it help to rename the client?

  • DPM 2012 R2 agent update on Windows 2003 server x64

    Hi,
I have an old windows 2003 server x64 protected by DPM 2012 Sp1. After DPM upgrade to 2012 R2 I cannot update DPM Agent on server. If I try to update agent manually error message is : agentsetup.exe is not a valid win32 application.

    command back,
edit: it seems like a reboot is definitely needed to get it working
got it working like described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2958100/en-us

  • DPM 2012 - Protect Exchange 2007 in untrusted domain (either via Creds or Certificates)

    Hi,
I am trying to protect an Exchange 2007 Server which is in an untrusted domain.
I have tried using both credentials (isNonDomainServer) and via Certificates and have no joy.  Both methods work in terms of getting the agent installed and communicating with DPM.  The agent shows OK in the console and I can browse
fine when creating a new PG.
The problem I have is that "All Exchange Storage Groups" is not available as a selection to backup, obviously neither are any of the information stores.
First question, is backup of Exchange supported in an untrusted domain?  This says it is:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757801.aspx  but I read conflicting advice elsewhere.
Second question, this is the biggie - any ideas on how to get Exchange visible as a selection?
    So far I have:
Confirmed that LCR is not configured (I am not sure if it *was* at some point though, because there is a disk on the server labled LCR)
Checked in the DPM agent directory locally and I can see that ExchangeCmdletsWrapperCurr.errlog is created and/or updated when I expand the server name on the DPM server and the server and information stores are listed in the file.  This tells me communication
is fine, and that the DPM agent on the exchange server can "see" exchange
Checked the Exchange VSS writer and it is listed and in a healthy state
    Thanks!

Upgraded to System Centre 2012 R2 and no difference.  I am assuming that its a compatability\support issue, i.e its not supported.  The documentation says otherwise, but its confusing to say the least.

  • DPM 2012 Manual Agent Install Fails

    Hello Everyone,
Using DPM 2012 SP1, I've been stuck on an issue for some time now in trying to get a DPM agent install accomplished on a certain server. The DPM server resides on a parent domain and the server that I am having an issue with is on a child domain. Other servers
on the child domain have installed the agent without issue when doing it manually.
Here is the command I use (as an administrator):
    net use X: \\DPMSERVERNAME.parentdomain.com\c$
    cd /d X:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\agents\RA\4.1.3465.0\amd64\1033
    DPMAgentInstaller_KB2991995_AMD64.exe dpmservername.parentdomain.com
The installation proceeds through the Microsoft License Terms, begins to install and then backs out. The error message that is generated states: "DPMAgentinstaller failed with error code = 0X80070643 error says: fatal error during installation"
In researching the 1708 error within the log file it lead me to the fact that maybe the firewall on the target server was the issue. I
ran this suggested fix on the target server:
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=\"@FirewallAPI.dll,-29502\" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=\"@FirewallAPI.dll,-34251\" new enable=yes
    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=dpmra dir=in program=\"%PROGRAMFILES%\\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\\DPM\\bin\\DPMRA.exe\" profile=Any action=allow
    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=DPMRA_DCOM_135 dir=in action=allow  protocol=TCP localport=135 profile=Any
    The issue still persists.

Any ideas where to turn next?

I do not have a Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\ProductionAgents\RA\4.1.3313.0\amd64
file path on the DPm system.
Rather Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\ProtectionAgents\RA\4.1.3313.0\amd64
    Still, I ran the DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe
from that file path and the agent did not install.
Also, on the DPM server I have added the target machine name to the DPMRADmTrustedMachines
group. I also made sure that the domain service account is in the same group. Still no luck.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Agent not rechable : Not enough storage is available to complete this operation (0x8007000E)

    Hi,
We have DPM 2012 R2 installed on Windows 2012 R2 and Protecting SQL 2012 with DPM  and  recovery point created twice per day.
And getting frequently warning and error mails “DPM Agent not Reachable” and  "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation (0x8007000E)" in DPM Console.
I know its SQL server and it occupies most of the RAM and CPU, but can I set its frequencly or time interval of DPM Agent perodic check to avoid this mails.

    Hi,
Did you try limiting the sql memory to 60% of physical memory ?
Also adjust the paging file to be physical ram * 1.5 + if necessary.

  • DPM 2012 R2 backup of Workgroup computer error

Hi, we have a Workgroup server that we had successfully backed up to a DPM 2012 Server.
Since then we have built 2 brand new DPM 2012 R2 servers.
I have uninstalled the DPM 2012 agent from the Workgroup computer and have installed the new DPM 2012 R2 agent successfully.
However, when i try to Attach the agent I am getting 'Unable to contact the protection agent on server' errors.
I have run the Set-DPMServer -IsNonDomainServer command correctly so the Firewall rules are there ( I have also turned the FW off to test but same error results). I am using the same account details created via Set-DPMserver to attach the agent on the DPM
    server.
The Event Logs on the DPM 2012 R2 server show DCOM errors (Event 10028, DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID      5e4 (C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012
    R2\DPM\DPM\bin\msdpm.exe).)
I have even uninstalled the 2012 R2 agent and re-installed the 2012 agent and that attaches fine, no problem.
    Can anyone help/advise?
    David

    Hi,
That is correct, ISCSI / Vfc attached or Pass-through disks are not included in host level backups. You have install a DPM agent inside the guest and protecting the volumes seperatly.

  • Surely It cannot be this hard! DPM 2012 R2 with Update rollup 2

I am close to giving up!
New to DPM but very experienced with networking/servers.
I installed DPM 2012 R2 and then installed rollup 2
I launch the DPM console, add some storage and then go to install the agent on a server - it fails
I get the standard message. When I check on the server I tried to install to I can see that the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service was installed and running and listening on port 5719 but there is no DPMRA service.
So I perform a manual installation using the correct version from Rollup 2 on the server to be protected. This goes OK and I return to the DPM server to add the protected server. Made sure services were running on both servers, checkerd RPC, WMI, DCOM settings
and all seems OK but when I try to add the protected server from the DPM console using the attach agent option it fails with error 370.
Followed the top 20 suggestions, configured firewall for all ports on both servers. Tried turning the firewall off and still will not install.
I have also tried using a Hyper-V server, a physical server and none will work which tends to point to an issue with the DPM server.
The thing that puzzles me is that after I perform a manual agent installation on the protected server this seems to knock out the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service which is no longer listed under services wheras DPMRA is running. I expected both services
    to be installed and running.
When I perform a NETSTAT -a after installing the remote agent I can see port 5718 is listening but not port 5719
If I go back a step and try a dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator install via DPM console (as part of adding the protected server) it does install dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator and it listens on port 5719 but the DPMRA agent software is not installed.
I have tried deinstalling both the DPM agent software on the protected server and have even reinstalled DPM 2012 R2 with Rollup 2 with no change
I have verified communications between the servers. Checked the DPM server is in the relevant groups. Am at a complete loss on what to do next - it should not be this hard.
Can someone confirm to me that they expect both the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service running on 5719 and the DPMRA service to be running on 5718 on the protected server which is what I assume but this
    is not happening!
DPM server is a physical box running Server 2012. Protected server is a Physical box running Server 2012 R2. I have also tried with a physical server 2008R2 with the same results. I am not running Server 2003
    prd

After 3 long days trying everything I could think of and following all of the excellent guidance out there ( thanks guys) I have a workaround.
The answer was to make the dpm server computer account a member of the domain admins group.
After I restarted the DPM server I saw that although the protected server account was still in error - the error message changed from 270 to 316.
So I then add the protected server computer account to the domain admins group
After I restarted the computers I could see the magic OK in the status of the DPM console.
As an experiment I removed the protected servers computer account from domain admins and restarted the server. After the restart DPM could no longer communicate with error 316 again.
So I tried adding the DPM server computer account to the protected servers local administrators group but this did not work.
Deeply unhappy with making a computer account a member of domain admin group but it works.
The question is why? There is obviously a security permissions issue that does not affect domain admins.
I am running this on freshly built servers on a simple, single domain.
Microsoft you need to look into this.

  • DPM failing SQL backups due to error: "the SQL Server instance refused a connection to the protection agent. (ID 30172 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990F85)

I ran across this error starting on 6/4/2011 and have been unable to find the root of the problem.  In our environment, we have a DPM 2010 server dedicated to backing up all our SQL envrionment (about 45 SQL Servers total).  All of the SQL
environment is backing up fine except for a SQL Cluster Application.  This particular SQL Instances is part of a 6 node failover cluster with 6 SQL Instances distributed amongst them.  The other 5 SQL instances in the cluster are backing
up fine; only one instance is failing.  The DPM Alerts section shows this error when attempting to do a SQL backup of one of the databases on this SQL instance:

I have checked the cluster node this particular SQL instance is running on using Perfmon and the machine is nowhere near capacity on CPU, memory, network, or Disk I/O.  I have failed this SQL Application to another node in the cluster and
receive the same error (this other node has another clustered SQL application on it that is actively running as well as backing up fine).  The only thing that I am aware of that has changed is that we installed SP2 for SQL 2008 about 2 weeks prior
to when the failures started to occur.  However, we updated all six clustered SQL Instances at the same time and only this one is having this issue so I don't believe that caused the problem.  We are running SQL 2008 SP2 (version 10.0.4000.0)
on all clustered instances along with DPM 2010 (version 3.0.7696.0) on this particular DPM server that has the issue.
One last thing, I have also noticed errors in the event log pertaining to the same SQL backups that are failing (but the time stamps are not concurrent with each backup attempt):

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Don't know if this helps or not, but I also noticed another peculiar issue that is derived from this problem.  If I go to "Modify protection group", then expand the cluster, then expand all six nodes in the cluster, five of them show "All SQL Servers"
and allow me to expand the SQL Instance and show all databases; the one that is having a problem backing up, when I expand the node, doesn't even show that SQL exists on the node, when in fact, it does.
I would also like to add that the databases on this node that will not backup are running fine.  They run hundreds of transactions daily so we know SQL itself is OK.  Even though it is a busy SQL Server, there is plenty of available resources as
the SQL buffer and memory counters show the node is not under durress.

  • Protection Agent failure error during backup to tape with DPM 2010.

    DPM TechNet Forum,
We are experiencing an intermittent error when backing up to tape using DPM 2010 (with latest QFE roll-up applied).
"The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The device is not connected (0x8007048F))"
Any idea what could be causing this error?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

    Hi,
You can try to reproduce the problem outside of DPM using some external utilities.  If you have more than one drive in the library, run the test against both drives simultaneously to simulate multiple backup jobs running.  If you get an error
before the tape fills you can use net helpmsg errorcode to see what the error was.
Download the DPMerasetape.zip file from the following link and extract to c:\temp folder.

The utilities are not that user friendly, but here are the basics.
Always Stop DPMLA Service prior to running MCT.EXE Commands.

Once you move a tape into a drive, use mytape commands Loadtape, taperewind, locktape, Disable hardware compression, Set block size to 65536 (64K), writeforspanning.
You need the symbolic name for the tape drive you loaded media into - look in the DPM console by clicking the tape drive and look at the details for

  • Connection dropped between DPM and Agent during consistency check, following DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2

Recently I have updated a DPM 2012 SP1 standalone server to DPM 2012 R2. That it’s self was a challenge... Following the upgrade most of the protection groups required consistency checks. For some time I have been having problems performing these consistency
checks on remote servers over a 10Meg link.
On the DPM server I would kick off a ping to the remote host, then start a consistency check. Within a few seconds I would start to get dropped pings, and very large ping response times, 3000ms plus. Within 3 minutes the pings would time out completely and
no connections can be made to the remote server, RDP etc. However any other server on the network can connect to the remote client. Eventually the DPM jobs times out and sometime later the pings also return.
The resolution to this has taken some digging but this is what I have found. The DPM agent update does not seem to fully work and requires a reinstall. Here is my process:
    Logon to remote client server
Install .net 4 (a raw install of the client requires this, may not be needed when done via DPM)
Via Add Remove Programs, remove DPM agent
    Clean up Reg
    Delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager"
Delete "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DPM**" (However this key is not there for me)
    Back onto DPM Server
Modified protection groups as required to remove all instances of the client server
    Remove Agent for client server
Install agent via DPM (watch for the glitch right at the end where it does a failed, then succeed…)
    REBOOT client server
    Add back into protection group
    Consistency check kicked off automatically
This seems to have fixed the issue.

    Hi,
The prerequisite required for DPM 2012 SP1 that must be installed is a re-rerelease of UR3 which is 4.1.3317.0 - please download and install the update specified.
